BERTHA ELLA CONRAD
Bertha Ella Conrad passed away on Sept. 9, 2005, in Susanville. She was born in Clyde Park, Mont., on Dec. 24, 1912, to Daniel Franklin Rickards and Leah Hardin McDonell Rickards. She was the sixth of 10 children and the last survivor of the 10 children born to Leah, with two McDonell brothers, two McDonell sisters, four Rickards sisters and one Rickards brother.
Bertha is survived by her daughters Helen Watson (husband Dub, deceased) with five children Jana, Sara, Sydney, Wesley and Laura, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Dena Friddle, spouse Bob Friddle with two children Michael and Ryan, and one grandchild, and Susan Wannebo, spouse Don Wannebo. Susan has two children, Matthew and Samantha, and two grandchildren. Bertha had numerous nieces and nephews.
Bertha spent the first 10 years of her life in Park and Gallatin counties in Montana, starting to school in Roberts, Mont., where her grandfather John W. Hardin is buried. In 1922 her family left Montana going to  Washington and on to California. They lived in Porterville and  White River (Tailholt.)
Bertha and Charles (Mike) Conrad married on Feb. 10, 1933, in Bakersfield. With Mike working in the mining field, Bertha made her home in houses or tents in Needles, Posey or wherever it took them. During World War II when they lived in Oakland, Mike worked in the shipyards, and Bertha was a conductor on the Key System train from Oakland, Richmond and San Francisco.
When they moved to Lassen County she first lived in Doyle and drove the school bus for Clyde Deal. She and a couple of other bus drivers went to Michigan and drove three new school buses back to Susanville.
Later, after moving to Janesville, Bertha still drove the school bus and worked at the school cafeteria. During summers, she cooked at church and 4-H camps. Her final job was as a cook at the Johnstonville School.
After retiring Bertha and Mike enjoyed taking their camp trailer to Eagle Lake and belonged to a campers' club. Bertha was very active in the Jolly Elders and was always there to listen. She was very proud to have been selected as a Lassen County Old Timer of the year for 2004. One of her favorite things in her last few years was sitting on her front porch in Janesville and watching all the people drive by.
For those who knew Bertha we have lost a very special person to one and all.
Memorial services for Mrs. Conrad will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at the Honey Lake Valley Assembly of God Church in Janesville.

Above all, Shirley believed in Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior and shared her faith with anyone who needed hope, encouragement, or God's unconditional love and gift of salvation.
Memorial services for Shirley were held at Calvary Chapel of Jurupa Valley on Sept. 3, 2005.
Due to Shirley's special interest in two ministries, it has been suggested that donations can be made to either Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; or to Mission Endeavors (Cowboys for Christ), P.O. Box 51929, Riverside, CA 92507, "in memory of Shirley Taylor."
