Sharon Hammond

(Feb. 9, 1953 -- Feb. 15, 2002)

Sharon Faith Hammond, 49, died Friday in Vallejo. A native of Richmond, she was a 12-year resident of Benicia.

Mrs. Hammond worked as a maintenance supervisor for Chevron for 17 years and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and crafts.

Survivors include her husband of 14 years, James Hammond; sons, John-Michael (Jessica) Marwick, Gregory (Gina) Marwick and Russell Satler; sister, Sheila Rose and two grandchildren.

Visitation 10, a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Benicia. Services follow at 11 a.m., with interment at Rolling Hills Cemetery, Richmond.

Contributions are preferred to the Sclera Derma Foundation.

James Howell

Dec. 17, 1927 -- Sept. 22, 2002

James "Jim" Howell, 74, died Sept. 22 at Springs Road Living Center-Vallejo after a long illness.

Born in San Francisco, he was a Vallejo resident for the past two years.

Mr. Howell worked for the U.S. Postal Service for five years. He was a salesman for Gerber Products for 32 years. He retired in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Howell was a member of the QT Club of San Jose; was a 42-year member of the San Mateo Elk's Club and a two-year member of the Vallejo Elk's Club.

He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Kay of Vallejo; daughters, Candy (Woody Carlson) Howell of Galt; Debbie (Tim) Lopez of San Jose; Janne (John) Corda of Tahoe City; Susie (Ed) Shaver of Reno; sister, Joan (Ralph) Medeffesser of San Jose and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Vallejo Elk's Club.

Contributions are preferred to the charity of the donor's choice.

Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo.

Armando Torralba

Nov. 25, 1952 -- Jan. 27, 2003

Armando Caragan Torralba, 50, died Feb. 3 at his home in Vallejo after a short illness.

Born in the Philippines, he was a resident of Vallejo for 20 years.

Mr. Torralba worked as a cook for Jelly Bee restaurant for two years, retiring in 2001. He previously worked as a custodian at the Nugget in Reno, Nev.

He was a member of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Vallejo.

Survivors include his wife, Lolita of the Philippines; daughters, Arlene and Julian, both of Vallejo; sons, Ariel and Jerold, both of the Philippines; sisters, Mercedes Garcia of the Philippines; Nida Green of Nevada; Lydia of Vallejo; Teresita de la Cruz of the Philippines; and brother, Marlin (Rosalinda) of Vallejo.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 with a 7 p.m. vigil service on Feb. 2 at Colonial Chapels in Vallejo. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Feb. 2 at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Vallejo. Burial at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.

James Pryor

March 28, 1930 -- May 21, 2003

James Willie Pryor, 73, of Richmond died in a hospital May 21.

Mr. Pryor, who was born in Bastrop, La., was employed for five years at Albany Bowl.

Mr. Pryor attended the University of California, Berkeley as an art student and enjoyed basketball.

Survivors include his sister, Beverly of Stockton, and brothers, Jacob of Germany and Titus of Oakland.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. May 31 at the Civic Center Chapel of Wilson & Kratzer Mortuaries, 455 24th St., Richmond. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Charles L. Pryor of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be to the charity of the donor's choice.

Russell Jabs

(April 21, 1928 - April 5, 2001)

Russell E. Jabs, 72, died Thursday at a local hospital following a long illness.

Born in Napa, he had been a Vallejo resident for 65 years. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Oakland for 22 years until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Jabs was also employed with Pacific Enterprises, Don Lee Electronics, the Benicia Arsenal, RCA Service Company, MINSY, Yuba Manufacturing, Western Union Telegraph and Crowley's Department Store.

He was a U.S. Army Chaplain assistant during the Korean conflict. Mr. Jabs attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, he was a member of Artists League of Vallejo and of the Palleteers. He studied classical music in all forms and enjoyed opera, jazz and 20th century classical music.

He was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth Polley and his father Earl.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. There will be a funeral service Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Twin Chapels Mortuary. Service will be officiated by Pastor Hampton Deck of First Presbyterian Church, Vallejo.

Contributions are preferred to Kaiser Hospice Program, 975 Sereno Dr., Vallejo, CA 94589.

Berniece Smylie

(March 11, 1932 -June 9, 2001)

Berniece I. Smylie, 69, of Green Valley, died Saturday in a Fairfield hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Pixley and raised in Benicia. Mrs. Smylie graduated from Benicia High School and lived in Benicia until she moved to Green Valley in 1970. She worked as a dispatcher for the City of Benicia Police Department for over 30 years and retired in 1983. Mrs. Smylie was an avid artists and won several awards at Solano Community College.

Survivors include husband, Charles of Green Valley; son, Charles James of Pleasanton; and brother, William Reed of Benicia.

Memorial, 11 a.m. Friday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia, with the Rev. Al Marks officiating. Private inurnment.
