Bert J. Armstrong, 69, died Tuesday morning, April 23, 2002, at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy. Born Sept. 26, 1932, in Rexburg, Idaho, he served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He and his late wife Doris lived on their boat at Marina Del Rey for 10 years prior to his retirement in 1988, at which time they moved to St. George, Utah. In 1997, they moved to Twain to live with their daughter and son-in-law. A longtime member of the Centinela Power Squadron of Marina Del Rey, Armstrong served as commander from 1981-1982. He was a staunch proponent of responsible environmental and wildlife management and served as president of the Utah Wildlife Federation while living in St. George. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and the serenity of the outdoors, especially the Feather River Canyon. Armstrong was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Doris, in 2000. Survivors include his sons, Rick of Granada Hills and Randy of Gresham, Ore.; daughters, Debby Montgomery of Chugrack, Alaska, Judy Schwabe of Portland, Ore., and Cathy Wheeler of Twain; brother, Dee Armstrong of Iona, Idaho; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of his life will be held at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Quincy. Private interment will take place at a later date. Darrel Clark Elliott, 47, of Comer Road, Washington Township, Waterford, Pa., died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at his home after an illness of several months. He was born on Aug. 18, 1955, in Pensacola, Fla., to Julia Jackson Elliott Haas of Harrisonburg, Va. And the late Donald Howard Elliott. Since 1994, he was employed as the activities manager at the state correctional institute in Albion, Calif. Previously he lived in Elmira, N.Y., Janesville, where he was activities director for the Susanville State Prison and Enfield, Conn., where he graduated from Central Connecticut State College and then worked as a physical education teacher. He was a member of McLane Church of McKean, Pa. His interests included many outdoors activities like kayaking, skiing, running, hiking, camping and hunting. He had creative skills and enjoyed artistry and he enjoyed any activity with his wife and kids. He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife, Christine A. Shuttis Elliott; sons, Joshua P. Elliott, Alden C. Elliott and Morgan J. Elliott; daughter, Allison M. Elliott; brother, Robert D. Elliott and his wife, Linda of Harrisburg, Va. and two nephews and two cousins. Interment will be in Elmira.

Thomas Oscar Brewer, 75, died with his family at his side Sunday morning March 30, 2003, at Seneca District Hospital in Chester, following a courageous battle with myelocytic leukemia. Born Nov. 11, 1927 to Oklahoma natives Evin and Irena Ogden Brewer, he has been a resident of Westwood for the past 42 years. He shared his construction skills and talents as a woodworker with many throughout the area as a self employed building contractor for 28 years. He was an avid square dancer and along with his wife were charter members of the Lake Almanor Bucks and Does Square Dancing Club. Tom also served his community as a Little League Coach for a number of years, along with racing a stock car on the Lassen Speedway circuit from 1967-1971. He was preceded in death by his son, Bob, in 1982. He is survived by his wife of the past 52 years, Phyllis of Westwood; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Joyce Brewer of Susanville, son Troy of Sacramento, daughter and son-in-law Rhea and Charlie Androy of Westwood, daughter Rhonda Brewer of Westwood, daughter and son-in-law Terese and J Howell of Chico, sister Aylene Middleton of Salisaw, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews along with a host of dear friends. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of his life was held at the graveside in the Westwood Cemetery

Dorothy Bell Boster, 72, died on Saturday, March 29, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Susanville. She was born in Chester, Ark. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had a great love for children, as evidence by her being a self-employed day-care provider for 20 years. Her home was always open to relatives in times of need. She is survived by her son, Eddie Boster of Hermiston, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Steve Fuller of Susanville; brothers, Burl Allen of Dunsmuir, Calif. and Dale Allen of Arkansas; sister and brother-in-law, Leuna and Stanley Bill of Standish and sister, Margaret Ann Johnson of Pollock Pines, Calif. She is also survived by grandchildren, Adreanne, Kyle, Brett, Brandon and Eric and great-grandchild, Keigan. She was preceded in death by husband, Edgar Boster. Graveside services were held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville on Friday, April 4. The family requests that any donations be made in her memory to either the American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity of choice.
Andrew "Ernie" Teachout, 78, of Hot Springs Village, Ark. died of natural causes, April 1. Ernie was born in Pacific Grove. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. Teachout was employed for 25 years by the California Department of Corrections. His assignments included the California Conservation Center in Susanville and the California Rehabilitation Center in Corona. He retired as a captain. Teachout was a charter member of the "Center Wheelers" square dance club in Susanville. He moved to Hot Springs Village in 1981 and became very active in several square dance clubs. Teachout is survived by his wife Juanita Ruth Teachout, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; daughter, Susan Fatame of Richmond, Calif.; son, Andrew Teachout of Santa Cruz; stepsons, Ed and Billy Hiebert, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A wake was held on Friday, April 4, at the Hot Springs Village Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The funeral services were held on Saturday, April 5 at Sacred Heart. A military burial will be conducted at Diamond Crest Cemetery, Johnsonville at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church building fund, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas 71909. Arrangements were by CedarVale Funeral Home of Hot Springs Village.
E. Geraldine "Geri" Cook, 90, died April 5, 2003, with her daughter and son-in-law at her side at their home in Meadow Valley. Geri was born to Leon and Effie Smith White in Almagorda, N.M., on March 29, 1913. She was raised in the Almagordo area and went on to receive her R.N. credentials from Hotel Dieu Hospital in El Paso, Texas. She had been a resident of the Quincy-Meadow Valley areas for 10 years. She had been a longtime resident of Baldwin Park prior to moving to Quincy in 1975, and had resided in Beaverton, Ore., from 1979-97, before returning to Quincy. Geri was a dedicated homemaker. She was a member of the West Covina Chapter No. 202 Order of Eastern Star and the Association of Republican Women. She was an astute student of geology and enjoyed crossword puzzles in her later years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan C. Cook. Geri is survived by her son, Bob Cook of West Covina; her daughter, Dana Gerhardt of Meadow Valley; brother, "Bud" White of Quincy; sister, Jewel Lawry of Quincy; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a niece. A celebration of Geri's life will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, April 11, 2003, in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. Eunice Beatrice Linton Yandell, known as "Old Grandma," passed away at Northern Nevada Medical Center in Sparks, Nev., on April 5, 2003. Eunice was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Civil Bend, Texas to Claude L. and Mamie Lillian Woods Linton. She graduated from high school in Civil Bend, Texas. During World War II, she worked as a welder at the naval shipyards in Richmond. She had been a resident of Manteca for 50 years, moving to Portola four years ago to be closer to her family. Eunice loved her family. She was a great wife, mom and grandma. She also enjoyed the yearly trips to Disneyland. Eunice is survived by her husband, Arthur "Art" Yandell of Portola; her daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Kelly Griffith of Portola; son, Tommy Yandell of Portola; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Connie Yandell of Grass Valley; sons, Danny Yandell and Leonard Rieb, both of Manteca; her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tammy and Gary Milby of Portola; granddaughter, Sherry Prosser of Manteca; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Lenny and Teresa Rieb, and grandson, Michael Rieb, all of Manteca; grandsons, Shawn Yandell of Davis, Ricky Yandell of Ceres; granddaughter, Peggy Frey of Barstow; great grandchildren, Heather and Taylor Prosser, Ricky and Robbie Milby, Jaycee Rieb, Michelle and Landon Yandell, and Kelly Holly. Visitation is scheduled to take place at Manni Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 9, begining at noon until 1:30 p.m., followed by graveside services at 2 p.m., in Whispering Pines Cemetery
on Grizzly Road in Portola.
Keith Lawrence Knight, 61, died at his home in Portola on April 3, 2003. Keith was born to Claude and Dortha Knight on July 12, 1941, in Bell. He was raised in Taft. He moved to Portola eight years ago from Santa Ana. He was an electrician for Disneyland and machinist for Grant Tooling. He enjoyed fishing. Keith is survived by his son, Vincent Jones of Virginia; his daughters, Vicky Jerman of Desert Hot Springs, Paula Ayala of Cathederal City and Shelly Knight of Hampton, Va.; and seven grandchildren. Inurnment will be private.
Sibyle Alline Huckaby Spears died April 1, 2003. Sibyle was born Jan. 10, 1928, in Pine Bluff, Ark., the 10h of 11 children. She grew up in Pine Bluff, Ark., married, and moved to Quincy in 1945, where she worked for 25 years at Mac's Variety Store. In 1978, she moved to Fairfield where she was operations manager for the Bank of the West for 13 years until her retirement in 1991. She returned to Quincy to live with her son, Rick, and relocated with him to Auburn in 1996. In her retirement, she repaired ATM machines, babysat and devoted her life to her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member and leader of the Rebekkah Lodge, PTA, Quincy High Booster Club, Little League Board and attended the Quincy Baptist Church. She enjoyed all sporting events, cooking and children. Sibyle is survived by her two sons, Phil Spears of Rocklin and Rick Spears of Auburn; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her brother, Gene Huckaby of Pine Bluff, Ark. Memorial services were held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Foothill Christian Fellowship in Meadow Vista. Dorothy Lossmann King died March 21, 2003. Dorothy was born in Oakland in 1909. She attended Oakland Tech, Anna Heads and UC-Berkeley. She spent most of her life in Piedmont. She loved to dance, golf and entertain friends and family playing the piano at the family cabin on the Feather River at Layman Flat. She was a long term summer resident at Camp Layman since 1941, first coming to Plumas County in the early 1930s. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the California State Podiatric Association, American Red Cross, St. Moritz Ice Skating Club, Braille for the Blind and Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Crandall. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Janet M. King; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Private family services were held. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
Marie Annette Withers, 78, died on Monday, March 10, 2003 in Reno. She was born on April 13, 1924 in Long Beach, Calif. She lived in Susanville for the past eight years. She retired from bookkeeping in Sacramento. She enjoyed word-find, books, watching TV and shopping and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Steven C. Withers; daughter, Nancy E. Mingo; granddaughters, Joni Kristy, Charish Lillian and Destiney Peace; grandsons, Colt James and March Joseph, great-granddaughters Houston and Corey. She wished to be cremated and released over the ocean.
