Ruth Stewart

(May 11, 1912-Feb. 10, 1999)

"Mama" Ruth Stewart died Wednesday in a Vallejo hospital after a brief illness. She was 86.

A native of  Louisiana, Mrs. Stewart was a Vallejo resident who worked for 10 years at Todd Shipyard in Richmond before retiring in 1951. She was a member of Evangelist Temple of Vallejo.

She is survived by daughters Gladys Flowers, of Vallejo, and Laura and Barbara, both of Vallejo; sons Fred Craig and Tommy Stewart, both of Vallejo; 25 grandchildren and 60 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Manigault Mortuary in Vallejo.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church in Vallejo, with Pastor Joseph Flowers officiating. Visitation will be held Feb. 17, from noon to 7 p.m., at Manigault Mortuary.

Mrs. Stewart will be buried at Skyview Memorial Lawn.

May Milner

(May 21, 1924 - Feb. 11, 2001)

May Cecelia Milner, 76, died Sunday of natural causes at a Vallejo hospital.

Mrs. Milner was born in Oakland and was a lifetime resident of Crockett. She was a retired manager for the cafeteria at C&H Sugar Company for the Coca Cola Company after 11 years. Mrs. Milner was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crockett, St. Rose Church Women's Guild in Crockett, Native Daughters of the Golden West in Crockett, and Vallejo R.V.(ers) #559. She enjoyed travel and collecting Hummel figurines.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, John H. of Crockett; daughters, Maureen Middleton of Union City and Eileen Simmons of Auburn; and three grandchildren.

Visitation from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Hosselkus Chapel, 1 Rolph Park Dr., Crockett. Funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crockett. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.

Contributions preferred to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Living Memorial, 555 Third Ave., Crockett, CA 94525 or to the charity of the donors choice.

S.H. Rice

(June 30, 1916 - Feb. 13, 1999)

S. H. "Hank" Rice, 82, died Saturday at home after a short illness.

A native of New York, Mr. Rice was a resident of Vallejo for 35 years. He was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Navy working in Data Systems and retiring in 1969 as one of the first E-9 master chiefs. He served during World War II, and in Korea and in Vietnam.

Mr. Rice was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 8, Vallejo Moose Lodge No. 468 and the Meals on Wheels. He also worked as an IRS volunteer at the senior center for many years helping seniors prepare their income tax returns.

His wife, LaVern, preceded him in death in 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Joan Rowe of Fremont and Jill  Taylor of Salinas; and a brother, Fred of Tracy.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels, with the Rev. Stanley Cornils and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 8 officiating. Inurnment will be private in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Meals on Wheels, 1350 Amador St., Vallejo 94590 or to the American Cancer Society, 1652 West  Texas St., Ste. 110, Fairfield 94533.

Manuela Gutierrez

(Jan. 1, 1905 - Oct. 10, 2000)

Manuela Toledo Gutierrez, 95, died Tuesday at a local hospital following a long illness.

Mrs. Gutierrez was born in the Philippine Islands and was a Vallejo resident for 72 years. She was a homemaker and in earlier years, she and her sisters were a singing trio, and worked in Vaudeville with Buster Keeton and many others. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip in 1970.

Survivors include daughter, Paulette Chanco of San Francisco; sons, Phil Jr. (Dolores) of Vallejo and Roberto (Karyn) of Georgia; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels, Vallejo. Vigil service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Colonial Chapels. Mass of Christian burial at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Burial in All Souls Catholic Cemetery.

Robert Garrett Jr.

(April 2, 1918 - Dec. 10, 2000)

Robert Ray Garrett Jr., 82, died Sunday at a local hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Garrett, commonly known as "Ray," was born in Halls, Tenn. and was a Vallejo resident since 1958. He graduated from high school in Oceana, Va. in 1936 and enlisted in the Navy ten days after graduation. He served in World War II and the Korean War and retired with the rank of Lt. Comdr.. after 22 years of service. He was also employed as an instructor at California Maritime Academy and then obtained a Masters in Social Work. He then served as a social worker and welfare administrator in Solano, Napa, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties. He also provided Family, Marriage and Child Counseling for 19 years at the Solano County Social Services Agency. He was admitted to the California Bar at the age of 63 and provided services to low-income individual and families. Mr. Garrett enjoyed golf, and was a member of the American Bar Association, the Retired Officers Association, Elks Lodge 559, and AARP.

Survivors include his wife, Helen of Vallejo; daughter, Dorothy (Mike) Crowley of South Lake Tahoe; son, Robert III of South Bend, Wash.; brother, Jerry of Barrington, Ill; sisters, Elizabeth Rountrey of Norfolk, Va. and Marguerite Shaffer of Falls Church, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no services. Private inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Arrangements by Colonial Chapels, Vallejo.

Contributions preferred to St. Basil's Building Fund, 1225 Tuolumne St., Vallejo, CA 94590.

John Katz, Ph.D.

(May 10, 1922 - Feb. 15, 1999)

John Katz, 82, died Monday in a Vallejo hospital.

Born in Talnoye, Ukraine, he immigrated with his mother, brother and sister in 1922, his father having preceded the family, to the United States. They resided in Vera Cruz, Mexico for five years until they could enter the United States in 1928.

Dr. Katz lived in Portland, Ore. where he attended Failing Grade School, Lincoln High School and Reed College. He was on the tennis team at Lincoln. After attending Reed College, he went to graduate school and then returned to Portland to teach Spanish and biology at Commerce High School, where he also coached tennis. In 1952, he moved to Vallejo teaching and coaching at several East Bay high schools and junior colleges and officiating at tennis events and maintaining his business of tennis coaching.

He was a member of the Elks Club, the Northern California and U.S. Tennis Associations.

Survivors include his wife, June Snodgrass Katz; and several nieces and nephews.Memorial services will be at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Vallejo Elks Lodge. Entombment is private.
