Jennie Pauline Mann, 85, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the SunBridge Nursing Facility in Susanville. She was born in Loyalton, Calif on March 6, 1916, and had been a resident of Lassen County for 58 years, coming from Plumas County to Herlong in 1943. She was employed by Sierra Army Depot for 30 years, retiring in December 1978. Along with enjoying her family, she enjoyed fishing, dancing and was an avid bowler for many years. She was a 20 year member of TOPS International. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. Mann; parents, Henry and Rosa Albini; brother, Anthony Albini; sister, Mary Williams granddaughter, Kimberly P. Stout and step-grandson, Clay Hayworth. Survivors include four children and spouses, Walter and Shirley Beister, of Ukiah, Calif; Lorraine and Bob Stout, of Ukiah; Caroline and Monte Keeler,of Doyle, Calif; Valerie and Joseph Brown, of Susanville; step-children Phyllis Hayworth, of Susanville; James and Leanna Mann, of Quincy; two sisters and spouses, Celia McCallister, of Doyle; Helen and Guido Maddalena, of Sierraville, Calif; 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Walton's Colonial Mortuary in Susanville. Interment followed at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville. The family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice.
Donald D. Fanning, 87, died on Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the SunBridge Skilled Nursing Facility in Susanville. He was born on March 9, 1914, in Greely, Colo., and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past 10 years. He enjoyed gardening and watching baseball. Survivors include his wife, Eva Mae Fanning, of Chester, Calif; two daughters, Loretta Wallace, of Chester, Violet Porter, of Doyle, Calif; three sons, Bob Fanning, of Chester; Ken Fanning of Herlong; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Private services were held.
Interment will be private at Chester Cemetery
in Chester.
Helen Nadine Terrill, 82, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at the Lakewood Christian Homecare Facility in Redding. She was born on March 9, 1919 on the Kansas- Oklahoma border. She was the first born of six children. She is survived by sons, Larry, of Suanville and Bill, of Redding; five grandsons, John (JT), of Susanville, Jody of Boise, Idaho, Todd, of Reno, Nev., Michael and Brian, both of Redding, three great-granddaughters and four great grandsons, her brother, Eugene Shields, of Reno, and sister, Dixie Garrett, of Altamont, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Henry Lee Terrill in 1986. After graduating as valedictorian of Chetopa High School and passing a two-day test to obtain a teaching certificate, she taught school for two years in Kansas (teaching all eight grades) and attended Pittsburgh State Teachers College to work on obtaining her teacher credentials. While doing this she was introduced by friends, to Lee Terrill and they (along with two other couples) were married on March 27, 1940, and they moved to Susanville to live and raise their family. During the war she worked at Sierra Army Depot as a checker and dispatcher of train crews moving ammo. She devoted 40 years, 1947 to 1987, to education in Susanville. She taught mostly third grade and attended summer school every summer until a serious illness in 1985 prevented it. She graduated cum laude from Chico State College in 1959, the same year Larry graduated from Lassen High and Bill graduated from the eighth grade at Roosevelt. She went on to obtain her masters degree from the University of Nevada, cum laude. She also had a California Reading Specialists Credential and an Administrative Credential. The last 14 years of her employment she worked as coordinator of special programs for Susanville Elementary School District handling such programs as Gifted and Talented, Bilingual, Career Education and Early Childhood Education. She worked right up until the last day of December 1986 before retiring at age 67. She loved her job, fellow teachers, and working with and for students. Through the years she has taught or touched thousands of local youths lives. Terrell was a 50-plus year member of the Order of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron both in 1957 and 1991. She was also a 48-year member of the Court of Amaranth and worked with Job's Daughters for more than 10 years. She was active in the Susanville Teachers Association and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was widely respected, both locally and state wide, as a very knowledgeable teacher and educator and served on numerous committees for the Calif. Department of Education. In her retirement years she took an active role in the retired teacher group and became an avid member of the doll club. Helen always took pride in her family and was a very loving and giving person and she will be missed greatly by all the people who know her. She also loved to travel, visiting Russia, China and other countries. Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the Walton's Colonial Mortuary in Susanville. Interment followed at the Diamond Crest Cemetery
in Johnstonville, Calif.
Gregory Valov, 48, died at his home in Bieber, Calif., on Thursday, April 26, 2001. He was born in Alhambra, Calif., on March 5, 1953, and had been a resident of Lassen County for the past seven years. Prior to his living in Lassen County, he had resided in Southern California, the Bay Area, and Australia. Valov had been a master motorcycle mechanic for moe than 25 years, and had been a teacher at the Arizona Tech Motorcycle Trade School. Survivors include his mother, Frances Valov, of Bieber; sons, Bryan and Andrew Valov; brothers, James Valov of Montana, and Chris Valov, of Bieber; and sisters, Michal Ann Dobrenen of Fresno, and Debra Valov, of Oakland, Calif. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Virginia Lee London, 88, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at SunBridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Susanville. She moved to Westwood, Calif., in 1962 from Los Angeles, Calif., and had resided in Susanville for the past 2 1/2 years. She was born May 15, 1912, in Maryville, Mo. She had been employed as a legal secretary for 26 years, last employed by Thomas Mercola attorney at law. She enjoyed tending to her garden and sewing. She is survived by her friend Dixie Spear, of Westwood. She is preceded in death by one sister and one brother. Following cremation at Fehrman Crematory in Quincy, Calif., at her request no services will be held. Inurnment will take place in the Westwood Cemetery. Joyce Elaine Carter, 62, of Yuba City, Calif., died at Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville, Calif., on Monday, June 30, 2003. Born in Alamosa, Colo., on Nov. 3, 1940, she was a Yuba City resident for six years, formerly living in Madeline and Susanville from 1976-1997. She was a homemaker and enjoyed traveling, spending time with her children and grandchildren, waterpainting, crocheting, surfing the web and e-mailing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Bobby J. Carter and her mother, Helen Van Skiver. She is survived by her sons, Roger Carter of Yuba City and Daniel Carter of Lacombe, La.; daughters, Debra Markos of Sacramento and Anita Fleshman of Susanville; father, Phillip Nelson of Fremont, Calif.; brothers, Charles Nelson of Pleasanton, Calif., James Nelson of Fernley, Nev., Laurence Nelson of Grass Valley and Robert Nelson of Moses Lake, Wash.; sister, Elizabeth Rippee of Rohnert Park, Calif.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held on June 5, 2003, at the Chapel of the Twin Cities, with Rev. Ray Davis, of Valley Hospice officiating.
C.B. Ratliff, 87, died at his residence on July 21, 2003. He was born in Bonham, Texas, on Aug. 9, 1915 and was a Lassen County resident for the past 14 years, coming from San Jose, Calif. He worked very hard all of his life and you could find him working outdoors. He is survived by his son, Tom of Madeline; daughter, Barbara Detrick of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; brother, Don Ratliff of Florida, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held at a later date at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Godfrey Warner Rodgers, 89, died on July 23 at the Long Term Care Facility of Seneca Health Care District located in Chester, CA. Born to California natives Manuel and Ora Warner Rogers on November 2, 1913, he was a Placer County native where he was raised and resided until moving from Roseville, CA to Westwood in 1965. He retired from the Aero Jet Corporation as a Tool Crib attendant with over 12 years of dedicated service to the company. He was a Charter Member of the Westwood Seniors and an avid fisherman who enjoyed the art of fly tying. He is preceded in death by one brother, Clement. He is survived by his loving wife Nina who is currently residing in a care facility located in Redding; sons, David of Sutherlin, Ore. and Richard of McKinleyville, Calif.; brother, Robert of Citrus Heights, Calif.; sister Mary Garrison of Visalia, Calif.; grandchildren, David, Robert, Steven and Matthew and two great grandchildren. A celebration of his life took place at the graveside in the Westwood Cemetery

Edward Walter Zangger, 74, died at his residence on July 23, 2003. He was in Standish on Jan. 1, 1929 and had been a Lassen County resident for his entire life. He lived on the same ranch all of his life where he pursued an agricultural business. He was very active in supporting the agricultural and farming community with his participation in various boards and committees. He was a member of the Standish Bible Church but due to his health he wasn't abled to attend in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Alice. He is survived by his wife Violette of Standish; sons, Edward (Bud) of Eureka, Calif. and George of Reno; daughters, Kathleen Harrison of Alturas, Joann Ratkey of Standish, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30 at Janesville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Parkinson's Disease or Crossroads Ministries.
