Helen Shouse

Oct. 12, 1915 -- March 18, 2003

Helen Shouse, 87, died Tuesday at a local convalescent hospital after a long illness.

She was born in San Bruno and had been a Vallejo resident for 50 years.

Mrs. Shouse was the owner and operator of a retail variety store for 10 years; she owned two family businesses in Vallejo. She also worked as a keypunch operator at Benicia Arsenal and as a secretary at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Skyview Memorial Lawn.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Shouse was preceded in death by her husband, Herb and her brothers, Herman and Marvin "Mo" Dubnoff.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Jerry) Watson of Vacaville; son, Herb (Carol) of Sacramento; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., with a funeral following at 2 p.m., March 21 at Skyview Garden Chapel, Vallejo. Burial will follow.

Marilyn Virginia Gordon

June 9, 1916 -- March 27, 2003

Marilyn Gordon, 86, died Thursday at her home after a long illness.

She was born in, and remained a life-time resident of, Vallejo.

Besides being a homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, animals, reading and traveling. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was fond of visiting family and friends, and maintained a sense of humor to the end.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Gordon.

Survivors include her daughters, Joanne Mannel and Susan Byrum; son Larry R. (Alette Brooks) Gordon; and brother Albert Lawrence all of Napa. She was also blessed with five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled from 4 p.m.. to 8 p.m. on April 1, at Skyview Funeral Chapel, 200 Rollingwood Dr., Vallejo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. April 2, at Skyview Funeral Chapel. Burial will take place at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo.

Harry Nixon

Jan. 28, 1917 -- March 23, 2003

Harry A. "Bud" Nixon, 86, of Napa died March 23 in a local hospital.

Mr. Nixon was born in Sisson, later called Mt. Shasta, and worked for more than 43 years for the Bank of America before retiring as vice president and management of Eureka Main in 1981.

He graduated from Mt. Shasta High School in 1934. He attended University of California, Berkeley before going to work with Bank of America in Susanville in 1938. He married Inez Cristofani on Sept. 1, 1940.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945.

He lived in Benicia from 1949 to 1965. His career with the bank took him to several locations in his 40-plus years, including Chico, Oroville, McCloud, Alturus, Benicia, Martinez, Vallejo and finally to Eureka when he retired in 1981. After his retirement, he moved to Napa in 1998.

He was a member of the Oroville Rotary Club, and former director with The United Way and Easter Seals. While living in Benicia, he was a member of the 20/30 Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Inez, of Napa; son, James Nixon of Napa; daughter, Jackie Holland of Murietta; sister, Lois Proctor of Redding; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 27 at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 901 West Second St., Benicia. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. March 27 at the mortuary. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. March 28 at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Redding. Family prefers donations to the donor's favorite charity.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Lawrence Hope

June 26, 1937 -- March 30, 2003

Lawrence "Larry" Andrew Hope, 65, died March 30.

Mr. Hope was born in St. Paul, Minn., to Lawrence Sr. and Kay Hope.

He is a graduate of St. Vincent's High School, class of 1955. After high school he graduated from the Maritime Academy in 1958.

He later joined the U.S. Navy and served for 20 years before retiring as Lt. Commander. During his time in the service, Mr. Hope was awarded the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (all with Valor) and the Vietnamese Medal of Honor.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Joyce; his daughter, Janelle; sons, Chris and Kevin (Beata); brothers, Jim, Bob and David; grandsons, Joshua and Boris and many extended family members and friends.

Donald Shipman

Jan. 10, 1942 -- March 30, 2003

Donald "Don" Shipman, 61, died March 30 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo after a long illness.

He was born in Napa and raised and educated in Benicia. He was a resident of American Canyon for 40 years.

Mr. Shipman worked for the State of California as a toll collector, toll sergeant and toll lieutenant on the Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dunbarton, Richmond-San Rafael and San Mateo Bridges. He retired in 1997 with over 30 years of service.

He enjoyed working with youngsters in the Little League and was a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A's, NASCAR racing and traveling in his motorhome.

He volunteered many years with the American Canyon West Vallejo Little League. His first year with the Little League began in 1972 when the original park was near Mare Island. He served on the board of directors from 1973 to 1989.

He was involved in building the four fields at the new park and has held many positions within the board of directors. He has served as president, treasurer, coach, manager, field coordinator, overall field coordinator and candy chairman. Mr. Shipman spent many hours at the park mowing grass, fixing equipment, cooking in the canteen, umpiring games and many other volunteer duties.

Mr. Shipman was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Ruth Shipman.

Survivors include his wife, Janet "Jan" of American Canyon; his sons, Robert (Stacy) of American Canyon and Donald "Joe" of Vacaville; sister, Donna Brown of Napa; four grandchildren; niece and nephew.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on April 4 at Chapel of the Chimes, 2383 Napa Vallejo Highway, Napa.

Contributions are preferred to the American Canyon West Vallejo Little League, 11G Poco Way, American Canyon.

Arrangements made under the direction of Struble Family Funeral Services, Vallejo.
