Charles Gonyer

Feb. 4, 1926 -- May 24, 2002

Charles A. Gonyer, 76, died in a hospital after a long illness.

Born in Rodeo, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Gonyer was a merchant seaman with the Sailors Union of Pacific for 25 years, retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughters, Robbie (Mike) Penney and Paula (Phil) Wender, both of Bakersfield; Juanita (John) House of North Carolina; sons, Brian (Judith) of Oceana; Ross (Heather) of Taft; sister-in-law, Virginia of Napa; brother, David (Betty) of Chester; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

At his request no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered at sea west of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Arrangements made by Hosselkus Chapel in Crockett.

Ronald Asbe

Dec. 24, 1948 -- March 22, 2003

Ronald Asbe, 54, died at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo after a brief illness.

Mr. Asbe was born in San Diego and was a Suisun residence for 50 years.

He worked at Mare Island for 27 years, retiring in 1994.

He enjoyed building hot rods and NASCAR.

Mr. Asbe is survived by his wife, Fay of Suisun; daughters, Bambi of Madera; Amber of Fairfield; son, Kelly of Suisun; sister, Anna Lou Hensley of Richmond, Ky.; brother, Howard Jr. of Bloomfield, N.M.; and one grandchild.

Memorial service will be held 5 p.m. March 28 at 1030 Barrows Drive, Suisun. Inurnment will be private.

Arrangements made under the care of Fairfield Funeral Home.

Leora Thomas

Feb. 24, 1928 -- May 22, 2002

Leora "Lee" M. Thomas, 74, died last Wednesday at Sutter Solano Medical Center in Vallejo.

Born in Meridian, Miss., she was a Vallejo resident.

She was in the U.S. Navy at the Oakland Naval Base working as a cargo packer for more than 30 years. She was also a member of St. Basil's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Thomas is survived by her daughter, Kimberly of Oakland; one great-grandchild, and cousins in Vallejo, Vacaville,  Texas and Virginia.

Visitation will be held 1 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m., May 29 at Cooley & Riolo Mortuary, Inc., Vallejo. A Mass will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at St. Basil's Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo. Burial at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.

Modesto Soto

Oct. 25, 1930 -- July 21, 2002

Modesto Decena Soto, 71, died Sunday at Alta Bates Hospital Herrick Campus in Berkeley after a long illness.

Born in the Philippines, he was a resident of Vallejo for 13 years.

Mr. Soto was a salesman in the Philippines for 40 years.

He was a member of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church; and Villa de Bacolor of Northern California.

Mr. Soto loved to restore antique cars.

Survivors include his wife, Aurora of Vallejo; daughters, Cecile of Vallejo and Lourdes of the Philippines; sons, Eduardo (Mercedes) of San Diego and Albert (Leilani) of the Philippines; sisters, Amelia (JR) Reyes of Chicago; Carolina (Anselmo) Fajardo and Thelma (Moreno) Garcia, both of the Philippines; brother, Ricardo of the Philippines; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 25 and July 26 at Colonial Chapels in Vallejo. Vigil services will be held, 7 p.m. July 26 at Colonial Chapels. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered, 9 a.m. July 27 at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Philippines.

Russell Bryant

Oct. 19. 1961 -- March 21, 2003

Russell Orlando Bryant, 41, died at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo on March 21.

Mr. Bryant was born in San Francisco and was a Vallejo resident.

He worked at the Safety Office for 15 years.

He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. Bryant enjoyed cooking, being with children and helping others.

He is survived by his wife, Julia of Vallejo, father, Willie of  Texas; sister, Janice Smith of Suisun; brothers, Willie Jr. of Fairfield; Gregory Brown of Antioch; and Roy of Vallejo.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 30 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 601 Whispering Bay in Suisun. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. March 31 at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Claybon Lea, officiating. Burial will be in Olivet Cemetery, in Colma.

Arrangement made under the care of Fairfield Funeral Home.

Odis Sykes

Jan. 29, 1908 -- March 15, 2003

Odis Sibanna Sykes, 95, died Saturday at a local hospital after a long illness.

Born in  Texas, she had been a Vallejo resident 10 years.

She was a homemaker and a member of Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland.

She enjoyed painting, crocheting, sewing, playing the piano and singing.

Her brother, Woodie  Jones preceded her in death in the year 2000.

Mrs. Sykes is survived by her daughters, Leatrice of Vallejo and Lillie Sykes-McCoy of Fresno; sister, Iola Lee of Los Angeles; and grandchildren, Anthony and Rana Stewart, Fayette Lomax, Theresa, Leatrice and Tracy McCoy.

Service will be held at 2 p.m., March 21 at Colonial Chapels in Vallejo, with the Rev. Carl Lomax of Tristone Baptist Church in Bakersfield presiding. Burial in Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond.
