Joyce Openshaw Harding died Nov. 30, 2002 at Eastern Plumas District Hospital. Joyce was born April 15, 1921 in Burley, Idaho. She was raised in Orcutt on the Union Oil Company "Hill." In 1940, she graduated from Santa Maria High School. After marrying, she made her career as a home-maker. In 1970, she and her husband moved from El Cerrito to Graeagle, where they operated the Graeagle Store. Joyce was a charter member of the Portola Soroptomist. She enjoyed golf. She was preceded in death by her five brothers. Joyce is survived by her husband, Stephen T. Harding of Graeagle; daughter, Jane Iden of Chico; son, Stephen D. Harding of Graeagle; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside inurnment service is to be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 at 11 a.m., in Graeagle at Mohawk Cemetery.
Dorothy Ann Hunter, a longtime resident of Lassen County, died on Nov. 17, 2002. Dorothy was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio on June 5, 1934. In 1951, she moved to Southern California. In 1952, she married John L. Hunter. In 1960, they moved to Westwood, where they raised their three children. She loved to hunt, fish, camp and the outdoors. She is survived by her husband, John; brother, Eugene Battalochi; sister, Karen Pusateri; daughter, Debra Francis; sons, John and Craig; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Kathleen Cecilia Morales, 72, died at her home in Meadow Valley on Nov. 21, 2002. Kathleen was born on Oct. 26, 1930 in San Francisco to Michael and Bridget Cronin Ring, who were Irish immigrants. She had been a Plumas County resident for the past seven years, moving from Quincy to Meadow Valley two months ago. Kathleen was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in San Francisco for many years. Following her retirement as a statical clerk for Firemans Fund Insurance, she took up a second career in child day care and development. She became a certified dietitian and worked for Highsmith-Rainey Hospital and Kinder Care in Fayettville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her son, Ralph. Kathleen is survived by her children, Michael Morales of Pt. Richmond, Maureen Patricia Morales of Burlingame and Tina Morales of Meadow Valley; her brother, James Bradly of Pacifica; and two grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of her life was held on Nov. 24, 2002 in Quincy. Private scattering of her cremains will take place at sea outside the Golden Gate Bridge. Adelaide Blessing, 82, died Nov. 27, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. Adelaide was born Aug. 16, 1920 in R.I. For many years she lived in Martinez, where she held a variety of positions as a real estate agent, a clerk at Bond's clothing, a waitress and as bookkeeper at Treasure Island and for her husband's business. Adelaide moved to Meadow Valley 18 years ago. She attended Christian Life Fellowship. She and her husband moved to Reno, Nev., earlier this year. She was a Sunday School teacher at the Assembly of God Church in Martinez. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, sewing and did handicrafts. She was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Martin; sister, Mary Balagno; and one granddaughter. Adelaide is survived by her husband, Mel of Reno, Nev.; son, Wayne Fitch of Pleasant Hill; daughters, Debbie Lengele and Lila Hurley, both of Reno, Nev.; and three grandsons and six great-grandchildren. Visitation was held Dec. 3, 2002 at Manni Funeral Home in Portola. A graveside funeral service followed in Meadow Valley Cemetery
in Meadow Valley.
Ruby Edith D'Angelo, 87, died Nov. 22, 2002 at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Ruby was born March 17, 1915 in Leavitt, Neb. In 1937 she moved to Westwood, and then to Clear Creek shortly after, where she had resided for the past 60 years. She had been a longtime member of the Westwood Garden Club, was active with the Westwood Seniors and the Chester-Lake Almanor Senior Gleaners. She enjoyed tending her yard and garden, as well as all types of crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, Albert Hill. Ruby is survived by her son, Doug D'Angelo of the Lake Almanor Peninsula; granddaughter, Dena D'Angelo Frost of Manteca; and great-granddaughter, Erika Frost of Manteca. Following cremation, a celebration of her life took place at the Lake Almanor Country Club Clubhouse Dec. 2, 2002. Private inurnment will take place in the Westwood Cemetery

Helyn Teresa Domark, 84, died Sunday morning, May 26, 2002, at Enloe Community Hospital in Chico. Born May 3, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., she was raised in Chicago, moving to the west coast 35 years ago. She worked as an executive secretary for both Swift and Co., and Ford Motor Co. She wrote a column, "Almanor Almanac" for the Chester Progressive for many years. Helyn had been a resident of the Lake Almanor Peninsula for close to 25 years, moving from Anaheim, following her husband's retirement from Ford Motor Co. They had recently moved to Chico. A devoted member of Christ the King Catholic Church, she served as president of the Altar Society. She took an active part in the affairs of the Chester/Lake Almanor area as a member of the Seneca Health Car District Ladies Auxiliary, the Lake Almanor Fire Sirens Auxiliary and the Lake Almanor Country Club Women's Club. She is a former member of the Aeronutronics Wives Club of the Ford Motor Co. Helyn is survived by her husband of 53 years, Kasimir, of Chico, and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Jack Hannigan and Lee P. Hannigan, and her sister Annamae Hannigan. Following cremation, a celebration of her life will be held at the graveside in the Chester District Cemetery, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. Thurmon Jones passed away at the Sunbridge Skilled Nursing Facility in Paradise, Calif., on May 21, 2002 at the age of 82. Thurmon was born in Chicago, Ill., on February 22, 1917, and had been a longtime Lassen County resident. Before retiring, he had been employed by the Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, working with munitions. He was also an honorably discharged World War II Army veteran. He is survived by numerous half-brothers and half-sisters, as well as many nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Mr. Jones will be held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville, Calif., at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.
Gannon Matthew Williams passed away at the Lassen Community Hospital in Susanville on May 16, 2002. He was born on May 15, 2002.
He is survived by his parents, Sean and Shannon Williams of Susanville; grandparents, John and Pat Williams of Standish, and Charles and Peggy McGuffin of Brawley, Calif.; and great-grandparents, Lucille Williams of Loma Linda, Calif., Majorie McGuffin of Worland, Wyo., and Nobuko Sakura of Kahului, Hawaii. Also surviving is an aunt, Ricia Dye of Standish; and three cousins. Memorial services will be held at the Colonial Mortuary Chapel at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 31. A reception will follow at the home of John and Pat Williams, 714-795 Sagebrush Drive, Standish.
Elizabeth Ann Hallum, 83, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, after a courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease. Hallum graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa cum Laude from the School of Journalism at the University of Minnesota. She was the Lassen County Librarian from 1967 to 1981, a job she relished because she had an uncanny ability to engage people from all backgrounds to explore the world through books. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, an electrical engineer with California Pacific Utilities, in 1992. She is survived by her children Warren, Ann and Michael, grandchildren Christopher and Kirsten from Washington and Nicole and Paula, formerly of Susanville and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in her home of 17 years, Portland, Ore. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to the Benedictine Sisters Retirement Fund, 840 N. Main, Mt. Angel, Ore. 97362.
Leroy William Purdy, 75, died on May 10, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital, Reno, Nev. He was born on March 9, 1927, at Susanville, Calif., the son of Ira Ivan and Ada Margaret Wheeler Purdy. In the mid 1940s, he began his career as a logger, first working in the woods with his future brother-in-law, Bob Rea, at Camp Harvey of the Fruit Growers Supply Company. When his brother, James, returned from World War II, they formed Purdy Brothers Logging Company. They were involved in a succession of enterprises until he formed L&M Logging Company. In 1995, he semi-retired and moved to Reno. He is survived by his wife, Ardene; four children, Susan R. Mayfield, Oceanside, Calif., Gary L Purdy, Susanville, Ronda G. Purdy, Chico, Calif., and Tim I. Purdy of Susanville, and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother James, in 1996. There will be no funeral service at his request, with inurnment to be held at the family plot at Diamond Crest Cememtery, Johnstonville. James G. Mills Sr., 88, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 13, 1914, in Mississippi, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Edna Mae Morgan of Idaho. Mills is survived by a daughter, Edith Nalian of Bullhead City, Ariz.; son, James G. Mills Jr. of Los Molinas, Calif.; and brother, Harmon Victor Mills of Florida. Services will be held at a later date in Arizona.
Louie "Papa Bear" Lopez, 63, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, from complications after a second bypass operation in San Francisco. He was born Nov. 23, 1938, in Susanville, Calif. In 1973, Lopez, a Susanville native, along with three other fathers, formed their own league and linked up with the Police Athletic League because they liked its rules and regulations. He was called Papa Bear by more than 2,000 children he coached or directed during the past 22 years in the Evergreen PAL football program. In 1984, he was named PAL coach of the year. Two years ago, he and his wife, "Mama Bear" received Channel 11's Prestige Spirit of Excellence award, the first couple to receive the community honor. This year, Mr. Lopez was appointed to the PAL board. Coaching was an avocation. He made his living as a cost analyst for Ford Motor, until the local Ford plant closed, and then for Lockheed. At the time of his death he was working as a computer technician and a teacher aide in two classes at Whaley Elementary School in the Evergreen School District. He is survived by wife, Corene, of San Jose, Calif.; sons, Darrick Lopez and Mario Lopez both of San Jose; brother, Albert Lopez of Garden Grove; sister, Angie Palmatier of Redding; and four grandchildren with a fifth on the way. Services were held at the football field at Silver Creek High School, San Jose, last week and interment was at Westwood Memorial Park, Westwood. Mary Alice Gerald, 64, died on Nov. 13, 2002, in Susanville. She was born on Dec. 23, 1937, in Jackson, Miss. Gerald was a nurse for 15 years and married to Clifton Gerald for 48 years. The Geralds moved to Susanville when they both retired in 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Cleo Easom. She was survived by her son Charles and wife Christine of San Jose, Calif. and daughter, Connie and her husband, Doug of Anaheim; seven grandchildren, Angie, Jenifer, April, Michael, Brittany, Anthony and Quenton; brothers, Mack of Oklahoma, Johnny and Jerry of Arkansas and Donny of Midway, Tenn.; sisters, Lynn Tabar of Little Rock, Ark. and Willie Fitzgerald of Midway, Tenn. Memorial services for Gerald were held on Saturday, Nov. 16 at Walton's Colonial Mortuary.
Hollie Nolen "Little Nanny" Hughes, 84, died on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 in Rudy, Ark. She was born on Oct. 25, 1918 in Arkansas. Hughes was a longtime resident of Susanville, moving to Delight, Ark. and then to Rudy, where she lived for the past 17 years. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Stallings of Rudy; sons, Kelsey Nolen of Susanville and Charles Nolen of Delight; sisters, Aleen Short of North Highlands, Calif. and Barbara McLelland of Rudy; brother, Perry Jackson of Barling, Ark., seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Rudy New Hope Pentecostal Church of God with burial at Mount McCurry Cemetery
in Rudy.
