William Edward Cullum

Nov. 11, 1931 - Sept. 22, 2003

William Edward "Bill" Cullum, 71, of Benicia passed away Monday in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was born in North Hollywood, Ca., and was a Benicia resident for more than 50 years.

Mr. Cullum was in the U.S. Army during the Korean war. He then worked as a planner and estimator on Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Benicia Holy Ghost Society and the Planner, Estimators, Progressman and Schedulers Association (PEPS). He enjoyed aviation, scuba diving, hang gliding, computers, music and reading.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Deward G. Cullum Jr. Survivors include his stepdaughters, Tami A. Silva of Fairfield and Cathleen F. Wojan of Benicia; sons, William R., Christopher J. and Joshua M. Cullum, all of Benicia; stepson, Todd L. Silva; sisters, Dewina Lacey of Benicia and Ruth Jo Hutchins of Eagan, Mn.; brother, Fred B. Cullum of Livermore; grandchildren, Travis Edward Cullum and Jade Marie King; and long-time friend, Carol A. Hamby.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia. His ashes will be scattered at sea.

Mary M. Stinehoff

Dec. 8, 1913 - Sept. 20, 2003

Mary M. Stinehoff, 89, died Saturday at Heartwood Living Center in Vallejo.

John T. Faison

June 11, 1935 - Sept. 19, 2003

John T. Faison, 68, also known as "J.T.," died Sept. 19.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. with a quiet hour from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cooley and Riolo Mortuary, Vallejo. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Ashes will be scattered in a private ceremony.

Precila Garcia Macasieb

Jan. 16, 1912 - Sept. 20, 2003

Precila "Felicing" Garcia Macasieb, 91, died Saturday at a local hospital after a long illness. Born in Santa Barbara, Pangasinan, Philippines, Mrs. Macasieb was a resident of Vallejo for 22 years.

Peter M. Schmit

(March 3, 1916 - Sept. 15, 2003)

Peter M. "Pete" Schmit, 87, died Sept. 15 at his home in Benicia.

Edmond E. 'Rod' Gorden

Dec. 30, 1931 - Sept. 22, 2003

Edmond E. "Rod" Gorden, 71, passed away Monday in a local hospital after a short illness. He was born in Tulsa,  Oklahoma, and was a Benicia resident for over 60 years.

Troyle (Troy Lee) Blasingame

Sept. 22, 2003

Troyle (Troy Lee) Blasingame, 73, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at his home in Fairfield after a long illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends, and met his God bravely and at peace with this world.

Russell Grigg

Oct. 23, 1907 - Oct. 18, 2003

Russell Sydney Grigg, a lifelong resident of Vallejo, died peacefully at home with his niece Tana and her husband, Ken at his bedside. Mr. Grigg would have been 96 years old on Thursday. He was born in his parents home at 110 Capitol St.

Ferne Frances Vasconcellos

Nov. 17, 1926 - Oct. 8, 2003

Ferne F. Vasconcellos, 76, of Vallejo, passed away Wednesday in a local hospital after a short illness. She was born in Eugene, Oregon, and was a Benicia and Vallejo resident for over 30 years.

She worked for Pacific Bell in San Francisco for 20 years and most recently at JC Penney in the Sun Valley Mall for more than 20 years, retiring in 2001.

Ferne is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Haskett, and son-in-law, Robert, of Vallejo; brother, Oscar Bischoff of San Jose; lifelong friend, Lucille Bourquin; close friend and niece, Margaret Bacigalupi of Vallejo; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as countless friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth and Elsie, and her brother, Ruben.

She was a longtime member of Calvary Community Church in Benicia, where she oversaw the library.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and after 10 a.m. Monday at the mortuary. Her ashes will be scattered in the Sierra Mountains.

Ray Brashears

Oct. 19, 1932 - Oct. 19, 2003

Ray Edward Brashears, 71, passed away Tuesday in Benicia on his birthday.

Born in Lapanto, Ark., he lived in Benicia for more than 55 years. He was a retired Mare Island employee.

Mr. Brashears served as a Boy Scout Leader and Commissioner, City Civil Service Commissioner, Little League Coach and at one time he was also chairman of the Community Action Council. He belonged to the Capitol Lions Club and was also a volunteer fireman for many years. He was also Mare Island employee for many years and a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Paradine Brashears; father, James Paul Brashears; brothers, Hershal and Gary Brashears and son, David William Brashears.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Ann Brashears; sons, John Ray Brashears of Alabama and Paul Allen Brashears; daughters, Carrie Ann (Brashears) Reid of Maryland and Loray Lynn (Brashears) Robertson of Benicia; as well as 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward W. Koenig

Feb. 17, 1914 - Oct. 26, 2003

Edward W. Koenig, 89, of Benicia, passed away Sunday at Waterleaf Residence Home in Sacramento. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and lived in Benicia from 1944 until 2002 when he moved to be near his family.

Ed worked for the U.S. government for more than 25 years as an inspector, first with the Benicia Arsenal until it closed, then with the Department of the Army at Oakland Army Depot until retiring in 1964.

He was a member of the City Council from 1954 to 1958 and mayor of Benicia from 1956 to 1958. He was a committeeman and district chairman with the Boy Scouts of America; a member of the Benicia Senior Citizens, NARFE, St. Dominic's Church and the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers No. 1492.

He was an avid gardener and will be remembered by many for his famous vegetable garden in his back yard.

Ed is survived by his daughter, JoAnne (Jon) Marquardt of Sacramento; son, John Koenig of Sacramento; and grandchildren, Frank and Paul Marquardt and Johna and Shanna Koenig. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emily, in 1995.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel in Benicia and after 6 p.m. at St. Dominic's Church in Benicia. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic's Church. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Dominic's Church, followed by burial in St. Dominic's Cemetery. Family prefers donations to St. Dominic's School.

A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 at Benicia Veterans Memorial Hall.

Leonard Wolfer

Jan. 30, 1922 - Oct. 29, 2003

Leonard Wolfer, 81, of Benicia, passed away Wednesday at home following a brief illness.

Mr. Wolfer was born in Portland, Ore. and was a Benicia resident the past 22 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Benicia VFW. He was a store manager for more than 50 years at various locations including Toy World, Rasco Stores, SH Cress and Toy Supply.

Mr. Wolfer is survived by his wife of 60 years, Emma Jo; daughter, Suzanne (Steve) Miller; son, Dennis (Sandra) Wolfer; grandchildren, Daniel and Christine; and great-granddaughter, Alexis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, Benicia with Pastor Gary Bell of Benicia Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be private in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Contributions are preferred to the Benicia Lutheran Church or the Benicia VFW Scholarship Fund.
