U.S. Veteran Shirley Viola Peterson, 78, died early Easter morning April 20, 2003 at Enloe Community Hospital located in Chico. Born to Grant and Nina Paul Hagerty on Sept. 8, 1924 in Dolan, South Dakota, she has been a resident of Lake Almanor for the 34 years, moving here from Woodland Hills, Calif., where she had resided from 1954-1969. She served her country during World War II as a member of the U. S. Coast Guard where she developed her well appreciated cooking talents as a baker. She was an active member of the Lake Almanor, California WH Chapter of the PEO Club where she chaired numerous committees. As a former member of the Seneca Health Care District's auxiliary she was instrumental in the organization of the annual Fun Night. She had also been a member of the Hamilton Branch Firebells. She was an avid Bridge player who enjoyed sewing and needlepoint along with cooking. She is preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her husband of over 56 years Ray of Lake Almanor; children Robert Peterson of Corning and Paulette Roof of Sacramento; sister Betty Seppi of Jackson along with the joys of her later life, grandchildren Aubrae, Chelsea, Allie, Tony, Sean and great grandchildren Tyler and Maddyn. A celebration of her life took place on Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Chester Community United Methodist Church located on Glenwood Dr. and Hwy. 36 in Chester, interment to followed in the Chester District Cemetery. Clifford J. "Pops" Cornwell "Pops," 76, died on Friday, April 4, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, after fighting cancer for the past three years. A military veteran and a retired Ford Motor Company employee, Cornwell was a resident of Lassen County and the Susanville area for the last 25 years. He is survived by his children, Clifford B. Cornwell of Susanville, Jerry Cornwell and family of San Francisco, Dwight Cornwell and family of Colorado and Cindy Pardon and family of Reno; brothers, Reggie Cornwell of Stockton, and Russ Cornwell of Oregon and their families, and his close friends and companions, Ruth Petti-Clerc and Dan and Theresa Rule and family. A military burial and graveside services were held at the Janesville cemetery on Thursday, April 10.
Electa Mae Lazard, 86, died on Oct. 19, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. She was born in Susanville on May 20, 1917 and had been a resident of Lassen County her entire life. She had been a co-owner of Lassen County Title Company and was associated for over 35 years with the escrow and title insurance business, before becoming a real estate agent. She was a member of the Lassen County Board of Realtors for 27 years and was awarded Realtor of the Year in 1992. She was also a member of the Lassen High Alumni Association (class of 1935), Lassen County CattleWomen's Association, Lassen County Cowbells, Xi Delta Lambda member of Beta Sigma Phi and a charter member of the Emblem Club. She was an active member of the Juvenile Justice Commission and helped establish and had participated in the Lassen County Teen Court. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Lee Roy Lazard and her daughter, Rhonda Electa Lazard. She is survived by her sons, Rodney and his wife, Charleen of Folsom, Ridgely and his wife, Kathleen and Randy of Susanville; grandchildren, Michelle Lazard of San Francisco, Rodney Lazard Jr. of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Nancy Lazard of Susanville, Jennifer Lazard-Ottley of Sacramento, James Alling of Lancaster, Brad Lanfranco of Santa Clarita, Nancy Lazard, Ricky Gianottia, Mindy Wolcott and Jhinnah Givens, all of Susanville and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Alfred E. Dillon "Gene," 65, died on Sept. 16, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center after a short illness. He was born on Oct. 13, 1937 in Susanville to Harry and Carmella Dillon. He retired from the California Correctional Center and had worked part time for Wal-Mart. His joys were hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Susanville; son, Tony and daughter, Michelle, both of Reno; mother, Carmella Sigg; and brothers, Phillip and Richard, both of Susanville. Per his request there will be no services.
Jean Boardman Fremd, 79, died on Oct. 8, 2003. She was born on Nov. 17, 1923. She was a native Lawrence, Kan. and was an active member of the P.E.O Sisterhood, Chapter QE, Lost Altos, Calif. and the Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale. She is survived by husband, Richard Douglas Eugene Fremd of Sunnyvale; sons, Bruce Douglas and wife, Liane J. Fremd of Kirkland, Wash. and Thomas Richard and wife, Sharon M. Fremd of Fremont; daughter, Kathryn Jean Fremd and husband, Duane Petersen of San Jose. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three brothers. A memorial service was held on Sunday, Oct. 26 in Sunnyvale. Arrangements made by Lima Family Mortuary in Sunnyvale.
Karen Lee Clemons, 59, of Susanville, died on Tuesday, July 29. Clemons was born in Long Beach and had moved to Susanville in 1996. She was a very special lady, very loving and caring; quick to reach out to help or comfort all those she would meet and loved. She will be dearly missed by many. She is survived by her husband, Herb; sister, Judy Sterrenburg; mother, Julia Wicoxsin; step-daughter, Phlinda Hopkins and grandson, Carl Jr. Also surviving are three nieces and many dear friends. Memorial services were held at the Colonial Mortuary Chapel on Saturday, Aug. 2.
Florence Lillian Hamilton, 77, of Susanville, died on July 25, 2003. She was born on June 2, 1926 to Carl and Regina Mortensen at Pequot Lakes, Minn. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, John of Susanville; sons, Mark and Scott Hamilton of Sacramento, David Hamilton of Rodeo, Calif. and Daniel Hamilton of Poway, Calif.; granddaughters, Tonya and Andrea Hamilton of Poway, Sarah Champany of Sacramento, JoElla Garcia of Fresno; brother, Donald Mortenson of Minneapolis, Minn. and three daughters-in-law, Karen JoAnn and Lorie. She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. She and John were married June 13, 1953 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes. Prior to that she had received schooling at Pequot Lakes, Minneapolis Business College, St. Cloud Minnesota Teacher's College and the University of Nevada, Reno. The primary importance in her life was her faith in God, love for her family, love for everyone she met and love of music - both listening and performing. She was faithful in church activities, family responsibilities and living a life of God's love to all people. Prior to marriage she was secretary to the president of Twin Cities Federal Savings and Loan Association of Minneapolis, attended and graduated from St. Cloud State Teacher College with a Minnesota teaching credential in music and physical education. She taught those subjects to junior and senior high students in Plainview, Minn. from 1950-1953. Even though she was blessed with outstanding athletic and musical abilities, she had great empathy for students and other who were not gifted in those areas. She especially liked tennis, roller skating and dance. She had a strong work ethic since all of her children were expected to contribute to the family resources after the death of her father in 1932, when she was six. This ethic remained with her for her entire life. She used as much of her time in serving other people as she could. This involved such things as peer-counseling in college, membership in community service organizations and in church work. After moving to Susanville in 1964, she continued her service to church, family and education. She was a substitute teacher for Susanville, Janesville, Johnstonville and Litchfield schools before accepting a full-time teaching position at Janesville and then Susanville. Hamilton urged her husband to do fire lookout with her after her family had gone out into the world on their own. She knew that most married couples would not be able to live together in a 14-foot by 14-foot fire lookout, but if one could, it would strengthen the marriage even more. And such was the case. In her last four years while a resident at Susanville Care and Rehabilitation her love and smile had a great and wonderful effect upon other residents and staff as well as her family. She was a wonderful and beautiful gift that God sent into this world. She will be greatly missed, but the result of her love will live forever. Viewing was held on Tuesday, July 29 at the Colonial Chapel. A funeral service was held on July 30 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Susanville. Interment service was at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Berenice Louise Smith McKeown Lamson, 83, died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, in Folsom, Calif. A native of Westwood, Calif., she was born on May 7, 1920. She was a long time resident of the communities of Stockton and San Jose. She was a published author, historian and educator. Her family and many friends will miss her greatly. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon McKeown Newman and husband, John Newman; sister, Doris Smith Flatter and grandchildren, Andrew and Alex McKeown Newman. Memorials may be made to the Westwood Library and the Susanville District Library, 1618 Main St., Susanville, CA 96130. Green Valley Mortuary in Folsom is handling arrangemtns.
William Robert Boyle, 75, died with his family at his side on Monday evening Aug. 4, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Born May 31, 1928 in Rapidan, Minnesota he was adopted at a young age by Iowa natives Phillip and Agusta Lachmiller Boyle. He has been a resident of Westwood since moving here in 1973 from San Pablo, Calif. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy at the conclusion of World War II and went on to serve the citizens of Richmond, Calif. as a professional firefighter for 26 years. Upon his retirement from the city of Richmond's fire department and his move to Westwood, he went to work for the Collins Pine Company for a number of years operating a water tender. He became a valuable member of the Westwood Volunteer Fire Department helping to spread his skill among the volunteers. He was a member of the California Retired Firefighters Association and life long member of the Contra Costa Credit Union. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who could also shoot a great game of pool. He and his late wife, Leah, were passionate travelers who traveled the country from coast to coast and from Canada to the tip of the Mexican Baja Peninsula where they spent 14 winters residing in Cabo San Lucas. He is preceded in death by his wife of thirty years Leah who passed away March 16 and two sisters. He is survived by his children Janice Boyle of Concord, Calif., Jeanette Newton of Martinez, Calif., William Boyle Jr. of Colusa, Calif., Bobby Hall of Pahrump, Nev., Janet Etingoff of El Sobrante, Calif., Randy Reese of Pinole, Calif. and Claudia Byrd of Portola, along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A celebration of his life took place at the graveside alongside his late wife in the Westwood Cemetery

Naomi A. Waltman, 85, died at Banner Lassen Hospital in Susanville on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003. She was born in Pescadero, Calif. on June 16, 1918 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 54 years. Prior to living in Lassen County she resided in Redwood City. She enjoyed cooking, camping and her family. Her first and last jobs were with the Grand Caf. During that time she was owner of the Seven Cares Caf and garage in Litchfield. She is survived by her son, Bill and daughter-in-law Raelene Waltman; sisters, Connie Meggisen and Virginia Gonzalez; grandchildren, Tammy, Trina, Thad; great-grandchildren, Buffy, Wendy, Mindy, Marlene, Katie, Ty and Curtis and one great-great-grandchild, Jake. Private services will be at a later date and any donations can be made to a youth group of your choice. The Waltman family wishes o express their gratitude to Dr. John Dozier for his love and concern to the family.
Jim L. Vilmur Jr., 51, died on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was born in Modesto, Calif., on May 4, 1952 and had been a Lassen County resident since moving here from Ceres, Calif. in 1986. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator and operated equipment that assisted in the farming of Susan Valley Ranch for 15 years. He desired to be a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Alturas, and was to have been baptized into the church just days after his passing. He is survived by his parents, Helen and Jim Vilmur Sr. of Ravendale; sister, Linda Jordan of Ravendale; one niece, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Graveside services were held at the Ceres Memorial Park on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
