Betty Alderman, 80, died at Eastern Plumas District Hospital Long Term Care on July 16, 2002. Betty was born in Superior, Wis. to John and Elizabeth Sackett Corbin on June 14, 1922. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse. She served in the U.S. Air Force Womens Army Air Force during World War II. Betty moved to Portola in 1954. She taught physical education and art at Portola High School, retiring in 1978. She also owned the ceramic shop in Portola "Cracked Pot" for 19 years. She was preceeded in death by four brothers. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, and good friend Myra Randa. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Library, 34 Third, Portola, CA 96122.
Robert LaTour, 68, of Graeagle died at his home on July 16, 2002. Robert was born in Duluth, Minn. on May 29, 1934 to Alvin and Marjorie Norland LaTour. Robert was a salesman for Pacific Bell and AT&T. He retired from AT&T after 27 years. He then worked for the San Juan School District for eight years as a custodian. Robert moved to Graeagle six years ago. He was active in the Mohawk Valley Fourth of July Celebration, the Calpine Elks Lodge and held an office in the Graeagle Homeowners Association. He is survived by his wife, Judy of Graeagle; daughters, Loree Smith and Tracy Sorensen, both of Walnut Creek; his step-sons, Eric Tieslau of Lancaster and Mark Tieslau of Lake Oswego, Ore.; his sisters, Linda LaTour of Duluth, Minn. and Sandy Gotche of Bowling Wood, Ill.; and two grandsons. A memorial service was held at the Calpine Elks Lodge on July 20, 2002. Private family inurnment will be at a later date. Dan Farris, 70, died at his home in Graeagle on July 8, 2002. He was born in Little Rock, Ark., Jan. 19, 1930. He graduated from Long Beach State with teaching credentials and from Chico State with a Masters Degree in Psychology. Dan first taught at the Graeagle Mill Pond School when he came to Plumas County 49 years ago. He spent over 30 years with Plumas Unified School District, teaching at Pioneer School, Quincy Elementary and Quincy Jr.-Sr. High School. He was also the counselor at Quincy High, and taught aviation at Quincy High and Feather River College. He served in the U.S. Navy. Dan loved to fly, enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He was a member of Portola Station Baptist Church and taught Adult Sunday School for many years. Survivors include his wife, Anne Marie Farris of Graeagle; his son, Mark of Graeagle; daughters, Susan Cash of Sloat, Sharon Carter of Quincy, and Kim Malone of Thousand Oaks; brothers, Dave of Rocklin and Jim of Quincy; sister, Mary Mathews of San Bernardino, and eight grandchildren. Memorial services were held at Portola Station Baptist Church July 12. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. A memorial scholarship fund is being established at Plumas Bank.
George Filippini, 78, died June 12, 2002. George was born on March 23, 1924, to Swiss emigrants Julius and Erminia Filippini in Loyalton. He attended Long Point School and graduated from Loyalton High School in 1941. In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He married Clare Zollinger in 1948. George was a cattle rancher most of his life. He liked horses, cows, green fields and water. He was a long-standing member of the Sierra Valley Water Company, and served as Sierra County Supervisor from 1975-83. He and Clare enjoyed a happy marriage of 54 years. His sons, Michael and Timothy, stayed in the area, and he helped raise his five grandchildren, and great-grandson. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Bernardo of Sacramento.
Margery B. "Maggie" Heald, 87, died July 4, 2002 at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Quincy. She was born May 21, 1915 in Reno, Nev. "Maggie" was raised in Seneca. She attended college at San Jose State and Stanford University. In 1963 she purchased Maggie's Maple Leaf Tavern and Recreation Vehicle Park in Belden, which she operated until 1997. "Maggie" also served as the Post Master for Belden for many years. She was affectionally known as the "Queen of Yellow Creek" by the residents and visitors of the canyon. She had been a professional photographer and while residing in the central valley was instrumental in starting more than 30 Alcoholics Anonymous chapters. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Cliff and her grandson, Mike Lamson. She is survived by her son, Richard Lamson of Bullhead City, Ariz.; her granddaughters, Kathy Dejanvier of Antioch and Sherry Lamson of Washington state; her grandson, Rick Lamson of Torrance; and one great-grandson. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy a celebration of her life will be held Sept. 14, 2002 at 3 p.m., at Tobin in the Feather River. Mary Ellen Schmidt, 75, died July 16, 2002, at Indian Valley District Hospital in Greenville. Born Aug. 5, 1926, in San Jose, Mary moved to Plumas County in 1951, residing in Quincy for eight years before moving to Taylorsville, where she lived for 43 years. Mary served the Indian Valley region as a contract mail carrier for 35 years. She also managed the Arlington Trailer Park for more than 30 years. Mary enjoyed her trips to Reno, Nev., to try her luck, and was admired by her family for her dedication and devotion to them. She is preceeded in death by her first husband, Bill Sr.; her second husband, George; and one sister. She is survived by her children, William Jr. of Placerville; Michael of Red Bluff; Joseph of Maui, Hawaii; and Georgette of Taylorsville; six sisters and one brother; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Ferhman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of her life was held at the graveside in the Taylorsville District Cemetery

Henry Behm Finlay, 88, died July 16, 2002, at Emmanuel Health Care in Yuba City. Henry was born to English and Canadian immigrants James and Edith Robar Finlay on Dec. 24, 1913 in Rifle, Colo. At the outset of World War II he joined the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific as a Combat Engineer. In June of 1959, Henry and his family moved from Lomita to Chester to go to work with Collins Pine Co. Henry served the company as a welder/millrite until his retirement in 1982 and was still called upon by the company for his expertise years after. Henry was a long-time member of the Lumber and Industrial Workers Union Local 3074. He lent his support to the Westwood Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star by constructing any item they may have needed. A dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Theda of Chester; children Stephen, Cheryl and Judy, all of Yuba City, along with Bruce of Murphy, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is preceeded in death by one brother, Gilbert. A celebration of Henry's life was held at the graveside in the Chester District Cemetery

James W. Wright, 75, died at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy on July 5, 2002. He was born in San Pedro on July 10, 1926. He had been a Plumas County resident for the past 38 years, living in Quincy for four years before moving to Meadow Valley in 1968. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country during World War Two. He retired from Safeway Stores after 26 years of service as a retail grocery clerk. He had been a longtime member of the Quincy Elks Lodge, the Retail Clerks Union Local 588 and had served as a member of the Meadow Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish, hunt, camp and especially enjoyed sharing this time with his family. He also enjoyed the game of golf and was a member of the Mount Hough Golf Club. He is preceeded in death by his son, Troy Hampton and his brother, Robert Wright. He is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Meadow Valley; children, Lynda Passmore of Chico, Myrna Bristow, Kim Marie Powell and Robert Wright of Oroville; his sisters Natalie Lovinfosse of Magalia and Nadine Howard of Riddle, Ore.; along with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitations were held July 9, 2002. A celebration of his life was held at the graveside in the Meadow Valley District Cemetery

Mabel "Mabs" Kathleen Shattock-Stowell, 92, died on June 27, 2002 at the Valley West Health Care Center in Eugene, Ore. She was born on Oct. 5, 1909 in London, England to Victor and Maude Shattock. "Mabs" was a resident of Plumas County from 1938 to 1989. She worked at the Plumas County Library in the 1950's and was the receptionist-secretary to the Plumas Forest Supervisor in Quincy for twenty years, retiring in 1980. She moved to Tigard, Ore. in 1989. "Mabs" enjoyed golf, skiing, oil painting and gardening. She was a member of the "Order of the Eastern Star," Soroptimist Club of Quincy and was a hospital volunteer. "Mabs" was married to Morton Deene Stowell for 27 years. She was preceeded in death by her brothers, Ron and Jim Shattock; and sisters, Elsie Thomas, Irene Gogna and Eva Lee. She is survived by her sons, Douglas D. Stowell of Pleasant Hill, Ore., and Richard K. Stowell, DDS of Sparks, Nev.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be an informal graveside service at Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery
in Pleasant Hill, Ore., where she will be interred.
Clyde Cleo Mann, 70, died June 30, 2002 in Anderson. Clyde was born Dec. 26, 1931 in St. Louis, Mo. He joined the Navy when he was 19, and served on the USS Dixie from 1951-1955. He lived in Orange County until 1967, and then in various northern California communities such as Paradise, Portola, Greenville and Cottonwood. Clyde was a barber and Jehovah's Witness minister. He loved his work and golfing. He was preceeded in death by his first wife Shirley and his second wife Vanelia. He is survived by his three children: Rebecca Dewhirst of Portola, Laura Marchus of Quincy and Dave Mann of Portola; his sister, Delphi Russell of Florrisant, Mo.; and seven grandsons and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the Cottonwood Kingdom Hall on July 6, 2002 following cremation.
Ron Graham, 68, died June 17, 2002 at his home in Newport, Wash. He was an ordained minister and accomplished teacher, Mr. Graham served on the founding faculty of three colleges. After moving to Newport, he and his wife established Life Prep Academy, a private Christian school. He was born Nov. 13, 1933, in Hollywood, to Thomas and Thelma Graham. He lived in Chester, and graduated from Westwood High School in 1951. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base, teaching electronics and developing training manuals. While in the service, he met Peggy (Margaret Jane) McCormick in Aurora, Colo. Mr. Graham worked at the National Bureau of Standards as one of the nations earliest computer programmers. He earned master's degrees in mathematics and divinity and completed his pre-doctoral work at the University of Denver. He taught at Washington State University, Oral Roberts University, Yavapai College, Metropolitan State College, and other schools. As a pastor, Mr. Graham, was involved in outreach and missions work in American Samoa and Eastern Europe. He also preached and taught in Newport, Wash. area churches. Mr. Graham is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Newport, Wash.; daughter, Lynn Axel of Newport, Wash.; son, Mike Graham of Newport, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on July 16, 2002 at Glen Oaks Memorial Park for Arthur LaSalle Davey, 81, of Chico. Mr. Davey died July 12, 2002 at a Chico hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1920 to William James and Hattie Lucina Davey in Garden Valley. He was a graduate of El Dorado County High School. He was a 1st Sargent in the U.S. Army (Airborne) from 1940-1945, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a building contractor, as well as a member of the Chico Elks Lodge, and the Chico Police and Fireman's Association. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his summer residence at Lake Almanor. Survivors include his wife, Helen Grace Noyes Davey of Camino; his son, Wayne Davey of Camarillo; and his daughters, Carolyn Driscoll of Petaluma and Sandy Condon of Quincy; and two grandchildren. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Almanor-Prattville Volunteer Fire Department in care of the Brusie Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.
