Karen Eve Eppeneder, 62, died Easter Sunday morning, April 20, 2003, at her residence outside of Taylorsville. Karen was born Aug. 16, 1940, to Robert and Marion Vieneau Bowen in San Francisco. She had been a resident of Indian Valley for 14 years, moving from Livermore. She had been employed at the Greenville Branch of Plumas Bank for nine years as a teller. Prior to moving to the area she was instrumental in the day to day operations of her and her husband's appliance repair business in Livermore. She was a member of the former Greenville Soroptomist Club and the Wednesday night Bunko Ladies of Indian Valley. She was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed traveling with her husband to different venues to show their cars She enjoyed entertaining and will be remembered by many throughout the area for her excellent cooking. She liked to go fishing, was an avid reader and would never turn down an invitation to go shopping, She was preceded in death by her father and brother, Richard. Karen is survived by her husband of more than 42 years, Larry of Indian Valley, daughters, Kari Lyn Johnson of Susanville and Lisa Balbiani of Taylorsville; mother, Marion Bowen of Greenville; and five grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2003, at the Mt. Jura Mineral and Museum Building located in Taylorsville. Nellie Alcinda Durrant, 87, died at her daughter's residence in Quincy, Thursday, April 24, 2003. Nellie was born March 9, 1916, to Shasta County natives Charles and Addie Mott Guill in Anderson. She had been a resident of Durham, for the past 32 years, and was formally a resident of Quincy for 31 years. A longtime business woman, she was active in The Plumas Chapter of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, the Quincy Rebecca Lodge the Emblem Club of Quincy and the Durham Grange along with the Quincy Mining Chapter. Nellie is survived by her daughters, Nelda Jean Gott of Durham and Karen Marie Addison of Quincy; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Following cremation, a celebration of her life will take place at the graveside along side her late husband in the Chico Cemetery

Ralph Meinel died April 9, 2003, at his home in Williams, Ore. Ralph was born July 23, 1939 in Los Angeles. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Northern California, mainly in the Plumas, Sierra and Tahoe National Forests. He resided in Meadow Valley from 1984-95. Ralph enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son, Jeff Meinel of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter, Kristin Hammer of Issaquah, Wash.; his father, Harold Meinel of Duarte and one grandchild.
Dominic Martini died April 20, 2003, in San Antonio, Texas. Dominic was born Aug. 2, 1977 in Reno, Nev. He was raised in Portola and graduated in 1995 from Portola High School. Dominic had many friends. He enjoyed riding his pedal bike until he discovered "the engine." Once the motorcycle was invented, he "rode." Throughout his school years, he played baseball and football. But riding his motorcycle with his friends and his black lab, Rosie, running along side was what he enjoyed most. Following graduation, he worked at Sierra Pacific Industries in Loyalton. After his sister introduced him to the U.S. Air Force, he decided that a career in the military was what he wanted. He was assigned to the Red Horse Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base. While there, he met and married his wife, Kichana. After completing four years at Nellis, they moved to Alaska. He re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after a year and a-half and he was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Dominic is survived by his wife, Kichana of Anchorage, Alaska; his parents, Mike and Julie Martini of Portola; his sister, Fayne Martini of Reno, Nev.; his grandparents, Celeste and Emma Martini of Fair Oaks; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held April 26, 2003, in the Father Burns Social Hall at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portola. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
Dorothy Carnes Rose Carter, 83, died March 17, 2001, at Enloe Medical Center in Chico. She was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Sevier County, Tenn., to James Layfatte and Malinda Jane Adams Carnes. She had been a resident of Tennessee until 1967, moving to Los Altos and then to Portola in 1980. In 1999, she moved to Chico. Dorothy worked as a homemaker.
She was a member of Allegheny Baptist Church in Tennessee, Senior Volunteers in Los Altos and Portola Hospital Auxiliary and Portola Hospice. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde Rose, in 1983, and Raymond Carter, in 1999; one brother; and four sisters. She is survived by her sons, Jim Rose of Beaver Dam, Wis., Ted Rose of Portola, Joe Rose of Louisville, Tenn., and John Rose of Madisonville, Tenn.; daughters, Sharon Rose of Winston-Salem, N.C., Bunny Taylor of Portola and Gypsy Rose of Morro Bay; brother, Charles Carnes of Maryville, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held March 21, at 11 a.m. in Whispering Pines Cemetery, Grizzly Road and Highway 70, Portola.
George Ross, 82, died on Friday, May 2, 2003, at a care facility in Willows, Calif. He was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Glenn Ross in December of 2001. He is survived by his son, Ernest LeRoy Ross of Elk Creek, Calif.; daughter, Jenean Ross Davidson of Willows; sister, Phyllis Ray Neighbors of Klamath Falls, Ore., five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Private family services were held. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home who are handling arrangements.
Billie A. Matzinger age 93, died on Monday morning, April 28, 2003 at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation located in Susanville. Born March 25, 1910 in Pennsylvania, she moved to Lake Almanor in 1994 from Southern California and due to health complications was required to move to a care facility in Susanville in January of 2003. She enjoyed all types of crafts and will be remembered by many for the beautiful items she produced knitting. She is preceded in death by her husband Ray in 1980 and son Verne in January of this year. She is survived by her daughter Patsy L. Roarty of Lake Almanor; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and she was anxiously expecting twin great-grandchildren due in September of this year. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory located in Quincy a private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. James R. Covello, 75, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Hospice House in Monterey, Calif. He was a 20 year resident of Lassen County. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during the war in Korea and was a native of Seattle. He worked as an assembly line worker for the Ford Motor Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Lee Covellor in April, 2002. He is survived by sons; James R. Covello Jr. of Big Sur, Calif. and Eric R. Covello of Paso Robles, Calif.; sisters, Edith Dufault, Helen Woolridge and Jean Covello, all of Washington; brothers, Phil Covello of Washington and John Covello of Manteca. Cremation was directed by Healey Crematory in Salinas.
Leon Lopshire, 79, died and went to meet his beloved wife of 54 years, Jadene, behind the moon, on May 8, 2003. He was born in Camargo, Okla., on April 12, 1924. Although he worked in California in the lumber industry, as a forklift operator and other various jobs, he was, at heart a cowboy. He is survived by his four daughters, Cecile Neilson of Reno, Lynne Smith of Willits, Calif., Liv Lopshire of Sparks and Wanda Lopshire of Sparks. Also surviving are five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Lopshire has four, surviving brothers and a very large extended family. There are no services planned.
Graveyard services for Miss Jessie J. Gibson will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Lassen Cemetery, at 1 p.m. in Susanville.
Leonore Hertha Poetzsch, 76, died at her home outside of Quincy on May 10, 2003. Leonore was born May 15, 1926, to William and Hertha Mahner Barth in Kenosha, Wisc. In September 1951 she moved to Quincy from Fort Wayne, Ind. She retired from the Quincy Branch Bank of America after more than 25 years. She was a member of the Quincy congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, a charter member of the Quincy Chapter of the Quincy Chapter of Sigma Beta Phi and a longtime member of the Feather River Grange No. 440, where she served as their treasurer. She loved to travel and visit her relatives in Germany, and was a staunch recycler. She collected cups, plates and lighthouses. Leonore is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert, of Quincy; sons, Michael of Red Bluff and Mark of Greenville; her brothers, Conrad and Werner Barth, both of Redding; and two grandchildren. A celebration of Leonore's life will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Quincy Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1550 East Main St., in Quincy.
