Josephine Abara

May 19, 1926 -- Feb. 19, 2003

Josephine M. Abara, 76, died Wednes-day at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center - Walnut Creek after a brief illness.

She was born in New Orleans and was raised in Mansura, La. She moved to the Vallejo/Fairfield area after high school and was a Fairfield resident for 37 years.

Mrs. Abara worked for the Fairfield Suisun Unified School District at Armijo High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Antiro, whom she married in the early 1940s; and her sons, Bentora and Antiro.

Survivors include her daughters, Corazon Banks-Davis of Oakland; Indrikita  Jones of Pleasant Hill; sons, Michael, Sr. of Fairfield; Andres of Arkansas; mother, Ivory Cabo of Vallejo; brother, Lucas Holmes of Vallejo; an aunt, 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. with a vigil at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 West  Texas St., Fairfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1050 N.  Texas St., Fairfield. Father Erwin Mesiona of Holy Spirit Catholic Church presiding. Burial in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery, 1707 Union Ave., Fairfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mission Solano, 740 Travis Blvd., Fairfield, CA 94533.

Lee Wheeler

Jan. 26, 1954 -- Jan. 7, 2003

Lee David Wheeler, 48, died Jan. 26 in Vallejo after a year-long illness.

He was born in Gold Beach, Ore., and lived in Vallejo for the past 20 years.

Mr. Wheeler trained in waste water treatment. He was a volunteer fireman for a number of years and was a past member of the Cordelia Fire Department.

He enjoyed computers, hiking, dinosaurs and other outdoor activities.

He is survived by his father, Ernest Sr. of Reedsport, Ore.; brother, Ernest Jr. of Walnut Creek; sisters, Jeanne of Beaver, Ore. and Jane Long of Albany, Ore.

An open house and celebration of life will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22 at 1775 Countrywood Court, Walnut Creek. A Western style dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. Please bring pictures and mementos. Interment took place in Reedsport, Ore.

Arrangements made by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, Fairfield.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

James Snyder

Nov. 7, 1932 -- Feb. 17, 2003

James Vincent Snyder, 70, of Citrus Heights, died in the presence of his family Monday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Roseville.

Born in the township of Harmony in Rock County, Wyo., he owned and operated a coffee shop and caf/ for several years. He also served in the U.S. Navy for three years during the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mayme and John; his first wife and mother of his eight children, Joann Williams Snyder; his son, John; and his siblings, Maryel (Mel) Neumiller, Evelyn Quade, Gwenellen Sauerzopf, John and Kenneth Snyder.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Elaine of Citrus Heights; children, Deborah (Gordon) Barlow of Vallejo; Mary (Mark) James of Sacramento; James (Ellen) of Brigham, Utah; Thomas (Molly) of Davis; Victoria (Michael) Stanwood of Ridgecrest; Susan (Jerry)  Jones of Walnut Creek; Joann of Vallejo; stepchildren, Debbie (Gary) Smylie of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Tracy Franklin of Joppa, Minn. and Diana Franklin of Fairfield. Other survivors include his siblings, Dorothy (Thomas) Botsford, Eugene (Theresa), Jerome (Ruby); 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Rosary and vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. Visitation will also be held noon to 9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the mortuary. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m., Feb. 24 at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Vallejo. Burial will follow in All Souls Catholic Cemetery, Vallejo. Fr. Pat Stephenson of Holy Family Parish, American Canyon will officiate all services.

Contributions preferred to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Patricia Moore

Dec. 8, 1940 -- Feb. 19, 2003

Patricia A. Moore, 62, died Wednesday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo after a brief illness.

She was born in North Carolina and lived in Vallejo most of her life. She was a social worker for Contra Costa County and she was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Karren (Donald) Moore-Jordan and Tonya of Vallejo; Shyrlcq (Matt) Bolander of Vallejo; sons, Michael (Anna) of Elk Grove; Rondekka (Hang) of Hayward and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo, with Pastor Al Marks of First Baptist Church officiating the ceremony.

Arrangements made by Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo.

Howard Worrell

March 16, 1949 -- Feb. 11, 2003

Howard "Ed" Edmund Worrell III, 53, died at home Feb. 11 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Lancaster, Pa., and lived in Vallejo.

Mr. Worrell served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard until its closure Feb. 1, 1980.

He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, camping and barbecuing.

Mr. Worrell was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Mathies in September 2002 and his father, Howard, Jr.

He is survived by his daughters, Kristin of Vallejo and Michelle of Fairfield; son, Jeffrey of Vallejo; mother, Geraldine Boaz of Medford, Ore.; sisters, Judith Worrell-Payne and Beverly Williams of Kuna, Idaho; Joyce Pine of Montague; and his brother, Scott of Somis.

A memorial will be held 1 p.m., Feb. 22 at Wiggins-Knipp Funeral Home in Vallejo, with the Rev. Rick Powers presiding. Private inurnment.

Cora Walker-Nelson

Jan. 2, 1902 -- Nov. 11, 2002

Cora Walker-Nelson, 100, died Nov. 11 at Sunbridge Care Center in Vallejo after a long illness.

Also known as, "Mommy Nelson," she was born in Ozan, Ark. and was a current resident of Vallejo.

Mrs. Walker-Nelson was a farmer and homemaker in Arkansas for more than 71 years. In addition, she made and sold her own ceramics and quilts.

She was usher and member of St. Peter CME Church in St. Peter, Ark. , served as a stewardess at the Miles Chapel, CME Church in Texarkana, Ark., and Oldest Senior Mother of the Vallejo Temple COGIC.

Mrs. Walker-Nelson enjoyed ushering at church, making ceramics, quilts and crafts, and traveling, singing and listening to gospel songs.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Hazel Nelson of Vallejo; sisters, Minnie Green of Phoenix, Girlean Taylor, Oree Boyd, Gracie Larkin, all of Texarkana, Ark.; brother, Jesse Walker of Los Angeles; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Nov. 20 at Cooley & Riolo Mortuary, Vallejo. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 at Cooley and Riolo Mortuary with Elder Floyd Stewart officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Ozan, Ark.
