Talmage Keeton
Talmage Keeton was called home
to be with the Lord on July 6, 2008. He
lived in Livermore for the past 5 years
and previously in Sacramento, CA for
34 years. He was born Feb. 4, 1927.
Talmage joined the Merchant Marines
in 1944 where he served on the
James B. Eads Liberty Ship. He was
also in the US Army from 1945-1948
in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a
welder by profession and retired from
Contech Construction as a Plant Manager.
Talmage loved spending time
with his family. He also enjoyed being
with his many friends from the Polish
American Social Club of Greater Sacramento,
and playing bingo at the
LARPD Senior Center.
Talmage will be missed by his wife
Anna; daughters Joan and Rose; sonin-
law Terry; grandchildren Chris,
Philip, Jacob, Damon and Janel; greatgrandchildren
Isabella, Isaac, Ryan,
Tyler and Holly. He is preceded in
death by his parents, 4 brothers and 1
sister.
A service celebrating his life will
be held on Monday, July 14 at 11:00
am at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 8720
Florin Rd. in Sacramento. Grave-side
services will follow at St. Mary’s
Catholic Cemetery, 6700 21st Street in
Sacramento.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association, 225 North Michigan
Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Veronica Margaret Genova
Roni Genova of Pleasanton
went home to be with the Lord
on August 31, 2009. She was
born in 1947.
She grew up in NewYork City,
where she cut her teeth as a young
woman in the garment center. She
later attended Hofstra University.
She spent more than 25 years as
an award-winning sales representative
for New York Life and
later for Prudential Insurance
Company, earning a Bachelor’s
degree and several credentials
including a CLU, ChFc. She was
the mother of Charles Genova,
Annette Volking and her husband,
Steve; grandmother of
Alexis Genevieve and Dylan. In
1978, she was pre-deceased by
her husband, Charles.
Her exuberant laugh, loving
spirit and complete zest for life
will truly be missed by all who
knew and loved her. Friends were
invited to a memorial service
on Saturday, September 5 in
Pleasanton.

Gregory S. Buck
Greg Buck, age 59, passed
away on September 4, 2009. He
was born on September 19, 1949
in Oakland, California.
He served in the U.S. Army,
the Army Security Agency, from
1969-1972. He also worked at
Emphasys Computer Solutions
for 15 years. He was a loving
husband, father, and grandfather.
Gregory leaves behind his
wife of 40 years, Susan, his
daughter Stacey Carroll (Donny),
son Chris (Daphney), brother,
Rodney, and 3 beautiful granddaughters,
Tori, Faith, and Aubrie.
A celebration of Greg's life
will be held at Graham-Hitch
Mortuary, 4167 First Street,
Pleasanton, on Thursday, September
10 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial

Alvina Abounader
Alvina Joann Shaffer Abounder
died August 28, 2009 in Livermore.
She was 53.
She was born April 4, 1956 in
Ottumwa, Iowa and was raised in
Livermore. Joann loved music.
She especially loved the guitar,
which she played whenever she
had the chance. She loved to
play along with others, but only
in private settings. Joann was
very creative and loved to sew,
making a lot of her own clothes.
She knew how to work on race
car bodies, specializing in working
with fiberglass. She spent
summers in Indianapolis working
on Paul Newman's car. She
was very proud of her home in
Livermore. It was both the home
where she was raised and then
was transformed over 20 years
by her husband. Most of all, her
two sons gave her the most joy.
She endlessly documented their
lives through photography.
She is survived by her husband
of 23 years, Raymond
Abounader; sons Michael Shaffer
of Dayton, NY and Sean Abounader
of Livermore; daughter-inlaw
Melonie Shaffer of Dayton,
NY; brothers Duane Shaffer of
Livermore and Edward Shaffer
of Grants Pass, OR., and parents
Betty Shaffer of Bloomfield, IA
and Robert Shaffer of Grants
Pass, OR.
A memorial service was held
at Cornerstone Fellowship in
Livermore on Sept. 8. In lieu of
donations, hug a loved one.

Joseph A McCarthy Sr.
Joseph A McCarthy Sr., born
10/30/1917, in Oakland, Ca, died
9/1/2009 at his residence in Castro
Valley, Ca., at 91 years of age.
He had been ill for some time.
He was a resident of Livermore
from 1967 to 2005 before
moving to Castro Valley.
He was to devoted husband of
the late Angela McCarthy for 37
years and before that was married
to Marian Hyllis Mahood of
Santa Cruz for 20 years.
Mr. McCarthy graduated from
St. Mary’s College High School,
Berkeley, in 1935 and then St.
Mary’s College, Moraga, in
1939. He then attended University
of California where he
received his teaching degree.
He retired from the Lawrence
Livermore Lab after nearly 20
years where he worked as a procurement
specialist.
He was a member of St. Michael’s
Parish where he served
as a lector, eucharistic minister,
a member of Golden Friends,
and a director in Interfaith Housing,
Inc. He was a member of
Transfiguration Church in Castro
since 2005.
Mr. McCarthy is survived by
his beloved son and daughtersin-
law, Joseph Jr. and Donna of
American Canyon, and Karen
McCarthy of Castro Valley. He
also leaves behind 4 adored
grandchildren and five great
grandchildren, along with many
nieces, nephews and cousins. He
was preceded in death by his son,
Keven McCarthy, in 2008.
Services will be held at St.
Michael’s Church, 458 Maple
St.,, Livermore Monday , Sept.
14, at 11:00 am. Memorials may
be sent to the American Cancer
Society or a charity of choice.
