Susan W. Manning, 87, a lifelong resident of Portola, died Jan. 22, 2003, in Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. She had retired from working for many years as a clerk for Ayoob's Department Store in Portola. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, Edward Winfree. Susan is survived by her sister Beth Lusar; two nieces; and their families, all of Sacramento. Per her request, no services were held.
Longtime Quincy resident Jack McLean died Feb. 12, 2003, of natural causes. Jack was born July 10, 1929 to Ester and Robert McLean, in Brawley. He came to Plumas County in 1949 on his motorcycle and liked the area so much that he decided to stay. He worked in the logging industry. From 1951 to 1953, he served in the Army, where he was trained as a paratrooper. On Sept. 12, 1953, he married Shirley Vander Linder of Big Rapids, Mich., in the Quincy Methodist Church. He was the sole proprieter of McLean's Plumbing from 1958 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of Quincy Community Methodist Church, Quincy Lion's Club, Native Sons of the Golden West and Quincy Sports Shooters. Hewas an avid outdoorsman. Jack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley; daughters Laurie McGreehan, Cindy Steffen, and Bonnie Fitzgerald; and nine grandchildren. Private inurnment will be in the Quincy Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the Quincy Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
Clinton Lyman Buck, 80, of Berry Creek died Jan. 30, 2003. Clinton was born June 5, 1922, to Raymond and Irene Buck in Gridley. He worked in the lumber industry for Boise Cascade for 50 years. During the late '40s and early '50s he also worked for the Meadow Valley Lumber Company. He was a member of the Third Ward Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the Berry Creek Grange. He was an avid reader, particularly of Butte County history. He loved to tinker in his shop, build things, remodel houses and buy and sell property. He enjoyed planting fruit trees, grafting trees and would teach anyone who wanted to learn. He also enjoyed making cards on his computer, sending them to people and e-mailing friends and family. Clinton is survived by his wife of 31 years, Joyce Buck; his three sons, Leon Buck of Arizona, Kenneth Buck of Ohio and Allan Buck of Gridley; his brothers, Clarence Buck of Quincy and Clinton's twin, Quinton Buck of Brownsville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Feb. 5, 2003, at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Hope Bible Conference, P.O. Box 240, Forbestown, CA 95941.
Rex Ellis Norton, 65, died with his wife at his side on Feb. 12, 2003, at Plumas District Hospital in Quincy. Rex was born July 23, 1937, in Farmington, Minn., to Ralph and Arlene Jones Norton. He was a 1955 graduate of Byron High School in Byron, Minn. He had been a resident of Quincy for the past 10 years, moving from San Jose, where he had previously resided for 20 years. He retired from the IBM Corporation as a tool and die manufacturer after 34 years of service to the company. He was an active member of the Quincy Community United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee. He was an avid recreational-vehicle enthusiast, enjoyed hunting, fishing and the game of golf. He was a pianist, and took pleasure in playing and listening to music. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Arlene Jones Norton; and his sister, Dona Lindgren. Rex is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Quincy; his sons, Jeffrey Norton of Vacaville and Brian Norton of Liberty Hill, Texas; his sisters, Cris DeBruychere of Eau Claire, Wis., Marlys Maki of Deer River, Minn.; and four grandchildren. Following a private family visitation and cremation, a celebration of his life took place on Feb. 15, 2003, at the Quincy Community Methodist Church. Dennis Lee Cooper, 57, of Mesa, Ariz. died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz. He is survived by sister, Sherry and brother-in-law Herman Doty of Mesa. No services are planned.
Maryellen Baumiller, 73, died on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. She was born on July 19, 1929, in Manden, N.D. and was a resident of Lassen County, moving here from Santa Ana in 1980. Baumiller had been a homemaker her entire adult life and had also been a member of the Catholic church. She had also volunteered countless hours in the Santa Ana School District. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen, in 1990; brothers, Fred, Henry and Leonard and sisters, Adelaide and Nelly. She is survived by sons, Wayne Allen Baumiller and wife, Kristina of Susanville and James Lee Baumiller and wife Laurie of Blythe, Calif.; daughter, Rosemarie Harrington and husband Matt of Wyoming and brother, Francis Schmidt of Forsyth, Mont. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held at the Colonial Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, Feb. 13. Interment followed at the Diamond Crest Cemetery. The family requests that any donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
Hazel B. Hampton, 55, of Reno, Nev., died Jan. 13, 2002, at home, of cancer. She was born July 21, 1946, in Brady, Texas. Her family moved to Pecos and she graduated from Pecos High School in 1964. She attended the University of Texas, where she played the saxophone in the Texas Longhorn Band for five years. She graduated in 1970 at the Austin Texas Campus for UTNB nursing school at Galveston with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She worked at a hospital in Galveston, Texas, until June 1971, when she took a vacation to Reno. There, she met her husband, Ed, on a blind date. They married that same week, and were married for 30 years. In 1971, she went to work at Washoe Medical Center. She was the flight nurse for infants, throughout California and Nevada, on care flights to the infant intensive care unit. From 1974-1989 she worked for various state agencies. She also worked for the Rehabilitation Hospital of Nevada and for Saint Mary's Health First. She received a master of science degree in nursing from the University of Nevada. Hampton was a member of the Nevada Nurses Association Board of Directors; Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living Board of Directors; National Association of Orthopedic Nurses; Association of Rehabilitation Nurses; a member of the board of directors and group facilitator of the Head Injury Support Group; a charter member of Sigma Theta Tau; International Honor Society for Nurses; a former president of the Sierra Nevada Continuity of Care Association; Saint Mary's Parish Nurse Program and Orvis School of Nursing nurse student program. She enjoyed motorcycle racing and working as pit crew for her husband, working at the gold claim, camping, long walks in the Sierra woods, feeding her Shamu at Willow Creek, playing cards with friends, watching the Saints win at football and traveling to unique places. In 1978, Hazel was one of "Jerry Lewis' Big Kids." She had been diagnosed with polymyostis, a muscular disease. After six months in the Children's Hospital in San Francisco, she started plasmaheresis, a new type of treatment that saved her life. She was the first patient to recover from this disease. Due to the research technique that was developed by Hazel and Dr. Peter Dau, others have benefitted. Hampton is survived by her husband of 30 years, Edmund Hampton, of Reno, Nev.; and brother, Robert Burnette of Reno. A memorial service was held at Walton's Sierra Chapel, Friday, Jan. 18, in Reno. Patricia Marjorie Collom, 76, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2002, at Indian Valley District Hospital in Greenville. Born in Los Angeles Sept. 3, 1925, she had just recently moved to Greenville. Collom was aised in Burlingame, and was a 1943 graduate of Burlingame High School. She spent most of her life around that city. Collom retired from the VA Medical Center after 10 years as a statistical assistant. Prior to starting her family, she had been employed as a stewardess for Pan American Airlines. A longtime member of the San Andreas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former High Priestess of the Ladies Oriental Shrine, she was an accomplished musician, playing the violin and piano since her early childhood. Collom is survived by her sons, Jess Reames, of Belmont, and Kirk Reames, of Reno, Nev.; daughter, Rhonda Kiper, of Greenville; brother, Mel Collom, of Sisters, Ore.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, a celebration of Collom's life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place in Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo. Nellie Laverne Erickson, 83, died Thursday morning, Jan. 17, 2002, at her Quincy residence. Born Sept. 29, 1918, in Leavenworth, Wash., she had been a Quincy resident for 64 years, moving there in 1936 from Leavenworth. Erickson was a devoted homemaker, who gained great pleasure from spending time with her family in the outdoors. She was an avid angler, who also enjoyed hunting, and was a former member of the Reno Moose Lodge. She was preceded in death by daughters, Mary, in 1991, Opal, in 1968, and Beverly Jean, at birth; and three brothers. Erickson is survived by her daughters, Zenda Beail, of Quincy, Helen Turner, of Yakima, Wash., and Darlene Lowery, of Maxey, Wash.; sister, Betty Eiszele, of Quincy; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, at Erickson's request, no services will be held. An opportunity to leave a personal memorial tribute is available online at . Joseph Louis Porawski, 76, of Portola, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center, in Reno, Nev. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Porawski, of Portola; and son, Edward Porawski, of Reno. A celebration of Porawski's life will be held Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Portola at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Porawski's memory be made to Eastern Plumas Home Health Care.
Beth Davie Wynn, 70, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at her home in Fresno, Calif. She was born and raised in Susanville and attended local schools. She moved to Fresno, in 1958. She was preceded in death by her parents Lester and Dorotha Davie and brother Alton Davie, all of Susanville. She is survived by her husband Vernon Wynn of Fresno; son, Mitchell Dunshee of Fresno, and daughter Leslie Rowe of Littleton, Colo.; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held Jan. 5 in Fresno.
Dorma Lee Bailey, 79, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, in Tulsa, Okla. She was born June 29, 1922, in Pryor, Okla., to Claude and Sally Litterell. She had been a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Don Bailey on May 29, 1998. They had lived in Susanville from the early 1960s until his retirement in approximately 1980. He had been the pastor of the Gospel Tabernacle in Susanville. She is survived by her son, Ron Vause of Sand Springs; her step-daughter, Peggy Ames of Tulsa; bothers, Charles Litterell of Tulsa, Bobby Gene Litterell of Sand Springs and James Kyle Litterell of Claremore; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held Friday, Jan. 18, at Calvary Temple Assembly of God in Tulsa. In lieu of flowers friends may donate to American Cancer Society or Crossroads Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Mobley-Dodson Funeral Service.
