Mary Ellen Hard, 88, died March 20, 2001, at Twin Oaks in Chico. She was born March 17, 1913, in Chico, to Eva (Miller) Gillespie and Alexander Gillespie. Her family moved to Grays Flat when she was 3 years old. In 1920, the Gillespie family moved to Fallon, and her father worked for the state of Nevada for four years. The family moved back to Grays Flat in 1924, where Mary Ellen went to school from the fifth to the eighth grade in the one-room schoolhouse at Twain. Analena Gansner Payne was the teacher for first through eighth grade. She attended high school in Chico for two years. The family moved back to Quincy in 1929, and she attended Plumas County High School, graduating in 1931. In 1934, she married Chester Hard, who worked for Forest Service Timber Sales. They spent two years in Clover Valley and two years at Squaw Queen. They spent weekends in Portola shopping and enjoying a little entertainment. Mary Ellen and Chester had three children, Karen, born in 1935; Leone, born in 1938; and Dorothy, born in 1944. In 1943, Chester became County Assessor. Mary Ellen also worked in the assessor's office on the Plumas County Assessment Rolls for nine years. In 1978, Mary Ellen retired from Bank of America, Quincy Branch. She began working in the mail room at Feather Publishing in October 1980 and retired as mailroom supervisor in 1990. Mary Ellen was a member of the American Legion, the AARP, Community United Methodist Church of Quincy, Eastern Star, the Plumas County Historical Society, the Plumas County Museum, VFW Auxiliary and the  White Shrine. She volunteered at: the Nutrition Center two days a week; Ombudsman for Long Term Care; the Plumas County Commission on Aging, Plumas County Fairgrounds (domestic arts, Mineral Building, 4-H exhibit, Peppard Cabin and Pioneer School House); as a Plumas County Museum Docent; a Senior tax preparer, and a tax collector. Mary Ellen did all types of handiwork and was a master at crocheting. She also enjoyed bowling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester, in 1978; and daughter, Karen, in 1992. Mary Ellen is survived by her daughters, Leone and Dorothy; and brother William; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held March 31, at 11 a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church in Quincy. Private burial will be held at Meadow Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Plumas County Museum in Quincy, or Enloe Hospital Hospice in Chico.

Arthur "Andy" Ellsworth Anderson, 80, died March 16, 2001, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. He was born March 1, 1921, in Casselton, N.D., to Arthur Martin and Elsie Mae Barnes Anderson. He had lived in Portola for the past 28 years, moving there from San Rafael. Arthur served in the U.S. Army for 25 years. He proudly served his country in World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict, retiring in 1967 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW3). He graduated from high school in Brancroft, Neb., and attended Feather River College in Quincy. Andy was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 3758 in Portola and American Legion Post No. 329 of Portola. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen Anderson; four brothers; and one sister. Andy is survived by his wife, Mary Anderson, of Portola; sons, Terry of San Rafael, Michael of Milpitas, and Joseph of Reno, Nev.; daughters, Sharyn Bradley of Smartsville, and Judy Anderson of Penn Valley; brother, Cliff Andeson of Portola; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Inurnment took place March 21, at Shady Grove Cemetery in Portola, followed by a reception at the Veterans Memorial Hall. Donations in his memory may be made to Eastern Plumas Home Health Care, 500 First Ave., Portola, CA 96122.

Florence Irene Langley Ward, 99, died March 17, 2001, at SunBridge Care of Carmichael. She was born Aug. 21, 1901, in Osborne, Kan., to Hosea and Anna Maria Sharp Langley. She had been a resident of Quincy since 1960, moving there from Hesperia, where she had been a longtime resident. Florence worked as a homemaker. She was a member of the Hesperia Congregation Church. Florence was preceded in death by her husband in 1980; and daughter, Rita Nelson, in 1993. She is survived by her son, Morton Ward of Quincy; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Private inurnment in Montecito Memorial Park in San Bernardino is planned.

Verla Jane Connelly, 73, died March 14, 2001, in Loxahatchee, Fla. She was born May 7, 1927, in Pigeon Creek, Ala., to Frank and Della Kelsoe. She had been a resident of Quincy from 1947 through 1963. Verla worked as a homemaker. She enjoyed going to yard sales.
Verla was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Connelly, Sept. 7, 1987. She is survived by her son, David Paul Connelly of Willows; daughters, Janet Begrin of Douglas, Wyo., and Debbie Evans of Willows; sisters, Ezuber Buss of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Ruby Deline of Lake Placid, Fla., Jeannie Davis of Wetumpka, Ala., Virginia Walker of South Bay, Fla., Lucy Cameron of Clewiston, Fla., Dorinda Lambdin of Okeechobee, Fla., and Angela Kelsoe of Miami, Fla.; brothers, Lewis Kelsoe and Lee Kelsoe, both of Clewiston, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held March 23 at Willows First Baptist Church. Burial took place in Willows Cemetery Friday.

Julie Ann Womack, 44, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, following her battle with Leukemia. She was born Dec. 24, 1956, in Oakland. She moved to the Chester/Lake Almanor area in 1979 from Livermore, where she had been raised, attending and graduating from Granada High School. She went on to attend Chabot College and later Lassen Community College. Julie was a successful Lake Almanor Basin entrepreneur who, along with her husband, owned and operated the Knotty Pine Resort, Womack Construction, Almanor Dry Dock and Almanor Dock Supply. She was a member of the Lake Almanor Community Church. She enjoyed the outdoors through snow skiing and bicycling. Julie liked to travel and was an accomplished cook. Julie is survived by her husband of 15 years, Brett, of the Lake Almanor Peninsula; daughters, Jessica Bentley currently attending college in Santa Clarita, and Jeanene Bentley of Culver City; parents, Margaret and David Monetti of Livermore; sisters, Janis Dossey and Jackie Rankl, both of Livermore, and Jill Baertlein of Lake Almanor; step-brother, Tony Monetti of Boise, Idaho; and step-sister, Adrian Monetti of Boise, Idaho. A celebration of her life was held at the Lake Almanor Community Church in Lake Almanor March 24. Interment took place in Chester District Cemetery. The family requests any donations in her memory be made to the Leukemia Society of America, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 803, Greenville, CA 95947.

Francis Joseph Moore, 78, died March 17, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center, Las Cruses, N.M., from natural causes. He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Bloomfield, N.J., and had been a resident of Plumas County from 1974 to 1993, after which he moved to New Mexico. Francis was a World War II veteran for the U.S. Army Air Force, where he was an aircraft mechanic crew chief stationed in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He met his wife, Ruth Shaw, there, who preceded him in death in 1978, While in Plumas County, he owned the Canyondam Store and Trailer Park from 1974 to 1977, then later went to work for the U.S. Forest Service for 15 years, stationed at the Almanor Ranger Station. Francis also owned the Plumas Theatre in Greenville from 1978 to 1992. He is survived by his son, Richard; daughters, Kathleen Moore of Chico, Susan Lundergreen of Westwood, and Stephanie Heyer of Lake Forest; sisters, Harriet Fletemeyer, Mary Gammaro and Barbara Sauerheber, all of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A private family memorial will be held this spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a local VFW or American Legion.

Valentine L. "Andy" Anderson, 90, died Thursday, March 22, at the Lassen Community Hospital Annex. She was born in Dubois, Idaho, on Feb. 14, 1910, and had been a resident of Lassen County for 64 years. Anderson was a licensed vocational nurse at Lassen Community Hospital for 20 years. She retired in 1971. She was a member of the Senior Citizen's Club, Senior Nutrition Program, Bingo Club, Campers Club, and was a caring nurse and friend to many people. Survivors include two daughters; Nicky DeVose, of Susanville,  Calif. and Judith Delgado, of Oroville,  Calif.; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Lassen Cemetery in Susanville.

Lee Roy Ness, 61, died Friday, March 16 at Lassen Community Hospital. He was born in Oregon on July 6, 1939, and grew up in both Oregon and Colorado. For the past 16 years, he was a resident of Lassen County. Ness was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army, retiring in 1979. After leaving the military he enrolled at Chico State University where he received his BA degree in recreational management. He then went to work for the U.S. Forest Service (Eagle Lake Ranger District) where he was employed for nearly 10 years as a forestry technician. At Ness' request there will be no services held. Donations can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

John Marion Rigsbee, 86, died Sunday, March 18, at the Stilwell Memorial Hospital in Stilwell, Okla. He was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Crawford County, Ark., to Lilly Mae and Jona Rigsbee. He was a member of the Summers Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Rigsbee and one brother Noble Rigsbee. Survivors include two sons, Michael E. Rigsbee, of Stilwell, Okla., and Dwain E. Rigsbee, of Summers, Ark.; one stepson, Bobby J. Phillips, of Summers; three daughters, Joanne Bowman, of Klamath Falls, Ore., Mary Ann Luond, of Standish,  Calif., and Peggy Mankins, of Susanville,  Calif.; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, at the Ganderville Cemetery in Summers, Ark.

Francisco Lara "Frank" Valadez, 92, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Lassen Community Hospital. He was born in El Paso,  Texas on June 17, 1908, and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 21 years, moving here from Delleker,  Calif. Valadez had been a sawmill worker for 37 years, working at mills in Delleker, Sierraville, LongValley and Loyalton. He had been a member of the Catholic Church, as well as a member of the Western Council of Industrial Workers' Union. He spent all his time with his family. Survivors include his nephews, Albert Valadez Sr., of Susanville, Joe Valadez, of Sacramento, and Angel Valadez, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and nieces, Rosena Gutierez, of Portola, Jean Messenger, of Portola, Magdalena Rojas, of Gardenia, Yolanda Valadez, of Phoenix, and Veronica Valdez, of Phoenix. Also surviving are numerous great-nieces and nephews. Vigil services were held at the Colonial Morturary Chapel on Friday, March 23, at 6 p.m. With graveside services following at the Indian Burial Site, located near Rice Canyon, at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24. The family would appreciate any donations be made in Frank's memory to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Verne P. Crane, 86, died April 18, 2001, in a nursing home in San Bernardino,  Calif., following a lingering illness. He was born June 27, 1914, in Herkimer, N.Y., and moved to Southern California as a child. He moved to Susanville in 1953 where he resided until 1997. He worked for both Lassen County Office of Education and Susanville School District in administration. He returned to teaching and taught fifth grade at McKinley School for the last few years of his career before retiring in 1974. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite, in 1999 and son, Thomas, in 1967. He built and ran live steam model trains as a hobby for many years and belonged to the Golden Gate Live Steamers. He loved to run the engines for his grandchildren, neighborhood kids and often invited entire kindergarten classes to come learn about and ride the trains on the Sierra Short Line that circled his home on South Sacramento Street. He also enjoyed sailing and built three sailboats and belonged to the Eagle Lake Sailing Association. Survivors include a son, William, of Highland,  Calif., a son, Robert, of Gilroy,  Calif., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
