Jeffrey T. Clarke, 46, died on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at the Teller Farm Open Space Trail in Boulder County, Colo. He was born on June 18, 1956 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Charles Victor Clarke and Anne Mary Donovan. He married Carol Meihaus on Sept. 25, 1982 in Los Angeles. He received a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and received his medical degree for the University of California-Davis in 1984. He was employed as a physician in family practice at the Coal Creek Family Medicine in Louisville, Colo. He was a member of the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Boulder, the Meadows Swim and Tennis Club of Boulder, the Boulder County Medical Society, the Colorado Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians, the Avista Hospital Medical Staff, the Avista Medical Associates Board Member and a staff member of Clinica Campensina of Lafayette, Colo. He is survived by his wife, Carol of Boulder; sons, Christopher Charles, Matthew John and Jeffrey Donovan Clarke, all of Boulder; sisters, Patricia Schmoll of Walnut Creek, Calif. and Barbara Carlyle of Pleasonton, Calif. and brother, Charles M. Clark of Cleveland. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the church with Father Dorino De Lazzer as the celebrant. Services concluded with a burial in the church cemetery. A reception followed at the church. Eleanor Delores Brown, 79, died on Nov. 20 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Reno. She was born on March 31, 1923 and was a resident of Lassen County her whole life. Brown worked for the Sierra Pacific Industries for 20 years, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and loved visiting with her friends either in person or on the phone. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a Lassen High School graduate and alumna. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Curtis Brown, in 1999. She is survived by her daughters, Kim Brown of Fresno and Leah and husband, Richard Gorbet of Reno and granddaughter, Rachel Gorbet. Services for Brown were held on Sunday, Nov. 24 at Walton's Chapel with a rosary that followed at the Sacred Heart Church. Funeral Mass was held on Monday, Nov. 25 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery, next to her husband, Curtis. The family asks that all donations in lieu of flowers be made to the Lassen High School Alumni Association, American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
Coy Whisehunt, 84, died on Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at his home in Gerber, Calif. He was a long time resident of Susanville until 1999. Services were held on Thursday, Nov. 21. at the Chapel of Flowers Funeral Home in Red Bluff. Burial took place at the Janesville Cemetery
on Friday, Nov. 22.
Irma Emelia Capehart, 85, formerly of Loyalton, died Nov. 14, 2002 at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmicheal. Irma was born on July 13, 1917 in Sierra City to Andrew and Emilia Marie Francioli Peroni. She was a long-time member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Loyalton and a 20-year resident of Citrus Heights. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William "Bill" Craven, Leland Wilkinson and Scott Capehart; and sisters, Louise Ghidossi, Perina Ghidossi and Mabel Aili. Irma is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Evans of Citrus Heights and Dixie Johnson of Vinton; brothers, Bert Peroni of Ukiah and John Peroni of Portola; three grandsons and seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Nov. 19, 2002 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Loyalton. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery.
Della L. Estes, 89, of Pittville and Fall River Mills areas, died on Nov. 17, 2002 in Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. Della was born on Dec. 1, 1912 in Pitville and was a homemaker. She is survived by her sons, Rollin Schortgen of Little Valley, David Estes of Redding, Melvin Estes of Chico and Wally Estes of McArthur; daughter, Clara Robertson of Reno, Nev.; sister, Elvira Knowles of Anderson; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Nov. 21, 2002 at the Pine Grove Cemetery
in McArthur. Memorial contributions can be made to Mayers Memorial Hospital Memorial Fund of Fall River Mills, California.
Gerald Roger Golla, 66, a Quincy resident since 1989, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at SunBridge, in Quincy, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. The only child of George and Eleanor Golla, he was born in Strongfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, April 10, 1936, and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1952. They settled in Oakland, and he graduated from Oakland High School in 1954. He graduated from Oakland Junior College in 1956, and from the UC-Berkeley in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in criminology. He then entered the U.C. Hastings College of Law and obtained his law degree (juris doctor) in 1961. He was admitted to the California State Bar in January 1962, joined the Benicia law firm of Winters and Winters and later affiliated with O.F. Fenstermacher in Pittsburg. He was appointed City Attorney for Pittsburg, in Contra Costa County, in 1967. He left in 1971 to affiliate with Antioch City Attorney Michael Huffaker and work in civic practice there. He established a private practice in Pittsburg in 1972, specializing in criminal and family law. He served as Judge Pro Tem, in the then-Delta Municipal Court in Pittsburg, to Judges Gerald Belleci and Manuel Rose from 1981-84. He retired fin 1986, and moved to Quincy in 1989. He was a member of the Quincy Sport Shooting Association. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed shooting, tinkering around the house, talking politics, and swapping stories and jokes over coffee with the early crowd at Perko's Caf in Quincy. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; three children from a previous marriage, Tina Wynn of Concord, Vince Golla of San Ramon, and Kelly Skeaton of Sacramento; and six grandchildren. At his request, no services were held. The family prefers donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
Frieda Hedrick, 75, died Nov. 19, 2002.
Frieda was born and raised in the part of Indian Valley known as Northarm to Reda Springer and Art Worth of Greenville on March 25, 1927. She was an active bowler and was on leagues in Grass Valley at the time of her death. She was a past president of the Stivers Indian Cemetery
Association and was instrumental in the improvements done on cemeteries. Her hobbies included coming to Quincy and cooking for everyone, traveling to Ukiah to see her family and going to Berry Creek and Mooretown. Frieda was preceded in death by her husband, Martin W. Hedrick, Sr., her son Martin W. Jr., and brother, Charles Forrest Stark. She is survived by sisters, Rachel Hedrick and Mollie Sosa of Quincy and Susie Campbell of Redwood Valley; daughters, Lillian Hughes and Martina Harrison of Grass Valley and Roselene McGary of Florida; seven grandchildren, three great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 30, at the residence of Merv and Vivian Hansen, 1021 Bucks Lake Road in Quincy. Sylvia Daryl Engelstad, 69, formerly of Lake Almanor, died Oct. 21, 2002, in Hurricane, Utah. Sylvia was born July 1, 1933, in San Diego She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Pam Trebes; son, Larry Engelstad; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at the residence of Pam Trebes.
Theodore (Theo) Holderegger, 76, of Clear Creek/Chester, died Nov. 18, 2002 in Placerville. He was born Oct. 19, 1926, in San Mateo. Theo was preceded in death by two brothers and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, Ruby of Chester; sons, Ted of Chester and Tod of York, Pa; daughters, Judy Kaiser and Joann Small of Wash.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Chester Memorial Hall on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances should be made to Seneca Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Eunice Joan Davis, 67, died at her residence in Quincy, on Nov. 14, 2002. Eunice was born Oct. 16, 1935 to William and Eunice Horr Huff in Sacramento. She has been a resident of Quincy for the past 10 years, moving here from Phoenix, Ariz. Eunice enjoyed sewing and became an avid fan of the Sacramento Kings Basketball Team. She is preceded in death by her late husband Vernon and one brother. Eunice is survived by her children, Linda Smith of Corona, Dawn Dee Davis of Quincy, and Douglas Myers of Reno, Nev.; brother, Jack Huff of San Diego; twelve grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Michael David James, 51, died Jan. 22, 2003 at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Michael was born Nov. 14, 1951 to Perry and Thelma Johnson James in Yuba City and has spent the past 50 years residing in Chester. Michael served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1969-1973. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and was a member of the Mule Deer Foundation. He was a student of western history and enjoyed collecting western artifacts and books of all types, as well as studying genealogy. He was a member of the Chester Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan James. Michael is survived by his daughters, Dawn Thomas of Port Townsend, Wash., and Becky Hernandez of Aberdeen, Wash.; mother, Thelma Harvath of Chester; sisters, Donna Billings of Redding; Patricia Cress of Oregon; three grandsons and two granddaughters. A celebration of Michael's life was held at the Chester Baptist Church on Jan. 25, 2003. Interment will take place upon the opening of the Chester District Cemetery. Vernon Edsel Hunter, 83, died with his family by his side on Jan. 25, 2003 at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Vernon was born April 21, 1919 in Stillwell, Okla., to Charles and Martha Chastain Hunter. He acquired his ethic of hard work while on the family farm. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he moved to Westwood where he resided for seven years prior to moving to Chester in 1957. He was a self-employed carpenter for 60 years. His passion in life was that of his trade and his workmanship can be appreciated in the many homes he has built and remodeled in the Chester-Lake Almanor Basin and Westwood areas. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Vernon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Hazel of Chester; son, Jerry L. Hunter of Henderson, Nev.; daughter, Jeanie Ann Hunter of Sparks, Nev.; sister, Dorothy Schaffer of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Vern's life will take place at 2 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 at the Chester Church of Christ. Interment will take place upon the opening of the Chester District Cemetery. Josephine (Jo) Adalaide Waddell died Jan. 24, 2003 at Seneca Hospital in Chester, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Jo was born June 11, 1930 in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada to Glady's and Joseph Martino. She grew up in British Columbia with her nine sisters and brothers. At age 18, she decided to travel to the United States with her best friend. While in Texas, she met her husband of 51 years, Jack Waddell. They married, and moved to Chester. Jo was a long-time resident of Chester, living there for 53 years. She worked as a waitress for 20 years, then 17 years as the meat sales lady at Norm's Butcher Block. She retired and went to work with her daughter in floral counter sales at "The Enchanted Florist." She was involved in the community for many years. Josephine is survived by her daughter, Jacquie Mattingly, and her son, Joe Waddell, both of Chester; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Albert Matino of Oliver, B.C., Mickey Martino of Kaloops, B.C., Bill Martino of Vancouver, B.C., and her adopted brother, Leonard Marti.; three sisters, Happy Leavers of Vancouver, B.C., Pearl Sanders of Albany, Ore., and Victoria Williams of Orland. Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at Lake Almanor Community Church at 2 p.m. A full reception will be held at the church following services.
Patricia Lynn Traylor Blandford, 49, died in Portola on Jan. 24, 2003. Patricia was born April 25, 1953 to Laurence Ray and Nola Jean McFerrin Traylor. She had been a resident of Portola for the past two years. Patricia is survived by her husband Steve of Portola; son Clayton of Portola; brother Larry Traylor of Reno, Nev.; sister Darlene Lowrie of Reno, Nev.; and five nieces. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
