LOREN "BUZZ" LUKE
Long time Susanville resident Loren "Buzz" Luke passed away peacefully at Banner Lassen Medical Center on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at the age of 89 with his family at his side.
Buzz, as family and friends called him, was born on Sept. 30, 1916 in Parsons, Kan., to John Dean and Addie Pearl Luke. The family moved to Janesville, Calif., in 1919.
Buzz attended Janesville Elementary School and graduated from Lassen High School with the class of 1934.
Buzz married his high school sweetheart, Doris McQueen, in 1937.
Buzz worked as a local stucco/plasterer until 1966. His work can still be seen on many local homes and businesses in the area. He started working at Sierra Army Depot in 1966 as a maintenance mechanic until his retirement in 1980.
Buzz and Doris enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time with their family. They also loved working in their yard and garden.
He was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 1992 after 55 wonderful years together.
Buzz is survived by his daughter Lorena and her husband Doug Millar; grandchildren Linda and Galen Roberts, Larry and BonnieLou Millar, Darrel and Cindy Millar, Steve and Cheryl Phillips; great-grandchildren Clinton Roberts, Emily, Amy and Scott Phillips, Kayla and Karly Millar, and Justin, Jason and Jennifer Millar, all of Susanville. Also surviving are several other extended family members.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 11, at Janesville Cemetery.
GLENN SOMMERFIELD
Glenn Sommerfield, of St. Maries, Idaho, passed on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, due to a massive stroke. Glenn was born on June 16, 1945 and raised in Redwood City, Calif. Glenn began his career in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff for Plumas County and a corrections officer at the California Correctional Center State Prison in Susanville.
Glenn moved to Idaho in the mid 1980s and worked for the state of Idaho in the Department of Health and Welfare. Glenn always felt his place was in civil service because he wanted to make a change and help those who couldn't help themselves.
Glenn was a beloved father, grandpa, brother and friend. He loved his family, hunting, fishing and just about anything related to being outdoors. He had a way with horses and found peace in the saddle. He longed to spend his time with Mother Nature and was content with his friends or his horse "Smokey."
Glenn is survived by his four daughters, Kelley Stout, of Lake Almanor, Jennifer Zamora, of Sacramento, Dena Sommerfield, of Crocket, Calif., Kristin Sommerfield, of Eugene, Ore.; his four grandchildren, Scott, Lexi, Marissa and Cierra. He will finally meet his daughter Stacey Sommerfield who passed in 1970.
There will be no service at Glenn's request; however, the Panhandle Back Country Horsemen Society, in which Glenn was the vice president, will name their annual poker ride on May 5, the "Glenn Sommerfield Memorial Poker Ride."
Daddy, your girls love you and we promise to keep the circle strong and unbroken so that someday, somewhere in the high country, we'll meet again.
JUNE BARTLEY
June Bartley passed away on Feb. 24, 2006, at Susanville Nursing and Rehab. She was born on Feb. 3, 1919, in Prairie City, Ore. She had lived the past 13 years in Susanville.
June was a placement specialist at UNR for many years, which she really enjoyed. During that time she spent many hours with her husband doing ranching and rodeos, which they did with their children, and grandchildren. She loved reading, traveling with her family, needlepoint, quilting. She was an honorary member of the Nevada White Hats, and also the Vaqueros.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gus last year.
She is survived by her son Micheal and his wife Terry Bartley, of Susanville; daughter Kay and her husband Wade Gowan, of Susanville; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service for June at 2 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Sierra Memorial Gardens in Reno, Nev.
KAREN GREEN NEWTON
Karen Green Newton, daughter of Warren and Clara Beth Green, granddaughter of Clent and Erma Gibson Haley and great-granddaughter of Lassen County pioneers Clara and B.F. Gibson, passed away Jan. 19, 2006, in Sacramento, Calif.
A former resident of Standish she was born at former Potters Maternity Home in Susanville, Jan. 26, 1952. She attended Lassen Union High School one year before moving to Sacramento in 1967.
Newton is survived by husband Elwood (Biff) Newton; daughter Keri Newton; mother Clara Beth Haley Green; sister Nanette Canterbury; brother David Green; aunt Gloria Bertsch; father-in-law Elwood Newton I; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at First Covenant Church in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
CHARLOTTE LEE FRAUND
Clear Creek resident Charlotte Lee Fraund passed from this life to join her husband with the Lord Wednesday morning, Feb. 22, 2006, at Chino Medical Center, Chino, Calif.
Charlotte was born 73 years ago in East St. Louis, Ill., to the late Illinois natives Gilbert and Gladys Jones on Aug. 7, 1932. She was raised and educated in the East St. Louis area and shortly following her high school graduation joined the U.S. Air Force. She served her country honorably during the Korean War.
While in the service she met fellow serviceman Walter Fraund and following her discharge the two were united in matrimony on Feb. 15, 1954 in Alabama. After Walter's discharge the family settled in Southern California and to this union three children were born.
Walter and Charlotte fell in love with the Lake Almanor/Westwood vicinity after vacationing in the area. From 1965 to 1990, they resided in Clear Creek as vacation residents. In 1990 following Walter's retirement, the two of them moved to Clear Creek as permanent residents.
Charlotte was a devout member of the Roman Catholic faith and was an active member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and their Altar Society. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting in oils, while also enjoying relaxing reading.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years in 1997.
Charlotte leaves in passing her sons Walter Jr., of Santa Rosa, Calif., Curt of, Benecia, Calif.; daughter Deborah Parker, of Chino, Calif.; sister Jeanne Dix, of Palm Springs; seven loving grandchildren and one precious great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated for the repose of Charlotte's soul, at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church located in Westwood. Interment took place alongside her late husband Walter in the Westwood Cemetery. JAMES DAVIES MCLEAN
James "Jim" Davies McLean, 72, passed away Feb. 15, 2006.
Jim was born Sept. 23, 1933, in Durango, Colo., to Eugene and Hettie McLean. He graduated from San Luis Obispo High in 1951 and from the University of Montana in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in forestry. He was employed with the U.S. Forest Service, beginning his career with the Modoc National Forest in 1956; subsequently working with the Plumas, Lassen and Six Rivers national forests; and finishing his career at Shasta Trinity National Forest in 1988.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Cathy McLean of Mount Shasta, Ken and Linda McLean of Cottonwood, and Jerry and Linda McLean of Redding; daughters and sons-in-law Raiann and Brian Hodge of Redding, and Missy and Jeff Manning of La Quinta; sister Altha McCaw of Anderson; grandchildren Kyle and Sarah McLean of Anderson, Sara McLean of Anderson, Kristine McLean of Redding, Annie McLean of Redding, Brad McLean of Cottonwood, Evan McLean of Cottonwood, Brett Hodge of Redding, Valarie Geiger of Redding, and Tyler McLean of Redding; great-grandchildren Jacob McLean of Anderson, Annalise McLean of Anderson and Keaton Fletcher of Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Hettie McLean; sister, Peggy Murtey; and daughter, Mariann McLean.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at the Valley Christian Center, located at 2831 Freeman St. in Anderson. Reception will follow at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Shasta Blood Center, 2420 Athens Ave., Redding, CA, or a blood bank of the donor's choice.
