Ronald Edward Saari, 59, of East Quincy died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Enloe Hospital in Chico. Ronald was born to George and Oleta Saari of East Quincy on July 31, 1943. A lifelong resident of Plumas County who worked in the lumber, construction and ranching industries, he enjoyed all facets of life in this area and was a wealth of information on the history of the region. He especially loved gardening, husbandry, trapping and his granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, George E. Saari and Oleta F. Saari and his wife, Prudence (Betsy) Saari. He is survived by his daughter, Oleta Saari of Quincy; one granddaughter; brother George Saari of Quincy; sisters Delores Parsons of Quincy, Gloria Wilken of Quincy, Doris Saari of Upper Lake and Jane Walters of Quincy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, March 22, at noon in the East Quincy Cemetery, followed by a gathering of friends and loved ones at the Saari residence at 193 S. Curtis Edward Nichols, 62, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation following a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 11, 1940, to Ernest and Irene Roseberry Nichols in Clinton, Mass., he spent most of his life residing in that area. Curtis is a graduate of Clinton High School and worked as a self-employed painting contractor. He had been a resident of Plumas County for the past 10 years, residing in Delleker from 1992 to September of 1999, when he moved to his current residence outside of Quincy. Curtis was an accomplished woodworker who loved constructing toys for his family and grandchildren. He had been a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was the youngest of seven children and is preceded in death by both of his parents. Curtis gained great pleasure in spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all. Curtis is survived by his wife, Kathleen, whom he married Sept. 4, 1999; son Joseph Edward Pearce of Cold Springs, Nev.; daughters Helena Reddecop of Graeagle, Christine Walker of Clearfield, Utah; Darlene Ramirez of Loyalton; and nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Following cremation a private family celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Richard John "Dick" Strecker, 74, died Saturday evening, April 6, 2002, at Indian Valley District Hospital in Greenville. Born Dec. 25, 1927, in Anoka, Minn., he had been a Greenville resident for the past 58 years, moving there from Wyoming, Minn. A professional truck driver for close to 50 years, he owned and operated R. J. Strecker Trucking for 27 years, retiring in 1992. He was known for his impeccable maintenance of his big rigs. Strecker was a former member of the Greenville Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and he enjoyed the serenity of the outdoors through his time driving truck, hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Nancy, of Greenville; daughters, Debra Cassol and Ruth Strecker, of Greenville; brother, Anthony Strecker, of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Vick Langberg of Aiken, Minn., Eva Hamilton of Land of the Lakes, Fla., Aggie Lundborg and Audrey Walters of Forest Lake, Minn., and Helen Brisson of Saulkcentre, Minn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of Strecker's life was held in the Greenville District Cemetery

Martin Wesley "Bud" Hedrick, 78, of Grass Valley, died April 4, 2002. He was born Nov. 27, 1923 at his parents' home just north of Quincy on the Hedrick Place, known as "Indian Hill." His parents were Mike and Gladys Hedrick, Sr. Martin was the fifth child out of 11 brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving brother. He went to Quincy Elementary School and Quincy High School. When World War II started, Hedrick was the very first high school student to enlist in the Army. He fought in the Middle Eastern campaigns, becoming a sergeant and tank driver. He earned the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Campaign Medal. While in the service, he was captured by the Germans and managed to escape the internment camp a week later. He received a commendation for this act of bravery. He came home from the war and settled into the logging industry, where he remained until retirement. He married Frieda Worth of Taylorsville, and they had three children. They lived in the Quincy area, but moved to Grass Valley in the early 1950s. Hedrick was heavily involved with logging show competitions, traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest, and even going back to Wisconsin to the world championships. He was seven-time all-round Pacific Coast champion and world champion all round logger. He remained active in competition until his health started to interfere. Martin Wesley, Jr., Hedrick's son, preceded him in death in 1976 in a logging accident. Survivors include his wife Frieda of Grass Valley; daughters, Lillian Hughes, Roselene McGary and Martina Harrison; sisters, Doris Winkler of Willows, SueCarroll Gibson of Oroville, and Shirley Ann Martinez of Quincy; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at Stivers Indian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Hedrick's memory be made to Stivers Indian Cemetery

There will be a memorial service in memory of Kenn Hohlfeldt April 30 at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 161 Aspen (across the street from the Chester Elementary School). After the service, there will be a celebration of life reception at the Elks Lodge on Main Street in Chester. Everyone who knew Kenn will be able to say "Good-bye, but not forgotten."
Nancy Deane Stephenson, 64, died March 25, 2002, at her home in Davis. She was born June 13, 1937, in Lakeland, Fla. Stephenson moved to Quincy when she was 13 years old and attended Quincy High School, where she dazzled all with her beauty, her smile and her southern accent. She soon became a cheerleader, and Sweetheart of the Mountains. She married Robert Stephenson of Taylorsville, in 1954. After having two sons, Stephenson was a runner-up in the Miss Cover Girl contest that ran on national TV. The family moved to the Sacramento area in the early '70s, and then to Davis in the late '80s, where she remained until her death. Stephenson was preceded in death by three children, Steve, Joe and Benji. Survivors include her husband Bobby; sons, Kenneth "Bo" Stephenson of Simi Valley; Charley and Aaron Stephenson, both of Davis; sisters, Pat Conroy and Cindy Blust of Sacramento, Annette Hampton of Reno, Nev.; brother Ken Parks of Sacramento; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She will be buried in Greenville with her sons.
Carol E. Heckers, 67, died April 17, 2002. She was born March 29, 1935, in RenoSparks, Nev. She had previously lived in Portola for 36 years, and graduated from Portola High School. More recently, she had been a Citrus Heights resident for 31 years. Heckers worked at Crocker Bank and two local printing companies. After retiring, she enjoyed gardening, attending the Sacramento Opera and caring for her beloved Italian Greyhound, Twiggy. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucille Weddell, and her brother John, Jr. Survivors include her husband, Charles Heckers of Citrus Heights; daughters, Tracy Herson of Roseville and Lesley Cox of Dorrington; sister Edie Hein of Portola; brother Steve Weddell of Orangevale; and three grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 20, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Antelope. Carl Lewis Atkinson, 64, died Saturday morning, April 20, 2002, at Indian Valley Hospital in Greenville. He was born Feb. 12, 1938, in Merced. In 1970, he moved to Greenville from Hayward, where he had lived for 15 years. Atkinson enjoyed watching football and was an avid Oakland Raiders fan. He was a talented craftsman, who will be remembered for his beautiful macrame and woodworking. Survivors include his children, Carl "Dusty" Atkinson Jr., Derick Atkinson, Theresa Atkinson and Yolanda Jansen, all of Rapid City, South Dakota; brother Dale Atkinson of Oroville; sister Marilyn Butcher of Greenville; and nine grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of Atkinson's life was held Tuesday, April 23, at the Greenville Senior Housing Complex in Greenville. Private disposition of his remains will take place at a later date. Daniel Robert Gardner, 80, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at his residence in Milford, Calif. He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb. 1, 1922. He moved here in 1968 to build his home in Milford, moving from Los Angeles. Gardner had been part of a traveling bowling league for years. He also was a member of the NRA, but his passion was woodworking by building his own home. He enjoyed airplanes, flying, fishing, wildlife and steam engine trains. He served the U.S. Army Air Corp for three years, retired from the Los Angles Police Department after 20 years of service from 1948 to 1968 and then retired from California Correctional Center after 10 years of service from 1968 to 1978. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Dorene; daughter, Sheryl Lynn Gardner of Laguna Beach, Calif.; three step-daughters, Jimmie Sue Bowman and Jerry Lynn Givens of Susanville and Candy Fizer of Janesville; step-son Abe Gordon of Cove, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. The family is having a pot-luck celebration of life at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 27, at 714-910 Thunder Mountain Road, in Milford, two miles past the rest area. Follow the red white and blue balloons.
Blanche Marie Maurino, 75, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at Enloe Hospital in Chico, Calif. In her early years, she was a banker for United California Bank, and was a bookkeeper for her husband's business, Frank Maurino Painting. Longtime resident of Susanville, married for 55 years to husband, Frank, who recently passed away Dec. 2001. She is survived by brother, Jerry Workman of Lodi; five children Paula Biebel of Fair Oaks, Ted Maurino of San Lorenzo, Ed Maurino of Susanville, Jill Hilton of Chico, and Molly Maurino of Orangevale; 10 grandchildren and one great-grand child. Services are tentatively set for Friday, April 19.
