Clara Craig Geneva
Clara Craig Geneva died July 1,
2008 at the Pleasanton Nursing Home.
She was 96.
She was born Oct. 8, 1911, in San
Anselmo, CA. She is survived by two
sons, Clark Maddox of Battle Creek,
Michigan and Earl Maddox of Pleasanton,
CA, eight grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren and one greatgreat-
grandchild. She lived in Pleasanton
for 35 years.
She was a bookkeeper. Her last job
was at Pleasanton Shell Service where
she worked until she was 85 years old.
Graveside Services were held
Wednesday, July 9 at Alta Mesa Memorial
Cemetery in Palo Alto.

Marnette Copeland Cater
Marnette Copeland Cater died June
30, 2008. She was 78.
She had lived in Pleasanton for 50
years. She married the late Rev. Bill
Cater on June 23, 1948. They were
married for 58 years. Marnette graduated
from Pine Bluff High School in
1948. She was one of the founders of
the First Baptist Church of Pleasanton.
She was a Christian and lifelong
student of the Bible.
Marnette was a parent and homemaker.
She worked at Daughtry’s
Department Store on Main Street in
the 1960s and later for McDonald’s in
Dublin and Livermore in the 1980s
and 1990s. She also partnered with her
husband in owning and operating Pleasanton
Painting and Decorating. She
joined her husband in visiting people
in nursing homes in the Tri-Valley.
She delighted in her children and
grandchildren and was active in their
school events and activities.
She is survived by a son Terry
Cater and wife Pam Hudson of Pleasanton,
daughter Sherry Cater Castro
and husband Michael of San Jose,
daughter Nancy Giordanengo and
husband Guy of Windsor, seven
grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. on Sat., July 12 at the First Baptist
Church, 4100 First St., Pleasanton.
Donations may be made in
Marnette’s memory to Hope Hospice,
6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 100, Dublin,
CA 94568.

Anne Carlisle Meadows
Anne Carlisle Meadows died suddenly
on July 1, 2008. She was born
in San Francisco on January 30, 1962.
Anne loved all animals as well as
the outdoors. She took pride in her
gardens and ranch.
She is survived by her husband
Jerry D. Meadows Jr., son Paul
LaClaire and daughter Rachel LaClaire,
brothers and sisters-in-law David and
Alicia Adams and Eric and Daisy
O’Brien; her mother-in-law Carla
Meadows, aunts and uncles Jim and
Marguerite Doyle and Martha O’Brien
and many loving cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents Bill and Margie Carlisle.
A funeral liturgy was held July 7 at
St. Raymond’s Church in Dublin.
Donations may be made in memory
of Anne to the Hope of the Valley
therapeutic horseback riding charity,
www.hopeinthevalley.org.

Madeline S. Hoig
Pleasanton resident Madeline S.
Hoig died July 2008. She was born in
1926.
She volunteered in the community
for many years and was recognized for
her work. She was a kind, giving and
gracious lady who will be dearly
missed. She was a dedicated friend to
Verla Becker of twenty years.
She is survived by daughters Toni
and Teresa Ann and grandsons Daniel,
Tyler, Christopher and Kent. She was
preceded in death by her husband of 38
years, Williard Hoig.
Services were held July 9 at St.
Augustine Catholic Church in Pleasanton.

Vela Mae Steele
Vela Mae Steele was called home
to be with the Lord on July , 2008. She
was born May 17, 1924.
She is preceded in death by her
parents, son Roger, sister Vivian Wert,
and brother-in-laws Elwood Pace,
Jerry Butler, and Glenn Helvie. She is
survived her husband of 61 years
Nathan H. Steele, daughter; Deanna
(Jerry) Haynie, grandchildren; Roger
(Samia) Haynie, Rodney Haynie, Jessica
(Daniel) Rippee, friendly cab driver
Tom Donayre, siblings Mildred Monday
of Indiana, Grace Pace of Utah,
Kathleen Butler-Helvie of Indiana,
and brother-in-law Claude Wert of
Indiana. She also leaves many nieces,
nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held July 9
in Livermore. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations to Joyce Meyer Ministries
Inc. P.O. Box 655, Fenton,
MO, 63026.

Bertha “Bubbles” Pitzen
Bertha Pitzen, 88, native of Dillon,
Montana, passed away silently and
peacefully with her daughter by her
side on July 3, 2008. She resided with
her family in Dublin for the past 15
years.
She was born May 25, 1920.
Bubbles was a longtime member
of St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in
Dublin. She was a former resident of
Tacoma for many years, retiring from
Pacific Northwest Bell. Bubbles had
a zest for life and touched many people.
She leaves behind many heart felt
memories.
She is survived by her son, Larry
Pitzen of Dublin, and daughter, Linda
Back (Ken Jr.) of Dublin. Bertha was
preceded in death by her husband,
Henry who died in Pleasanton on May
18, 2003, brother, Donald Julson and
sisters, Marge Phillips and Loretta
Julson.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thurs.,
July 10 at Graham-Hitch Mortuary,
4167 First St., Pleasanton. Mass will
be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, July
11, at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church,
11555 Shannon Ave., Dublin. Burial
to follow at Queen of Heaven in
Lafayette.

Linda Mae Garcia
Linda Mae Garcia died July 5,
2008 at the age of 49. She was a
Pleasanton resident.
Linda was born August 10, 1959.
She was always considered the family
counselor and always had a shoulder
for anyone to cry on.
She is survived by her mother
Virginia Ferrill of Pleasanton, siblings
Daniel Ferrill of Pleasanton,
Debra (Gary) Cruse of Idaho, Janet
Penny of  Texas, and Jerry (Lorraine)
Ferrill of Idaho. She is also survived
by seven nieces, five nephews, four
great nieces, and five great nephews.
Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Thurs.,
July 10 with a funeral service to follow
at 4 p.m. at Callaghan’s Chapel, 3833
East Ave., Pleasanton.

Gerald “Jerry” MacLeod
Jerry MacLeod lost his battle
against complications from diabetes
on July 4, 2008. He was 72.
Born in Oakland, CA on April 28,
1936, he was the son of Stanton and
Birdie MacLeod. He lived in Livermore
most of his life. He followed in
his father’s footsteps, working as a
diesel mechanic for Haslett Trucking
until he retired in 1990. Jerry could not
resist working on cars, helping friends
and family whenever they asked.
During the past 20 years, Jerry loved
bowling three times a week. He especially
enjoyed the Wednesday “Senior
Pot Bowling.”
Jerry is survived by his wife of 30
years, Dolores, sons Gary and Don,
stepsons Steve and Mike Riddle, sister
Barbara Jennings and grandchildren
Cody, Miki, Colleen, Lindsay
and Eric. He was preceded in death by
his brother Jack and a son, Dan.
At his request, no services will be
held. Arrangements by Callaghan
Mortuary.
