Robert Harrower "Bob" Johnson, 81, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2003, in the Susanville Nursing and Care facility. Johnson was born in Petaluma on July 8, 1922 and spent his young life in that rural area before moving to San Francisco where he graduated from high school. In 1942 he enrolled in the U.S. Coast Guard Naval Academy in Alameda and served in the Merchant Marines until being discharged in 1945. He served throughout the Pacific and European theatres of World War II. He was employed with PG&E for several years until he entered the California Highway Patrol in Sacramento in 1956. He was a traffic officer in the Norwalk area on motorcycle detail before transferring to the Susanville area from which he retired in 1972. During his tenure in Lassen County he was a charter member of the Johnstonville Fire Department's "Minute Men" serving as captain. He is a past captain of the Lassen County Sheriff's Posse, held a real estate brokers license, was a member of Thomas Tucker American Legion Post #204, a Past Exalted Ruler of Susanville Elks #1587 and a member of the Lassen County Cattleman's Association. In 1989 Johnson was honored by the cattleman as Cattleman of the Year after ten years as secretary-treasurer for that organization. Survivors are his wife of 40 years, Jill; sons, Joseph F. of Clayton, James R. of Marysville, Wash. and Carl S. of Lemmon Valley, Nev.; daughter, Karen Witesman of Davis, Calif.; sister, Carol Smith of Auburn, Calif.; and seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Monday, July 21, by the Susanville Past Exalted Rulers Association in the Elks Lodge. In memorial, friends may donate to the scholarship funds of the Susanville Elks Lodge, P.O. Box 1299, Susanville or the Lassen County Cattleman's Association, P.O. Box 811, Susanville.
Roderic Eugene Felion, 98, died on Saturday, July 12, 2003. He was born on December 8, 1904, in Akeley, Minn. He was the son of Raymond "Mike" (Hormisdas) Filion and Amanda LaFlamme, both natives of Canada and was the last survivor of 13 children. He worked for the Feather River Lumber Company in Delleker, Calif. and as a setter for the Red River Lumber Company, both in Akeley and Westwood. He studied a home course in accounting, and in 1941, moved to Chico, where he founded a three-partner accounting firm and became a licensed public accountant. He later moved to Sacramento and became a partner with two of his brothers in Felion & Felion Lumber Company. Later he resumed his accounting practice in the Sacramento area until his retirement in 1970. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and traveler during his entire life. He also was a 76-year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iona; daughter, Frances Greer and son, Larry. He is survived by his sons, Rod Jr. and Alan of Sacramento, Glenn (John) of Cathedral City and Michael of Elk Grove, Calif.; daughters, Sister Jeanne Fallon of Sacramento and Alicia Uhouse of Orangevale; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A mass of Christian burial will was held at Calvary Cemetery
in Sacramento, on July 16. Remembrances may be made to Stanford Settlement, 450 W. El Camino Ave., Sacramento, CA.
Georgia Catherine Cochell, 80, died on Thursday, May 29, 2003 at her home with her four children at her side, on her Idle Spur Ranch in Standish. She was born on Jan. 7, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. She had been a Lassen County resident since moving here from Santa Barbara 13 years ago. In 1940, she met a young man by the name of Joseph Cochell. He told Miss Simpson that he was going to marry her and she thought it was a tall tale. She returned to California and corresponded with Joseph for a year-and-a-half. Later, Joseph had to sell a pair of prized spurs to make his way out to California. This was done so that he could keep his promise to his wife, whom he married in 1942. She loved her family and had been a Jehovah's Witness for 55 years, as well as her children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph. She is survived by her daughter Kathleen of Westminster, Calif.; sons, Larry of Mission Viejo, Calif., Wayne and Rick of Standish; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. There was a memorial service for her on June 14 at the Kingdom Hall in Susanville.
Melvin "Bud" Polan, 75, died at his residence in Susanville on Friday, July 11, 2003. He was born on May 27, 1928 was a resident of Lassen County for the past 49 years. Coming from Washington, Penn., he was an expert in anything he touched, including building furniture, leather crafting and making knives. He enjoyed black gunpowder guns, cowboy shoot at the Barkley Ranch and the four-wheel-drive club. He was an avid fan and supporter of the Lassen High School sports program, but he truly had a deep love for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Steelers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgetta. He is survived by his sons, Rich of Susanville and Jeff of Standish; daughters, Kay Woupios of Susanville and Ellie Brown of Janesville; sister, June Selvaggi of Washington and seven grandchildren. Memorial services were held on Thursday, July 17. Burial will be at Diamond Crest Cemetery
next to his wife at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests any donations be made to the Lassen High School sports boosters.
June L. Reinhart, 78, died on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Banner Lassen Medical Center. She was born on July 17, 1924, in Youngstown, Ohio and was a Lassen County resident of Lassen County for the past 47 years. She loved to cook, sew and garden and be with her family. She is survived by her sons, Randy of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Wayde of Butte, Mont.; daughters, Rhonda Reinhart of Susanville, Carol Bradford of Lakeside, Calif. and Rebecca Peugh of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, sisters; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There are no services planned at this time.
William Poor, 77, died at Banner Lassen Medical Center on July 14, 2003. He was born in Crawford County, Arkansas on May 28, 1926 and had been a Lassen County resident for the past 58 years, coming from Arkansas He worked for Collins Pine for 25 years as a timber faller, retiring in 1985. He had a great passion for rock hunting and was a rock hound belonging to Lassen Gem and Mineral Society. He was an avid NASCAR fan and also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife Joyce of Susanville; sons, Leonard and wife, Kathy of Susanville, Richard and wife, Kathy of Susanville; daughters, Linda and husband, Max Wiles of Susanville and Mary and husband, Craig McAuliffe of Empire, Nev.; sisters, Bertha Landers of Shreveport, La. and Rosetta Hogue of Hope, Ark.; brother, Roy Allen of Roseberg, Ore.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 19, at Walton's Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
Winnie Vazquez, 54, died at her residence on Tuesday, July 15, 2003. She was born in Oklahoma on April 23, 1949 and was a resident of Lassen County for the past 30 years, coming from Garberville. She worked for Garberville Hospital as a medical receptionist for five years and then moved to Susanville. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses and enjoyed friendships she gained in the Kingdom Hall. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, canning and any outdoor activity she could be involved in. She loved animals and loved to ride Harley's. She is survived by her husband, Edward; son, Timothy Teets of Garberville; daughter, Angela Hunt of Weeott; and one grandchild. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Norma Linda "Lin" Harmegnies, 75, formerly of Susanville, died Sept. 16, 2003, in Lakeside, Ore. Lin was born April 30, 1928, to Rene and Norma Temepesta Charron in Ferndale, Mich. As a child, she moved with her family to Seattle, Wash. She met and married Sandy Hyde in 1948 and had three children before divorcing in 1958. In February 1959, she married Al Harmegnies. They moved to Susanville that July, where they resided for 33 years. Lin worked at the California Correctional Center from 1975 until her retirement in 1990. In 1991, she and Al moved to Lakeside, Ore. She was a member of the Lakeside Garden Club and the AARP. Lin is survived by her husband, Al Harmengnies of Lakeside, Ore.; her daughters, Donna Egure of Redding, Cathy Harmegnies of Payette, Idaho and Charron Plummer of Irvine; her sons, Michael Hyde of Susanville, Gary Hyde of Birmingham, Ala., and Gene Harmegnies of Renton, Wash.; her brother, Bob Charron of Vancouver, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A celebration of life ws held.

Paul R. Allen, 81, died on Jan. 30, 2004. He was born on Oct. 25, 1922, in Cheshire, Ore., to Floy Lee and Roscoe C. Allen.
He was involved with the Susanville Methodist Church as well as the church camp. He was also a manager at the Sierra Pacific mill for a number of years.
At the age of 65, upon retirement from building lumber mills and power plants throughout the United States and the Philippines, he, along with his wife, Norma, opened a baby home in the Philippines, where they worked to save the lives of dozens of homeless and sickly babies, 53, of who were adopted out into homes around the world.
He was a fifth generation member of the Franklin Christian Church and will be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Norma V. (Richardson); son, Curtis; daughters, Paula (Curtis) Erickson and Itanna; brothers, Warren and R. Clarence; niece, Mary (Bill) Bunch; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held on Saturday, Feb. 7. In lieu of flowers, his family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Franklin Christian Church for the Little Children’s home in the Philippines.
Pike F. J. Garnier, 86, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Reno. He was born in Doyle on Sept. 13, 1917 and had been a lifetime resident of Lassen County.
He had owned and operated a cattle ranch in the Doyle area for most of his life with his son, Jeffery.
He also enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Loretta Sanchez.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery and Kathie Garnier of Susanville; sister, Mary Conway of Susanville; six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Walton’s Chapel on Monday, Feb. 2. Burial followed at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
