Thelma "Granny" Crandall, 105, died recently. Granny was born Dec. 8, 1897 in Shingletown to Hattie and Bill Cadle. She had four brothers, Raymond, Clyde, Arlo and Stanley; and two sisters, Kate and June Cadle. At the age of 16 she worked for the telephone company in Red Bluff, Willows and Butte City as an operator, and was the first to receive a trans-Atlantic phone call. She worked as a registered nurse and later in life opened a residential facility to care for mentally retarded elderly women just released from state hospitals. She spent the majority of her life helping others. At the age of 87, she lost her license to care for the women because she no longer could hear the fire alarm. She lived alone for 10 years after that, until at the age of 97 she moved in with her grandson in Chester. She was politically active and served on the Central Committee of the Democratic Party. Memorial services are planned for a later date. Her remains were cremated.
Ronald Harlan Albers of Janesville died at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nev., May 14, 2003. He was born in Lincoln, Neb., on Sept. 25, 1923. Ron served in the Army Signal Corps from 1943-45, landing in Normandy,France on D-day plus three. His unit monitored, intercepted and forwarded German radio signals at the front line to company commanders. Ron and his unit received numerous medals and citations for their work in shortening the war. In 1950, he graduated from Washington State University with a degree in business administration. He worked for Owens Corning Fiberglass as a administrative manager in Spokane, Seattle and San Francisco, retiring in 1984. He enjoyed hunting, mini stock racecars, woodworking, gem faceting and camping. He was president of the Lassen Gem and Mineral Society after moving to the Janesville area in 1985. He was also a member of the Reno Woodchucks. Ron is survived by his wife, Madge; his children, Pam Kirkbride of Wilton, Randy Albers of Oregon City, Ore., Rhonda Sue Noggles of Bozeman, Mont., Harley Albers of Danville and Jeff Albers of Livingston, Mont.; his brother, Frank of Darley, North Yorkshire, England; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on May 19, 2003. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Janesville Fire Safe Council or the American Cancer Society.
Tom Thomas Jr., 87, died at on Sunbridge Convalescent Hospital on May 12, 2003. He was born on Oct. 6, 1915 in Fayette, Miss. And has been a resident of Lassen County for the past 51 years. He was baptized at an early age in Jefferson County, Phillips Chapel Baptist Church. He came from Mississippi to Herlong in February of 1952. He joined the First Baptist Church in September of 1999 and retired in Oct. 15, 1980. He met and married Essie Lee Peoples on March 29, 1943. He is survived by his wife, Essie of Herlong; grandsons Larry Thomas of White City, Ore, Tom Thomas IV of Rex, Ga. and Tony Peoples of Sacramento; granddaughters, Patricia Thomas of Las Vegas and Tammy Jones of Boise, six great-great-grandchildren and four great-great-great-grandchildren. Services were held on Saturday, May 17. at the First Baptist Church in Herlong. Interment followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Darrell Duane Schenk, 44, died on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at his home in Las Vegas, Nev. He was born on Aug. 29, 1958, at Norton AFB in San Bernandino, Calif. to Gilbert and Shirley Schenk. He lived and attended schools in England, Japan and several U.S. locations before graduating from El Camino High School in Oceanside, Calif. He attended Mira Costa College in Oceanside. He spent many years in auto body repair and painting. His love was really cattle ranching he in Colorado. She was preceded in death by his son, John Peter. He is survived by Jeri, his best friend and companion for many years, of Las Vegas; son, Eric of Fallbrook, Calif.; daughter, Amber and her husband, Jay Baluski and grandson, Trevor of New Jersey; and daughters, Lauren, Natasha, Kathleen and Jenna Schenk of Connecticut; parents, Gilbert and Shirley Schenk of Susanville; siblings, David and Joyce Schenk of Altus, Okla., Carlene and Keith Jones of Riverside, Calif., Deylan and Elsie Schenk and Debra and Gerry Marshall of Susanville, Janine Petry and Lori and Owen Spencer of Crescent City, Calif. Private services were held at Our Father's House Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev. Nevada Funeral Service-Nevada Burial and Cremation Society handled arrangements.
Ann Gonsalves, 85, died on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at her Klamath Falls, Ore. residence with family at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Clarence Gonsalves; son, Joerome Gonsalves; sister, Tillie and brothers, Laurance, Hank, Chuck, Manuel and Alfred. She is survived by her children, Joseph Gonsalves of Reno, Diane and Ken Jennings of Klamath Falls, Kathy and George Maciel of McKinleyville, Calif. and Cissy and Bob Alexander of Carmichael, Calif.; grandchildren, Shana, Micheller, Monte, Jason, John Melissa, Tiffany, Brandi and Michael; great-grandchildren, Quentin, Sophia, Sylis, Michael, Nikki, Dallas and Alexis; brother and wife, Frankie and Tiny Hernandez of Hayward, plus numerous other relatives. Graveside services were held on Saturday, May 24, in the afternoon at Westwood Cemetery. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Joseph. Ronald Alan Rixter, 54, died on Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Palo Verde Hospital in Blythe, Calif. He was born on Jan. 16, 1949, to Roy Jones and Annabell Rixter in Memphis, Tenn. He was married to Sylvia Marie Dugan on Nov. 13, 1993 in Reno. He was a correctional officer for 13 years working at Blythe Prison. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Dugan-Rixter of Tonopah, Ariz.; mother, Annabell Rixter, daughter, Marie Rixter of Texas and stepdaughter, Connie Dugan of Sacramento; stepsons, Michael Ellis of Sacramento and George Ellis of Nevada; sister, Avis Rixter of Memphis and brothers, Newin and Jerry Rixter of Memphis. Private memorial services and burial will take place at Fitzhenry Funeral Home.
Keith Hohlfeldt, 51, died at his home in Bunn, N.C., on Nov. 30, 2003. There will be a rememberance of his life, on June 14, 2003, at Our Savior Lutheran Church at 161 Aspen St., in Chester (across from the elementary school), at 2 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow at the Hamilton Branch Fire Station at A-13 Big Springs Road. Friends and relatives are invited to bring stories, songs, poems and other memories to share.
Pete Billings, 79, of Napa, died on April 30, 2003. Pete was born on Nov. 1, 1923, in Prescott, Ark., to James Samuel and Maggie Lona Billings. He was a long-time resident of Reno, Nev., and spent the last four months of his life in Napa. In 1944, Pete married Marie Van Pelt. They made their home in Chester where Pete worked with Collins Pine Company. In 1953, he moved to Reno, Nev. Pete owned and drove semi trucks for McCloud Trucking for many years. In 1962, he began his work with Western Energetics by leasing and running a service station. In 1965, he became the maintenance operation manager for Berry Hinkley Industries until his retirement in 1993. He enjoyed riding horses, motorcycles, flying planes and performing aerobatics. Pete is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Jeanne Title of Yountville; his son, Dan Billings of Fallbrook; his sisters, Marzelle Lasley of Arkansas and Ethel Lee Watts of Oklaholma; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Pete's life will be held at Mountain View Cemetery
in Reno, Nev., on Sunday, June 1, 2003, at 3 p.m. A memorial will be held in the Masonic Memorial Garden Chapel at 437 Stocker Ave., Reno, Nev., followed by a reception at the First Congregation Church on Sunnyside Drive. Shirley Viola Peterson, 78, died early Easter morning April 20, 2003, at Enloe Community Hospital located in Chico. Shirley was born to Grant and Nina Paul Hagerty on Sept. 8, 1924, in Dolan, S.D. She was a resident of Lake Almanor for 34 years, moving here from Woodland Hills, where she had resided from 1954-1969. She served her country during World War II as a member of the U. S. Coast Guard where she developed her cooking talents as a baker. She was an active member of the Lake Almanor, WH Chapter of the PEO Club where she chaired numerous committees. As a former member of the Seneca Health Care District's auxiliary she was instrumental in the organization of the annual Fun Night and was a member of the Hamilton Branch Firebells. She was an avid bridge player who enjoyed sewing and needlepoint along with cooking. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister. Shirley was survived by her husband of 56 years, Ray of Lake Almanor; children, Robert Peterson of Corning and Paulette Roof of Sacramento; sister Betty Seppi of Jackson; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. A celebration of Shirley's life was held on April 25, 2003 at the Chester Community United Methodist Church followed by interment in the Chester District Cemetery. Harold C. Loveless, 71, of Quincy died May 13, 2003, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Reno, Nev. Harold had lived in Quincy for the past 10 years, moving from Fresno. He was a retired electronics technician for the U.S. Navy. Harold is survived by his wife, Betty Loveless of Quincy; his son, Robert Carl Loveless; his daughter, Linda J. Buford of Lake Elsinore; his brother, Donald Loveless of Redding; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. No services are planned and inurnment will be private.
Hertha Margaret Kerber Simpson died in Napa on May 3, 2003. Hertha was born in Ponoka, Alberta, Canada on July 19, 1920. When she was 2 years old, she immigrated with her family to Oroville, where she attended school, became a citizen and met her husband. On September 6, 1937, she married Virgil Simpson. They spent their married life in Plumas County. She was employed by the Western Pacific Railroad. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, gold panning and anything else she could do with her husband. She also enjoyed playing cribbage. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Simpson. Hertha is survived by her daughter, Davney Gasser of Napa; and two grandchildren. Per her request, no services will be held.
Edwin Daniel Doerges died May 13, 2003, in Portola. Ed was born on Feb. 28, 1933, in Los Angeles. As a young child, he moved with his family to Merced. He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 19 and proudly served on the USS Battaan during the Korean Conflict. He was an expert welder and developed the process for welding stainless steel separation bolts while working for NASA. He went on to work for HyShear, MADCO and retired in 1995 as chief engineer from El Camino Hospital in San Jose, after 22 years of service. Following his retirement in 1995, he moved to Portola. He loved to fly and was a pilot for the flying doctors. As a ham radio operator, he assisted after the earthquakes in setting up repeaters. He was an inventor, camper, hiker, cook and racer. Ed was a member of the American Legion, Cal-Pine Elks and the USS Battaan Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert. Ed is survived by his wife, Norma of Portola; his sons, Edward and Eric Doerges; his daughter, Elizabeth Doerges; stepdaughters, Kristina Richards and Jessie Pleog; brothers, Richard and Fred Doerges; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
