Mary Ellen Martin Petersen died at the age of 72 on July 21, 2008, in Pacifica, of Huntington’s Disease.
Petersen was born in Suisun, on September 27, 1935, to the late Miguel and Mamie Martin. She graduated from Winters High School in 1953, attended Healds Business School in Sacramento, and was employed by UC Davis. She moved to Modesto and married Phil Petersen on October 17, 1959. Phil preceeded her in death on April 12, 2007.
She is survived by her son, Darin Petersen, his wife, Maria, and their children, Angel, Anthony, Alyssa and Alana of South San Francisco, and Marina Petersen of Modesto. Petersen is also survived by her sister, Geraldine Martin of Aptos.
Memorial services will be held at Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 205 Russell Street, on Friday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m.

Longtime Vacaville resident Norman G. Dalgaard passed away at his home on July 19. He was born on Aug. 22, 1914, in San Francisco, to Danish parents, Mads and Marie Dalgaard. When he was three months old, his parents bought land near Winters and built a farm, where he and his sister Ruth grew up
Dalgaard graduated from Winters High School in 1931 and served during World War II in the Army Air Corps.
In 1942, he married Margaret Dettling of Dixon, and they had two children, Dale and Sherill. After Margaret’s death in 1967, Dalgaard married Anna (Reichmuth) Brundrett, who had been recently widowed.
He retired from Valley Livestock Transportation of Dixon after 27 years of employment. He was grand past president and a member for 77 and a half years of the Danish Lodge Dania, Hejmdal No. 4, Sacramento. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, Yolo No. 195, for 59 years.
Dalgaard is survived by his wife, Anna; son, Dale (and Mary Ellen) Dalgaard; and daughter, Sherrill (and Rick) Cox. Additional surviving family members are Anna’s daughter, Jackie (and Pete) Zugar; (like a daughter) Mette (and Hugo) Cornejo; grandchildren, Justin (and Brooke) Dalgaard, Maren Dalgaard, and Anna Marie Zugar; and great-grandchildren, Brody Dalgaard and LeAnna Zuger.
A memorial service will be held at the Masonic Lodge in Davis, 1655 Da Vinci Court, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 22. Dalgaard would have been 94 years old on this day.

Lavinia Mae Niemann Young, 92, lifelong Winters resident, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Stollwood Convalescent Hospital in Woodland. She was born in Winters on July 31, 1915 in the family home on Baker Street, the youngest of the eight children of Lulu Mae Drever Niemann and Robert Ludoff Niemann.
In 1917, the couple moved their growing family to the house on Niemann Road where Lavinia lived until her marriage. She received her education in the local schools, attending Winters Elementary School and the Winters Joint Union High School. At age 11, Lavinia and her sister Evelyn were baptized by Rev. H H. Wilson in the Winters Christian Church. In high school, Lavinia was president of her sophomore class, was a cheerleader, and a Dixon May Day attendant.
She attended Sacramento Junior College and then graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in June of 1937 from the College of Letters and Science, majoring in history and minoring in English.
She met her husband, Robert Arthur Young, in elementary school and they were married on Oct. 23, 1937 in the Niemann home. After their marriage Bob and Lavinia moved to the historic Young home where five generations of Youngs have now lived. At this 202 Russell address, their four children, Diane, Robert, Joseph and William were raised.
Described by relatives as “a career Mom,” Lavinia was a dedicated community volunteer worker. She worked on the Community Center building fund and served on the Winters Historical Landmark Advisory Committee in the 1970s. Her picture and short bio hangs in the entry way of the Winters Opera House along with the many other Winters’ community volunteers. She enjoyed her bridge group of 70 years, meeting monthly. In the later years, they gave up the fancy lunches and playing bridge, choosing to visit and catch up with the news.
Following Bob’s death in 1993, Lavinia remained in the family home until December 2007. She moved into Palm Gardens assisted care facility in Woodland in December then to Stollwood in May. Her extended family made her later life at 202 Russell Street possible, say family members, and the family’s goal and her goal was to live in the home she lived in for 70 years as long as possible.
Survivors say family was most important for Lavinia, and she looked forward to their visits and traveling to visit them in Virginia, Arizona, and Hawaii. Lavinia was devoted and very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, loving each member unconditionally. She will be remembered for her humor, encouragement and thoughtful ways.
She was active in the Christian Church when her children were growing up, involved in the PTA, serving as president, Cub Scout den mother and supporting all of her children in their many activities, never missing a sporting event. She was also involved in the community, co-chairing the Winters Centennial committee in 1975 and the Bi-Centennial in 1976.
She is survived by her children, Diane and Alex Balberde of Fairfax, VA; Robert and Elizabeth of Davis; Joseph and Dorothy of Tempe, AZ; William and Nancy of Stockton. Grandchildren Steve and Eileen Balberde of Clifton, VA, Mike Balberde of Fairfax, VA, Jeff and Leigh Balberde of Cumming, GA, Matt and Heather Balberde of Cartersville, GA, Denise and Jonathan Laycock of Portland, OR, Diane and Dean Thomas of Moraga, Lori and Jay Payne of Gilbert, AZ, Lisa and Mike Angstead of Gilbert, AZ, Ryan Young of Carlsbad, Erin Young of Stockton and John Young of Santa Cruz. Step grandchildren Charlie and Marilee Ingalls of Santa Clara, Alyssa and Dwayne Fletcher of Cedar Rapids, IA. Great grandchildren Will and Andy Balberde, Ansley Balberde, Allie and Elizabeth Balberde, Dylan and Jessica Thomas, Peter Laycock, Brandon, Holden, Carter and Hannah Payne, Joe and Tom Angstead, Lee Fletcher and MacKayla Ingalls. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; father, Robert L. Niemann; mother, Lulu Mae Niemann; brothers, Charles, Leland, Carmen, Craig; sisters, Gertrude Hurd, Eunice Herold, and Evelyn Meyer.
A public celebration of her life will be held on her birthday, Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Pioneer Presbyterian Church. Her charity of choice is the Yolo County Hospice.
Lavinia Niemann Young, a lifelong Winters resident, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2008. She was 92. She was born in Winters on July 31, 1915 to Robert L and Lulu Mae Niemann. She attended Winters Elementary and High Schools and graduated from UC Berkeley.
She met her beloved husband, Robert Arthur Young in elementary school and they were married in 1937. They raised their four children in Winters. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her children Diane Balberde of Fairfax, Virginia, Robert Arthur Young of Davis, Joe Young of Tempe, Arizona, and Bill Young of Stockton; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert. A public celebration of life memorial service will be held on her birthday, July 31, 2008. A more complete obituary will be published near the time of the service.
Thomas Raymond Stone, 80, passed away quietly at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento on May 3, 2008. He was born in Oswego, New York on Jan. 13, 1928, and resided in Oswego until leaving to serve in the United State Coast Guard. Upon his return from the Coast Guard, he spent most of the next decade working for his father at the family-owned Stone’s Candy Shop.
He married the former Karolyn Gurney, and they were joined in what seemed like no time at all by four children. On Nov. 1, 1965, they packed everything into the largest and most unwieldy haywagon-type U-Haul trailer ever built, loaded the kids into the station wagon in front, and moved to California via the southern states route. After a brief stop in Roseville, they settled in Carmichael in 1967.
Mr. Stone worked for many years for, and retired from, Pacific Bell. He was a dedicated and active member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, and enjoyed watching baseball, football, and westerns on TV.
He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Carol McMasters-Stone, of Winters; daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Curt Schhoonover of North Highlands; son, Bill Stone, of Carmichael; and daughter Marty Fetterley, of Carmichael; seven grandchildren, Heather Baldasano, Zach Fetterley, Chris Schoonover, and Tommy, Matt, Meghan and Dillon Stone; step-granddaughter Erin.

Joe M. Martinez, 69, passed away in Dixon on Jan. 9, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born in Winters to Antonio and Nieves Martinez, and was the youngest of four children. After graduating from Winters High School in 1958, he began working at Basic Vegetable Products in Vacaville, and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959. Following basic training at Fort Ord, he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington.
With an honorable discharge, he returned to work at Basic, and remained there for 28 years. During that time, he also worked part-time at the Vaca Bowl in Vacaville for 16 years, then worked for 11 years as a head custodian at Will C. Wood High School in Vacaville. He is described by relatives as a kind and gentle man.
He is survived by his brother Tony and wife Delores of Durham, sister Frances Ramos and husband John of Winters, and brother Frank and wife Dorothy of Woodland; many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A service celebrating his life is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sonrise Community Fellowship, 620 Orange Drive in Vacaville. A reception will follow. Friends and acquaintances are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice at Kaiser Permanente, 975, Sereno Drive, Vallejo, CA 94590, or to a charity of choice.
According to his wishes, his ashes will be laid to rest at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery
in Dixon. Burial will be private.
Shirley Ilene Palmer, born Aug. 15, 1941, passed away on Jan. 17, 2009.
She was born and raised in San Francisco, and attended St. Peters Academy and Balboa High School. She was a dancer for seven years, specializing in tap, ballet and majorettes. She participated in many parades down Market Street and talent shows for the elderly during the holidays.
When she was 14, she met Troy Palmer, a young Navy man, and fell in love. They were married March 22, 1958. Their two daughters followed the next two years. Most years were spent in California, with making their home in Wyoming, Colorado and Missouri at times.
She enjoyed being a homemaker, raising her girls. She also enjoyed volunteering for Girl Scouts, March of Dimes, PTA, talent shows and other school functions.
While living in Vacaville, Mrs. Palmer worked for Windsor Convalescent Home as Housekeeping Supervisor. Upon moving to Winters, she became employed with the Winters School District, serving Waggoner, John Clayton and Wolfskill schools. She took great pride in her work and made many friends there. She then worked for Sutter Memorial Hospital in Davis for five years, until she was forced to retire due to medical reasons.
Mrs. Palmer continued to enjoy gardening, garage sales, baking for the holidays, crossword puzzles and her favorite soap opera, “Days of Our Lives.” According to her family, her greatest pride and joy were Dusty and Missy, her grandchildren. After 50 years of marriage, the love of her life was still her cowboy, her husband Troy. She will be missed by her family and always in their hearts.
She is survived by her husband, Troy Chalmer Palmer; daughters, Debbie Palmer of Winters, Teresa Madsen (Perry) of Missouri; grandson, Dustin Troy Madsen of Missouri; granddaughter, Melissa Kae Arnett of Winters; sisters Ann Cantrell of Vacaville, Linda McAteer of Idaho, Gail Drake of Williams, Bonnie Rodriguez of Cordelia, Betty Miller of South San Francisco and Peggy McAteer of San Bruno; father, Herbert James McAteer of San Bruno; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Mary McAteer, and sister, Patricia McAteer.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. at Wiscombe’s Funeral Chapel, 116 D Street in Davis. Contributions may be made in her name to the Sutter VNA and Hospice Foundation, 2800 L Street, Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95816.
