NORMA JOY FRAZIER
Norma Joy Frazier passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the age of 73 in Reno, Nevada.
In her final hours she was surrounded by her loving husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the Regent Care Center whose caring staff made Joy comfortable and provided support for her entire family.
Joy’s passing was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Naomi, and her two brothers Wayne and Bill.
Joy was born to Rev. Edgar W. and Helen Bell  White on Aug. 15, 1931,in Grand Island, Neb. In kindergarten she started using “Joy” as her first name rather than Norma because it was easier to spell and, since then, everyone has known her as Joy.
Her father became a minister at age 15 and was drafted into WWI as a medic. After that, he became the musical director for Amiee Simple McPherson for several years. After getting married his wife Helen supported Edgar and became deeply involved with all aspects of church activities. He was one of the pioneers of the Assembly of God Church and became a district superintendent, headquartered in Grand Island, Neb., where he was also the Pastor of the Grand Island Church.
Joy grew up as a minister’s daughter, living in many different communities. While in high school, and because of her church activities of singing and playing instruments with her family, music was her primary interest, and voice, chorus, orchestra and marching band were her favorite activities. She had a very beautiful voice and perfect pitch. She graduated in 1949 from Visailia Union High School in Visailia, California. Since then she has been an active member of the alumni and this past October 2004 attended her 55th high school reunion.
After graduating high school she traveled for a year with her father and mother holding revival meetings across the Midwest at many different churches, mainly singing.
In 1951 she moved from Visailia to Cottage Grove, Ore., where her father had become the new minister of the Assembly of God Church. It was there in 1952 she met her future husband, Elchard “Elch” Frazier, and had no idea she would eventually marry him because they had absolutely no interest in one another (at that time).
However, as friends and while Elch was in the service in Korea and Japan, the two of them exchanged correspondence on and off. It wasn’t until after returning to the states in February 1955, just in time for his brother’s wedding where she was the soloist for the wedding ceremony, that they started dating.
On May 12, 1955, they were formally engaged. Elch was against a big wedding and Joy didn’t care but hoped her father would marry them, but instead they eloped to Kelso, Wash. There, they were married by Rev. Pierce, who, as it turned out, also happened to be a former member of Joy’s father’s church while they were living in Hanford, California.
The Rev. Pierce’s family, consisting of lawyers and judges, were very helpful in getting both a marriage license and a waiver to the normal three-day waiting period which would allow the marriage to take place the very same day as their arrival, July 22, 1955.
They were married in the parsonage witnessed by the minister’s wife while she was standing at the ironing board. Upon arriving in Kelso that day the whole ordeal took less than three hours, start to finish.
Two years later Joy and Elch brought their son, Byron, into this world followed by their daughter, Lori, two years after him. While raising her family Joy supported her husband’s occupation through many transfers and promotions which involved 22 relocations, including their last being to their home in Susanville,  Calif., where they planned to live out their retirement years. On July 22, 2005 they would have celebrated their Golden Anniversary.
Joy is survived by her husband Elch; her son Byron and wife Dianne, of Susanville; her daughter Lori and husband John, of Arizona; grandchildren Wayne and wife Stephanie, of Nevada, Niki and husband Nate, of Nevada, Steven and wife Kristina, of Michigan and Christopher, of Arizona and his fiancée Abby, of Susanville; great -grandchildren Nathan and Hunter; many nieces, nephews, and cousins located throughout the country.
Joy’s whole life was devoted to her family, loving wife to her husband, mother to her children, grandma to her grand children, and Nana to her great-grandchildren.
She loved the Susanville area, the four seasons that the region offered, the high desert and its wildlife, and the beautiful view of Diamond Mountain from her home. Some of her most favorite passages from the Bible were John 3:16 and the 23rd Psalm.
Graveside services were held at Diamond Crest Cemetery in Susanville on March 9. The service was led by Pastor Rick Conrad and soloist Dan Merritt of the Community Evangelical Free Church. Funeral arrangements were provided by Truckee Meadows funeral home.
She touched many lives and will be missed by all.
