Vinita Lodeane Frazier, 80, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Northbrook Manor Care in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Memorial services will be held in Quincy at a later date. She was born in Mansfield, Mo., Dec. 12, 1920, and had been a Quincy resident for several years. Lodeane graduated from high school in 1938. She first worked in Lebanon, Mo., and later in Buffalo, Mo., where she met Hershel Frazier. They were married in 1941 in Sparks, Nev., and made their permanent home in Quincy. For several years, she worked at the Red and White in Quincy. She also worked at the Bank of America in Quincy. Three after her husband passed away, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and entered a nursing home in Quincy in November of 1993. In 1994, her brother, Robert, moved her to the nursing home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Onnie Hershel Frazier; and by her parents, Harold and Minnie Poole. Vinita is survived by her brother, Robert Pool of Marion, Iowa; and by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Betty Frazier; and numerous nieces and nephews in the Quincy area. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory be made to a local Alzheimer's Disease foundation, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mary Ann Young, 78, died Saturday morning, May 5, 2001, at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. She was born May 20, 1922, in rural Kansas. She moved to Westwood in 1951 from Axtell, Kan. Mary was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood. She had helped raise numerous foster children within the Westwood community. She was an accomplished weaver and seamstress, who also enjoyed the outdoors through fishing. Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ed, of Westwood; sons, Richard of Wenatchee, Wash., and Timothy of Chelan, Wash.; sister, Teresa Heideman of Seneca, Kan.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Visitations were held Tuesday morning, May 8. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church in Westwood. Burial took place in the Westwood Cemetery. The family requests any donations in her memory be made to the Altar Society of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 803, Greenville, CA 95947.
Frances "Frankie" Edna McCann died May 2, 2001, in a nursing home in Carmichael. She was born in Butterfly Valley Jan. 25, 1903, and resided in Quincy for most of her first fifty years. Frankie and her sister, Skip, were once proud owners, managers and cooks of Frankie and Skip's restaurant in the thirties, later known as Bob's, and currently operated under the name of The Courthouse Cafe. She also lived many years in Oroville, where her late husband E.L. "Mac" McCann was employed as a special investigator for the Western Pacific Railroad. Frankie is survived by her brother, Clarence Maxwell of Carmichael; five grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Norma, Carey and Gladys "Skip"; brothers, Watt, Lee and Jackie; three children, Robert Rich, Beverly Thomas and Vernon Rich; and grandson Richard Thomas. Services will be held May 26, at 1 p.m., at the Old Quincy Cemetery.
Robert Perry Rich, last surviving child of Francis "Frankie" McCann, died in a nursing home in Carmichael Dec. 5, 2000. He was born in Oakland, but was raised in Quincy. He graduated from Quincy High School. Robert was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Army after 29-1/2 years of service to his country. Bob also retired from the Sacramento Sheriff's Department after 11 years. He was a longtime member of the Shriner's Club of Sacramento. Robert is survived by his wife, Connie Rich of Carmichael; children, Bobby Rich of Denver, Colo., Jeff Rich of Carmichael, and Bonnie Quiming of Spanaway, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Beverly Thomas; and brother, Vernon Rich. Services will be held May 26, at 1 p.m., at the Old Quincy Cemetery.
Oliva Mae Pullen, 100, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at a Chico hospital. She was born Nov. 11, 1900, in Michigan to Mary and George Albertson and had been a former resident of Quincy. At age 12, she moved to Chico, where she attended Chico Normal School. She married Louis W. Thomas and the family lived in Quincy for many years. Following her husband's death in 1952, she lived in Alaska, and later moved to Chico, where she worked at Betty's Dress Shop. On March 29, 1958, she married William H. Pullen, and the couple lived in Trinidad, and later settled in Quincy. While in Quincy, Mrs. Pullen formed two clubs, the Second Horizon Club (sponsored by the Soroptimists) and the Breakfast Club. At age 80, Mrs. Pullen started doing oil paintings. Her husband preceded her in death, and one year ago she moved to Chico. Oliva was an active member of the Grange and Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter, Juanita Mullin of Capay; son, Louis H. Thomas of Quincy; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Vivian Ann Bartholomew, 77, a long-time resident of Lake Almanor, died Monday, April 23, 2001, of leukemia at Seneca Hospital in Chester. A lover of dogs, she was recognized locally for the long daily walks she and her husband of 57 years, Robert R. Bartholomew, took with their two labradors. She was active in the United Methodist Church in Chester, and also with Helping Hands, the Gleaners, and other local organizations. The daughter of the Kenneth Coleman Groover and the former Ann Marie Reinstadler, Mrs. Bartholomew was born and raised in San Francisco, where her father drove tiller on the Fire Department's hook and ladder trucks. Her brother and her uncle also were San Francisco firemen. She met her future husband, then a sailor, at the home of a mutual friend during the war. They were married on Christmas Day in 1943. He went into the fire service after the war. The couple moved to Sunnyvale in 1951, and was active in folk dancing for many years. They began vacationing annually at Lake Almanor in 1960, and often attended Feather River Folk Dance camps. They moved to Lake Almanor Peninsula in 1977, when Mr. Bartholomew retired from the Stanford University Fire Department and joined the Peninsula Fire Department. Continuing work she had done in Sunnyvale, Mrs. Bartholomew took a job in the cafeterias at Chester Elementary School and Chester High School. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Robert K. Bartholomew and one grandson of Boulder Creek; daughters, Karen Bartholomew of Menlo Park, and Breana Bartholomew of San Jose; her mother, Ann Amoroso, of Sebastopol; her brother, Kenneth Goover, of Belmont; and her sister, Jacqueline Goodrich, of Petaluma. Her father died in 1967. Services were held Friday, April 27, at the United Methodist Church in Chester. Burial will be in the Chester Cemetery. Robert Frederick Dobel, 85, died April 18, 2001. He was born May 13, 1915, in New York. He grew up in San Francisco and moved to Foster City in 1972. Robert spent many happy years at the family ranch in Taylorsville, where he enjoyed working with and entertaining his many friends in the Indian Valley area.
Bob retired from American President Lines in 1982 as a chief engineer with the maritime service after sailing 33 years during the 1930-80s.
He also worked with Scott Company for 22 years.
In the early years, he was a stationary engineer for Sutro Bath's in San Francisco.
Bob was a Mason since 1945, member of MEBA, SIRS San Mateo No. 1, and F.C. 55 Plus Club.
He loved his family, playing cards, working puzzles, music and was an avid sportsman.
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen Dobel; children, Linda Pearson of Fremont, Robbin Dobel of San Jose, Robert Dobel of Redwood City, and Mark Dobel of Castro Valley; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held May 12, the weekend of his 86th birthday.
Frances Patricia Simon Lentine, 75, died April 22, 2001, at Sierra Valley District Hospital in Loyalton. She was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Pitcairn, Pa. Frances had moved to Graeagle in 1998 with her husband, Frank. She worked as a receptionist at Great Western Savings and Loan in Santa Rosa for 23 years, retiring in 1991. They moved to Sparks, Nev., for a few years before settling in Graeagle. Frances is survived by her husband of 55 years, Frank, of Graeagle; children, Timothy Lentine of Hanover, N.H., and Sandy Ruliffson of Moraga; and two grandchildren. Visitation took place April 26, with a Rosary taking place at 7 p.m. at the Manni Funeral Home in Portola. A Funeral Mass took place April 27, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Portola. Burial took place in Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery, Fernley, Nev.
Randolph Arthur "Randy" Johnson, Sr., 79, died April 22, 2001, at Indian Valley Hospital in Greenville.
He was born Feb. 16, 1922, in Winona, Minn., and had resided in Greenville for many years. Randy owned and operated Lake Almanor Monuments for 45 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Johnson; wife, Hazel Johnson, in 1999; and son, Randy Johnson, Jr., in 1998.
Randy is survived by his daughters, Kathy Fehrman of Quincy, and Mariann Pedro of Santa Rosa; several grandchildren; and numerous step-children. Graveside funeral services were held April 30, in the Greenville Cemetery.
Larry Edward Rentfrow, 55, died on Aug. 22, 2003 at his residence in Westwood. He had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 18 years. He was born in Vallejo, Calif. on May 22, 1948. He was a correctional officer for 26 years, retiring from his career at CCC. He loved music and was especially talented in whistling. He was a past member of the Lassen County Arts Council, past chairman of the Westwood Community Services District Board. He also enjoyed camping. He is survived by daughters, Robin Collette Ketchum of Davis, Calif. and Pamela Jean Montgomery of Vancouver, Wash.; brother, Bob of Westwood and six grandchildren. No services are planned at this time.
