Nancy L. Arnold, 69, of Reno, Nev., died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Life Care Center in Reno. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her hobbies included Pinochle, traveling and visiting friends and family. She was an avid game player and especially loved Bingo. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Louis "Dutch" Sonnenberg; husband, Jack Arnold; and daughter, Ellen Cunningham. Survivors include her mother, Ruth Sonnenberg; brothers, Mike and Larry Sonnenberg of Washington; sons, Mike and Steve Richard of Greenville; daughters, Brenda Maldanado of Jacksonville, Fla., Juliann Richard of Greenville, Jerri Thompson of Reno, Nev.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hattie Geneva Edith McClellan, 86, died Thursday evening, April 25, 2002, at Redding Medical Center in Redding. She was born in Alta Vista, Iowa, on June 8, 1915. She had been a resident of Greenville since 1961, moving there from Pleasant Valley, Minn. McClellan had been employed as a cook at the Pleasant Valley School in Minnesota, Greenville School Cafeteria, Indian Valley Hospital and Forest Lodge of Greenville. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Ladies Aide, both in Minnesota and Greenville; the Minnesota Farmers Union, AARP and the Mt. Jura Gem and Mineral Society. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, quilting and playing games of all kinds, especially cards. She greatly enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was notorious for baking a special cake for everyone's birthday. She never forgot a special day or special moment. She was preceded in death by her children, Arnold in 1936, Alvin in 1963, Edith Green in 1982, Erma Humphrey in 1984, four brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Philip of Greenville; sons, Gary of Alturas, Bill of West, Texas, Bob of Quincy, Durane of Oakland; daughters, Barbara Quam of Crescent Mills, Evelyn Clark of Greenville, Beverly Poulton of Salinas; sisters, Rose, Lena, Clara and Ida; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life was held Sunday, April 28, at the First Lutheran Church in Greenville, followed by burial in the Greenville Cemetery. Emily Jane Rice Brown, 94, of Portola, died April 26, 2002, at Eastern Plumas District Hospital Long Term Care, where she had been a resident since 1991. She was born May 13, 1907, in Albany, Mo., to Thomas J. and Barbara Alice Reece Rice. She moved to Portola from Whitefish, Mont. She was a homemaker and a cook at Eastern Plumas District Hospital for 20 years. Brown was a 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Portola Chapter No. 321. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Joseph, in 1961; daughter, Geraldine Brown Pearson in 1989; one brother; and three sisters. Survivors include her son-in-law Thomas E. Pearson of Redding; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A graveside funeral service was held Monday, April 29, at Shady Grove Cemetery
in Portola.
Edith Bariani McGraw, 93, died July 11, 2003, at Plumas District Hospital. Edith was born to Anthony and Mary Luchlli Bariani on Aug. 11, 1909, in Napa. She was a summer resident of Cromberg from 1953 until 1971, at which time she and her late husband moved to the area permanently. She had resided in Berkley from 1951-1971. She was a longtime member of St. John's Catholic Church in Quincy. Edith enjoyed working in her garden, crocheting, fishing and competing in the senior bowling league. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; and her great-grandson, Charlie. Edith is survived by her daughter, Donna Beck of Cromberg; her brother, Emory Turchet of Roseville; her sisters, Antionette "Doan" Scarrott of Vallejo, Mary Sanders and Alba Freskan, both of American Canyon; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Catholic graveside Blessing services will take place at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 17, 2003, in the Cromberg District Cemetery. Arthur Lloyd Yandell "Art," 89, died July 7, 2003, at his home where he had been cared for by his daughter and grandchildren. Art was born to James Daniel and Mamie Hale Yandell on June 12, 1914, in Benington, Okla. He had been a resident of Portola for the past four years. Prior to moving there, he had lived in Manteca for 50 years. Art was a millwright with Union Local No. 102 of Oakland. He worked on construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge, Dunbar Tunnel and power plants along Highway 70 in Yuba and Plumas County. He volunteered his evenings for more than 10 years at Modesto Junior College and Sacramento City College, where he taught welding. He was a self-taught welder/burner and received state certification. While living in Manteca, he belonged to "Valley Rangers," a horse club. In 1988, at the age of 76, he won the state championship for "calf pinning." He was known as Bud with his horse, Buddy. He was also a card player with the nickname "Slick." To his family, he was called "Old Grandpa." He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice, in April 2003. Art is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Kelly Griffith of Portola; his son, Tommy Yandell of Portola; his son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Connie Yandell of Placerville; his sons, Danny Yandell and Leonard Rieb, both of Manteca; his grandchildren, Tammy Milby and her husband Gary of Portola, Sherry Prosser, Lenny Rieb and his wife Teres and Michael Rieb, all of Manteca, Shaun Yandell of Davis, Ricky Yandell of Ceres and Peggy Kelly of Barstow; his great-grandchildren, Heather and Taylor Prosser, Ricky and Robbie Milby, Jaycee Rieb, Michelle and Landon Yandell and Holly Kelly; and his sister, Lady Chase of Chowchilla. Visitation was held on July 10, 2003, with graveyard services in Whispering Pines Cemetery
in Portola.
Arthur Edmonds, 83, died at Eastern Plumas District Hospital in Portola on July 6, 2003. Arthur was born on April 14, 1920, in Chester, England to Sidney and Ada Elizabeth Richardson Edmonds. He was an engineer on technical staff at Hughes Aircraft and Leer Company where he was an electrical designer. He was a graduate of University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. He was a Ham radio operator with the handle "Races," a member of the Portola Friends of the Library and the International Order of Foresters. He was preceded in death by one brother. Art is survived by his wife, Helen, of Portola. No services will be held. Inurnment is private.
Carol Wellington "C.W." Bellamy, 99, died June 26, 2003, at Steele Memorial Hospital in Salmon, Idaho, just shy of his 100th birthday. C.W. was born Nov. 4, 1903, to Charles W. Bellamy and Jullietta "Etta" Martindale Bellamy in Manhattan, Kan. He was the youngest of nine children and was raised on farms in Salina and Taber Valley, Kan. He later moved west to Quincy in 1921 where along with his parents, he settled on a small ranch near Keddie. In 1928, he brought his new wife from Richmond, Ill., and started a family. C.W. was a builder, carpenter and contractor, building lumber mills, schools and houses. During the 1960s he co-owned and operated the Bellamy Sand and Gravel Corporation and developed the Bellamy Tract subdivision west of Quincy. In 1974, C.W. relocated to Gooding, Idaho with his wife in order to be closer to their family. They actively farmed there until 1979, and lived in their home until their mid-90s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice; his son, Richard "Dick" Carrol; and his parents, four brothers and four sisters. C.W. is survived by his son, Don Edward Bellamy of Gooding, Idaho; his grandsons, Kerry M. Bellamy of Quincy, Don Bellamy of Salmon, Idaho, Wayne Bellamy of Gooding, Idaho; and five great-grandchildren. Graveside services are pending. Interment will be in the Old Quincy Cemetery
in Quincy.
Marilyn K. Blair, 60, of Quincy, died July 10, 2003, at her home following an extended illness. Marilyn was born June 28, 1943, in Eureka, Kan. She attended schools in Kaicer, Ore. She lived in Salem, Ore., for a number of years prior to moving to Oroville where she worked as a bartender and musician. For the past two years, she had lived in Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray Blair and Glenna Patton; her sister, Judith Ann Epperson; and her two brothers, Harry Steven Blair and Eric Richard Blair. Marilyn is survived by her son, Frankie Ray Fontana of Portland, Ore.; her brother, Johnny Paul Patton of Kansas City, Kan.; her sisters, Barbara J. Miller and Pearl Raye Jones of Quincy, Linda Carol Driggers of Concord, Donna Sue Azevedo of Tenant and Tonya Hudson of Pittsburg. Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Quincy at 2 p.m., on Saturday, July 19, 2003, with Rev. George Tarleton officiating.
Earl Marshall "Marsh" Butner, 61, of New Meadows, Idaho, died on Thursday, July 3, 2003, at McCall Memorial Hospital. Butner was born on Oct. 5, 1941, to Earl and Ruth Butner in Susanville. He graduated from Lassen High School in 1959. Butner attended Idaho State University and received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1965. Later that year he married his first wife, Susan Downey and was inducted into the Army. Butner had a tour of duty in Vietnam. After his discharge in 1967, he began his teaching career. He taught biology in Pocatello and Buhl, Idaho and worked as a counselor at Buhl High School. He and his wife became the proud parents of two daughters, Julie and Jennifer, during this time. The family moved to Boise in 1972, where he worked for vocational rehabilitation until 1975. At that time he went to work for the Bureau of Disaster Services and continued with them until 1977. During that time he assisted with the Teton Dam disaster of northern Idaho. In 1977 he embarked on a career as a pharmaceutical representative with Hoffman-LaRoche. Until his retirement in 1988. On Nov. 25, 1988 Marshall married Janice Burkholder and became the proud stepfather to Gale, Joyce and Paul and instant grandfather. He started on a journey of running races. His wife had him running marathons in Minnesota, foot races in the Swiss Alps and, of course, the toughest half marathon in the west, "The Race of Robie Creek." He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Edna Ann Reynolds. He is survived by his wife, Janice of New Meadows, Idaho; children, Julie Sider and husband Art of Erie, Penn., Jennifer Butner of Boise Idaho, Paul Burkholder and wife Irene of Winnemucca, Nev., Gale Phillips and husband Tom of Laurenceville, Ga. and Joyce Danehower of Chantilly, Va.; grandchildren, Kayley Sider, Daniel Kirk, Stephanie and husband, Steve Makulinski, Jennifer and Daniel Phillips and Joshua, Joseph, Jamie and Jesse Danehower; sister and brother-in-law, Bill and Janelle Wemple of Susanville and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Gene and Myrna Gender of Rogers, Ark., along with several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncle and cousins. Funeral services were held at McCall Baptist Church in McCall, Idaho on Monday, July 7. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the McCall Memorial Hospital Foundation in Earl Marshall Butner's memory.
William Roy Wehagen, 76, died on July 8, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Oct. 6, 1926 and was a Lassen County Resident for the past 12 years, relocating from Lincoln, Calif. to be with his family. At the time of his death he was surrounded by his family, whom he loved very much and spent all of his time with. He loved NASCAR and watched many races with his family. He also liked to watch baseball. He was a veteran of World War II and served proudly in the U.S. Navy. He is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Katherine Mae Wehagen. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Olivia and Mark Lawson of Susanville; brothers, Robert and Victor of Ohio; sister, Edna Beharry of Chardon, Ohio and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hazel Margarette Hamzy, 81, died on Monday, June 30, 2003, at her home in Chico, Calif., following a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on Jan. 13, 1922, in Okemah, Okla. to James Carl and Margarette LeDou. Her family came to Susanville in 1928. Her father died in an accident at the Fruit Growers Co. in Feb. 1930. His widow and four children remained in the vicinity. Three years later, her mother married Thurman L. Boggs and this union added a daughter, Lucille, to the family. Through the years Hazel entertained her family with stories of these sibling's escapades of growing up in Susanville. They were a common sight at the old Storey Club skating rink before its destruction by fire. This family has many wonderful memories tied to the past years in Susanville. In February, of 1940 she married Alonzo "Swede" Andersen. The couple worked at Mare Island in Vallejo. Swede was drafted into the Army and was killed in action during World War II, leaving behind his wife and daughter, Vivian. Hazel continued working at Mare Island until her retirement. After the war, she met and married Herman Hamzy in December of 1946. The couple had a son, Richard. Herman died in December, 1990. Hazel was a family oriented person, she was happiest when she was with loved ones. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing card games. Her lifetime chum was her sister, Millie, who preceded her in death in 2002. Hamzy had a great sense of humor and was known for her ability to be outspoken. She was a lady and dearly loved by her familiy, who will cherish her memory forever. Sometime in her younger life she was baptized in the Baptist church. She was a social person and was active in different social functions through the years. She had the knack of acquiring friends wherever she was. During her life, she lived in different communities of California and southern Oregon, finally settling in Chico in 1974. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Ramsey and Lucille Harger; brothers, Thad and Barney LeDou. Her death brings to a close a generation of this family's history. She is survived by her daughter, Vivian Andersen Wilson and her husband Phil of Clear Creek; son, Richard "Rick" Hamzy of Napa; brother-in-law Al Ramsey of Rogue River, Ore. and sister-in-law, Marva LeDou of Susanville. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at the Susanville Cemetery
on Saturday, July 12, where her cremated remains were buried at the feet of her mother's grave. Pastor John Rolfe of the Janesville Baptist Church officiated. If anyone so desires, a donation to the cancer society or the Lassen High School Alumni Association may be made in her memory.
Delia "Dee" I. Nuckolls, 92, died on July 10, 2003 in Reno. She was born on April 8, 1911, in Beckwourth, Calif. She was a resident of Susanville for over 60 years, recently moving to Reno to live with her son and family. She was a homemaker and also worked as a dental assistant until her retirement. She was a member of the Susanville Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Susanville Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by her son, James Carl Nuckolls; grandchildren, Jesse, Corey and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Melanie and Trenton of Minden, Nev.; numerous nieces and nephews and her sister, Jennie Mitchell of Portola, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 1963; brothers, Charlie and Louie Maddalena and sister, Irene Myers. At her request, no funeral services will be held. Interment will be at Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Susanville on Tuesday, July 15, 2003. There will be a small graveside tribute for family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity in her name.
Helen Ann Grace, 85, died Saturday morning, April 27, 2002, at Indian Valley District Hospital in Greenville. She was born Feb. 13, 1917, in St. Paul, Minn., and moved to Greenville in 1948. She served as the site manager and cook for the Greenville Seniors, retiring after 14 years. She had also worked for Eve's Restaurant in Greenville for a number of years. Grace was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church of Greenville. She was an accomplished seamstress and member of the Greenville Sewing Group. She is also remembered for the great meals she served and the lovely cakes she baked and decorated for special occasions in the community. She enjoyed fishing and watching baseball. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Frank "Boyd" Grace in 1995; one brother and one sister. She is survived by her son, Richard "Dick" Grace of Greenville; brother, LeRoy Kreiner of St. Paul, Minn.; sister, Marlene Bueler of Sandstone, Minn.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will take place at the graveside in the Greenville District Cemetery
