Thomas "Tom" Peery Gage Jr. died Jan. 14, 2003 at a local hospital. Tom was born April 15, 1920 to Thomas and Minerva Gage, in Marysville. He was raised and educated in the Tudor and Yuba City area. He married Nancy Walton on Nov. 7, 1940, in Yuba City. In 1947, they moved to Gridley. Tom worked as an insurance agent for many years. In 1997, they moved to Chico. Tom spent his summers at Lake Almanor with his wife for more than 30 years. He was a Kings fan, enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tom is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy; daughter, Judy Gage; son, Michael Gage; sister, Betty Gage Bell; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. As per his wishes, no services are planned and inurnment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Thelma Mae Harvath, 79, died March 5, 2003, in Chico. Thelma was born June 23, 1923. She had been a resident of Chester for 51 years. She was a dietary supervisor at Seneca Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Susan James; and her son, Michael James. Thelma is survived by her husband, George Harvath; her daughters, Patricia Cress and Donna Billings; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral and memorial services will be announced. The family requests no flowers.

Raymond Bustamante, 86, died on Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Sunbridge Convalescent Hospital in Susanville. He was born in Brawley,  Calif. On Feb. 2, 1917 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 60 years, moving here from Marysville. He had worked for Red River Lumber Company in Westwood in the power house and also for Collins Pines as a transfer operator for 20 years. He was a member of the Catholic church and attended Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading the newspaper, recreational sports and watching football, but most of all he enjoyed his family and especially his grandchildren. Bustamante is survived by his wife Estella of Westwood; sons, Ray Jr. and Dianna of Walnut Creek,  Calif., John and Debbie of Carmichael,  Calif., David and Julie and Frank and Trisha Timmons and Dianna Bustamante, all of Westwood; daughters, Gloria and Curt Wallace of El Dorado Hills,  Calif. and Mary Lou and Bill Neal of Franklin, Tenn.; brother, Rudy Ruiz of Fresno, 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one niece, Linda Lujan of Indio. Services will be held 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14, at Our Lady of the Snow's Catholic Church in Westwood. A celebration of life will be held at the Parish Hall immediately following the services.

Fay A. Teague, 73, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in Reno. She was born on March 24, 1929 in Cedarville. Teague was a graduate of Cedarville High School. She was married to Donald L. Teague on May 11, 1946 in Reno, Nev. She was employed as a budget analyst for the BLM before retiring in 1989. She loved to fish, hunt and do things with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in 1981. She is survived by her son, Henry Teague; daughter, Kathleen Vanmeter; granddaughters, Bonnie Schwier, Carrie Stout, Sherrie Betts and Becky Krueger and four great-grandchildren. Services were held on Monday, March 10 at Kerr Mortuary. The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Juan Pedro Jaquez, 70, died in Los Angeles at Centinela Medical Center on March 1, 2003. Juan was born in San Jose De Le Boca, Durango, Mexico on Jan. 30, 1933, to Juvenal and Josefa Herrera Jaquez. As a young man, he moved to Illinois for a few years, then to Loyalton. He had been a resident since 1958. Juan was a stacker at the mill in Loyalton for 40 years. He retired in 1986. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Camerina and Adulfo Jaquez; and his son, Juan Pedro Jaquez, Jr. Juan is survived by his wife, Guadalupe "Lupe" Jaquez of Loyalyon; his son, Adulfo Jaquez of Los Angeles; his daughters, Josefina Ramirez, Alicia Vega, Patricia Silvestra and Claudia Aguilar, all of Reno, Nev.; brothers, Jesus, Juvenal, Jose, Alfonso, Victor, Martin and Enrique Jaquez; his sister, Maria De La Paz Rios; and 12 grandchildren. A mass was held March 7, 2003, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with burial at Mountain View Cemetery in Loyalton.

Edward Joseph Hurley, age 87, passed away peacefully at his residence located in Chester, CA on Thursday morning February 27, 2003. Born April 21st, 1915 to Edward and Kathryn Sultaire Hurley in Pittsfield, Mass. he is a 26 year resident of Chester moving here from Upland,  Calif. Ed had retired from the General Electric Corp. Aircraft Engine Branch as a purchasing manager after 42 years of loyal and dedicated service to the company. He gained great pleasure from the natural beauty of the area through skiing, bicycling, hiking and fishing. He also enjoyed the challenge of a good game of golf. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter Judith Ann in 1990 and brother Richard in 1977. He is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years Thelma of Chester, children Mark E. Hurley of Rancho Cucamonga,  Calif., Madeline P. Hurley of Jacksonville, Fla., Edward R. Hurley of Upland; sister Kathryn Franchebois of Pittsfield, Mass.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy at his request no services will take place. Darrel Clark Elliott, 47, of Comer Road,  Washington Township, Waterford, Pa., died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at his home after an illness of several months. He was born on Aug. 18, 1955, in Pensacola, Fla., to Julia  Jackson Elliott Haas of Harrisonburg, Va. And the late Donald Howard Elliott. Since 1994, he was employed as the activities manager at the state correctional institute in Albion,  Calif. Previously he lived in Elmira, N.Y., Janesville, where he was activities director for the Susanville State Prison and Enfield, Conn., where he graduated from Central Connecticut State College and then worked as a physical education teacher. He was a member of McLane Church of McKean, Pa. His interests included many outdoors activities like kayaking, skiing, running, hiking, camping and hunting. He had creative skills and enjoyed artistry and he enjoyed any activity with his wife and kids. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife, Christine A. Shuttis Elliott; sons, Joshua P. Elliott, Alden C. Elliott and Morgan J. Elliott; daughter, Allison M. Elliott; brother, Robert D. Elliott and his wife, Linda of Harrisburg, Va. and two nephews and two cousins. Interment will be in Elmira.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 2115 West 38th St., Erie, PA 16508.

Marie Annette Withers, 78, died on Monday, March 10, 2003 in Reno. She was born on April 13, 1924 in Long Beach,  Calif. She lived in Susanville for the past eight years. She retired from bookkeeping in Sacramento. She enjoyed word-find, books, watching TV and shopping and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Steven C. Withers; daughter, Nancy E. Mingo; granddaughters, Joni Kristy, Charish Lillian and Destiney Peace; grandsons, Colt James and March Joseph, great-granddaughters Houston and Corey. She wished to be cremated and released over the ocean.

Evelyn Eliza (Amator) Bantley, 84, died on Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, in Anderson,  Calif. She was born on Sept. 28, 1918 in Phoenix, Ariz., to Floyd and Cora Amator. She grew up in Durham and raised her family there. A homemaker, she moved to Susanville in 1957 and she was a volunteered for the Salvation Army. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Bantley. She is survived by daughters, Geraldine Becker of Hebo, Ore. and Laura Smith of Anderson and 16 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Redding through Brusie Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.

Richard Cottrell, 73, died at Washoe Medical Center in Reno on March 14, 2003. He was born in Depew, Okla., on Feb. 15, 1930, and had been a resident of Susanville for the past 40 years. He had previously lived in the town of Tranquility. Richard was a Pentecostal pastor for many years, most recently at the Indian Church in Susanville. He enjoyed his family, fishing, gardening, and making wooden picture frames. He especially enjoyed his wife Shirley's cooking. He is survived by his wife Shirley of Susanville; two daughters, Sarah Vincent of Fallon, Nev., and Sandra Klinetobe of Riodel; three sons, Leonard of Coalinga, Walter of Eureka, Norman of Fresno; two brothers, Pete of Clear Lake and Don of San Joaquin; five sisters, June Collins of Fresno, Coralee Shelton of Fortuna, Meryl  Jones of Homedale, Idaho, Edna Drake of Okla., and Onie Null of Fresno; twenty-one grandchildren, and twenty-six great-grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday, March 19, at 2 p.m. at Walton's Colonial Chapel with burial to follow at Diamond Crest Cemetery.

Pamela Rae DeCaires Barclay, 57, died at her home in Portola Tuesday, March 11, 2003. She was born Jan. 24, 1946, in Richmond, to Francis and Helen Louise Birdsell DeCaires. She lived in Portola for the past 12 years, moving from Livermore, where she had resided for 20 years. She was a certified nursing assistant in Pleasanton and Livermore and worked at SunBridge Health Care in Quincy. Pamela enjoyed oil painting landscapes and still lifes, and other home crafts. She was a member of Loyalton Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her son, Todd Barclay of Portola; daughter, Tina Marler of Portola; brothers, Michael DeCaires of Coos Bay, Ore., and Jerry DeCaires of  Oklahoma; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at the Assembly of God Church in Loyalton on Sunday, March 16. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in her name may be made to the church, P.O. Box 475, Loyalton, CA 96118.
