Robert C. Muir
Robert C. Muir, 78, died Saturday, October 8, 1998, at his home in Quincy. A native of Colorado Springs, Colo., Robert was born May 28, 1920. He moved to Quincy seven years ago, coming from Van Nuys. He was a tool design engineer in the aircraft industry for over 35 years and was last employed with Weber aircraft. He was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a former member of the Valley Symphony Orchestra where he played the oboe and English Horn, he was a great lover of music and also wrote poetry. In their younger years, he and his wife Mary enjoyed backpacking in the high Sierras. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Quincy; sons Malcom and Norman, both of Quincy; and daughter Meridy Muir of Quincy. Services following cremation at Fehrman Crematory, Quincy memorial services will be held at a later date.
Lucy Maddalena Vernazza
Lucy Maddalena Vernazza, 87, died in Sacramento. Mrs. Vernazza was born in Beckworth on the Maddalena Ranch on Jaunary 28, 1911. She lived in Graeagle most of her life. She was employed for 20 or more years for the Plumas Unified School District in food preparation. She was preceded in death by husband "B.G." Vernazza, daughter Lorraine Stewart, and brother Mack Pirazza. She is survived by daughters Barbara Hunziker, and Lillian Stevens. Also survived by five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Friends and family are welcome to attend graveside services Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at Mohawk Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Jason Derek Cork
Jason Derek Cork, 18, of Sparks, Nev., died Oct. 3, 1998, in Reno. A native of Riverside, he was born Sept. 11, 1980, and had lived in Reno for the past five years, coming from Orange. Cork was a student at Feather River College, Quincy. He was a 1998 graduate of Proctor R. Hug High School in Reno and played varsity baseball for the past three years. He is survived by his parents, Joe and Debbie Marie Aguirre Cork of Reno; brother, Joey and several aunts and uncles. Visitation is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7p.m., Oct. 7, at Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary, Reno. Funeral services will be held Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. at Sparks Christian Fellowship. Cremation will be under the direction of Masonic Memorial Gardens.
Twila Worth
Twila Worth died Wednesday, September 30, at Seneca District Hospital Long Term at age 95. She was born Sept. 4, 1903 in Broken Bow, Nebraska. In July 1923 she married Fred Worth. They moved to Westwood in 1963. After Fred's death in 1961, Twila became active with Westwood Senior Citizens. She later joined the staff of the R.S.V.P. Program and for several years was responsible for recruiting and coordinating volunteers in Lassen and Plumas counties. She received many awards and certificates of recognition during her tenure. More valuable than the awards was the vast number of friendships she developed through the years. In 1992 Twila moved from Westwood to the Wildwood Senior Complex in Chester where she continued to volunteer with the Mountain Care Givers Day Care Respite Program. In 1997 she moved into the Long Term Facility at Seneca District Hospital where she died on Sept. 30, 1998. Twila will be remembered as an avid cribbage player. In 1994 she appeared on the cover of the Sierra Cascade Girl Scout Calendar. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Young of Westwood and Lois Pickett of Castro Valley; five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Welch "Mac" McKenzie
Welch "Mac" McKenzie, 82, died September 27, 1998, at his residence in Reno, Nev. A native of Ferron, Utah, he was born July 23, 1916. He lived in Yuma, Ariz. before moving go Quincy in 1979, and then Reno in May of this year. Mac was a steelworker for Geneva Steel Company in Orem, Utah for 30 years. He retired 22 years ago. He was a winemaker in Quincy, a Presbyterian, and had been in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice in 1990; and his daughter Wanda Kapperman in 1989. He is survived by daughters, Janice Meyer and Linda McAlister, both of Yuma, Ariz., Sandra Burgess, Judy Cunningham, and Geri Sandstrom, all of Reno, Nev.; and 10 grandchildren. Private memorial services will be held. Memorials have been established with Hospice of Northern Nevada, c/o Saint Mary's Foundation, 235 W. sixth St., Reno, Nev., 89520.
MARILYN MARIE CORY
Marilyn Marie Cory, 70, died at her son's residence on Monday, Sept. 28, 1998. She was born on Nov. 12, 1927 in Orange, Mass. She lived to Shasta County since 1991 moving from Susanville. She was a homemaker and loved to play bingo. Survivors include husband, Russell Cory of Anderson, Calif.; three sons, Randy Savage of Anderson, Darryl Savage of Shasta Lake, Calif., and James Savage of Warren, Mich.; two brothers Neil Cote of Susanville, Calif. and Ron Cote of Athol, Mass.; one sister, Carol Colon of Athol, Mass.; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 at McDonald's Chapel in Redding, Calif. Burial followed at the Redding Cemetery.
DALE BEN KNIGHT
Dale Ben Knight, 51, died at his residence in Doyle, Calif. on Sept. 24, 1998. He was born in Herlong, Calif. on Dec. 16, 1946 and had been a Lassen County resident for 39 years. He was been a maintenance person at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong for 33 years. He had also worked for California Department of Forestry fighting fires and was a volunteer with the Lassen County Sheriff Possee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed acting as manager for his son in motorcross and loved fishing and hunting. He will be remembered as a loving husband, son and father. Survivors include his wife, Carol Knight of Doyle, Calif.; one son, Matt Bussel of Doyle; three daughters, Dina Rimack of Sacramento, Calif., Nicole Kight of Chico, Calif., Brandy Tong of Herlong, Calif.; mother, Veda Knight of Doyle; one brother, Randy Knight of Roosevelt, Utah; and four grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Doyle Cemetery
in Doyle. Service times are pending.
CHARLES DAVID TONG
Charles David Tong, 50, died near Truckee, Calif. on Monday, Sept. 28, 1998. He was born in Clarksville, Ark. on March 20, 1948 and was a Lassen County resident for 13 years. He was employed at Sierra Army Depot as an explosives worker for five years before going to work for Sierra Pacific Industries as a truck driver for the past four months. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with the bands Arkansas Express and Tennessee Whiskey. Survivors include his wife, Norma Tong of Herlong, Calif.; four sons, Michael Tong of San Marquez, Texas, Charles Tong of Herlong, Noah Tong of Doyle, Calif., and Jason Tong of Herlong; three daughters, Paula Eakins, Mistie Lea and Kristie Lea Tong, all of Herlong; two sisters, Helen Gibson and Joann Griffith of Clarksville, Ark.; one brother, Jimmy Tong of Clarksville, Ark., and 11 grandchildren. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998 at the Senior Citizens Building in Doyle, Calif.
Ruben "Rick" Shaw died of lung cancer March 19, 2001, in Loomis. He was born in Quincy. Rick was considered one of the best tradesmen in the lumber business. He loved to help anyone in need. All who knew him will sadly miss him. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Linda Shaw; children, Christian, Susanne, Shannon and Jennifer; brother, Frank Shaw; and four grandchildren. Friends and family gathered at the home of Michael and Lorna Strautman to share their memories of a man who touched their lives to deeply.
Dorothy Darrow Fritts, 84, died March 25, 2001, at Eisenhower Memorial Hospital in Rancho Mirage. She was born May 12, 1916, in Los Angeles, to Stanley Darrow and Clarrisa Louise Malson. She had been a resident of Lake Almanor for the past 20 years, spending her winters in Rancho Mirage. In 1948, she married Paul G. Fritts in Las Vegas, Nev. She worked as a teacher for the San Ramon Unified School District for 20 years. Dorothy was a member of the P.E.O. and a member of the Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband, Paul Fritts, of Rancho Mirage and Lake Almanor; sons, Dennis D. Fritts of Brentwood, and Gary A. Fritts of Rescue; daughters, Dianne A. Carbine of Concord, and Deborah A. Boe of Silverdale, Wash.; sister, Margaret Engle King of New Mexico; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Visitations were held Thursday, March 29, at the Fitzhenry Funeral Home Palm Desert Chapel. Graveside services were held Friday, March 30, at Santa Barbara Cemetery, 901 Channel Dr., Santa Barbara.
William "Bill" Alfred Cofer, 82, died April 1, 2001, at his residence in Chester. He was born Sept. 11, 1918, in Yerrington, Nev., and had been a resident of Chester for 50 years, moving there from Medford, Ore. Bill had worked as a bartender for over 40 years and had been last employed by the former Onslow Casino in Reno, Nev. He had worked for numerous restaurants and lounges throughout the Almanor Basin, along with being employed at Collins Pine Co. in their co-generation plant for 11 years. He had been a longtime member and former business agent for the Bartenders and Culinary Workers Local 654 of Oroville. He enjoyed woodworking and will be remembered in the community for his distinct ability to strike up a conversation on any topic. Bill is survived by his wife of 30 years, Gerry, of Chester; son, William Cofer, Jr. of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Vickie Jo Bartlett of Reno, Nev.; stepchildren, Tommy Andrews of Avon Park, Fla., and Karen Adkinson of Denver, Colo.; brothers, James L. Cofer of Lower Lake, Berdette Cofer of Modesto and Dean Cofer of Orland; sisters, Patricia "Pat" Martin of Chester and Zella Osborne of Red Bluff; half-sister, Carol Jean Hinkle; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life was held at the gravesite in the Chester District Cemetery

Amelia Aimee Washoe, 75, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Long Term Care Unit of Indian Valley Health Care District in Greenville. She was born Nov. 26, 1925, in Bishop. She moved to Indian Valley in 1948. Amelia, along with her husband, were longtime attendee's of the Indian Mission Full Gospel Pentecostal Church of Greenville. Amelia enjoyed working around her house, especially tending to her garden. She liked to crochet, read, travel and dine out. She enjoyed all types of sports and could often be found watching her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren compete in youth activities. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Alvin Cane and Archie Shaw. Amelia is survived by her husband of 58 years, James, of Greenville; children, Clyde of Greenville and Claudia A. Salgado of Soboba Indian Reservation in San Jacinto; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Visitations were held Monday, April 9, at the Indian Mission Full Gospel Pentecostal Church. A celebration of her life followed at the church starting at 11 a.m. with interment following in the Greenville Cemetery.
Janice Elaine Woods, 50, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at her residence in Quincy. She was born Dec. 15, 1950, in Chicago, Ill., and had been a resident of Quincy for the past 23 years, moving there from Mt. Shasta City, where she had resided for eight years. Janice had been employed as an LVN at Plumas District Hospital for over 15 years and was a graduate of Feather River College's nursing program. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing alongside her husband and family. She was an accomplished seamstress. A great enjoyment in her life was spending time with her grandchildren. Janice is survived by her husband of 25 years, Dennis, of Quincy; daughters, Dana Gibson of Buckeye, Ariz., and Stacy Melhus of Janesville; step-son, Paul Woods of Redding; sisters, Wanda Russell of Havasue, Ariz., and Mickey Plank of Mt. Shasta; step-brother, Fred Babcock of Mt. Shasta; and nine grandchildren. Visitations were held Tuesday, April 10, at Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Quincy. A celebration of her life will take place at graveside in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery

Bertha Amelia Billups, 90, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Lassen Community Hospital Annex. She was born in Los, Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 21, 1910, and grew up on the family dairy farm in Lennox, Calif. She had been a resident of Lassen County for the past five years, residing with her daughter and son-in-law, Ward and Marilyn Stewart of Susanville. She moved here from La Canada Flintridge, Calif., where she had resided for 25 years. She had been in the food service industry working at Knotts Berry Farm, Glendale College and convalescent hospitals. She was a graduate of Inglewood High School and Los Angeles Business College. She was 51-year member of Eastern Star. She was an avid bowler and bowled until she was 88. She also loved her VW bug, driving until 89. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert R. Billups in 1957 and brother, William Stiglmeier in 1979. Survivors include brothers Herman Stiglmeier of Kaloa, Kauai; Henry Stiglmeier, of Garden Valley, Calif., and sister, Martha Cline, of Santa Barbara, Calif. Surviving children are Joanne Mintz, of Montrose, Calif.; James Billups, of Paradise, Calif.; Phyllis Williams, of Chester, Calif.; Marilyn Stewart, of Susanville, Calfi., and Delbert Billups ,of Tulare, Calif. Other survivors include 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held at Crippen Mortuary in Montrose, Calif., on Friday, March 23, with a celebration of her life and graveside services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, at the family area at Inglewood Park Cemetery
in Inglewood, Calif.
John William Ross, 83, died at his residence in Janesville on March 28, 2001. He was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Johnstonville, Calif., and has been a lifetime resident of Lassen County. He was a heavy fire equipment operator with the California Department of Forestry for 14 years. He was one of the founders of the FFA Junior Rodeo, enjoyed hunting and was a one-time member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice Ross and baby daughter, Malinda Lou Ross. Survivors include his wife, Theresa Ross, of Janesville, Calif.; one son, James Ross, of Red Bluff, Calif.; two daughters, Patricia Arnswald, of Auburn, Calif.; Peggy Fowler of Susanville, Calif.; one sister, Betty Wynant, of Redding, Calif.; and four grandchildren, John Aaron Ross, of Red Bluff, Calif.; Kristin Bernice Ross, of Stephenville, Texas; Nicole Carman, of Susanville and Breana Gordon, of Las Vegas, Nev. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 2, at the Janesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your charity of choice.
