Thelma Jean Cross, 73, of Reno, died July 21, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. Thelma was born to John M. Logan and Thelma Jean Pearce. She was born and raised in Alvarado and retired to Sparks, Nev. , in 1980. She was active in Fremont Baseball, CYO and was a volunteer for numerous organizations throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Philip James Cross. Thelma is survived by her sons, Michael Cross and Patrick James Cross; her daughters, Eleanor Jean O'Neill and Mary Rebecca deCesare; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Chester Howard Bauleke, 91, died July 17, 2003, at Foster Care Home in Medford, Ore. Chester was born to Henry and Annie Bauleke on March 15, 1912, in Blakeley, Minn. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 2001 from Portola. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Livermore Laboratories in Livermore. He enjoyed fishing and John Wayne movies. Chester is survived by his brother, Maynard Bauleke of Lawrence, Kan. No services are planned.
Donald Fred "Don" Vanetti, 69, died July 21, 2003, at his home in Loyalton, where he had been a life long resident. Don was born to Fred and Alice Marie Pasquetti Vanetti on Nov. 7, 1933, in Loyalton. He was a graduate of Loyalton High School. In 1965, he began a career as a heavy equipment operator when he operated his own logging operation, known within the family as "5D Logging." In 1987, he started working winters with Caltrans, retiring in May 2003. Don always had a building project going on in his yard. He enjoyed hunting and doing things for others. Don is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dottie; his daughters, Debbie Watkins of Orland, Darla McKinney of Loyalton and Dawna Vanetti of Loyalton; his brother, Guilio Vanetti of Vinton; his sisters, Rose Bucchioni of Sacramento, Virginia Ferguson of Standish, Laraine Harrison of LeGrande and Dorothy Pierce of Patterson; and two grandchildren. Services were held July 25, 2003, at Community Church of Loyalton, followed by burial in Mountain View Cemetery

Myron John Nelson, 90, died at his home on July 2, 2003. Myron was a native of San Jose, born on July 19, 1912, to John and Dora Henrietta Nelson. He was raised in San Jose, attended San Jose State College and went on to graduate in 1934 from UC-Berkeley with a degree in forestry. He was employeed for three years in Missouri on the Clark National Forest and then continued his career in California for 31 more years on the Trinity and Plumas national forests. He retired in 1967, after a 34-year career with the United States Forest Service. He was a member of the Quincy Community United Methodist Church for 47 years and served on the board of trustees and other committees. He also served as a Plumas County Museum board member for 25 years. He was a member of the Society of American Foresters for 67 years and a former member of the Toastmaster's Club of Weaverville. He was known as "Grumpy" and enjoyed Thursday luncheons as a member of the Quincy Lion's Club for many years and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Dedicated Humanitarian Services Award in 1993, at the age of 80. He loved the outdoors. Lunching with friends at the Senior Nutrition Center was a highlight of his week. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; two brothers; and one sister. Myron is survived by his three children, Kathryn Mitchell of Quincy, Robert Nelson of Auburn and Carolyn Welty of Woodland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A celebration of Myron's life will take place at the Quincy Community United Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 1 p.m. The family suggests any donations in Myron's memory be made to one of the following: Quincy Community United Methodist Church, the Plumas County Museum, the American Cancer Society, the Quincy Senior Nutrition Center, Plumas Community Hospice or any favorite charity of the donor's choice. Myron requested that no flowers be sent to his service.
MaryAnn Larson, 87, died July 18, 2003, at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento. MaryAnn was born to Frederick and Eva Grinstiener Gleich on May 6, 1916, in Dodge, N.D. She was a resident of Quincy from 1954 until 1998, at which time health complications forced her to relocate to Sacramento. Prior to living in Quincy, she had lived in Los Angeles. She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for 40 years. She had been employed by many physicians in the Quincy area prior to her employment with the Plumas Unified School District. She retired after 10 years with the district. She was a devout member of St. John's Catholic Church, where she was a member of their altar society. She was a longtime volunteer with the then Plumas County Fair along with volunteering at both the Community Assistance Network and the Plumas District Hospital's Thrift Store. She was a seamstress and enjoyed creating afghans, which she donated to the St. John's Christmas bazaar. She loved to read and especially enjoyed mysteries. She was an avid card player and took part in many of the local weekly card groups. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; three sisters; and five brothers. MaryAnn is survived by her daughters, Donna Lee Grosz of Evergreen, Colo., and Linda A. Galipeau of Rancho Cordova; her brothers, Fred Gleich of Bismark, N.D., and Floyd Gleich; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A Catholic Memorial Mass was celebrated July 24, 2003, at St. John's Catholic Church in Quincy. Interment will take place alongside her late husband in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery. Godfrey Warner Rodgers
Godfrey Warner Rodgers, 89, died July 23, 2003, at the Long Term Care Facility of Seneca Health Care District in Chester. Godfrey was born to Manuel and Ora Warner Rogers on Nov. 2, 1913. He was a Placer County native, and was raised and resided there until moving from Roseville to Westwood in 1965. He retired from the Aero Jet Corporation as a tool crib attendant after more than 12 years of service to the company. Godfrey was a Charter Member of the Westwood Seniors, an avid fisherman and enjoyed the art of fly tying. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clement. Godfrey is survived by his wife, Nina who is currently in a care facility in Redding; his sons, David of Sutherlin, Ore. and Richard of McKinleyville; his brother, Robert of Citrus Heights; his sister, Mary Garrison of Visalia; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of Godfrey's life took place at the graveside in the Westwood Cemetery

Lillian Mae Lindsay
Lillian Mae Gravert Lindsay died July 22, 2003, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. Lillian was born to Lela and Simon Kerns Bailey on July 31, 1906, in Troy, Idaho. She had resided in Plumas County from 1928-1964. She and her first husband, "Dutch" Gravert, owned and operated the former Pacific Crate and Lumber Company in Grays Flat. Following the sale of the company in 1954, they purchased the former Associated Truck Stop in East Quincy, operating it until Dutch's death in 1959. In 1964, she moved to Paradise and married George Lindsay. She resided in Paradise until moving to Elk Grove in 1998, to be closer to family. While in Paradise, she had been employed at Cypress Acres Convalescent Hospital as a CNA for many years. Lillian had been a longtime member of the Quincy Emblem Club and the Three Links Club of Quincy, as well as a life member of the Quincy Rebekah Lodge. While in the Quincy area, she attended the Quincy Community United Methodist Church. She enjoyed cooking. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Hans "Dutch" Gravert in 1959 and George Lindsay in 1978; one brother; and six sisters. Lillian is survived by her son, Robert Gravert of Sacramento; her daughter, Joan Becker of Yuba City; her sister, Violet Scott of Yakima, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. A celebration of Lillian's life was held at the graveside in the Old Quincy Cemetery

Betty Stienbrecher
Betty Stienbrecher died on July 20, 2003, at her home in Paradise. Betty was born in Oakland on Feb. 26, 1932. She married Vincent Tonelli in 1949. They had three children and lived in the Bay Area and Tracy. In 1964, Betty was remarried to Gene Stienbrecher. They moved to Sacramento and opened an auto parts store. In 1991, they retired. She was a member of Soroptomist International and served as president in 1975. She was also a member of the Greenville Sewing Club and the Ben Ali Hillbilly Clan. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, travelling and spending time with family and friends. Betty is survived by her husband, Gene Stienbrecher of Paradise; daughters, Jody Zabriskie of Thorton, Kathy Tonelli of Chico, Geney Holley of Rackerby and Carol Stienbrecher of Pollack Pines; sons, Dan Tonelli of Orland, Steve Stienbrecher of Pollack Pines and Mike Stienbrecher of San Rafael; brothers, Skip Wharton of Hollister, Walt Wharton of Pleasanton and Cliff Wharton of Oakland; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Leonard Howard Marsh, 63, died May 2, 2001, at his residence in Portola. He was born Feb. 17, 1938, in San Mateo, to John Anthony and Mary Elizabeth White Marsh. He had been a resident of Portola for the past 16 years, moving there from Half-Moon Bay. Leonard worked for the San Jose Fire Department for 17 years, retiring as a captain in 1979. He then worked in the maintenance department of Nurseryman's Exchange in Half Moon Bay until moving to Portola. He had served as the chairman of the Restore Lake Davis Coalition, and had been a member of the Calpine Elks Lodge No. 2432 of Portola and the Grizzly Lake Resort Improvement District. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Colleen Marsh, of Portola; sons, Dennis and Bill Marsh, both of Loyalton, and Greg Marsh of Portola; brother, Edward Marsh of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Barbara Seeman of Minden, Nev.; aunt, Florence Marsh of Santa Clara; and six grandchildren. Randolph "Randy" Arthur Johnson, 79, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the Long Term Care Unit of Indian Valley Health Care District in Greenville. He was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Winona, Minn. Randy had worked in the granite and marble industry for over 56 years. He learned his craft as a teenager in the quarries of Minnesota alongside his father. In 1951, he moved to California to work for Raymond Granite Company, and in 1954 moved to Santa Rosa, to work for North Bay Monuments, retiring in 1979. During this period of time, he operated Johnson Memorial, retailing monuments throughout the north Bay Area. He moved to Greenville in 1979 to help his son start up Lake Almanor Monuments Inc., where he continued to help train employees and advise with the construction of monuments until its sale in 1992. Randy was one of the last artisans to practice his trade with hand tools, and was able to construct granite and marble memorials from raw, quarried material. Some of his best craftsmanship can be viewed at St. Rose Catholic Church in Santa Rosa, where he was instrumental in the design and construction of the sanctuary and altar of the church. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a member of the Seabees and helped maintain the airstrip on Guadalcanal. Randy enjoyed the outdoors, where, as a young man, he ran his own trap line throughout the wilderness of Minnesota. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and panning for gold along the streams of the area. He was preceded in death by his wives, Marian in 1992, and Hazel in 1999; son, Randy in 1998; and one sister. Randy is survived by his daughters, Kathlene M. Fehrman of Quincy, and Mariann Johnson-Pedro of Santa Rosa; one grandson; three granddaughters; and numerous step-children. Graveside services were held Monday, April 30, in the Greenville District Cemetery. The family requests any donations in his memory be made to the Elder Angels, P.O. Box 470876, San Francisco, CA 94147, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing the financial abuse of the elderly throughout northern California.
