Capt. Roderick Marshall

Jan. 22, 1931 - March 18, 2004

Roderick Marshall passed away peacefully on March 18, 2004, in Vallejo. He was surrounded by his family, who brought him love and peace during his final days.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley J. Marshall; son, Roderick Jr.; daughters, Kimberley A. Marshall and Deborah M. Marshall; grandchildren, Mark and Michelle Johanson and Zane Palermo; sister, Jill McPherson; brother-in-law, Brian McPherson; brother, Lee Horner; and his best friend for 62 years, Edward Boyle.

Roderick was born Jan. 22, 1931, in Oakland, moving to San Francisco as a young child and then to Vallejo, where he spent his formative years. After graduating from St. Vincent High School in 1948, Roderick entered the California Maritime Academy. He received his maritime engineering degree in 1951. He then entered the Merchant Marines as an engineering officer during the Korean War, serving under hazardous duty. After one year he joined the U.S. Navy as an officer, lieutenant junior grade, serving his country until the end of the war. He then went to work for Worthington Corp. as a sales engineer.

He met and married the love of his life, Shirley, in 1956. After living in Vallejo for a short time, they moved to Southern California to further his career and to begin their family. Roderick attended night school for eight years at UCLA, eventually receiving his M.B.A.

Roderick moved up the ladder and became the youngest regional manager in the history of Worthington Corp. In 1965 he received an "Outstanding Young Man of America" award for public service and business accomplishment from the National Chamber of Commerce.

Roderick left Worthington Corp. after 17 years and began working at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. After being promoted to the Concord Naval Weapons Station, he and Shirley returned to Vallejo, where he remained for the remainder of his life.

Roderick was a member of the Naval Reserves for 27 years, retiring as a naval captain. He was affectionately known as "Roddy." He enjoyed golf, poker and staying abreast of current events, and he always said his two passions in life were spending time on the water and enjoying his family. He will be remembered as a man of unforgettable character and for having an enormous sense of humor.

We will never forget you, Roddy.

A memorial service will be at noon Friday at Tulocay Cemetery, 411 Coombsville Road, off of Silverado Trail, Napa. A reception will follow at the River City Restaurant, 505 Lincoln Ave., Napa.

Clemente Anies

Nov. 23, 1919 - April 2, 2004

Clemente Anies, 84, of Benicia passed away Friday in a Vallejo hospital after a short illness. He was born in the Philippines and lived in San Francisco and Union City since 1967 before settling in Benicia six years ago.

Clemente worked as a supervisor for Koret of California for 18 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the V.F.W. He was also a member of St. Dominic's Church in Benicia and was past president of Caoayanis of California.

Clemente was survived by his wife of 47 years, Matilde of Benicia; daughter, Catherine Anies-Campisi of  Washington; sons, Robert of San Francisco and Rene of Benicia; sister, Hermenia Anies-Castillo of the Philippines; and grandchildren Christopher, Casandra, Robert, Rosanna, Royce, Ciara and Romyn.

Vigil services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Passalacqua Funeral Chapel, 901 West Second St., Benicia. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic's Church, 475 East I St., Benicia. Burial will follow in St. Dominic's Cemetery. Visitation will be at the mortuary from noon to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Modesto Cristobal Galicia

Nov. 4, 1926 - Dec. 25, 2003

On Christmas Day, 2003, Modesto Cristobal Galicia left this world peacefully to join in the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

After a long illness Modesto C. Galicia, better known as "Burt the Barber," passed away peacefully at his home on December 25, 2003.

He was the fourth of 10 children born to Pedro Galicia (deceased) and Petra Cristobal (deceased). Sisters are Rufina Mayugba of New Jersey and Anita Tumboken of Riverside; brothers, Eulalio (deceased), Agripino and Elias of Vallejo, Joaquin (deceased) and Eusebio of the Philippines.

In his parting he leaves his wife of 49 years, Maura Salvador Galicia; sons, Modesto Ray and Joseph Alan; daughters, Priscila (Felix Zambrano), Maureen (Don Doria), Bernadette (Jim Stasek) and Marites (Ron Johnson), all from Vallejo; and grandchildren, Divina, Alex, Stefanie, Justin, Chris, Phyleeza, Tiffany, Raymond, David, Jimmy, Khamarron and Ronni. Before his passing he was able to greet and enjoy his only great-grandchild, Annalise. His daughter, Petra Dymphna, preceded him. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

In his life he served the U.S. Navy for 20 years and was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. He joined the Merchant Marines and worked for the Vallejo City Unified School District for 10 years. He also worked as a barber for over 30 years, giving good haircuts to his family and friends. He loved to fish, garden in his backyard and watch the World Wrestling Federation and boxing.

He was a member of the St. Vincent's Parish, Sekder Day Pangasinan, San Carlenians of Pangasisnan, Knights of Columbus, and past member of the Filipino Community, Filipino-American Catholic Association, Filipino-American Progressive Organization and FARUSAFA.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, from 1 to 9 p.m. and on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil at Colonial Chapels in Vallejo. A Mass of Catholic burial will be held at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Vallejo at 11 a.m. on Jan. 3, 2004.

Parrish Tucker Jr.

May 17, 1962 - May 29, 2004

Parrish Tucker Jr., 42, of Vallejo died at home May 29, 2004.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today with a quiet hour from 7 to 8 p.m. at Cooley & Riolo Mortuary, Vallejo. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cooley & Riolo Mortuary, with Minister Willie Humphrey officiating. Burial will be at Camellia Memorial Lawn.

Michael Vega

Nov. 15, 1962 - March 20, 2004

Michael Vega, 41, of Lathrop, died Saturday in  Washington, D.C.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary Sunday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Father Sebastian Meyer, O. Carm. officiating. Burial will be at St. Alphonsus Cemetery.

Kurt Rosslyn

Oct. 4, 1934 - March 19, 2004

Kurt Rosslyn went to be with the Lord on March 19, 2004 after complications from cardiac arrest on July 15, 2002. He was preceded in death by his mother Elsie and his dad Joel.

Kurt was born Oct 4, 1934 in Jakobstad, Finland. He came from Finland with his parents to New York in 1936 and lived in the Bronx, New York. In 1941, he and his parents moved to Vallejo. He worked at Napa Valley College for 20 years and retired in 1997.

Mr. Rosslyn went to school in Vallejo. At age 25, he met his former wife Carol Young. He is survived by his wife of 26 years: Barbara Joy Rosslyn; five children: Rose, Trina, Teresa, Keith and Leonard; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother: Robert (and wife Roberta) Rosslyn of Vacaville and Raimo (and wife Annikki) Rosslyn of Finland and many nieces and nephews.

A victim of child abuse, Kurt managed to make a good life for himself and his wife Barbara through his faith in God. He overcame alcohol addiction and was sober for 28 years through AA and his faith.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lower Lake Cemetery, Lower Lake,  Calif. Donations may be made to help abused children in Kurt's name.

Joyce Marie McNeil

Aug. 12, 1950 - March 23, 2004

Joyce Marie McNeil, 53, died Tuesday at home after a long illness. Born in Galveston,  Texas, Mrs. McNeil was a resident of Vallejo.

She worked as a Muni Transit Operator for 14 years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harry McNeil of Vallejo; daughter, Ronda Word of Richmond,  Texas; stepdaughters, Andrea and Crystal McNeil, both of Vallejo; sons, Marquis and Shannasar McNeil, both of Vallejo; sisters, Ceilia J. Plummer of Vallejo and Cynthia Plummer of Oakland; brother, Michael Plummer Jr. of Galveston,  Texas; and grandchildren, Alona and Myles Word.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Wiggins-Knipp funeral home, Vallejo, where members of the John S. Beverly Lodge IBPOEW No.1268 Vallejo will conduct lodge services at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Second Baptist Church, Vallejo with Pastor Fleetwood Irving officiating. She will then be shipped to Fields Funeral Home, Galveston,  Texas for services. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Galveston,  Texas.

Desmond T. Jeffers

March 26, 2004

Desmond T. "Jeff" Jeffers, 65, of Martinez passed away at his home Friday after a long illness.

A Native of Reno, Nev., Mr. Jeffers has been a Martinez resident since 1997. Prior, he resided in Vallejo from 1939 until his moving to Martinez. Mr. Jeffers served in the U.S.A.F. and worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a supervisor/painter for a total of 35 years federal civil service.

Mr. Jeffers is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Martinez; two sons, Stuart Jeffers of Vallejo and Ricky Jeffers of Martinez; one daughter, Jaylene Kennedy of Fairfield; one sister, Victoria "Vickie" Clark of Napa.

Mr. Jeffers was pre-deceased by his parents, Desmond C. and Ida Jeffers.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, Stuart, Veronica, Ronnie, Angela, Matthew and Robert.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Skyview Memorial Chapel, Vallejo, with the Rev. Craig Patterson of Vallejo First United Methodist Church and Hospice Chaplain Jurgen Schmitz officiating. Interment will take place at All Souls Cemetery, Vallejo. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Skyview Memorial Chapel, Vallejo. The family suggests contributions to Kaiser Martinez Hospice, Martinez.
