Clifford D. Combs, 56, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital in Susanville. He was born in El Cerrito, Calif., June 3, 1946, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 24 years. He had been a carpenter, and had worked for various construction companies over a 30-year period. He was also a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the US Army. He is survived by his son, Clifford Louis Combs of Redlands, Calif.; daughters, Elita and Camille Combs of Susanville and Lynette Adams-Combs of Redlands, Calif.; step-daughters, Lorraine Rusich of Yucca Valley, Calif.; Sonna Harrison of Alabama, and Antia Schwaderer of Georgia; and father, Arthur Wedge of Alabama. Also surviving are seven brothers and sisters living in Alabama; 18 grandchildren Memorial services are planned at this time.
Myrtle Cooper, 98, died at Snow Line Convalescence in Folsom, Calif., on Friday, July 5, 2002. She was born in Missouri on March 25, 1904, and had been a Lassen County resident for 36 years. Cooper was a member of the Baptist faith and was very devout. She is survived by one daughter, Frances L. Looper of Anderson, Calif., five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service today, Tuesday, July 9 at 1 p.m. at Diamond Crest Cemetery. She will be buried next to her husband Sam Cooper who preceded her in death.
James Wells Lynch-Cozart, 45, died at his home in Portola on June 22, 2002. He had been a resident of Plumas County for 13 years. He owned and operated Wizard Electronics. He served in the U.S. Army from 1973-1975. James is preceded in death by his brother William Cozart. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Bea Cozart of Redmond, Ore.; sisters Debbie Vollink, Janet Jeffreys, Patti Cozart and Billie-Jean Cozart; his brother, Patrick Lynch; his children Symon Lynch, Jared Lynch and James DuVall. Inurnment will take place in Redmond Memorial Garden in Redmond, Ore.
Kenneth "Fred" Englebrecht, 47, died on Monday, June 17, 2002. He was born on Feb. 10, 1955, in Oakland. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, fishing, and gardening. He was a very spiritual person who was always in tune with nature. He expressed himself in his music, which was his passion. He is survived by his wife, Luz; daughter, Julie; mother, Beth; three sisters, Dena of Lincoln, Calif., Laura and husband Duane of Tahoe Vista, Calif. and Meg and husband Rich of Janesville; 13 nephews and 7 nieces. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Engelbrecht. A celebration of life will take place in August.
Norwood Cameron Jones, 87, died at the Tahoe Pacific Rehabilitation Hospital in Sparks on Friday, June 14, 2002. He was born in the Philippines on April 1, 1915, and had moved to the Janesville area from Southern California 20 years ago. Jones, along with his wife Barbara, designed and built their home on their seven acres. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Janesville; son, Dana Eugene Jones of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter, Michelle Lynne Lockhart of Alta Loma, Calif. and brother, Heber P. Jones of Fullerton, Calif. He is also survived by grandchildren, David Theodore Perry, Scott Allan Perry and Michael Brian Perry; and great-grandchildren, Brenden Perry and Trinity Loulynne Perry. Private memorial services are planned for later this summer.
Florence Pearl Miner Kruse, 99, died on June 17, 2002 at Eastern Plumas Long Term Care in Portola. Florence was born Oct. 18, 1902, in Fremont, Neb. She was a clerk at several grocery stores in Reno, including Sewells. She had been a Plumas County resident for the past 10 years. Florence was a member of O.E.S. in Sacramento, attended the Graeagle Community Church and loved animals. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Ralph Kruse, daughter; Lois Elaine Rushing, and brother, Orville Miner. She is survived by daughter, June Harrison of Graeagle; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Following cremation, there will be a private family inurnment.
Elaine "Niecei" Moore, 48, died in Doyle, on Monday, June 17, 2002. She was born in Mason City, Iowa on June 25, 1953, and had been a Lassen County resident for the last 27 years. Moore was known for her work with handicapped children. She was a member of the state PTA board, and was a past president of the local PTA. She was also a member of the Arts Council, enjoyed woodworking, and acquiring collectibles. She was a very affable person and enjoyed being around others all the time. She is survived by her husband, Dinty of Milford; daughter, Tasha Moore of Susanville; sons, Dinty Moore of Bothell, Wash., Zebulun Moore of Susanville and Dillon of Paradise; brothers, Marvin Heston of Seattle, Wash. and Keith Heston of Bend, Wash.; sisters, Cynthia Newcombe of Eugene, Ore. and Ellen Heston of Sutherlin, Calif. and two grandchildren. Services were held on Friday, June 21 at her residence. Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 22 at the Milford Cemetery.
Chester "Chet" Lawrence Pinkerton, 35, formerly of Susanville, died at his home in Phenix City, Ala., on Wednesday, June 5, 2002. He was born on Feb. 5, 1967 in Longview, Wash. He was an ironworker foreman and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his mother, Delores Pinchen of Puyallup, Wash.; father, Michael Meyers of Longview; stepfather, John Pinkerton of Portland, Ore.; daughters, Michelle, Sarah and Stevie Lee Pinkerton; stepchildren Robert, Angel and Zachary Pinkerton of Phenix City; his former wife, Shawna Baird and grandparents Ray and Marian Edholm of Smartsville, Calif. and the Meyers of Longview. Services were held on Sunday, June 9 at Vance Memorial Chapel in Phenix City. Interment followed at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Josephine Anna Terry, 79, died on May 25, 2004, at her residence in Susanville. She was a Lassen County resident for the past three years, coming from San Leandro. She was a concentration camp survivor during World War II and also a World War II bride. She loved to gamble, spend time with her kids, grandchildren and family. She was a member of the Catholic faith. She is survived by her sons, Duane and his wife Karen Terry of Susanville and Stanley and his wife Jude Terry of San Leandro, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A rosary was held on Thursday, May 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass was held on Friday, May 28 followed by burial at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Marie E. Walker, 87, died on May 22, 2004 at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born on Feb. 24, 1917 in Dordrecht, Holland and was a Lassen County resident for the past 15 y ears, coming from Alturas. She loved bowling and the many friends she made in the sport. She also enjoyed travel, golf, volleyball, square dancing, sewing, rose gardening and was an expert in crocheting. She truly found great love in her great-grandchildren's smiles. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, J.P. Walker and brother, Peter Dalbout. She is survived by her daughter, Christie and her husband Jorn Brodersen of Janesville; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside services was held on Friday, May 28 at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Arthura William Sanders, 83, died on May 24, 2004, at his home. He was born on Aug. 8, 1920, one of 16 children. He was a decorated World War II veteran. He was a grocery store manager for many years in Southern California before moving to South Lake Tahoe in 1963. He was a purchasing agent and director for Harvey's Resort Hotel and Casino until retiring in 1980. He lived in Doyle since 1980. He came out of retirement at the age of 74 to work at the Sierra Army Depot for five years, managing a tool room. During World War II he was a navigator, shot down on his 50th mission and was a prisoner of war for nine months. He was awarded two purple hearts. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Esther Sanders. He is survived by his present wife, Kay Ingram-Sanders; daughters, Nancy Flynn, Janet Berry and Judy Everett; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Doris N. Spalding, 97, died on May 25, 2004, at a rest home in Sacramento.
She was born on March 28, 1907.
Funeral arrangements have not been scheduled at this time.
Elizabeth J. "Liz" Gordon of Cove, Ore., 50, died on May 22, 2004 in Boise, Idaho. She was born on Dec. 14, 1953 in Redding, Calif. Gordon was a 1971 graduate of Lassen High School. She attended Lassen Community College in Susanville and Shasta Community College in Redding. She graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in education. She also graduated from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore., with a masters in teachers education in 2002. She was a teacher and part-time principal. She was going to be a full time principal in the 2004-2005 school year. Her goal was to become a full-time principal and to help children with their education. She has worked for Cove School District for over 10 years. She married Arlie Abraham Gordon May 6, 1972. Her hobbies included riding her motorcycle with her husband, riding her horse, Shabby, reading, traveling, and spending time with her sons. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Abe Gordon of Cove; sons, John and Scott Gordon of Bend, Ore.; father, Lavell Deese of Cottonwood, Calif.; mother, Barbara Deese of Standish; sisters, Sue Deese and Tina Deal. A funeral service was held on May 28 at Cove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund will be set up in her name. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 3, Cove, OR, 97824.
Andy Euguene Smith, 67, died on May 14, 2004 at Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was born in Sigourney, Iowa on July 24, 1936 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 32 years. After his high school graduation, Smith entered the military, enlisting in the U.S. Army. His tours of duty included Germany and Vietnam. He served his country as a munitions disposal expert until his retirement from active duty in 1971. He then moved to Herlong and went to work at the Sierra Army Depot, working at special weapons disposal until his retirement there. He was a life member of both the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Shriners, a 30-year Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Gospel Tabernacle Church. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith of Susanville; brothers, Ron Smith of Tampa, Fla. and Gayno Smith of Iowa; daughter, Sheree Zunino and her husband Michael of Susanville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A closed casket visitation was held at Colonial Mortuary Chapel on Friday, May 21. Services were held at the mortuary on Saturday, May 22. Interment followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
