Everett Ray Yonce
Little Shasta Valley native, Everett Ray Yonce, 90, passed away Feb. 13, 2003.
Everett was born July 8, 1912 to George and Clara Belle Yonce. He and his wife of 19 years, Violet Andor Lincoln Yonce, resided at Smith River from the time of their marriage until last November, when they moved to Sequim, Wash.
Everett proudly served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He retired as a mechanic from Signal Trucking Company in Oakland.
During his retirement years he continued working in all the trades he loved so well, to invent new processes and tools in the areas of welding, mechanics and electronics.
Survivors include his wife, Violet, of Sequim; sons and daughters in-law, James A. and Ann Yonce of Rancho Cordova and Kenneth R. and Janice Yonce of Port Angeles, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Helen E. and Jack Witschger of Sequim; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Everett was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; one grandson; and his brother, Floyd L. Yonce.
At his request, there will be no funeral services, but he will be buried in the family plot at the Little Shasta Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Carolyn Francis McNair
Fort Jones resident, Carolyn Francis McNair, 60, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at the Madrone Hospice in Yreka, following a long battle with cancer.
Carolyn, known as "Carol" to her many friends, was born March 25, 1943 in Chehalis, Wash. to Frederick H. and Irma E. McNair, and was the youngest of six children. At the time, the family lived at Curtis in southwestern Washington State but moved to Tenino, Wash. in 1944 where Carol attended grade school. In 1951 the family moved to Centralia where she attended high school and junior college.
After college Carol worked in Seattle for several years then moved to Dallas, Texas where she attended the Dallas Art Institute. She started her professional career in Dallas but soon moved to Sacramento. It was there that she fully developed her unique artistic style and the "Seven Elements of Design" which she emphasized in her teaching and artwork. She also wrote a manuscript entitled "Basically the Basics," which is under consideration for publication.
Carol moved from Sacramento to Fort Jones over 20 years ago. Her paintings now hang in many homes and businesses throughout the valley and other west coast locations. She sincerely loved the valley and continued to paint on various media and conducted classes out of her studio home. She developed a unique product called "Wearable Art" which has been extremely popular.
Her students have gone on to careers in art and the teaching of art. She was exceptionally proud of how her students developed and that they kept in touch with her throughout the many years.
Carol felt she had a God given gift and that she must pursue (use) it and help others in developing their artistic gifts. She was chosen as a critique artist for the Southern Oregon Society of Artists and was in the process of writing a textbook on her Seven Elements of Design.
She loved her studio home, her many dear friends, students and admirers and Scott Valley with all her heart.
Survivors include siblings, Elaine Kilbourne of Spokane, Wash., Fred McNair of Desert Hot Springs, and Stephen McNair of Lakebay, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her family and many friends miss her dearly.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held 2 p.m., April 27 at the Scott Valley Berean Church, 134 Church Street in Etna. Carolyn's friend and previous pastor, Bill Birch, will conduct the service and all friends and admirers are invited to attend.
Frances Doris Wood
Mount Shasta resident, Frances Doris Wood, 79, passed away April 19, 2002 at Mercy Care Center in Mount Shasta of natural causes.
Services will be held 2 p.m., April 26 at Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel. Pastor Dennis Benfield of the Happy Valley Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park.
Frances was born May 6, 1922 in Vallejo. She attended schools in Etna and high school in Dunsmuir. She moved to Siskiyou County 15 years ago. Frances was a homemaker.
Frances was a supporter of Billy Graham Crusades and the 700 Club.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Wood of Mount Shasta; sons, Lance and Bill Wood, both of Mount Shasta; a sister, Maggie Petrovis of Mount Shasta; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Jimmie Robert Hurd
Lake Shastina resident, Jimmie Robert Hurd, 73, passed away at his home on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002.
Jim was born Jan. 23, 1929 in Brawley to George and Ellen Hurd. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Jim worked as a motor carrier specialist for the State of California for 28 years. He moved to Siskiyou County from Piercy five years ago and made his home in Lake Shastina. He was a member of Shastina Recovery.
Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley Hurd of Lake Shastina; children, Dale Hurd of Vallejo, Penne Usher of New Mexico, Maureen Brooks of Stockton, Paul Martin of Lockeford and Alan Martin of Napa; sister, Mary Taylor of Stockton; brother, Albert Hurd of San Jose; 11 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Tamela Marie Allen-Harrell
Quartz Valley resident, Tamela Marie Allen-Harrell 40, passed away on Oct. 18, 2002 at Redding Medical Center in Redding.
Tamela was born June 16, 1962 in San Francisco. She was married to Michael Harrell.
Tamela will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her husband Michael of Quartz Valley; survivors include a son, Douglas Strickland of Weed; father Charles Wesley Allen of Tacoma, Wash.; step-father, Don Meek of Etna; aunt Roberta Harrison of Antioch; aunt and uncle, Ruby and Richard Rasmussen of Willits; sisters and brothers in-law, Debra Allen/Cloud and Nick Cloud of Pine Grove, Cindy and Michael Hopkins of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers, Don and John Lowe, both of Keota, Okla. and Charles Allen of Tacoma.
In addition she is survived by cousins, Joe Hagen, Michael Sanchez, Diana Barker, Robert Smith, Wynette Harrison and Charlie Harrison; nieces and nephews, Nicole Cloud, Jessica Lowe, Cory Ledbetter, Jeffery Roberts, Donald Gene Lowe, Colby Lowe and Robert Cloud.
Tamela was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Ann Dawson/Meek in June of 1996; and a nephew, Michael Lowe.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Nov. 2 at Girdner Funeral Chapel.

Michael Roy Healy
Michael Roy Healy, 57, of Roseburg, Ore., recently passed away at his home.
Michael was born Aug. 8, 1945 to Harold and Patricia Healy in San Francisco. He was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad for 30 years and for Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad.
Mike was the local president of the Vietnam Veterans; and was director of the Stray Angels Car Club.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Monna; daughters, Shannon Nugent and Catherine Healy, both of Roseburg; three grandsons; a twin brother, Pat Healy of Yreka, and brother, Mark Healy of Weed; and a sister, Darlene Kingsley of Shingletown.
Services will be held 11 a.m., April 19 at Long & Shukle Memorial Chapel with a celebration of life immediately following the service at the Winston VFW Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
Brenda Eileen Cole
Dunsmuir resident, Brenda Eileen Cole, 76, passed away Jan. 13, 2003.
Brenda was born Sept. 27, 1926 in England to Stanly and Rose Crewe. She worked for many years in market research. After retiring, she came to the United States in 1989, enjoyed traveling and was always eager to learn about life and its meaning. She had lived in Dunsmuir for the past 13 and a half years.
Some of her most precious moments were spent with her four Pekinese dogs who preceded her. She loved animals and tried to help them whenever she could.
Brenda enjoyed gardening, antiques and researching her family's genealogy. In later years she spent much of her time writing, and was in the process of having her first book published.
Survivors include her two daughters, Jane Riley and Amanda Cullen; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Other grandchildren may have survived her, of which are unknown.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Stanly Crewe; and sisters, Phyllis Gill, Iris Simmons and Mona Vincent, all of Bristol (and surrounding areas) in England.
Donations in Brenda's memory, may be made to the Humane Society.
Wilson Hall
Long-time Grenada resident, Wilson Hall, 86, passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002.
Wilson was born April 14, 1916 in Camden, N.J. to Harold and Amy Hall. He graduated from high school in 1936 in Pocatello, Idaho.
Wilson supported the war effort working as a machinist for Lockheed during World War II. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1973 making his home in Grenada.
Wilson and his wife, Marguerita owned and operated the Grenada Mercantile for 22 years. He was a model train enthusiast, spending many hours collecting, building and landscaping for the trains. He loved working in his yard tending to his plants and flowers.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerita Hall of Grenada; daughter and son-in-law, June and Lane Cook of Gazelle; son and daughter-in-law, Wilson and Chantel Hall of Montague; son Walter Hall of Montague; sister in-law, Rosey Hall of Anaheim; two nieces, Diane Hall Thomas of Anaheim and Loraine Hall Miller of Wyoming; grandchildren, Dalton and Emma Hall, Arianna and Gunnar Hall, Eddie and Dusty Arami; granddaughter and her husband, Miranda and Rod York; great-grandson, Ashton Tyler York.
Wilson was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Hall in 1993.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m., Nov. 1 at the Gazelle Cemetery.
