Diana Davis Farano, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, after a short illness in San Bruno, Calif. She is survived by husband, Sam Farano; daughters, Candi Fyfe and Michele Magni; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Beulah Davis, longtime residents of Susanville. No services at family's request. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to your favorite charity in Diana's name.
M.L. "Lefty" Gardner, 69, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev. He was born Feb. 18, 1932, in Spavinaw, Okla., then his family moved to Northern California and ended up in Susanville 38 years ago. He worked for the Department of Corrections for 30 years and was a member of the CCPOA, CSEA and achieved the rank of sergeant He was actively involved with his family in hunting, fishing, Boy Scouts, Little League, Babe Ruth, Pop Warner football ,as well as the football programs at Lassen and Westwood High. When he retirement he became active with the Sam's Travel Club. He is survived by his wife, Betty; sons, James of Orangeville and Joe of Westwood; daughter Kathy Spitsen of Susanville and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 3, at the first Southern Baptist Church 1545 Cornell St., in Susanville. Burial will be Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Roseburg Memorial Gardens in Roseburg, Ore.
Arthur John Thomas Sr., 83, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Lassen Community Hospital Annex in Susanville, Calif. He was born March 1, 1918, in Sierra City, Calif., and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 50 years. He retired from the Sierra Army Depot at Herlong, Calif, in Nov. 1980, after 28 years. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, AARP; life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2301 of Susanville; NARFE; and a past member of the Odd Fellow's Lodge. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving in Japan. He was active in the Gleaner's Program and he coached Little League for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Alice Brown. He is survived by sons, Arthur Jr., of Klamath Falls, Ore., Arden of Payallup, Wash.; daughters, Sue Ann Peay of Quincy, Calif., and Alice Larnida Moore of Milford, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Feb. 4, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with interment following at the Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Frances (Pat) Lenora Graves Sharp, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Redding Medical Center in Redding, Calif. She was born Dec. 21, 1931, in Inglewood, Calif., to Alvin and Bernice Setterburg. She attended local school there and graduated from Inglewood High School in 1949. She married Orville Graves in 1954 and continued to live in the LA area. In 1960 they moved to Trinity County where they purchased and operated the Junction City Store. They moved to Areata, Calif., in 1964, owning and operating Frank's Market and Greenview Market. In 1985, they moved back to Trinity County to retire in the Douglas City area. Shortly after the death of her husband Orville in 1986, she was a volunteer waitress at the Golden Age Center in Weaverville, Calif. This was the beginning of a 13-year senior advocate career. Sharp was elected to the Weaverville Golden Age Center Board of Directors and served as treasurer. Next position was service on the Trinity County Commission on Aging and an appointment to the PSA2 Advisory Council. While serving the PSA2 she was appointed to the California senior legislature as an assembly person. She proved successful and was elected Senator. She rose to the position of chairman of the executive board, the ruling body of the CSL. She also served on the Executive Board of PSA2 and was a past chair of that organization. She also was appointed to numerous Trinity County boards and commissions and served them faithfully. She married Bill Sharp on June 3, 1989, and enjoyed 11 years of working together for the benefit of the senior population. She is survived by husband, Bill; daughters, Irene Barney and Jeanette Johnson of Eureka, Calif.; step-children, Carol and Ken Dunning of Ferndale, Calif., and Marsh and Nancy Sharp of Ga.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Orville Graves; son, Steven Graves; parents, Alvin Setterburg and Bernice Dixon; brother, Butch Setterburg. A memorial service will be held at the Golden Age Center in Weaverville, Calif., from 1 - 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9. It was sharp's wish that memorial donations be made to those she served and those who served her. Contributions to: The Roderick Center, Hayfork, Calif; The Golden Age Center, Weaverville, Calif.; and the EMT's of Douglas City Fire Department.
Ruby Helen Manning, 79, of Loyalton, died Feb. 3, 2002, at Health South in Reno, Nev. She was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Oklahoma, to Edgar Franklin and Leona Eugene Mason Cole. A 50-year resident of Loyalton, Manning moved there from Dennison, Texas. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed handicrafts and kept busy raising six children. While in Loyalton, she was a cook at Sierra Valley District Hospital for several years. She also cleaned medical offices in Loyalton for several years. Manning was a member of the Portola Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1974, and daughter, Patsy Hessman, in 1992. Survivors include her son, Terry Manning, of Loyalton; daughters, Helen Hansen, of Redding, Cathy Adams, of Reno, Nev., Linda Benson, of Gardnerville, Nev., and Carolyn West, of Portola; sisters, Pearl McKinney, of Calera, Okla., and Ethel McAlister, of Dennison, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place at Manni Funeral Home, 380 Rio Grande, Portola, Thursday, Feb. 7, between 6 and 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Portola, followed by burial in Mountain View Cemetery
in Loyalton.
Earl Edward "Stony" Stoner, Jr., 72, died at his residence in Quincy Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. Born Feb. 10, 1929, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, he grew up in Pomona. Stoner had lived in Quincy for the past 17 years, moving here from Livermore. He served as a submarine crewman in the U.S. Navy for four years.; then as a Merchant Marine for 20 more years, earning his Master Mariner's license. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for 16 years. In Quincy, Stoner worked for Feather River Materials. In 1990, he returned to school and graduated with honors from Feather River College in 1992. He was an avid outdoorsman and a member of the NRA, E. Clampus Vitas and the Quincy Elks Lodge. During the 1940s, Stoner made a living as a professional racer of midget and stock cars on the West Coast. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Mariana Andrews-Stoner, of Quincy; daughters, Kathy Stoner, of Torrance, Tammy Krikorian, of Monterey, and Marina Krikorian, of Berkeley; brother, Kenny Stoner, of Canoga Park; and sister, Judy Andrews, of Quincy. Following cremation, a celebration of Stoner's life, along with military honors, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Fehrman Mortuary Chapel in Quincy. The family requests any donations in his memory be made to Plumas Community Hospice or the Plumas County Museum, c/o Fehrman Mortuary and Crematory, P.O. Box 53, Quincy, CA 95971.
Arthur Odell Harris, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 4, 2001 at his home in Garden Valley. He was born in the Mormon Colony of Kelsey, Tex., on July 16, 1917. He was a long-time resident of Susanville before his move to Garden Valley, where he resided for the past 28 years. He worked for the California Division of Forestry. He was ambitious and very talented in industrial arts. He would make anything and was considered by his family to be an outstanding example of what a man should be. He is survived by daughters Mary Bolton and Helen Clark McCrath, both of Susanville; sisters Evelyn Crider of Corpus Cristi, Tex.; nieces Luana Lucero, R.N., of Salem, Ore., and Lenore Harris of Garden Valley, who provided nursing care for him; and many nieces and nephews and grandchildren. He was buried in Kelsey Cemetery
on Tuesday, April 5. Graveside services were conducted by Bishop Keith Harson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Maoza Elizabeth Thorton, 85, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the SunBridge Skilled Nursing Center in Susanville.
She was born Dec. 19, 1915, in Wilkes Co, Georgia.
She was a long time resident of Napa, Calif. Recently moving to Lassen County in Nov. 2000.
She was a nurse with the California Dept. of Veterans Affair for many years, retiring in 1968.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Thomas Thornton of 63 years.
She is survived by her sons; William Curtis Thornton of Napa, Thomas Lynn Thornton of Susanville, her daughter Mary Beth McNabb of Napa, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Napa, Calif., at a later date.
Darrell Monroe Carson, 35, died at his Susanville residence on Monday, April 9, 2001.
He was born Oct. 2, 1965, in California and had been a resident of Lassen County for 34 years.
He had been a baker at Safeway for 3 years and was a model train hobbiest.
He is survived by his mother, Ronai D. Carson of Susanville.
Memorial services were held Monday, April 16, at the Lassen Cmemetery.

Adeline "Lily" Farano, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in San Bruno, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Farano. She is survived by her three sons, Sam Farano (and his wife Diana) of San Bruno, Calif., Tony Farano (and his wife Norma) of Sparks, Nev., and Primo Farano (and his wife Diana) of Stockton, Calif. One daughter, Rose Duering (and her husband Walt) of Sacramento. A brother Louis Micone of Sacramento. Eleven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
