Donald David Dowden, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at the St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nev. He was born in Eagleville, Calif., Nov. 13, 1918, and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 78 years. He had been employed by the California Division of Forestry as a firefighting foreman for 18 years. He had also driven logging trucks for both Collins Pine, and the Fruit Growers Association; and had retired from the Sierra Army Depot as a forklift operator and ammunitions handler in 1980. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was an avid league bowler, and enjoyed bowling with the senior citizens on Wednesdays. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Vida of Susanville; sons, David Lyle Dowden of Susanville, Chester Daniel Dowden of Roseburg, Ore., and Darrell Jay Dowden Sr. of Standish; daughter, Martha Lynn Ausmus of Susanville; sister, Dorthy G. Sears of Lakewood, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nannie Donnelly; and brother, Johnnie Dowden. Memorial services are pending at this time. The family would appreciate any donations be made to the American Heart Association.
Charles William McCollam, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at his home in Westwood, Calif. He was born in Ranier, Ore., Aug. 8, 1917, and had been a Lassen County resident for 46 years. McCollam had been a timber faller for B&B Logging for 44 years, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of World War II, and a member of the Westwood VF.. He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Amos of Westwood, Linda Mellen of Woodburn, Ore., and Margaret Bigalow of Westwood; step-daughters, JoAnne Garrett of La., Arlene Hollen of Oroville, and Patty Oxley of Palermo, Calif.; and step-sons, Jack Hartley of Vancouver, Wash., Robert Hartley of Vancouver, and Gene Hartley of Portland, Ore. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services are scheduled for the first week in July, and will be announced at a later date.
Albert Richard Rimbault, 72, died Jan. 22, 2002, at his home in Graeagle. He was born June 21, 1929, in Oakland, to Albert and Iva Carrier Rimbault. Rimbault lived in Concord for many years, before moving to Graeagle about a year ago. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952. He owned Delta Masonry, retiring in 1994. An avid golfer, Rimbault was also a baseball coach for the junior league. Survivors include his wife, Esther, of Graeagle; sons, Marc, of Hansville, Wash., Kevin, of Hendersonville, N.C., and Derek, of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren. No services are planned; there will be a private family inurnment. Memorial donations in Rimbault's name may be made to Tahoe Forest Hospice, P.O. Box 759, Truckee, CA 96160.
Harry Edward Dailey Sr., 74, a former Quincy resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. Dailey was born July 13, 1927, in Beach, N.D., the son of Edward and Florence (Percell) Dailey. He received his education in Quincy, living there until 1967 when he moved to Forest Grove, Ore. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 22, 1945 to Feb. 28, 1947. He married Lea Ola Jennings Sept. 18, 1970, in Vancouver, Wash. Dailey had worked as a cabinet maker. The family lived in Banks, Ore., until he retired from Rodgers Instruments LLC in 1989. He and his wife then spent 12 years traveling the U.S. with their fifth-wheel trailer. Dailey was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, jokes and taking care of his family. Dailey was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley Gonza; and granddaughter, Sommer Dailey. Survivors include his wife, Lea Ola Dailey, of Prineville, Ore.; sons, Frank Harer, of Bremeton, Wash., Harry "Skip" Dailey, of Quincy, Michael Dailey, of Salem, Ore., Paul Dailey, of Fremont, Bill Inman, of Prineville, Ore., and Guy Dailey, of Forest Grove, Ore.; daughters, Sher Patton, of Forest Grove, Ore., Helen Hisaw, of Hillsboro, Ore., Laurie Horlacher, of Banks, Ore., Linda Fulcher, of Forest Grove, Ore., and Rebecca Gilman, of Prineville, Ore.; sisters Thelma Lardy of Cornielius, Ore., Doris Tadlock, of Quincy, and Helen Walker, of Sacramento; 31 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at the Prineville Funeral Home, followed by cremation. The family suggests that memorial contributions in Dailey's memory be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice, 1201 NE Elm St., Prineville, OR 97754.
Margaret Eleanor Mitchell died Jan. 3, 2002, just short of her 90th birthday. She and her husband, James, were residents of the Portola/Graeagle area from the early '70s to the early '90. They then moved to Clovis to be near her daughter, Barbara. Mitchell, a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs, was affiliated with the Mesa, Ariz., Portola and Fresno lodges. A retired teacher of 30-plus years, Mitchell taught in the Territory of Hawaii and both southern and central California. She had a wide variety of interests, including reading, arts and crafts, good conversation and traveling to almost every continent. Mitchell was predeceased by her husband, James. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Stewart, of Fresno, and Catherine Bergmann, of Walnut Creek; and four grandsons.
Lyle N. Hoag Sr., 94, died peacefully in Carmichael Jan. 25, 2002. He was born in Missouri in 1907 and was raised and schooled in northern Idaho. Hoag and his wife, Esther, moved to Los Angeles in 1928. He started as a teller at Security Pacific Bank (now Bank of America), and retired in 1972 as a vice president of the bank. Hoag had an enduring interest in art, architecture, gardening and world travel. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Esther Hoag, of Carmichael; sons, Charles, of Quincy, and Lyle Jr., of Fair Oaks, and their families, including 18 great-grandchildren. According to Hoag's wishes, no services are being held. His ashes will be scattered in a redwood grove.
Robert Ryan Mariscal, 33, of Fremont, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002. He was born March 25, 1968, in England.
Mariscal attended Quincy High School from 1982-1985. He worked in manufacturing and production for the Old California Sourdough Pizza Company, and lived in Fremont for the past 12 years. Mariscal enjoyed cooking, fishing, shopping and making people laugh. He was a member of Creech Self Defense. Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Christine Mariscal, of Fremont; daughter, Tiffany A. Mariscal, of Fremont; son, Joseph A. Mariscal, of Fremont; stepmother, Jane Mariscal, and father, Reggie Mariscal, of Quincy; sister, Sonya Mariscal, of Modesto; brother, Brian Mariscal, of Panama City Beach, Fla.; grandfather, John Mariscal, of Merced; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at Berge-Pappas-Smith Chapel of the Angels, in Fremont. Donations in Mariscal's memory may be made to MPI, Inc., 3012 Summit St., Oakland, CA 94609.
Mildred Pauline Ramsey, 81, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in a Medford, Ore., hospital following a sudden illness. She was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Okemah, Okla., to James Carl and Margarette LeDou. Her family came to Susanville in 1928 when she was a young child, and a couple years later her father died in an accident at the Fruit Growers Supply Co. She grew up in Susanville and attended the local schools. On Feb. 19, 1940, she married James Albert Ramsey and a few years later they moved to Lakeview, Ore., where they raised their daughters. She was a clerk at the Safeway store there for several years. Years later after she retired from the work force they moved to Eagle Lake close to the Spaulding community, resided there for a few years finally moving to Rouge River to be near their daughters. She was a member of the baptist church, the Eastern Star and the Sweet Adelines. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James Albert Ramsey; two daughters, Carolyn Murphy of Rouge River, and Connie Smith of Lakeview, Ore.; sister, Hazel Hamzy of Chico, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Marva LeDou, of Susanville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Barney and Thad LeDou and a sister, Lucille Harger. A memorial service is planned for a later date in Rouge River. In lieu of flowers her family suggests making a donation to your favorite charity in her behalf.
Jean Erb, 79, died at the Lassen Community Hospital in Susanville. She was born in Hay Springs, Neb., on March 13, 1922, and moved to Lassen County at the age of 43. Erby was the Co-owner of the A & W Restaurant for 20 years with her husband and Ken Erb. She was past president of the Soroptimist Club actively involved with the Lassen Community Hospital Auxiliary. She loved to garden and sew but her favorite pastime was her grandchildren and family. She is survived by her husband, Ken; sons Kim and David; brother, Robert Hanson; sisters, Helene Peters, Mabel Olson, Clara Dundom, Dorthea Zenovich, Maryann Martin, and Karla Ripp; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Walton's Colonial Chapel. There will be a private graveside service at Diamond Crest Cemetery. The family has asked that all donations be made to the Lassen Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Marguerite Jordan McKnight, 99, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. A native of Milford, Calif., she was born to Ernest A. and Margaret Ellen (Doyle) Jordan on April 25, 1902. She had been a resident of Reno, for the past 34 years, coming from Oakland, Calif. She had been retired from general office work for several years. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, American Association of Retired Persons, National Insurance Women, and the National and International Wildlife Societies. She is survived by daughter, Margery McKnight Carr; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be a private family graveside blessing in Janesville.
Robin Ellen McCain, 44, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, in Merced, Calif.
She was born in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 1958.
She lived in Lassen County for many years before moving to Merced.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Flowers of Wash.; sister, Bobbie Manka of Ill.; one niece and one nephew of Ill.
Services were held Thursday, Jan. 17, at the First Church of God in Merced.
Robert Joseph Capehart, 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center. A native of Lodi, Calif., he was born Oct. 11, 1941, to Thomas Carl and Faye (Wadley) Capehart. He is survived by wife, Ingrid; sons, John and Charles; brother, Thomas Carl, Jr.; sister, Frances Schultz; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Lazy 5 Regional Park, Pyramid Lake Highway Sparks, Nev. Private cremation under the direction of Walton's Sparks Funeral Home.
