Linfred Amalus Ness died May 10, 2003.
Linfred was born June 17, 1914, in Sentinel Butte, N.D. He moved to Portola in 1941 and worked for the Western Pacific Railroad until being injured in a train accident. Following his rehabilitation, he owned and operated Ness's Richfield service station on Highway 70 in Portola. He retired and sold his business in 1968, when he accepted a position with the U.S. Forest Service at Mills Peak. After an enjoyable career there, Linfred retired again. In 1999, he moved to Citrus Heights. He was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church. Linfred enjoyed working in the yard and raising roses. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Fredricka Ness; and his sisters, Margaret, Nora, Lily and Delores. Linfred is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mae; sons, Robert of Sacramento and Darrel of Portola; daughters, Linda Ross of Cleveland, Tenn., and Vera Keith of Sacramento; his sister, Muriel Rilea of Greenville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held in Portola on Wednesday, May 14, at noon in Shady Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the church at P.O. Box 1044, Portola, CA 96122.
Arline Mae Carlson Vonfeldt died Feb. 12, 2003, in Ukiah. Arline was born on March 28, 1929, in Helper, Utah, to A.J. Carlson and Audrey Green Carlson. In 1941, she moved to Portola and graduated from Portola High School in 1949. In December 1950, she married Bob L. Vonfeldt and moved to Covelo, eventually settling in Potter Valley. She enjoyed long walks, family, growing and canning vegetables, family reunions and church. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Darlene Carlson and Lillian Butcher; brothers, Jimmy Carlson and Bill Carlson. Arline is survived by her daughters, Sally Jo Pendelton and Susan Vonfeldt; her sons, Sam Vonfeldt and Scott Vonfeldt; her brothers, A.J. Carlson, Jr. of Nice and Cal Carlson of Portola; sister, Ida Evans of Arizona and Utah; one aunt; numerous nieces and nephews; and 11 grandchildren. Services were held at the Church of Latter Day Saints church in Ukiah on Feb. 17, 2003. Burial followed at the Potter Valley Cemetery.
Mary E. (Peckman) Guyer, 81, of Bend, Roseburg and The Dalles died April 30, 2003. Mary was born Dec. 25, 1921, to May and Harry Peckman in Rantoul, Kan. She was raised in Kansas and attended Baker University, graduating in education. In June 1943, she joined the Coast Guard and served for three years as a Chief Commissary Steward. She taught high school home economics and math in Pennsylvania and California. After teaching school, she worked as a regional distributer for the Sacramento Bee and then for the state of Nevada as a systems research Analyst. In 1984, she retired and spent two years traveling throughout the United States. She was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Portola, the Green Church in Roseburg, First Presbyterian Church of South Lake Tahoe and Bend and the Oregon Veterans Home church and bible study. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, volunteering for reading programs and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis E. Guyer; and her daughter, Penelope. Mary is survived by her close friend, Willie Copperstone; daughters, Jennifer Sheldon and Wendy Stevens of Oregon and Mary Lynn Barnwell of Venezuela; brother, James Peckham of Rantoul, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of life was held in Bend on May 8, 2003, at Judy's In The Garden. Burial service will be held Friday, May 16, 2003, at 1 p.m., at the Roseburg National Cemetery

Linda Morrison, 53, died May 6, 2003, in Reno, Nev. Linda was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in April 1950. She was a retired data operator for Social Security Administration in Salinas. She enjoyed family life, traveling, and helping her children participate in various activities such as 4-H, FFA, band, dance and twirl. She enjoyed using her talents in sewing and crafts to make gifts for friends and family. She married Alan Morrison in 1969, and they lived in Salinas for 30 years. Recently, they moved to Portola. She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald, and her father, Gerald. She is survived by her husband, Alan Morrison, Sr., of Portola; son, Alan Jr., of Tempe, Ariz.; daughter, Mary Sauer of Wauconda, Ill.; two grandchildren; her mother, Donna Lund of Paradise; sisters, Barbara Lund of Paradise and Carol Hurst of Tehachapi.
Dirk Vanderzwan, 79, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Quincy. Born in Holland, Oct. 24, 1923, he immigrated to the United States following World War II. He had been a resident of Plumas County for the past 36 years. Dirk retired from the former Plumas County Hospital as a maintainence technician after more than 30 years in the field. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. Dirk is survived by his son, Wayne Miller, of Quincy and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ada in 2002. Billie A. Matzinger, 93, died Monday April 28, 2003, at Sunbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation in Susanville. Born March 25, 1910, in Pennsylvania, she moved to Lake Almanor in 1994 from Southern California and due to health complications was required to move to a care facility in Susanville, in January of 2003. Billie enjoyed all types of crafts and will be remembered by many for the beautiful items she produced knitting. Billie is survived by her daughter, Patsy L. Roarty, of Lake Almanor; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and she was anxiously expecting twin great grandchildren due in September of this year. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ray, in 1980 and son Verne in January of this year. Following cremation, a private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. James "Jim" Wesley McKinney, Jr., 44, died on Highway 395, North of Reno, Nev., on May 1, 2003. Jim was born in Portola on Nov. 12, 1958, to James Sr., and Victoria McKurtis McKinney. He was a lifelong resident of Sierra County. Jim attended grammar school in Sierraville and graduated from Loyalton High School. While in high school, he played football, was a member of the High School Rodeo Association, the Sierra Valley Roping Club and for many years was in 4-H where he showed sheep at the Plumas-Sierra County Fair. He graduated from Yuba College and attended the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a heavy equipment operator, and for many years his job took him to Alaska and Russia. He attended Sierraville Community Church as a child and Loyalton Community Church as an adult. He enjoyed family, hard work, watching movies, traveling and skiing. Jim is survived by his parents, James Sr., and Victoria McKinney of Sierraville; his wife, Darla of Loyalton; his stepchildren, Tyler and Codi of Loyalton; brother, Rod McKinney of Sierraville; sister, Tracy Studer of Calpine; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as cousins. Funeral services were held May 6, 2003, at the Community Church in Loyalton, with burial in the Sierraville Cemetery. Donations in Jim's memory can be made to the Loyalton Booster Club, P.O. Roy Lee Bullard, 76, died May 5, 2003, at his home in Portola. He was born April 1, 1927, in Marlow, Okla., and raised in Duncan, Okla. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was injured at Iwo Jima. He attended Stockton College and University of the Pacific. He later worked at Sharp Army Depot from 1945 until he retired in 1972. He moved from Manteca to Portola in 1986. An avid outdoorsman, he was active in many organizations, including the Stockton Sportsmen's Club, NRA, Ducks Unlimited, Plumas County Fish and Game Commission, Sierra Valley Gun Club, Sierra Valley Sportsmen's Club, past president of the Amblers Club. He was a member of the Portola Station Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Haston Cooper, and his stepfather, Ed Cooper. Survivors include his wife, Ann Bullard of Portola; son, Bruce Bullard of Galt; daughters, Joyce Bullard of San Diego and Marie Walsh; brother, Floyd Cooper of Clovis, N.M.; sisters, Mary Bishop of Duncan, Okla., and Shirley Davidson of Paris, Texas; and two grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Sunday, May 11, at 2 p.m., at Portola Station Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Tahoe Forest Hospice, P.O. Box 759, Truckee, CA 96160.
George Oliver Wheeler, 70, died Wednesday May 7, 2003 with his wife and family members at his side at his long-time ranch residence in Indian Valley. Born July 2, 1932, to Wesley and Idella Collins Wheeler in Petaluma, George moved with his family to Indian Valley at the age of 14. Following graduation from Greenville High School in 1950 he helped run the family dairy for a short time prior to working in the timber industry as a faller for more than 50 years. He last worked for Gerspacher Brothers Logging and was still called upon for his expertise from time to time. George was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved to hunt, fish and bike. He was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association and the International Bench Rest Shooters Association along with the Indian Valley Gun Club. George was an accomplished marksman who shot pistols competitively for a number of years. George's greatest passion was collecting and restoring antique autos, tractors and engines. He was a John Deer Tractor aficionado and had restored numerous models. George was a longtime member of the Indian Valley Grange where he served as a past master of the lodge. George is survived by his wife Rita of Indian Valley; daughters, Betty Corberra of Westwood, Kitty Creasey of Central Point, Ore.; Jean Norman of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; Sharon Lambert of Caldwell, Idaho; son, Ed Johnson of Wasilla, Alaska; stepdaughters Betty Lee of Gray, Maine, Elaine Hamilton of Paradise, and Sareanda Lordes of Ithica, NY; brothers Lloyd of Seldovia, Alaska and Jim of Shandon; sister Evelyn Apperson of Crooked River Ranch, Ore.; fifteen grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Orpha, in 1977 and three grandchildren. A celebration of George's life was held at the graveside in the Greenville District Cemetery

A private family sea scattering will occur on April 13, for Glenn R. Thompson, 84, former long-time resident of Susanville, Calif., who passed away in Chico, on Tuesday, March 6, 2001. He was born in Escondido, Calif., Aug. 9, 1916. He graduated from Oakland High School in Oakland, Calif.. in 1933. He attended UC-Berkeley and received his BA and his masters in education from San Francisco State University. He married Jean McCougall on July 25, 1937,in Reno, Nev. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He began a 35-year career in education in 1941, as a sixth grade teacher at McKinley Elementary School in Susanville. In 1949, he joined the Lassen County Superintendent of Schools staff as the coordinator of audio visual services and child welfare and attendance officer. In 1963 he took office as the superintendent of Lassen County Schools. He remained the superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1976. He was a charter member of the Susanville Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. His wife, Jean, preceded him in death in 1998. He is survived by his son, Robin Thompson, of Chico, Calif.; his daughter, Linda Hinman, of Fair Oaks, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
