Joy Hansen

March 15, 1916 -- Feb. 14, 2003

Joy Hawley Hansen Sr., 86, of Vallejo, died Feb. 14 at Kaiser Medical Center-Vallejo after a brief illness.

Born in Soda Springs, Id., Mr. Hansen lived in Vallejo for 60 years. He worked as a carpenter for 52 years with Carpenters Local 180, retiring in 1979. Previously, he was an electronics engineer for seven years at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Vallejo, the Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 180 and the Just for Fun Music Club. He also donated his labor to local community projects.

Mr. Hansen was proficient in playing 14 different instruments, including the banjo, clarinet and violin. He also enjoyed fishing and bow hunting.

Mr. Hansen was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.

Survivors include wife Mildred Faye Booth Hansen of Vallejo, children Noreen Williams of Corona, Joy (Nelida) Hansen of Scottsburg, Va., Ray (Lori) Hansen of Lake Charles, La; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 18 in the church, 110 Los Santos Court, with High Priest Gerald Sigmiller officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the church. Burial will be in Skyview Memorial Lawn, which is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church, to the attention of Bishop Bonner.

Jeanne Heck

(March 15, 1920 - April 18, 2001)

Jeanne Millicent Bernhard Heck, 81, died Wednesday.

Mrs. Heck was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. and worked as an executive secretary in the Navy Department in  Washington D.C. She was also a Napa resident and worked as a textbook clerk for the Napa Valley Unified School District, retiring as an executive secretary in charge of school district attendance.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Chester.

Survivors include sons, Chester Jr. of San Mateo, Clarence of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and David of Lancaster; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial service, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Heck Hacienda.

Arrangements by Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel, Napa.

Kathryn Fildes

(Aug. 29, 1913 -June 12, 2001)

Kathryn L. Fildes, 87, died Tuesday at her home in Benicia following a long illness.

A native of East Rochester, N.Y., Mrs. Fildes lived in Benicia since 1993. She worked as a registered nurse for more than 50 years, retiring as the head nurse of the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at Millard-Filmore Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Anne (Thomas) Branch of Benicia, Lucille Seth of Buffalo, N.Y., and Patricia Donohue of Napa; sister, Nina Homen-Bauer of Ontario, N.Y.; grandchildren, Barbara Fildes Quinton, John, and Gregory; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial, 2 p.m. Tuesday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia, with Hospice Chaplain Gerald  Jones officiating. Private inurnment at Oakwood Cemetery Association, Penfield, N.Y.

Contributions preferred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105.

Mary Goodare

(April 19, 1923 - July 17, 2001)

Mary Reynolds Goodare, 78, of Fairfield, died Tuesday at her home.

Mrs. Goodare, also known as "Lillian" was born in New York, NY and was a Fairfield resident for 22 years. She prepared income tax files, and she also worked in advertising sales for the Santa Clara Journal.

Mrs. Goodare was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 1972 and her sister, Margaret of France, earlier this year .

She is survived by her brothers, Robert of  Washington, D.C. and James of Berkeley.

A memorial will be held Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. at Fairfield Presbyterian Church, 2100  Pennsylvania Ave., in Fairfield. Service will be officiated by Doug Huneke of Westminster Presbyterian of Tiburon. Her ashes will be scattered. Arrangements made by Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo.

Contributions preferred to St. Helena Hospital Foundation Cardiac Care, 650 Sanitarium, Deer Park, CA 94508.

John Raskin

John Raskin, Ph.D., M.D., 95, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Sacramento from complications following a stroke.

Dr. Raskin was born in Canada, to Zalman and Hannah, and moved with his family to Detroit, Mich., when he was 16. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1929 from the College of the City of Detroit and a Master of Arts from University of Detroit in 1934. Dr. Raskin received his Doctor of Philosophy in Bacteriology in 1935 from University of Michigan, his research contributing to the understanding of the tuberculosis organism. He earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1939 from University of Michigan, and interned at Highland Park Hospital in Detroit, where he started a family practice. In 1948, he moved to Vallejo, where he practiced general medicine and surgery at 646 Tennessee St., until 1980, when he retired and moved to Sacramento. Dr. Raskin gave generously to help build Vallejo General Hospital. After 40 years of general practice, he was involved in pancreatic cancer research in his private Sacramento laboratory.

Survivors are wife, Virginia; sisters, Thelma (Tebe) Blumenfield and Minnie Singer; children, Paul D.; Ruth Raskin Owens, Richard J., Martha Raskin Criswell and Fred Wheeler; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held Nov. 10 for family and friends in his Sacramento home.

Contributions preferred to Sutter General Hospital or a favorite charity.

Jean Singleton

(April 16, 1923 -- Feb. 10, 2002)

Jean Singleton, 78, of Winters, died Sunday in a Davis hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Singleton was born in Sacramento, and lived in Winters the past 26 years. She was primarily a housewife, but from 1979-1984, she worked part-time at the University of California at Davis.

Survivors are her husband of 58 years, Joe, of Winters; sons, Patrick of Benicia, and Jeff of Winters; and grandson, Andrew.

At her request, no services will be held. Inurnment in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Sacramento. Arrangements by Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia.

Contributions preferred to Winters Library Fund.

Lynn Mays

July 6, 1926 -- Oct. 3, 2002

Lynn Mays, 76, died Oct. 3 in Lakeport.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., she was a Lakeport resident who lived in Lake County for the past 34 years; prior to that she lived in Vallejo.

She was a homemaker for 57 years and was active within the Southern Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching and dealing with the children of the church.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and cooking for her family and loved ones.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Thayer Mays of Lakeport; son, Allen (Quinetta) of Lakeport; daughter, Lenita (Michael) Drury of Denver; sisters, Anita Comp of Newharmony, Utah; Alma (Julian) Compton of Morton, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 7, with a funeral following at 11 a.m. at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, 1625 High St., Lakeport. Burial will follow at Upper Lake Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Lake County, 1717 S. Main St., Lakeport,  Calif. 95453; or the Alzheimer's Association Northern California, 2065 West El Camino Real, Suite C, Mountain View,  Calif. 94040.
