Doris Maria Rogers, 87, died Sept. 11, 2002 in Chester. Doris was born Feb. 27, 1915 in  Texas. She was raised in Yukon and Tulsa, Okla. At the age of 17, she moved to Southern California, and worked in the movie industry as an animal handler and a bit actress during the late 1930s and early 1940s. During World War II, she was employed as a driver for Greyhound Bus Lines. She also worked for an upscale restaurant called Tips as a hostess and assistant manager. Doris moved to Chester in 1987 to live her retired years. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Ben; two brothers and four sisters. Doris is survived by her daughter, Sue Keeling of Chester; son, Paul Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitations were held Sept. 13, 2002 at the Chester Church of Christ. Interment followed at the Chester District Cemetery. Carol (Cula Kapitanakis) Wood, 79, of Graeagle died Sept. 9, 2002 at her home. Carol is survived by her husband, Theodore; daughter, Carol Pence of Fallbrook; sisters, Helen Currier of Placerville; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Tahoe Forest Hospice, Box 759, Truckee, CA 96160.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Sandy McKinnon Gray will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Graeagle Community Church on 150 Graeagle Johnsonville Rd in Blairsden. A reception will follow at the home of John Gray.

June Audrey Butcher, 53, died on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center. She was born on Jan. 14, 1939 in Meridian, Conn. She was preceded in death by her son, Kyle. She was survived by her husband, Michael; sons, Corey and Randy; daughters Wenona and Heather and 10 grandchildren. A celebration of her life was held on Monday, Sept. 2 in Herlong. Private cremation and arrangements by Reno Memorial.

Sadie M. Ward, 95, died on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in Ceres,  Calif. She was born on Feb. 9, 1907, in Seymour, Mo. and had been a Lassen County resident for 15 years before moving to Ceres to be with her family. Sadie was a seamstress for many years, which she enjoyed and spent much of her time doing. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and family activities. She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie in 1977. Sadie is survived by her two daughters, Grace Naves of Wellington, Nev. and Anna Sherman of Ceres,  Calif.; sons Charles Ward of Susanville, William Ward of Santa Maria,  Calif. and Richard Ward of Simi Valley,  Calif., 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services were held on Friday, Sept. 13 at Walton's Colonial Mortuary; Graveside services were held on Saturday, Sept. 14. at Diamond Crest Cemetery.

Sophie Lizzie Redger, 94, of Montezuma, Kan., died on Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma. She was born on Feb. 24, 1908, to Jacob B. and Katie Eck, in Coy, Okla. She had resided in Montezuma since 1990. On May 18, 1927, she was married to Adam A. Redger, in Dodge City, Kan. Their first 15 years of marriage they lived on a farm between Greensburg and Coldwater, Kan. In 1943, they moved to a farm in Abilene, Kan. In 1963 they sold the farm and moved into Abilene. She moved from Abilene to Montezuma on April 20, 1990. She was a pie maker at the Abilene Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1978. She attended the Brethren In Christ Church. She was a member of the Brethren In Christ Sewing Circle and taught child evangelism in her home. She attended the Morningside Community Church in Montezuma. She taught Sunday school for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth and Ruth Redger of Liberal, Kan., Ernest Redger of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Charles "Chuck" and Judy Redger of Aurora,  Colo.; daughter, Naomi Base of Susanville; brother, Arthur Eck of Willits,  Calif.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren and 6 stepgreat-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives. Memorials have been established for either the Morningside Community Church or Bethel Inc. Memorials may be mailed to Montezuma Funeral Home, P.O. Box 421, Montezuma, KS 97867. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at Morningside Community Church in Montezuma, with Pastor Lyn Hansen presiding. Graveside services were also held on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Bethel Cemetery in Abilene.

Clarence "Cookie" Chandler, 58, died on Sept. 10, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center. He was born in Susanville on June 10, 1944. Except for serving in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army, Chandler has spent his whole life in Lassen County. Cookie enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, James. He is survived by his best friend, Anita Carson of Susanville; stepson Arnold Carson of Janesville; sisters, Ruth Young of Standish, Norma Brown of Redding, Marie Chandler of Susanville and Mary Doyle of Standish; brothers, Sterling Chandler of Johnstonville, Fred Chandler of Susanville and Phillip Chandler of Standish and six grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Riverside Park.

Katrina B. Chauvin, 45, died on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002. She was born in Fort Worth,  Texas on July 26, 1957 and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past eight years. She is survived by her mother, Pearl Worley of Susanville. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., today, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Gospel Tabernacle Church.

Esther Margaret Blickenstaff, 101, died at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. on Sept. 12, 2002. Esther was born on Dec. 31, 1900. She had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 73 years. She lived on the family ranch in Janesville during that time. She was a Grange member in Janesville, a founding leader of the Lake 4-H and treasurer for the Lassen County Federal Credit Union. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, fishing, playing the piano and being outdoors. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Art; sons, Clarence and Glenn; and one grandson. Esther is survived by her three sons, Robert Blickenstaff of Corning, Donald Blickenstaff of Janesville, and Alvin Blickenstaff of Janesville; thirteen grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers make donations to the American Cancer Society.

Velma Goddard, 93, died Jan. 17, 2003 following a long battle with Alzheimers Disease at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Quincy. Velma was born Sept. 23, 1909 to Kansas natives George and Eva Mae Smith Manlove. She had been a Plumas County resident for the past eight years. She had moved from Modesto where she had lived from 1948-1995. She had been a longtime member of the Electrical Union Auxiliary in Modesto. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed working in stained glass. She had worked as a beautician for 15 years, working last for the George Innes Company. She was preceded in death by her son, Lowell D. "Bud" Lunt, Jr., who was killed in action during the Korean War; great-grandson, Matthew Black; sister, LaVerne Stoops; and her brother, Harold Malvone. Velma is survived by her daughter, Rowena "Jo" Philips of Greenville; sister Laura Pavey of Wichita, Kan.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Following cremation, a private family celebration of her life will take place at the graveside in the Roseville District Cemetery in Roseville at a later date. Casey Dean Kozlowski, 44, died Jan. 13, 2003 at his home in Sparks, Nev. Casey was born in Reno, Nev., April 17, 1958, to Eugene and LaMerne Kozlowski. He graduated from Sparks High School and went on to become a sergeant in the U.S. Army for 15 years, five of which were spent in Germany. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. He was an avid cribbage player and a regular contestant in the World's Championship Cribbage Tournament. Each year at the Quincy tournament his family offered the Kozlowski Award to the highest qualifier in the tournament from Nevada in memory of his father. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene. Casey is survived by his daughter, Chamagne and son, Cole of Dortmund, Germany; mother, LaMerne of Sparks, Nev.; brothers, Mike of Rancho Cordova, Kris of Coos Bay, Ore., and Todd and Scot of Sparks, Nev.
