Wallace "Nat" Haws, 88, died on Aug. 25, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. He was a resident of Lassen County for the past 50 years. He was born in Clay Center, Kan. on June 5, 1915 and owned a Standard Oil Distributorship for many years, he also served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He loved to fish, hunt and was a past member of the Elks Lodge. He attended Lassen College and played in four sports: baseball, basketball, track and football. He graduated with a class of six. He is survived by his grandson Robert of Fremont, Calif. and nephew, Ken Haws of Susanville. Graveside services for him were held on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Lassen Cemetery.
Wayne S. Grover, 90, died on Aug. 19, 2003, in Bluffdale, Utah. He was born in Parker, Idaho on may 10, 1913. He came to California in 1937 to work at the Red River Lumber Company in Westwood. He owned and operated Grovers Masonry from 1948-1978 in Susanville. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a bishop and member of the high council and as stake patriarch. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fannie of Bluffdale, Utah; sons, Bill Grover of Lodi, Calif., Ron Grover of Ellensburg, Wash., Dave Grover of Janesville and Stan Grover of Susanville; daughters, Phylis Adams of Bluffdale, Utah and Kay Wiley of Stephenville, Texas.; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Services were held in Bluffdale, Utah on Aug. 23 at the LDS church.
Juanita Gomez Proctor, 79, died at the Susanville Nursing and Rehab Center on Aug. 25, 2003. She was born on July 12, 1924 in Lovelock, Nev. and was a Lassen County resident off and on since 1926, including the last 12 years. She had previously lived in Carson City, Nev. Before her retirement she was employed as an assembler with Beckman Instruments for 30 years. She was also a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by brother, Joseph Gomez and sister, Rose Gomez Davis. She is survived by her son, Richard A. Proctor of Fremont, Calif.; brother, Fabian J. Gomez of Susanville; one grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Phyllis Muriel Bollman (Nana), 83 of Satellite Beach, Fla. died Sunday Aug. 17, 2003. She was born in La Grand, Ore., to Opal and Archie Meade on Jan. 18, 1920. She married Fred Bollman on July 19, 1938. They lived in various logging towns in California where he owned his own logging company. She was a devoted wife and mother to their two children Aneena and Fred (Sonny) until he retired in 1984. They then traveled the United States in an R. V. for many years, which they very much enjoyed. Phyllis and Fred then moved to Satellite Beach Florida in the early 90s, following their daughter. Bollman was a kind, loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, extended family member. She was a friend to many. She is survived by her husband Fred of 65 years; daughter, Aneena Bollman King and son-in-law Jerry King with their families; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial Services were held on Friday Aug. 22. Memorial donations can be made to the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer at 12 East Avenue A, Melbourne, FL.
Shirley Diane Bennett, 62, died on Saturday evening Aug. 30, from an apparent heart attack while bowling in Chester. Born Shirley Diane Williams on Dec. 20, 1940 to Herman and Lois (Pipken) Williams in Bakersfield Calif. She was raised in Bakersfield graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1958. She married Robert "Bob" Bennett in July, 1960 and moved to Chico, Calif. for a short period of time prior to settling in Westwood, in 1965. She was a devoted homemaker who's passion was that of caring for her family. She was a talented seamstress who took great pride in stitching clothes for the family. She had just recently taken her talents to another level, opening Sew What? a sewing and alterations shop in Westwood Calif. She was a devoted member of the Westwood Calvary Chapel where she was serving as their bulletin editor and helping with their women's ministries program. She was also active with the Westwood Boosters and the Westwood library Group. She enjoyed the outdoors through camping and fishing. Although Shirley was not a formal member of a number of organizations she was always there to help. She contributed her cooking talents to the Westwood Rotary, helped out during the Old Timers Picnic for many years, and was instrumental in establishing the Westwood Rotary monthly pancake breakfast for the Breakfast for Kids Program and worked with her church to serve breakfast to the summer school students of Westwood. Shirley is survived by her loving and caring family to include her husband of the past 43 years Robert "Bob" Bennett of Westwood, children Charles "Chuck" Bennett of Westwood, David F. Bennett of Coos Bay, Ore. and Debra "Dawn" Anders of Burney Calif., brother Jim Williams of Bakersfield, Calif., sisters Barbara West of Bakersfield, Calif. and Betty Gobin of Wenatchee, Wash. and grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy Calif. a celebration of Shirley's life took place on Thursday Sept. 4 at the Westwood Community Center, Westwood. Suzanne "Suzie" Elmore, 73, died at the Long Term Care Unit of Seneca Health Care District early Friday morning, August 29, following her courageous battle with cancer for the past year and a half. Born Suzanne Summers on Nov. 8, 1929 in Long Beach, Calif. to William and Violet (Elcock) Summers, she was raised and continued to reside in the Long Beach area until moving to Lake Almanor West 25 years ago. She is a 1946 graduate of Long Beach Poly Technic High School and went on to attend Long Beach City College. She had served as the office manager for the Boy Scouts of America in Long Beach retiring after ten years of service to the organization. She was a longtime member of the Lake Almanor, Calif., WH Chapter of the PEO Club, gained pleasure from traveling the local Street Rod circuit with her husband, and enjoyed an occasional game of golf. She had an outgoing and caring personality and will be missed by her family, many friends and neighbors. She was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. She is survived by her loving husband Lloyd of the Lake Almanor West Shore whom she married March 20, 1949 in Los Angeles, son Dr. Michael Elmore of Huntington Beach, Calif., daughter Martha DelRe of Long Beach, Calif., brother William Summers of Upland, Calif., her grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory located in Quincy, Calif. a celebration of life was held on Sept. 3, 2003 at the Chester Church of Christ. Clyde Merton, 94, died on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003 in Redding. He was born in Oogalah, Okla. in 1909 and moved to Lassen County at an early age. He graduated from CSU, Chico and then served many years as a teacher, principal (Susanville and Bieber) and Lassen County Assisant Superintendent of Schools. He also worked as an assistant probation officer. He was a member of the Lassen Promenaders, Lassen Rockhounds, Susanville Lions Club and the Community Evangelical Free Church. When he moved to Redding eight years ago, he became a member of the neighborhood church. He is survived by his wife, Lola of Redding; sisters Edith McGowan of Carson City, Ruth of Ukiah and Mary of San Leandro. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Anderson Chapel in Anderson. Burial was at Janesville Cemetery.
Thomas Edward McCarthy, 75, died with his family at his side Wednesday afternoon Sept. 3, 2003 in Chester following a courageous year long battle with cancer. Born Feb. 18, 1928 to Iowa natives Francis and Lenore McCarthy in Casper, Wyo., at the age of three he and his family moved to Southern California. Following his graduation from high school he went on to honorably serve his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps at the conclusion of World War II. He continued to serve his country as a member of the United States Department of Justice retiring in 1992 after a loyal and dedicated career to the department as an electrician. He has been a resident of the Lake Almanor area for four years, moving here from Chico. He was a devout member of the Catholic faith and will be remembered in the parishes he attended for his kindness, dependability and easy going personality. He was an avid fisherman and a talented pinochle player. This decent man will be sorely missed by many. He is preceded in death by his brother Patrick. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Patricia; son, Paul; daughter, Marilyn Moredock; parents Frank and Lenore McCarthy, one granddaughter, and brothers, John and Michael. A Mass of Christian Burial was be celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Chester. Interment will follow in the Chester District Cemetery. Valentina V. Trumbull, 85, died on Sept. 5, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born in Russia on June 1, 1918, and moved to China during the 1920s. In the 1940s she came to Janesville. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing, but most of all she enjoyed being a mom and homemaker. At least once a month she would get on a bus with her friends bound for Reno to enjoy the gambling and socializing. She also liked spending time at the Senior Citizens Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Casper, in 1996. She is survived by her sons, Bob of Yreka, Calif., Ralph of Modesto, Calif. and Mike of Susanville; daughters, Cynthia Trumbull of Long Beach, Calif. and Kathy Colmen of Modesto; brother, Slava Vshinkina of Australia and one sister, Tanya Vshinkina of Australia, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. There will be graveside service at 1 p.m. on Sept. 27 at Janesville Cemetery. A celebration of life is to follow at the Senior Citizens Center on Sunkist Drive in Susanville.
Ardis E. Doyle, 84, died on Sept. 2, 2003. She was born on June 17, 1919 in San Francisco and moved to Sacramento in 1956. She was the granddaughter of John and Alberta Christie (Christie campground, Eagle Lake.) She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest "Dick" Doyle. She is survived by daugther, Sharon D. Yuke of Sacramento; son, Dustin Doyle of Roseville; five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews including Carol and John Doyle and Ken Doyle. Memorial services were held at East Lawn Mortuary in Sacramento on Sept. 13. Thea D. Wolf, 61, died on Sept. 6, 2003 at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 30, 1941 in East Liverpool, Ohio. She worked as a pharmacy clerk for many years at the Herlong Army Depot in Lassen County. She is survived by her husband, Sid Wolf of Fernley, Nev.; son, Roger Wolf of Reno; daughters, Mary Esquivel of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Cassie Chausse of Carson City, Nev.; brothers, Theodore and Dean Flint of Reno; sister, Ruth Mullens of Idaho and nine grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Thursday, Sept. 11 in Reno. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
Ruth Evelyn Affleck-Soto died Monday, April 23, 2001. She was born September 18, 1919, in Montana and was a resident of the Palos Verdes peninsula in southern California since 1955. She was a member of the Teamster's Union, where she was a switchboard operator. She had a long career in the medical field as a receptionist and doctor's assistant in the 1960s, before eventually retiring as an industrial insurance secretary at Bay Shores Medical Group of Redondo Beach in 1993. Ruth enjoyed sewing, crochet and travel. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of San Pedro. She was preceded in death by three husbands, C. M. Higbee in 1981, Allan Affleck in 1994 and Manuel Soto in 1995. Ruth is survived by her sons, Richard Affleck of Vallejo, and Clarence Higbee, Jr. of San Diego; daughters, Deanna McLaughlin of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Alicia Higbee of Greenville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitations were held Thursday, April 26, and the funeral service was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27. Both took place at McNerney's Mortuary Chapel in San Pedro. Burial followed at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.
