Chester Peace
Aug. 10, 1927 -- March 21, 2003
Chester L. Peace, 75, died March 21 after a short illness.
Mr. Peace, also known as "Chet", was a native of Oklahoma and a longtime resident of Benicia.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He worked as a foreman with Suba Manufacturing in Benicia for over 23 years, retiring in 1992.
Mr. Peace's hobbies included fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy of Benicia; daughter, Rosalie (Dennis) Kester of West Point; sons, Joseph (Dorothy) and John (Traci) both of Benicia; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to join his family in a celebration of his life at his home, 2 to 6 p.m. March 29.
Arrangements made under the care of Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia.
Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the Boys and Girls Club.
Robert Sivigny
Sept. 1, 1944 -- July 20, 2002
Robert J. Sivigny, 57, died Saturday at a local hospital in Vallejo.
Mr. Sivigny, also known as "Bob," was born in Augusta, Ga., and was a current resident of Vallejo.
He was a graduate of the University of San Francisco.
Mr. Sivigny was a veteran of the United States Navy during the Vietnam War and was retired from the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Chief Hospital Corpsman. While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Hancock.
He also worked for the United States Post Office for more than 27 years.
Survivors include his sister, Myrtle Horlacher, and his brother Henry Herbert Davis, both of Myrtle Beach, SC; two nephews and one niece.
Visitation will be after noon on July 24 at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. Funeral services will be held, 3 p.m July 24 at Twin Chapels Mortuary. Burial will be in Golden Gate National Cemetery
in San Bruno.
Lula Cooley
July 4, 1936 -- July 27, 2002
Lula Mae Cooley, 66, died at home July 27 after a long illness.
A native of Rosston, Ark., Ms. Cooley came to California in 1942 with her family.
She married Lawrence Lewis Sr. in October 1953, and during that time, had five children and worked at Sonoma State Hospital. Ms. Cooley moved to Europe, then New Mexico, where she had a sixth child, then to Germany, before returning to Vallejo in 1970.
Ms. Cooley attended Solano Community College during the 1970s. She also worked for Chevron Oil Company, initially as a keypunch operator, followed by a position in customer service. She retired in 1986.
She was a member of Christ Temple Apostolic Church of Vallejo.
Ms. Cooley was preceded in death by her daughter, Arielle Makela-Amili in 1991; and her brother, S.L Mixon, in 1983.
She enjoyed reading, light gardening, planting fruit trees and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her parents, Samuel and Maevelmon Mixon of Fairfield; sister, Clara Mae Haynie also of Fairfield; children, Philip (Marguerite) Lewis of Vallejo; Lawrence Lewis Jr. of Suisun City; Regina Lewis of Vallejo; Sandra Lewis of Sacramento; and Odell Kimbrough of Vallejo; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., August 1 at Skyview Funeral Chapel, Vallejo. A service conducted by her pastor, Bryan Harris will be held at noon, Aug. 12 at Emmanuel Apostolic Church, Vallejo.
Perless Jefferson
April 9, 1911 -- March 16, 2003
Pastor Perless Jefferson Sr., 91, died peacefully Sunday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo, after a long illness.
A native of Arkansas, he moved to Vallejo in 1943, as a result of his Army job which transferred him to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where he worked for the Chemistry Research Laboratory. He retired in 1957 and went full-time into ministry. He started his first pastoral ministry in 1952 in Benicia, he later returned to Vallejo and established Rehoboth Church of God in Christ, where he served until emeritus retirement in 2002.
He served as District Superintendent of Churches in the Vallejo-Richmond area 13 years and had six churches branch from his ministry. As a member of Northern California First Jurisdiction, Churches of God in Christ, he held many offices including administrative assistant and adviser to the Jurisdictional Prelate. He was honored as Pastor of the Year for 2001-2002.
Under his leadership, many community-based programs were created such as the Community Adolescent Mentorship Program (CAMP), church-site job training for Welfare-to-Work persons, mission programs aiding the less fortunate and homeless with food and shelter, and an acquisition of resources to provide a childcare enrichment program among other things.
He received many awards including the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award and the Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award from Touro University in 2000. He was also honored with a public commendation tribute for his outstanding record of community service, by Senators Wesley Chesbro and Pat Wiggins, in March of 2001.
Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Willie Mae Jefferson on Feb. 15, 1966 and his oldest son, Bernell on Jan. 7, 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Junelda; daughter, Rose (Benjamin) Bolds, sons, Pastor James (Joy) and Pastor Daniel II (Camille) all of Vallejo; brothers and sisters of the Obie Jefferson family and Bud Fields family; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Celebration services will be held 7 p.m., March 27 at Rehoboth World Outreach Center COGIC in Vallejo. Homegoing services will be held 11 a.m., March 28 at Old Path Miracle Cathedral COGIC in Vallejo. Burial in Skyview Memorial Lawn, Vallejo.
Dorothy Noel
Dec. 26, 1911 -- July 26, 2002
Dorothy Emma Noel, 90, died July 26 at a local hospital.
Mrs. Noel was born in Vallejo.
She married Leo Noel in 1951 and temporarily lived in Japan and Kentucky, before moving to Napa County. Leo died in 1996.
Mrs. Noel was a member of the Eastern Star and BPO Elks.
Mrs. Noel was also preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Risco.
She is survived by her son, Dan DeBonis of Winnemucca, Nev.; stepsons, Leon of Roseburg, Ore.; Leonard of Grove, Okla.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 at the chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail in Napa, with Pastor David Waters officiating. Private interment at Tulocay Cemetery, Napa.
