Carmen Alcantara

July 16, 1911 -- March 30, 2003

Carmen Gonzales Alcantara, 91, died at home Sunday after a short illness.

She was born in the Philippines and lived in Vallejo since 1967.

Mrs. Alcantara was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Veterans and Friends Association, Filipino Community of Solano County, United Senior Citizens Association and the Fil-Am Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emiliano Sr. in 1941 and her daughter, Purificacion.

She is survived by her daughters, Dory (Eric) Ramirez of Vallejo and Amor West of Michigan; sons, Leo (Mila) of  Texas; Emil Jr. (Mercy) of Florida; sister, Romana deLumen of Vallejo; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 2 and April 3 with a vigil at 7 p.m. at Colonial Chapels, Vallejo. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11 a.m., April 4 at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Vallejo. Burial in Imus Cemetery in Imus, Cavite, Philippines.

William Lewis

Aug. 15, 1935 -- March 23, 2003

William Callo Lewis, 67, died March 23 at Valley Care Medical Center in Pleasanton after a 10-month battle with Mesothelioma.

He was born in the Philippines and was a Vallejo resident for 23 years.

Mr. Lewis was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam era. He served 23 years, retiring in 1979 as storekeeper senior chief. After his retirement from the military he started his own real estate firm.

He was a member of St. Basil's Catholic Church, Carl Kreh Post 1123 of VFW, Fil-Am Retired U.S. Armed Forces Associations, Barangay Association, Sublime Lodge No. 5 F&AM in Benicia, and he was an active member of the Filipino community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thompson and Eustaquia, and his brother, Robert.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Lolly of Vallejo; daughters, Jennifer (Alfred) Landas of Pleasanton; Annabelle (George) Lewis-Barreto of Oceanside; sons, Thompson (Kimberly) Lucas of Minnesota; William "Bay" (Annabelle) of Carlsbad; sisters, Fabia DeLeon, Doris Krog, Mimi Fife and Molly Santos all of Vallejo; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Filipino American Retired U.S. Armed Forces Association (FARUSAFA) service at 7 p.m., March 27 at Colonial Chapels, Vallejo. Visitation will also be held 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a vigil at 7 p.m., March 28 also at the mortuary. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 1 p.m., Saturday at St. Basil's Catholic Church, Vallejo. Burial in All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo.

Henry Gregoire

Aug. 13, 1929 -- Dec. 10, 2002

Henry Gregoire Jr., 73, died Dec. 10, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, after a brief illness.

Mr. Gregoire was born in New Orleans, moved to Vallejo at age 13, and was a resident of Las Vegas at the time of his death.

He received his formal education in Vallejo. Mr. Gregoire worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard before relocating to Southern California, where he became employed at Long Beach Naval Station, until his retirement.

Mr. Gregoire was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward "Eddie" and Robert Lee, and his parents, Henry and Leontine Gregoire.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty; son, Jerry Sr. of Paramount; his daughter, Mona McClure of Carson; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Anselm Catholic Church followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Los Angeles.

Ludivina Crescines

Sept. 3, 1933 -- July 17, 2002

Ludivina Acostar Crescines, 68, died July 17 at a local hospital after a long illness.

She was born in the Philippines and was a 22-year Vallejo resident.

Mrs. Crescines was a homemaker. She was a member of Fellowship United Methodist Church and the Fil/Am Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard of Vallejo; daughter, Evelyn (Otis Sr.) Parker of Vallejo; sons, Julius (Gloria) of Vallejo; Robert (Elda) of Honolulu; Arnold (Susan) of Oxnard; sister, Rosita Fortin of Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A visitation and prayer service was held July 18 and 19 at Skyview Funeral Chapel, Vallejo. Another service was held July 20 at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Vallejo, with Pastor Tony Ubalde presiding. Burial at Skyview Memorial Lawn.

Malik Davis

Sept. 1, 1970 -- March 19, 2003

Malik Davis, 32, passed away at Vaca Valley Hospital in Vacaville after a brief illness.

Mr. Davis was born in Vallejo to Osby and Marva L. Davis.

He attended Vallejo public schools and was active in Little League and Babe Ruth baseball.

He graduated from Hogan High School in 1988, and traveled to Montgomery, Ala., to attend Alabama State University. While at Alabama State, he majored in engineering and participated in one of his life's passions, baseball.

Mr. Davis gave his life to Christ at age 12 and was baptized by the Rev. Carroll Broadfoot of Friendship Baptist Church. As an adult, Malik became a member of the Revival Center Ministries in Vallejo.

Malik married his high school friend and love of his life, Lynee Hillery on Oct. 8, 1995. Their daughter Maya Nichelle Davis was born May 4, 1999. Maya, the apple of her father's eye, kept Malik busy playing games, singing songs, reading and teaching her to use the computer.

He worked at Kaiser Hospital after returning from Alabama and later founded New Horizons Technology, a software development company based in Fairfield.

Mr. Davis loved music, spending hours writing and composing songs. He loved riding in his Silverado truck, working on his computers and most of all spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lynee; daughter, Maya; father, Osby; mother Marva; sister, Teresa Evans; brother, Jahmal; father-in-law, Leon; mother-in-law, Katherine, sisters-in-law, Teresa Hillery; and Felicia Webb; brother-in-law, Anthony Webb; grandmother, Albertha Davis; nine nieces and nephews; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. March 26 at Solano Valley Mortuary, 2590 N.  Texas St., Fairfield. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. March 27 at Union Baptist church, Vallejo with Pastor Ricky Nutt. Burial will follow.

Thelma Johnson

Aug. 20, 1920 -- June 25, 2002

Thelma Amelia Johnson, 81, of Bellingham, Wash., died June 25.

She was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Karl and Margaret Rydell who later preceded her in death. She had previously lived in Vallejo for 20 years.

Mrs.  Johnson was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church; Sons of Norway; Wives of Submarine Veterans of World War II; Navy Fleet Reserve Auxiliary and a lifetime member of the Good Sam RV Club. She was also a volunteer at Bellingham Senior Center.

Her brothers, Ronald and Robert Rydell, and sister, Mary Cossman also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, E.T. "Johnny"  Johnson of Bellingham, Wash., whom she married 56 years ago at St. Vincent's Church in Vallejo; sons, John (Michelle) of Vista; Gilbert of Santa Rosa; daughters, Cheryl Pianka of Lynne, Mass.; Judy (Roger) Cash of Bellingham, Wash.; Paulette (Richard) Newberry of Napa; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Donations may be made to The Hospice Program or the Sacred Heart Church.
