Donna Jean Irish, 80, died Thursday April 8, 2004 with her daughter and caregivers at her side at her residence on the Peninsula of Lake Almanor. She was born on Dec. 11, 1923 to Eddie and Maude (Davis) Irish in Arcata. She went on to graduate from Humboldt State where she obtained her BA degree in nursing. She married Dr. Edgar M. Allen and became an integral part of his practice in Warden, Wash. where she resided for 20 years. She moved to the Lake Almanor area in 1980 following her marriage to Gerald William Melville Irish. She became active in the Chester Lake Almanor community where she attended the Chester Community United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee and as a volunteer secretary for a number of years. She became active with Sierra Hospice and also served as a longtime volunteer at their Forget-Me-Not Thrift Store along with volunteering at Helping Hands, a food source for the needy located in Chester. She was a longtime member of the National Audubon Society and during her final weeks found great solace in watching the animal and plant life from her deck at her home. She enjoyed all types of crafts and is remembered by many in the community for the beautiful crafts she constructed and donated for sale at the Chester Community United Methodist Church's annual bazaar. She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald William Melville Irish in 1983. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jean Brown of Rochester, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law Ronald Arthur and Patsy (Contreras) Allen of Everett, Wash.; stepson and daughter-in-law Jay and Pamela Irish of Livermore, Calif. and one grandson. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory located in Quincy a celebration of life took place at the Chester Community United Methodist Church on April 14. Private scattering of her remains will take place at a later date. Hubert Stanton, 86, of Reno, died on April 12, 2004 at Washoe Progressive Care Center in Sparks. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elva Stanton; wife, Mary Stanton; son, Robert Stanton and brothers, Jack, Bob and Lyn Stanton. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Smith; brothers, Royce, Curtis and Alvin; sisters, Dorothy and Jewel May and two grandchildren. No services are planned at this time. Walton's Sparks Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Helen Anna Johnston, 87, died April 11, 2004 in Susanville. She was born in Compton, Calif. on Jan. 7, 1917 and was a Lassen County resident for the past year, moving from Long Beach to be with her family. She was of the Protestant faith and attended regularly when her health allowed her to. She was a member of the AARC, loved read her mystery novels and flowers. Her passion was traveling; she was also known as the family pictorian and historian and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her son, Roger. She is survived by sons; Douglas of Susanville, Bruce and Norma of Susanville; daughter Elaine Johnston of Susanville; sister, Ruth Weakley of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one cousin. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004 at Walton's Chapel.
Herman Perez, 75, of Susanville, died on April 5, 2004 in Sparks, Nev. He graduated from Lassen Union High School then worked for Southern Pacific Railroad and the U.S. government in Herlong for 40 years. Being an avid fisherman, he eventually retired to Eagle Lake. He is survived by his wife, Donna Hill Perez; son, James (Cheryl) Perez of Sparks; daughter, Janice (Scott) Whittaker of Hemit, Calif.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in his memory to either the American Cancer Society or the Lassen Alumni Association.
Lester "Al" Crooker, 69, died on April 8, 2004 at Banner Lassen Medical Center after a long illness. He was a Lassen County resident for the past 24 years. He was in the auto body and fender trade for 53 years. He loved bowling, fishing, Wheel of Fortune and being with his family. The last 35 years he had a close and personal relationship with God. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jacqueline; daughters, Sherry Carruth and Lori Hunt; sons, Brian Hauck, Jerry Hauck, Lester Hunt, Daniel Hunt; twin sister Sally Gordon of Washington; brothers, Lawrence of Washington, Luther of Portland, Ore., Merrill of Alabama; Merritt of Portland, Ore. and Martin of Dallas, Ore.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on April 24, 2004 at the Gospel Tabernacle Church to celebrate his life.
Marguerite Ethel "Posie" Edwards, 80, of Reno, Nev. died May 14, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital from complications of emphysema. Posie was born March 12, 1924, in Fresno to Elmer and Sarah Ethel (Hagel) Anderson. She was a descendent of a Swedish pioneer ranching family in Lassen County. In 1941, she graduated from Lassen County High School, and went on to attend the California Academy of Arts and Crafts, Berkeley, and graduated from Arts Center School, Los Angeles in 1947. That same year, she married Revis Edwards in in Reno, Nev. She moved to Reno with her husband in 1954 from Susanville. She spent 25 years as an art director for Gray Reid and Wright Company in Reno. During her lifetime she painted watercolor landscapes depicting Northern Nevada and California. She was preceded in death by her parents. Posie is survived by her husband of 56 years, Revis Edwards of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Sally Edwards of Carson City, Nev.; sister, Iris K. Davie of Susanville; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Private burial will be held in the family plot at Susanville Cemetery. Patricia Lee (Mers) Center, 55, died on Friday, April 30, 2004. She was a resident of Mt. Washington, Ohio and Susanville, Calif. She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Mers and one brother. She is survived by her husband, David; children Jason, and his wife Emily Kelly and Sara and her husband Chris Schmeh; sister, Gail and herhusband Ed Meosky and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 905 Richmond Road in Susanville. Robert Francis Patrick Clark, 80, died on March 31, 2004 at Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was born on Jan. 3, 1924 in Long Beach and was a Lassen County resident for the past 20 years. He lived in Garden Grove prior to moving to Susanville. He loved fishing, hunting, the beach, shooting and the Anaheim Angels. Clark was a decorated World War II veteran as a member of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Clark. He is survived by his wife, Thelma of Susanville; daughter, Roberta Matot of Clackamas, Ore.; stepdaughters Carol Byers of Susanville, Cheri Gushue of Susanville and Patricia Agee of Alexandria, La.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. A memorial service with full military honors was held on April 3 at Skyline Memorial Park.
Martha Joanne Maynarich, 69, died April 30, 2004, with her husband at her side at the Long Term Care Facility of Seneca District Hospital in Chester, following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Martha was born June 3, 1934, in Los Angeles to Roy and Ruby Turnquist Abrams. She spent most of her life in the Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley areas of Southern California. She was a 1950 graduate of Venice High School. Joanne had lived on the peninsula of Lake Almanor as a permanant resident since 1985 and had vacationed in the area for six years prior to that. She had worked in the retail sales field for more than 36 years, last working as a cashier for Holiday Markets. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, and her dogs. Joanne is survived by her husband of 53 years, Frank of Lake Almanor; her sons, David of San Diego and Charles of the San Fernando Valley; her brothers, Richard Abrams of Oregon and Roy Abrams of New Mexico; two stepbrothers; one stepsister; and three grandchildren. George H. "Smitty" Smith, 51, of Galt, Calif. died in Stockton on April 29, 2004 at the age of 51. Smitty was born in San Jose, Calif. on Oct. 30, 1952. He was self-employed as a handyman. He served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father, George Smith; brother, Anthony A Perez and stepbrother, Arnold Silva. He is survived by his son, Cody Weeks of Chico; mother, Joanne Perez of Galt; step-father, Allan J. Silva of Pioneer; siblings, Rene J. Doherty of Sacramento, Lillian M. Base of Elk Grove, Rodney J. Silva of Sacramento, Amanda J. Santistevan of Galt, Lisa L. Carranza of Woodland, Linda Fix of Galt and step-brother, David Silva of Westwood. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Galt with Father Patrick Lee as celebrant. Committal will be at Westwood Cemetery, Highway 36, Westwood. Gino B. Pavan, 83, passed away on April 13, 2004 at Washoe Medical Center. He was born on Oct. 10, 1920 in Westwood and lived all his life in Lassen County. He retired in 1985 from a life-long employment in the lumber industry. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching Monday Night Football. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth J. "Sally" Pavan in 1992. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Luann of Janesville/Empire, Nev.; brother Frank and sister-in-law Mary Pavan of Citrus Heights, Calif.; sisters-in-law Marge Rottman of Quincy, Ill., Catherine White and Lois Cutshall both of Lincoln, Neb.; one grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Following cremation at Mountain View Crematory in Reno, he was inurned at Mountain View Mausoleum next to his wife. At his request, no services were held.
Doris Ethel Versaw-Sorenson, 92, died on April 22, 2004 at Mayer Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills. She was born on Oct. 31, 1911 in Gordon, Neb. and lived in Modoc and Shasta counties since 1982. She loved to knit, sew, crochet, dance and listen to music. She loved her flowers and she would feed all of the birds and sit and watch them for hours. Her true joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy and Ray Adkins of Susanville; brother Raymond and Pat Versaw of Grand Junction; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and one on the way. Services are pending at this time.
Keith L. Sober, 73, died at his home in Red Bluff on Saturday, April 10. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Collins Pine Company in Chester for 30 years. He loved his family and loved to travel. He will be remembered by the many lives he touched. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen of Red Bluff; son, Greg Daniel and his wife, Sherrie of Agoura Hills, Calif.; son Keith Sober of San Jose; daughters, Kayel Denney of Chester and Laurie Shawles and her husband David of Chester; sister Donna White of Big Bear City, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. At his request there will be no services. Bequests in his memory should be made to hospice.
James "Pierce" McClelland, 89, died on April 23, 2004, at Banner Lassen Medical Center in Susanville. He was born on Sept. 28, 1914 in Standish and lived in Lassen County all his life. He had many loves in his life, as a member of the roping club, Elks, volunteer fireman, Sheriff's Posse, Grange member, Farm Bureau, Cattleman's Association (lifetime), director of the PCA for 30 years, but his greatest love was his love for his wife of nearly 65 years, family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda, brother, Bernard and one granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Elburna of Susanville; son, Tom of Eagle Lake/Paynes Creek, Calif.; daughters, Helen and Jim Finks of Litchfield and Nancy Urionaguena of Susanville; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Lassen County Cattleman's Memorial Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.
