Mildred Evelyn "Millie" DeHaven-Glines, 90, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at the Long Term Care Unit of Seneca Health Care District in Chester, Calif. Born April 30, 1912, in Santa Cruz, Calif. She was raised in Davis, Calif., and moved to Chester, in 1947. She was a devoted homemaker who dedicated her life to raising her families children and to caring for her spouse. Millie always placed her family first in her life. She is remembered by her family as an excellent cook who enjoyed tending to her yard and garden along with crocheting. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Albert O. "Curley" Glines, of Chester; children, Janice Boitano of Magalia, Calif., Bill DeHaven of Mesa, Ariz., "Biff" DeHaven of Susanville, Calif., Albert E. Glines of Casstown, Ohio, and Donald Glines of Vallejo, Calif.; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by daughters Betty McAlister, Mary Bovee and Della Glines along with two sisters and five brothers. Visitations was held Monday May 13, and those who wish may call at the Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Chester A celebration of her life was held Monday, May 13, at the Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Chester, with interment to follow in the Chester District Cemetery. Amity Jenea Martin, 21, died April 27, 2002, in Grass Valley. She was born June 30, 1980, in Oroville to Michael Fred and Sharon Irene Irick Martin. Amity was a homemaker and mother, and a resident of Portola for the past 10 years. She graduated Portola High School in 1999. She worked at Gold Mountain in various capacities and as a clerk at Dollards. Amity is preceded in death by her grandparents, Irene Conn and Gene Irick. She is survived by her son, Gabriel Garcia; partner, Felipe Garcia; parents, Michael and Sharon Martin of Portola; brother, Justin Martin of Reno; stepmother, Genevieve Martin of Portola; stepbrothers, Ian and Sean Hamlett; grandmother, Frances Butler; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Graveside inurnment service was held Tuesday, May 7, at 1 p.m. in Whispering Pines Cemetery, Grizzly Road, Portola.
Wilmer "Willie" Sutton passed away March 20, 2002, at the Carson Valley Residential Care Center at the age of 97. He was born Feb. 26, 1905, in Douglas, Kan. Before moving to Carson Valley in June of 2001, Willie lived with Bob and Karyn Merriman in Chester for seven years. Many will remember him as the sweet, whitehaired man accompanying Bob and Karyn to breakfast or lunch at local eateries. Willie was a second dad to Bob and they had been best of friends for over 50 years. Willie moved to California with his parents and two brothers when he was 17 years old. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Tarzana where he had perfect attendance for 10 years. He was also a member of the Elks Club and was voted "Elk of the Year" in 1975. He also coached boys softball in Tarzana for 15 years. Willie loved to fish and hike around the woods. He moved to the residential care center in Gardnerville to be closer to his daughter. He is survived by his daughter, MaryAnn Richardson of Gardnerville, Nev., one granddaughter , one grandson, and three great-granddaughters. Willie was a kind, gentle man and will be missed by all who knew him.
Redella Jessie Deane age 65, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at Enloe Community Hospital in Chico, CA. Born November 25, 1936, in Bonneyville, WA, Redella has been a resident of the Lake Almanor Peninsula for the past four years moving here from Yuma, Arizona, where she had resided for 12 years, Redella has been a member of the teaching profession for thirty years, and was currently employed by the Plumas Unified School District as a special education teacher at Chester High School. She was a 1972 graduate of Chico State University where she received her teaching credential and went on to receive her masters degree in special education from the University of Arizona at Phoenix. Redella, being hearing impaired herself, took great pride in the accomplishments of her students. She was a devoted educator who contributed greatly to her profession. Redella was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Order of Eastern Star, PTA and the California Teachers Association. Redella is survived by her husband of 24 years, Lester of the Lake Almanor Peninsula, children Daniel Calkins of Yuma, Ariz., Robert Calkins of Colorado, Rosellen Bonney of Chester, and Georgia CalkinsGodin of Michigan along with 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one grandchild. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of Redella's life was held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002, at the Clear Creek Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located on Highway 147, Clear Creek. Charlotte Ethel Smith, 80, died at her residence in Red Bluff on Friday, May 3, 2002, of natural causes. She was born Oct. 4, 1921, in Paradise.
She lived in Chester 34 years, then moved to Red Bluff in 1980. She was employed by Collins Pine in Chester at a bookkeeper for 15 years. She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star, including the Westwood Chapter No. 377 Order of Eastern Star, and Vesper Chapter No. 20 Order of Eastern Star; a member of the Red Bluff Emblem Club, and was an avid bridge player. Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Poore of Portland, ore.; son, Gary Smith of Redding; sister, Rebecca Brakebill of Palm Springs; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Private inurnment will take place at Pine Creek Cemetery
in Chico.
Rose Frances Cozort age 82 passed away Saturday, May 4, 2002 at her home in Chester, from cancer. Born October 4, 1919 in Trujillo, Colo., she went on to attend and graduate from the University of Utah where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She moved to Westwood, from Sunnyside, Utah, and later to Chester, in 1947. Rose had been a member of the teaching profession for thirty-one years, retiring from the Plumas Unified School District after teaching in Chester, for 25 years. Rose was a devout and longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester. A member of the Chester/Lake Almanor Seniors, she served her community on the Plumas County Commission on Aging and was an active participant in zoning and water rights issues. She was a strong supporter of veterans both as a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary where she was honored as a member of the 8/40 group and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a member of the California Teachers Association and the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She recruited people to share her more gentle passions such as her native language Spanish, flowers and birds. he is survived by her husband of 52 years, Charles "John" W. Cozort Sr. of Chester, children Charles "Chuck" W. Cozort Jr. of Carmichael, Everett L. Cozort of Shingle Springs and Colette M. Cozort of Chester, brothers Caesar Cobo of Rio Rico, AZ, F. L. "Pete" Cobo of Seal Beach, and Thomas Cobo of Puyallup, WA, sisters Lucy Cowley of Mountain View and Julie Schlaich of San Jose, along with four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous niecesand nephews. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will take place at 7 p.m. Friday May 10, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the repose of her soul 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Christ the King Catholic Church with interment to follow in the Chester District Cemetery. Shirley May Oliver, 73, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at Redding Memorial Hospital. She was born in Minnesota on Aug. 24, 1928, and had been a resident of Lassen County, since moving from Vancouver, Wash., 11 years ago. Besides being a mother and a homemaker, she had been employed for 12 years as an employee of Hewlitt-Packard. She is survived by her daughter, Lily Oliver of Vancouver, Wash.; sons, James Oliver of Brush Prairie, Wash., and David Oliver of Fort Smith, Ark.; and her companion of 22 years, Dave Lingo of Little Valley, Calif. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A gathering to remember Shirley will be held at the Buckhorn Saloon in McArthur, Calif., at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 7. The family requests that any donations be made in Shirley's memory to the American Cancer Society.
Cecelia Elizabeth Ellen Britt, 80, died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at the SunBridge Health Care and Rehabilitation. She was born in Stockton, Calif., March 11, 1922, and had been a resident of Lassen County, since moving from Red Bluff, Calif., 35 years ago. Britt enjoyed crocheting, and her flower garden. She had worked as a cook for Lassen Community Hospital for the last ten years. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Wright of Janesville; sisters, Dora Hitchcock of Arizona, Thelma Mayberry of Arizona, and Lela Fiddler of Colorado; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Virginia J. Ford, a longtime resident of Chester, died peacefully in Davis on April 9, 2002 at age 87. Virginia was born on June 2, 1914 in Pueblo, Colorado, the daughter of John Evan Jones and Nellie Myrtle Hodges. In 1923, she moved with her family to Pittsburg, California. Upon graduation from high school. Virginia moved to Berkeley and worked in the payroll department of Standard Oil Company in San Francisco. Her brother, Dan Jones, introduced her to his Cal Berkeley roommate Adrian "Spud" Ford. Spud and Virginia were married in Berkeley on May 3, 1941. Following their wedding, they both worked in the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond, California, where Virginia worked in the accounting department until the birth of their son, Gary, in 1945. In June 1947, the family moved to Chester, where Spud Ford took a job with Collins Pine Company. In 1951, their daughter, Adrienne, was born. The family moved into their new house during a heavy snowfall in early 1952. This was their home until 1999, when they moved to Davis. Virgina, Spud's "favorite blond," was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. She made most of the clothes for her family, and enjoyed needlework, bridge club, and gardening in her large yard. A devoted wife, she and Spud were inseperable, particularly during his retirement years. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in late 2000 after 59 years of marriage. She is survived by her son, Gary Ford of Davis and his wife Susie; daughter Adrienne Barr of Portland, Ore., and her husband Charlie; grandson Evan Ford; granddaughter Kristin Ford and her husband Brian Suter; and her greatgrandson Jeffrey Suter. Virginia's family will miss her everpresent smile and gentle manner. In accordance with her wishes, no funeral services will be held. The family requests that remembrances be made to your favorite charity. Informal celebrations of her life are planned for family and friends.
Dorothy Alice Freeman Smith died at the age of 86 on May 4, 2002, at East Plumas District Hospital in Portola. Dorothy was born April 4, 1916 in Blairsden to Charles Henry and Eliza Alice Stephenson Freeman. Dorothy was a life long resident of Portola. She worked in Central Supply at Washoe Medical Center for 10 years, and was a homemaker. Dorothy was a member of Native Daughters of the Golden West, and O.E.S. She was preceded in death by her husband Oran Ellis in 1965, husband Ralph Rutter in 1984, daughter Margaret Marie Ellis, and brothers Charles W. Freeman, William Andrew Freeman, and Joel Edward Freeman. She is survived by her husband Charles E. Smith of Portola; her son Charles B. "Barney" Ellis of Portland, Ore..; stepson Dale Rutter; stepdaughter Darlene Mantyla and 12 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on May 18, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Manni Funeral Home.
