Hazel E. Montgomery

Albany, Ore. - Hazel Montgomery went to be with the Lord on Dec. 19, 2008, eight days before her 93rd birthday. She was born in Los Angeles,  Calif. to Kenneth an Edna Stream. She married Delbert Kraft in Sierra Madre,  Calif. After he died in 1980, she then married Frank Montgomery in 1982. She moved to Philomath from Fort  Jones in 2000. Later in 2006, she moved to Albany. She was living at Cambridge Terrace in Albany when she died. Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Marlene Washburn of Eddyville; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Tillie Kraft of Eddyville; sister, Vera Meyers of Lancaster,  Calif.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters. A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the Blodgett Community Church. Kirk Dutiel Stott

Yreka,  Calif. - Kirk Dutiel Stott passed on to be with his parents on Jan. 1, 2009. Kirk was born on July 18, 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea and later, in Vietnam. He is survived by an older brother, Mark of Danville,  Calif. and a younger brother, Greg Stott of Round Rock,  Texas; along with one niece, Megan Stott of  Texas; three nephews, Eric, Matt and Kevin Stott and Kevin’s wife, Adonia. He is also survived by one great-nephew, Steven Stott and two great-nieces, AmMathee and the apple of his eyes, Audrey Stott, all of Yreka. No services are planned.

Edward T. O’Connor

Sparks, Nev. - Edward was born on July 18,1923 to Sidney and Lois O’Connor in Yreka. He passed on Dec. 26, 2008 in Sparks, Nev. Ed grew up in Little Shasta Valley, Siskiyou County,  Calif. attending school in Montague and Yreka. During WW II he was a pilot with the 13th Army Air Force. A graduate of the University of California, Ed earned his CPA in  Washington State. He practiced in Grants Pass, Sun River, and John Day, Ore. and retired in Sparks, Nev. He was preceded in death by daughter, Karen. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis; sisters, Kathryn and Patricia and their families; son, Michael and daughter-in-law, Cinthya; daughter, Susan; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Oscar Dee McNew

Mount Shasta,  Calif. - Oscar Dee McNew of Mount Shasta passed away on Dec. 28, 2008 at home with family beside him. He was 81 years old and died of natural causes. Oscar was born on June 7, 1927 in Chickasha, Okla. and moved to Siskiyou County 40 years ago from  Oklahoma. He was a timber faller, fondly called “Big O” by fellow loggers. Oscar was a veteran of WW II, having served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Tangier. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing with his family and friends. Oscar was always a very caring man who loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Grace Alma King; sons, John (Jay) McNew, Douglas O. McNew and stepson, Carl Borba, all of Mount Shasta; stepdaughters, Rita Urban of Corning,  Calif. and Margie Borba of Weed; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inez Portlock of Sutherland, Ore. He was predeceased by his brother, Douglas McNew. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Debbie Bennett

Eagle Creek, Ore. - Debbie Bennett was found dead on Jan. 4, 2009 in Eagle Creek. Debbie was 46 years old. She was born on June 20, 1962 to George Jr. and Janette Bennett in Portland, Ore. Debbie worked at Eagle Creek In as a bartender. Debbie lived in Fairview, Ore. until living in Eagle Creek, Ore. for the last two years. Some of Debbie’s interests included camping, swimming and bowling. Survivors include a daughter,  Taylor Anne Bennett, of Eagle Creek, Ore.; mother, Janette Hockaday, of Eagle Creek; four brothers, Dan Bennett of Eagle Creek, Steve Bennett of Fairview, Ore., Austin Hockaday III of Damascus, Ore. and Jeremy Hockaday of Eagle Creek; and sister, Jennifer Kelly of Damascus, Ore. A service of remembrance was held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Ore. Private interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Gresham.

Elberta June Frey

Yreka,  Calif. - Elberta Frey, a three-year resident of Meadowlark Assisted Living Community in Yreka passed into new life Saturday evening, Jan. 10, 2009 surrounded by family. Elberta’s life began on June 2, 1918 in Dickinson County, Kan. where she was born into the family of David O. and Bertha S. Krehbiel. Elberta attended elementary school in Detroit, Kan. and she later graduated from Dickinson County Community High School before attending Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kan. where she met Leland S. Frey. They were married, following his graduation, on May 31, 1940. Moving to Penn Valley, Nevada County,  Calif., they established the Ladino Acres Dairy Farm. Elberta’s children, Jim, Sam and Mary were born during the six years they lived on the farm. In 1946, the farm was sold and the family moved to Red Bluff,  Calif. where Lee became a Farm Advisor with the University of California Extension Service. Following their 22-year residency in Tehama County, they moved to Sacramento County, where Lee retired in 1982. During Elberta’s “retirement years,” she and Lee traveled extensively within the United States and Alaska. They also engaged in international travel to Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Canada. Other interests included gardening, particularly caring for her house plants – a collection of African Violets, cacti and Bougainvillaea. Perhaps Elberta will be best remembered by her friends for her ability to share wisdom, experience and loving support. Many of her friends and family will remember her as their mentor and these powerful friendships are likely to survive her death. Elberta was predeceased by her husband, Leland; her parents, D.O. and Bertha Krehbiel; her brothers, Lloyd and Clarence Krehbiel; and her sister, Marie Culver. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Victor Rowland of Pratt, Kan.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Sarah Frey of Yreka and Sam and Barbara Frey of Wichita, Kan.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bob Allen of Redding; four grandchildren and their spouses; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services are planned for Friday, Jan. 16. A celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. at the Yreka United Methodist Church, corner of Fairchild and Cedar streets. Additionally, there will be a short memorial service for family, residents and Meadowlark staff at 2 p.m. The family suggests that anyone desiring to make memorial gifts make contributions to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Cir., Yreka, CA 96097. Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka is in charge of arrangements.

William Harrison Brown, Jr.

Mount Shasta,  Calif. - William Harrison Brown, Jr. went home to be with his father on Jan. 3, 2009. Will was born in Nashville, Ga. on September 25, 1979. He attended Berrien High School in Nashville, Ga., earning his diploma in 1998. Will went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Valdosta State University, Ga. He is survived by his beautiful and loving mother, Carol Woodard Brown and dear brothers, Alex and Blake Brown. His father, William “Butch” Harrison Brown, Sr. preceded him in death when Will was 17 years of age. Three years ago, Will followed his best friend out to the Weed and Mount Shasta area and so fell in love with the area that he decided to make it his home. For the last two years, Will was employed at Creative Tent International, where he had become a very successful sales representative. Will loved exploring the great outdoors and spent many a lazy summer afternoon waist deep fly fishing the Upper Sacramento, McCloud or Klamath rivers. Also an avid snowboarder, Will spent his final days snowboarding and enjoying friends dear to him. He possessed an amazing sense of humor and upbeat personality that brought endless joy to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all those friends and family alike who knew and loved him. A memorial celebration of Will’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at the Wayside Grill, 2217 S. Mount Shasta Blvd. in Mount Shasta. All friends are welcome. The family has requested that any memorials, on Will’s behalf, can be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Minnie Wanda Filippe

Medford, Ore. - Longtime Siskiyou County resident Minnie Wanda Filippe passed away on Jan. 7, 2009 in Medford, Ore. She was 99 years old. Minnie was born Sept. 6, 1909 in Gottville (Klamath River) to Antone and Emily DeAvilla, one of 13 children. She attended school in Siskiyou County. Minnie married Edward Filippe on Dec. 12, 1927. Minnie and Edward worked on the Hammond Ranch near Edgewood for many years. Minnie enjoyed knitting, gardening and playing pinochle. Minnie is survived by her two daughters, Barbara O’Dell of Eugene, Ore. and Virginia Parsons of Redding; a brother, Joe DeAvilla of Mount Shasta; a sister, Lenore Mulvany of Weed; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Minnie was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Edward, in 1996. A graveside service will be held on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA 96097. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Lucile Hopping Michael

Yreka,  Calif. - Margaret Lucile Hopping Michael passed away Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 2009 from a brief illness which came on around Christmas. Margaret lived a full and active life, earning 99 years, one month and one day here amongst us. She was born on Dec. 6, 1909 in Benton Harbor, Mich. to Fredrick MacKnight Hopping and Madge Emily Stebbins Hopping. She was one of seven siblings (Soon to be 8), who in about 1920 boarded a train with their mother to join their father in Alameda,  Calif. who had gone west seeking new opportunities. She and her family lived in Alameda and the bay area throughout their years in school and adulthood. On Jan. 19, 1935, she married her husband of 64 years, Walter A. Michael, who had moved to California in 1929 from West Deer Township,  Pennsylvania. They lived, worked, and raised their three children, Janet Marie, David Allen, and Sally Anne in San Francisco. She retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and Walter retired from Dinwiddie Construction Co. and moved to Yreka in 1972 to enjoy the outdoors and be closer to Walter’s brother, Howard. Margaret was many things to many people. She was known as Marge, Margaret, mom, grams, Aunt Marge, “The Cookie Lady”, and to a select few as “Saggy Maggie.” Enjoyment in life for her was derived from family, church, social activities and greatest of all, singing. She sang in choirs from grammar school through to her 99th birthday. She would be hard pressed to miss a local concert or choir performance either on stage or off. She was an example of cheerful service to the community and her charities. Whether it she was walking door to door for “March of Dimes”, volunteering for “Welcome Wagon”, or addressing envelopes for hospital auxiliary fund raising. This always positive and socially engaging woman is survived by her brothers, James and John (Bill) Hopping, of Alameda,, Calif., numerous nieces and nephews, her three children, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She will be missed by the five plus generations of friends and family whose life she touched, and from us we say “Pleasant Dreams”… Graveside services were held at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009. A memorial service was held on Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 at the Yreka Methodist Church at Fairchild and Cedar streets. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Lois McKinley

Yreka,  Calif. - Jean Lois McKinley, a 77-year-old Lake Shastina resident, passed away on Jan. 14, 2009 at Fairchild Medical Center. Jean was born on May 24, 1931 to Wilbur and Mabel Myers in Chicago, Ill. Jean married Phillip McKinley in 1950, and the couple made their home in Southern California. Jean loved to make porcelain dolls, and had her own business selling the dolls that she made. The couple moved to Lake Shastina, where Jean continued to make her dolls. Jean enjoyed sewing, and would make the clothes for her dolls. Jean was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Weed and a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved to travel and enjoyed entertaining, especially during the holidays. Jean is survived by her husband of 59 years, Phillip; her sons, Barry and Cory McKinley; a daughter, Mabel Stewart and her husband, Dean; a brother, Charles Myers; six sisters, Shirley Desmond, Ellie Wright, Carol Thies, Jo Ballard, Karen Gibson and Diana Kowal; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherrie and Cathy McKinley. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Lake Shastina Community Bible Church on  Jackson Ranch Road in Lake Shastina. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Miguel Sabori Espinoza

Redding,  Calif. - Miguel Sabori Espinoza of Dunsmuir passed away on Jan. 12, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding. He was 81 years old and died of natural causes. Miguel was born on Jan. 3, 1928 in Tuscon, Ariz. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1947 from Tuscon. He was a railroad engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad for 43 years. Survivors include his wife, Irene Espinoza of Dunsmuir; his son, Mike Espinoza Jr. of Dunsmuir; his daughters, Patricia Ann Kacludis and Lupe Rose Marie Rossetto, both of Redding; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers, Oscar Sabori, Ramon Sabori, Jose Sabori and Rubin Sabori; and his sister, Elvia Corona. Memorial services were held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at the Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel with Father Michael Canny officiating. Miguel was buried in the Mount Shasta Memorial Park. The Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Christine B. Brophy

Yreka,  Calif. - Christine B. Brophy passed away peacefully at home with her family at her side on Jan. 5, 2009. Chris was born in Oneida, Tenn. on July 28, 1935 to Proctor and Ola Blevins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Roger Blevins and Gerry Lorenzini; and her first husband, Capt. Gary R. Riggins, United States Army. She is survived by her beloved husband of 44 years, John Brophy; her brother-in-law, Ron Brophy and her brother, Kinny Blevins of Medford, Ore.; her children, Kandice Erans (Lee), Sandra Ferrero (Dan), Jerri-Mae Pirinoli (Gary), Terri Yolo (Duke), Jonni Smith (Dan) and Charles Brophy, all of Sonoma County, and Rick Riggins of Yreka. Chris has 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Chris grew up in Yreka, where she met her first husband, Gary Riggins, living in many places that the Army would take them. After Gary’s passing, October 1964 in the Vietnam War, she soon married John Brophy and eventually settled in Healdsburg,  Calif., where they raised their family. Chris thoroughly enjoyed gardening, Tuesday night bowling and her bowling trips to Reno with the girls. However, her greatest passion was being with her close family and friends. She was the most caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend that we could ever ask for. Chris will be forever in our hearts and remembered by all.

Leland “Lee” Ralph Estes

El Cerrito,  Calif. - Leland “Lee” Ralph Estes passed away peacefully in El Cerrito on Dec. 27, 2008 at the age of 88. A third generation Californian, Lee was born in Richmond,  Calif. He lived in El Cerrito his entire life, residing in the family home for over 80 years. He attended UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering and joined the Merchant Marines in the early 1940’s, traveling extensively throughout the Pacific. Upon his return, he joined his father at Chevron’s Richmond Refinery (then known as Standard Oil), where he worked for 31 years. The perfect neighbor, Lee was known for his quick willingness to assist. His quiet, introspective manner belied his friendliness and generosity of spirit. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was considered a lifelong friend by present and former neighbors. Respected for his historical knowledge of El Cerrito, he was regarded as an icon of El Cerrito’s past. Family members saw him as an authority on the family’s genealogy rooted in Etna,  Calif. Over the years, he enjoyed a broad range of avid interests, including bowling, racehorses, gardening, news and politics. He will be missed by friends, neighbors, former co–workers and associates. Lee is survived by his first cousins Vernon Smith of Etna and Tulie Barnum of Murphys. A visitation will be held at Wilson and Kratzer Mortuary, 455 24th Street, Richmond,  Calif. on Jan. 10 from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Sutter VNA and Hospice, 1900 Powell Street, Ste. 300, Emeryville,  Calif. 94608.

Richard Whitworth Lackett

Yreka,  Calif. - Richard Whitworth Lackett, born Sept. 7, 1945 in Santa Cruz  Calif. to Walter Lackett and Dorothy Turner, passed away on Dec. 31, 2008 at Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka.

Neva Jean Manning

Yreka,  Calif. - Neva Jean Manning of Greenview passed away on Jan. 13, 2009 at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka. Neva was born on Dec. 2, 1930 in Turlock,  Calif. She and her husband have lived in Scott Valley for about eight years. She is survived by her loving husband, Nelson Leon Manning; her daughter, Carol  White of Pollock Pines,  Calif.; her two sons, Darol and Gene Wester, both of Fort Jones; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Lindquist. Neva was a wonderful mother and a loving wife and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A special thanks to Madrone Hospice House for their brief but wonderful care our mother received there. Private services will be held at a later date.

Edna Mae Quigley

Yreka,  Calif. - Edna Mae Quigley, a 91-year-old Siskiyou County native, passed away at Fairchild Medical Center on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009 following a very short illness. Edna Mae was born on Nov. 8, 1917 to Jerome and Etta Kuck, also Siskiyou County natives, at the family ranch on Willow Creek near Montague. She attended Foothill School for eight years and graduated from Yreka High School in 1935. Edna Mae was married to Raymond H. Quigley and the couple were very active in local affairs. Together, they were involved with the Klamath River Sportsman’s Association, the local boy scouts club, the Ross Neilon Post No. 122, American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps and the Masonic Lodge. The couple loved to travel and spend time at the Kuck family cabin. She also loved animals. Edna Mae was preceded in death by Ray in May of 1993; her two sons, Ron in October of 1995 and John in May of 2008 and a grandson, Patrick. She is survived by six grandchildren, Dan Quigley and his wife, Cindy, of Redding, Tammy Quigley of Dunsmuir, Ron Quigley and his wife, Tammy, of Montague, Tracy Lechner and her husband, Kelley, of Arizona, Mike Quigley and his wife, Heather, of Arizona and Harvey Quigley of Berkeley; numerous great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Clarence and D.J. “Jiggs” Kuck and by two sisters, Eleanor Davenport and Claudine Schultz. Per Edna Mae’s wishes, there are no services planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, North Valley Office, P.O. Box 3148, Paradise, CA 95967. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of cremation arrangements.

Margaret L. Michael

Yreka,  Calif. - Margaret L. Michael, a 99-year-old Yreka resident, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Janet Stott, in Yreka. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 in Evergreen Cemetery in Yreka. A full obituary will appear in Monday’s Daily News. Girdner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Marie Hecker

Yreka,  Calif. - Funeral services for Helen Marie Hecker, 86-years-young, a longtime resident of Mount Shasta, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 at the Hope Community Church, 974 Lassen Ln., Mount Shasta. Internment will follow at the Mount Shasta Memorial Park. Helen passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at Meadowlark Memory Care in Yreka with her family at her side. The Reverend Paul Aiellio from Hope Community Church and Pastor Bob Shofner, Ret., Christ Lutheran Church, both of Mount Shasta, will officiate. Helen Marie Hecker was born on Dec. 5, 1922 in St. Louis, Mo. She was the only child born to Jett and Violet Myers. Helen attended elementary through high school in St. Louis, Mo. After marrying her beloved husband, Fred, in 1942, she worked in a variety of retail department stores. In 1945, when Fred was discharged from the Army Air Corps, they moved to Oregon. Helen and Fred were a team, together they operated several businesses all over Oregon and then in 1960, they moved to Southern California to work for Walt Disney until Fred retired. Helen worked for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Orange as the church secretary for 10 years. After Helen’s retirement, they would settle down in Mount Shasta and become members of Hope Community Church. Helen was a doer! She worked quite a lot for the Hopi Indian Reservation; she was a member of the DAR and KOPS, volunteering as a docent at the Sisson Museum and she was a volunteer at the Coffee Connection. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Fred. She leaves behind her loving family, Daughters, Laura Keenan of Atlanta, Ga., Jan Mauck and her husband, Charlie of Mount Shasta; one son, Jim Hecker of Japan; former daughter-in-law, Sharon Hecker of  Washington, five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a host of wonderful friends. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hope Community Church – food pantry fund or Mercy Mount Shasta Hospice. Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
