Frank Kenneth Davies, 77, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Washoe Village in Reno, Nev. He was born on March 17, 1925, in Los Angeles California, and had resided in Lassen County for the past 25 years. Davies, along with his wife Dolores, was the owner and operator of the Korner Wash & Dry in Susanville. At one time, he had been self-employed as a contractor; developing avocado ranches and reservoirs in the Santa Barbara area. He had also held cattle interests in Santa Barbara and Lassen County. He was a member of the Baptist church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores of Susanville; son, Larry Davies of Susanville and daughters, Christine Robertson of Janesville, Donna Bonnet of Reno and Karen Hosier of Chico. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. A celebration of life washeld at the Lassen County Senior Center on Saturday, Aug. 3.
Hubert "Bert" Duke, 66, died on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital. He was born on Sept. 25, 1935 in Big Cedar, Okla. He had resided in Lassen County for the past 38 years, coming from Stockton, Calif. He worked for the Department of Corrections for 22 years as an administrator. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He loved to work, so he worked in different occupations throughout his life, until he could work no more. He was always outdoors hunting, fishing, camping and sailing, as he had a great love for the sea. He had many loves in his life but his greatest love was his family and the time he had telling them stories of his travels around the world and all the different people he met. He is survived by his wife, Gerald Deen Rice Duke; sons, Bill Duke of Susanville and Dean Duke of San Diego, Calif.; daughter, Jeanette Cook of Crescent City, Calif.; brothers, Gean Duke of Oakland, Calif., Bill Duke of Seattle, Wash. and Ray Duke of Carson City, Nev. and sisters, Ruby Henderson of Willits, Calif., Faye Burgess of Willits, Calif. and Bonnie Herrera of Stockton. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren. No services are planned at this time.
Quincy entrepreneur Janet Sue Janowski, died Aug. 5, 2002, at her residence with her family at her side. Janet was born June 12, 1949 to Jack and Jeannette Smith Bullard in Eau Claire, Wis. She has been a Quincy resident for the past ten years, moving here from Martinez. A retired CPA, Janet, along with her husband, owned the establishment of The Feather Bed, one of Plumas Counties finest Bed and Breakfast Inns. Janet is a longtime member of the Quincy Soroptimist International Club where she had twice served as president. She was a former member and past president of the Pleasant Hill Toastmasters Club. She has received national recognition for her breakfast recipes. Janet is preceeded in death by one brother. She is survived by her husband, Bob Janowski of Quincy; three nieces and one nephew. Following cremation, a celebration of Janet's life will take place at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at the Quincy Community Methodist Churh. Marvin "Paul" Jessup, 62, died Aug. 3, 2002, at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Marvin was born June 30, 1940 in Santa Rosa. He was raised in Humbolt County and graduated from Moranda High School in 1958 where he also lettered in football. He moved to Chester two years ago from Sonoma, where he had resided for 11 years. Paul had retired from the Loomis-Fargo Corp., where he had worked for 20-years. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army following the Korean conflict and during the Cuban missile crisis. Paul was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking and hunting. He is a former member of the Napa Elks Lodge. Paul is survived by his wife, Caren of Chester; daughters, Susan Fernandez of Woodland and Kim Jessup of Vacaville; step-daughters, Mandy Revenger of Santa Rosa and Melinda Parker of Rohnert Park; brothers, Daniel of Vacaville, Tommy of McKinleyville, Timmy, Mark and Matthew all of Napa; sisters, Chris Con of Garberville, Virginia Logan of Nevada City and Nancy Jessup of Chico; along with two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Following cremation Quincy, a celebration of Paul's life will be held in the Chester District cemetery at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9, 2002. James Lee "Jim" Music, 31, died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at his home in Susanville. He was born in Susanville on Dec. 4, 1970 and had been a lifetime resident of Lassen County. He had been employed as a deputy sheriff for the past nine years. His duties over those nine years extended to boat patrol, dispatch, resident deputy of Westwood and Susanville and bailiff for Judge Ridgley Lazard. He was a 1989 Lassen High School graduate and attended Lassen College. He also attended the Police Academy at Sacramento City College and graduated near the top of his class. Jim was a member of the Lassen County Peace Officers Association. He loved deer hunting, fishing and motorcycling; and was a fan of both NASCAR and the Oakland Raiders. He was also an accomplished craftsman of both leather and oak. He is survived by his son, Travis Richard Music of Susanville; parents, Marvin and Linda Music of Susanville and sister Debbie Engelhart of Roseville, Calif. Services were held on Friday, Aug. 2 at the Susanville Assembly of God Church. Interment followed at the Janesville Cemetery. Retired Plumas County Auditor, Ann Pattan, 71, died July 29, 2002 at Plumas District Hospital. Ann was born on Feb. 17, 1931, to Roby and San Carter Bishop in Grass Valley. She moved to Plumas County at the age of five. Ann lived in Quincy for 66 years. She was a 1949 graduate of Quincy High School and went on to further her education at the University of Nevada at Reno. Ann worked in the Plumas County Auditors office for 18 years before being elected as auditor in 1982. She served three terms in office, retiring in 1994. Ann was a former member and past president of the State Association of County Auditors. Ann is remembered for the expertise she shared with the many special districts and departments of the county and her willingness to help inform them of the budget process and to work out any problem. Ann enjoyed golfing and bowling, and always looked forward to her vacations to the Hawaiian islands. She is survived by her husband, Gary of Quincy; sister, Jan Self of Manhattan, Mont.; along with one niece and one nephew. Per her request, following her cremation no services will be held. Diane Lee Perry, 58, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, in Yuba City. She was born Oct. 1, 1943, in Peoria, Ill. She was a 28-year resident of Marysville-Yuba City, and was a current resident of Lake Almanor West. Diane worked as a supervisor for the Employment Development Department in Marysville, and, prior to retirement, as a manager at the EDD office in Colusa for four years. She retired Jan. 20, 2000. She was secretary for the Lake Almanor West auxiliary; a member of the Lady 9ers golf group and the Lady Elks of Chester Elks Lodge No. 2626; and a former member of the Yuba Feather Sweet Adelines singing group. She was predeceased by her father, Virgil Sprague, and brother Gary Sprague. Survivors include her companion, Tommy McCormack of Lake Almanor West; her sons, Jeffrey Perry of Folsom, and Daniel Perry of Yuba City; her daughter, Julie Martin of Carson City, Nev.; her mother, Virginia L. Sprague of Broken Arrow, Okla.; brothers, Jerry Sprague of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Dennis Sprague of Peoria, Ill.; sisters, Phyllis Turner, Jeanne Orrison and Nancy Huff, all of Broken Arrow, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. Shirley Louise Thomas, 56, died July 28, 2002 at her home outside of Greenville. Shirley was born Feb. 27, 1946 in Merced. She has been a resident of the Greenville area for the past seven years. Shirley was a homemaker who enjoyed travel, all crafts and reading. She is survived by her husband, Joseph of Greenville; her children, Katherine Espiritu of Milpitas, Fred Hawkins of Ala., Vern Hawkins and Edward Hawkins, both of the East Bay; sister, Virginia Scull of Los Banos; and grandchild James Ray Hawkins. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 10 a.m., Aug. 7, 2002 at the graveside in the Greenville District Cemetery. Howard Miller Thomas, 81, died July 31, 2002 at Plumas District Hospital. Howard was born January 12, 1921 in Lemoore. He had recently moved from Redding to Quincy. Howard served his country as a B-17 Ball Turret Gunner in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He had worked in the plumbing and pipe fitting trade for 20 years, retiring in 1973. He owned and operated Acorn Plumbing in Hayward. Howard was an avid and accomplished bass fisherman, enjoyed hunting and spending time in the outdoors. He had been a longtime member of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Local 342. Howard is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Quincy; daughter, Sharon Plitzko of Hayward; son, Dale Thomas of Quincy; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Donald "Don" Dean Thurman, 69, died on Aug. 4, 2002. He was born on June 1, 1933, in Caddo, Okla. and lived most of his life in Greenville. Don was an avid reader and loved to discuss politics. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He is preceeded in death by his parents, General and Jewell Hunter Thurman and brother, Jesse Thurman. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Shari Haux, Jeninel Jacobs and Jill Thurman; sisters, Mary Kay Deal, Judy Jenner, Royce Humphney and Jane Neiber; brothers, Rick and Jim Thurman; stepson Russ Boots; eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. A celebration of Don's life will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at the Greenville cemetery at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at Fehrmans Mortuary on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 5-8 p.m.
JoAnne Pool Wilson, 71, passed away Monday, July 8, 2002, with her loving and devoted husband, Ronnie Wilson by her side. She was born JoAnne Pool, on October 30, 1931 in Westwood, CA, Lassen County. For the rest of her life, she would consider it to be Gods Country. She graduated from Westwood High in 1949, where she was also an active member of Jobs Daughters. She and her family moved to Klamath, CA in 1958, where she was employed with Simpson Timber Company. After going through the 1964 flood she and her family bought a new home and relocated to Arcata, CA. JoAnne spent all of her adult years as a devoted wife, loving mother and proud Grandmother. She was active in PTA and cub scouts.
In her adult life, she and Ronnie hunted and fished the lakes and the fields of Northern California. The last couple years of her life they bought land again in Gods Country where they spent many days fishing and enjoying their many friends. She was always known as the luckiest fisher-woman around. When no one else would be catching fish, she would be the one to hook the big one. She used to attribute this to "the way she held her mouth". If you asked her, she would explain to you, with a smile and a wink, that this was a necessary part of a fishing technique.
She gave her family her love, unconditionally through all their trials and tribulations, never passing judgment, but always dispensing understanding. She was always there to give sound advice or a good sound scolding, both of which she always gave with love.
She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Wilson, her son Ron Wilson and wife Darlene; daughter Suzi Masterson and husband Pat, whom she saw as a second son; bother-in-law Jack Wilson and wife Jackie; brother-in-law Richard Lohman and wife Sue; sister-in-law Kathryn Miller; and four grandchildren, Tami Evans and husband Mark, Ronnie Wilson and wife Jessica, Johnathan Masterson, and Lisa DeSilva and husband Brian. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Charlie and Ryan Evans, Kody Wilson and Scott DeSilva. She is also survived by her cousin Jean Chandley and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Airl Pool and Blanche Pool. She leaves behind many dear friends, too numerous to count.

Roy "Dusty" Harold Wright, 90, died on June 24, 2002, at Carson Valley Residential Care Center in Gardnerville, Nev. Roy was born on March 11, 1912 to Aaron Wright and Mary Knoefler in Dodge City, Kan. He graduated from High School in Dodge City, Kan., and became a professional boxer, ranking 7th in the world and was the Kansas State Champ as a Featherweight in 1937. In the late 30's, he moved to Portola and was a resident for 63 years, and more recently was a resident of Carson Valley Residential Care Center in Gardnerville, Nev. He owned and operated Dusty's Garage. and was retired from Western Pacific Railroad. During World War II, he worked as a welder in the ship yards in Vallejo, receiving a Medal of Service from the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Roy was preceeded in death by his son Larry. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Ernestine Wright of Gardnerville, Nev.; his son, Douglas Aaron Wright of Reno, Nev.; his daughter, Sharline Helena Doerr of Clearfield, Utah; sisters Mildred Gaudes of Waterford, Wis., and Vera Demorit of Dodge City, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
