Henry Tobias Jr.

(Nov. 8, 1938 -- Feb. 5, 2002)

Henry M. Tobias Jr., 63, died Tuesday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond, Va., following a long illness.

Tobias was born in Sumpter, S.C., and was a Vallejo resident for 20 years.

He served in the U.S. Army for 26 years, serving in Vietnam and Germany. After retiring from the military, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Benicia for 10 years, before retiring in 1994.

Mr. Tobias was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, who died in 1991.

He is survived by his daughter Cheri Tobias of Colorado; sisters Patricia Eifert and Kaye Bolin, both of Escondido; brothers Fred and Jim of Virginia, Robert of  South Carolina and Tom of  Pennsylvania; grandchildren Christopher Tobias, Aaron Valenzuela, Breanna Tobias and Ronald Tobias, Jr.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and entombment will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Cornils presiding. Colonial Chapels handling arrangements.

Contributions preferred to National Cancer Institute, Public Inquires Office, Bldg. 31, Room 10A31, 31 Center Dr., MSC 2580, Bethesda, Md., 20892-2580.

Johnnie Teske

(Nov. 8, 1900 -- Feb. 27, 2002)

Johnnie Jewell Teske, 101, died Wednesday at Sunbridge Care Center in Fairfield, after a long illness.

Mrs. Teske was born in  Texas, and had been a Vallejo resident since 1952. She was a homemaker, and a member of Mare Island Navy Yard Unit 550, American Legion Auxiliary.

Her husband, Martin preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1991.

Mrs. Teske is survived by her nieces, Wanda Logan of  Oklahoma; and Jean Pfiefer of Montana.

Private family services were held. Private inurnment at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.

Arrangements made by Colonial Chapels, Vallejo.

Nathan Steinberg

Jan. 21, 1919 -- May 28, 2002

Nathan Steinberg, 83, died at David Grant Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base after a short illness.

Mr. Steinberg, also known as "Ted," was born in New York and was a Benicia resident for 13 years.

He worked for the Teamsters Union for 30 years, primarily working for Merchants Trucking. He retired in 1974. Mr. Steinberg was also a World War II veteran and Army sergeant.

He was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel; the Vallejo Elks Lodge No. 559; Jewish War Veterans Chapter 777; Contra Costa Radio Club and Teamsters Union.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, who died July 17, 1996.

Survivors include his sons, Lou (Julia) of Petaluma; Mark (Helen) of Clayton; Elliot (Carolyn) of Concord; and grandchildren, Robert, Melissa, Sheila and Aaron, and one great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be held 11 a.m., June 2 at Beth Shalom Cemetery in Vallejo. Rabbi Leah Sudran of B'nai Israel in Petaluma will be officiating. Burial at Beth Shalom Cemetery.

Arrangements made by direction of Colonial Chapels, Vallejo.

Edward Marlewski

Aug. 11, 1934 -- Nov. 16, 2002

Edward Marlewski, 68, died Nov. 16 at a local hospital after a short illness.

Mr. Marlewski was born in Chicago, moved to California in 1965 and was a Vallejo resident for 20 years.

He worked as a systems specialist for Fireman's Fund Insurance in San Rafael for 35 years before retiring in 1992.

Mr. Marlewski was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was also a member of Loyal Order of Moose in Vallejo and a member of SIRS.

He was an avid bowler. He loved to spend time with family, friends and his animals.

He is survived by his partner of 18 years, Sally Benson of Vallejo; daughter, Kim DeMascole; brother, Mark Marlowe of Berwyn, Ill.; and granddaughter, Alyssa DeMascole.

Private family services were held. Private inurnment.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 1652 West  Texas St., Suite 110, Fairfield,  Calif. 94533.

Claude Settle

June 18, 1913 -- March 27, 2003

Claude Settle, 89, died March 27 at home with his family by his side.

Mr. Settle was born in Fredricktown, Miss., and was a Napa resident.

At age 17 he left home and hitch hiked to Holly,  Colo., where he began his restaurant career as a dishwasher and made his way to short order cook. From there he went to Santa Barbara as a chef.

In 1942, he moved to Vallejo to work at Mare Island as a shipfitter and when he left he opened the Chateau. Mr. Settle was a pioneer in the Vallejo Restaurant Industry. His establishment included: The Annex Coffee Shop, AGE Cafeteria, The Grotto, Claude's Place which included Claude's Back Door, The Redwood Inn and the Ritz Nightclub, with partner and best friend, the late Bill Edmond.

Mr. Settle also brought headliner bands to Vallejo, including Guy Lombardo, Little Richard and The Ink Spots.

In 1973, he moved to the ranch in Napa. He raised hogs and tomatoes that weighed up to 31/2 pounds. He enjoyed all the wild life on the ranch; deer, ducks, geese, fox, bobcats, raccoons and turkeys. Another great love of Mr. Settle's was his fire place which would burn up to 10 cords a year. He was an avid hunter and would make numerous trips to Colorado and Nevada with friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Claudia of Napa; his son, Lloyd of Napa; his granddaughter, Heather of Vallejo and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private family services were held. Arrangements were made under the direction of Richard Pierce Funeral Services, Napa.

Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to the Napa Valley Sheriff Posse Equipment Division( 252-6121) and Hospice of Napa Valley.
