Antone C. Machado
Big Springs, Calif. - Tony C. Machado, well known respected rancher and Big Springs native, died on June 13, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Tony’s 87th birthday was Sunday, June 7.
He was born in Big Springs in 1922 on a ranch only a mile across the fields from his current residence on Machado Lane. His parents, Frank and Adelaide Machado, were Azorean immigrants who were among the first families to settle in the Big Springs area. At a very young age Tony was considered one of the hired men on the ranch, driving teams of horses to put up hay or feed the cattle, rounding up horse herds at Lake Shastina and driving them back home alone, and even sometimes hiding his father’s bootleg whiskey in the junipers from the revenuers. Many stories were told over the years of the many horses that he broke. Tony was a multi-sport athlete at Yreka High School in football and track and field, beating Weed in football was among the highlights.
After graduating from YHS in 1941, he briefly attended Yuba College, where he again played football. After WW II arrived, he served in the California State Guard while continuing to work on the family ranch. On July 24,1943 Tony took the city girl to the country when he married Bernice Morgan of Yreka. Tony loved to race motorcycles with his brother, Frank, but after Bernice had given birth to their fourth child, he decided racing motorcycles was a risky pastime for a father of four. They lived many years ranching together, until Bernice was diagnosed with cancer in late 1976, passing away on Feb. 3, 1977. Shortly thereafter, his sons John and Michael moved to the ranch and established Machado and Son’s Dairy. Working hard everyday, side by side, they shared the dairy business until November 2005, when it was sold.
The family ranch remains on Machado Lane with many family members still living on the ranch or near by.
Tony is survived by his long time “sweetheart” and companion, Josie Hast of Yreka; his four children, Patricia McGuire and her husband Dennis of Crescent City and their daughters, Stephanie and Janelle; John and his wife Neves of Big Springs and their children, Michele and Christopher; Michael and his wife Beth of Big Springs and their boys, Casey, Levi and Tyler; and Barbara Ross and her husband Stephen of Ashland, Ore. and their boys, Matthew and Brian. He is also survived by his brothers Frank of Modesto, Calif. and Louie of Big Springs; and his sister Mary Louise DeAvilla and her husband Dick of Big Springs.
Tony leaves eight great-grandchildren, Brandon McGuire, Kylee, Sara and Patrick Proffett, Rebecca and Joel Gort and Megan and Nathan Machado. Another great-grandson is due to be born any day, he will be named Anthony Machado. Tony is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins in the U.S. as well as in the Azores Islands and many dear family friends.
Tony was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Adelaide Machado, his wife Bernice, his cousin Mary Silva, and his baby sister Mary Louise, who died on a trip to the Azores when Tony was nine years old. He never returned to the Azores.
Tony was a cowboy and he loved to look at and ride a beautiful horse, he loved football (the San Francisco 49ers have lost their most loyal fan), a good beer or high ball, deer hunting on Miller Mountain, salmon fishing at the coast with his fishing buddies, his BBQ ribs and his family. He lived a wonderful life and recently said he thanked God every day and was grateful for all the good things he had.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Madrone Hospice for their care with numerous visits to the ranch. Special thanks to friend of the family and Hospice nurse, Toby/Laurie Urrutia and her son Jake.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the Catholic Cemetery
in Yreka. He will be laid to rest next to his wife and mother. A gathering of friends and family will be at the DeAvilla home on Highway A-12 in Big Springs following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Bernice Machado Memorial Scholarship in care of the Big Springs Community Club or to a charity of your choice.
Hal Bowman
Dunsmuir, Calif. - Hal Bowman, 88, of Dunsmuir, passed away June 1, 2009. Hal was born April 3, 1921 in San Francisco, Calif. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1943 with a bachelors degree in forestry, and was registered professional forester #20. He worked for Castle Creek Lumber, Ralph L. Smith Lumber and Kimberly Clark, retiring in 1980 to establish a consulting forestry business, which he operated until shortly before his death. Sustainable forestry was his passion.
Hal is survived by his wife of 61 years Mardell (Packwood); his sons, Forest (Ruth) and Brook (Maura); his daughter Fawn Turner (Jonathan); his grandchildren, Mark (Jillian), Christopher (Amy), Nathanael, Christine, Erich, Jerry Turner and Serenity Turner; and his great-grandchildren, Jacob and Muriel.
Hal served in the U.S. Army, having served in the Philippines during WW II. Hal served his Lord and Savior as a member of the church of Christ as elder, treasurer, song leader, Bible and music teacher, youth leader, camp cook, counselor and chaperone. He was a great example of a Christian father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Hal served his profession and community, including PCT Advisory council, Society of American Foresters, International Disaster Emergency Services, Siskiyou Planning Commission, Dunsmuir treasurer, California Forest Landowners Association, American Tree Farm System inspector and COS Community Choir.
Hal enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping and backpacking with his family. Many memorable weeks were spent in wilderness areas. At age 87, Hal spent a week backpacking in the John Muir Wilderness area, walking 10 miles from the camp site to the trailhead.
Hal’s enthusiasm for life was an inspiration to many.

June Suter
Montague, Calif. - June Suter, a 78-year-old Montague resident, passed away unexpectedly at the family ranch on Friday, May 29, 2009.
June was born Feb. 2, 1931 in Bend, Ore. the fifth of six children born to Joseph and Ruth Madden. June graduated from Greenhorn Elementary School and from Yreka High School in 1949. While working at Leonard’s Café, she met the love of her life, Pete Suter and the couple were married on Dec. 17, 1949. Pete and June were married for 56 years before Pete’s death in May of 2005. She was a member of the Greenhorn Grange, just receiving her 65-year pin.
June was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather Ace Hudson; her stepbrother Art Chipman; her brothers, George and Don Madden; and her sister Marjorie Lovelace.
She is survived by her sister Virginia Shriver of Reno and three children and their spouses, Ruth and George Hurd of Grenada, Joe and Beth Suter of Yreka and Kathie and Kevin Levy of Grenada. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael and Kim Leckness, Cory and Jenni Leckness, Amy and Pat Dircksen, Jennifer Cash and friend, Kevin Mancebo, Jason and Nicole Suter and Amy and Mickey Chizek; and by four great grandchildren, Lane Leckness, Trenton Leckness, Cody Cash and Dallas Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves her friend Sandy Bryant.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Grenada Community Berean Church in Grenada with Pastor John Wetzig officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery

Sharon Anne Ramos
Redding, Calif. - Sharon Anne Ramos, went to be with the Lord on May 23, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding after an unexpected illness.
Sharon was born on Jan. 2, 1944 in Indiana.
She met and married the love of her life, John Ramos. Together they had three children, Karyn, Deborah and Marc. Sharon had one of the hardest jobs in the world, being a homemaker, wife and mother.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 46 years, John Ramos of Anderson, Calif.; her daughter Deborah McCarthy and husband Dennis of Yreka; and her son Marc Ramos and wife Patty of Anderson, Calif. She is also survived by her grandson Joshua McCarthy and wife Shayla, their son and her great-grandson Silas of Fort Lewis Wash., her grandson Eddie Williams of Washington, D.C. and her granddaughter Alyssa Ramos of Yreka.
She was preceded in death by her eldest daughter Karyn Jonelle.
Family services will be held when her grandson Joshua returns home from Afghanistan.
Rest in Peace Mama, your pain is no more. Thank you for all of your love, wisdom, humor, understanding, patience and guidance. You are so beautiful and we miss you so very much.

Jeannette Reed
Mount Shasta, Calif. - Jeannette Reed of Mount Shasta passed away May 29, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta.
Jeannette was born March 6, 1940 in McCloud. She was a lifelong Siskiyou County resident. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Jeannette was a homemaker and a Mercy Hospice volunteer and she started the Good Grief Group. She loved cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
Jeannette was predeceased by her husband Kenneth Reed; her brothers, John, Herbert, George and Tony Baldi and her sisters, Barbara Baldi, Clara Nobile, Bina Fiora and Enela Renero.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Reed and William Reed both of Mount Shasta; her daughter Patricia Reed of Redding, her sisters, Alice Short of Redding and Julie Ashlock of Auburn; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2009 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Mount Shasta with Father Michael Canny officiating. She will be buried in the Mt. ARMSTRONG, DIANE Passed away peacefully on November 3, 2001 at the Branford Hospice, Connecticut, after a two year fight with cancer. Daughter of James and Lucille Johnston, she is survived by her three children: sons, Richard H. Armstrong of San Diego, CA, Ross H. Armstrong of Danbury, CT; and daughter Nyna Armstrong-Casey of Orinda, CA. She was the enthusiastic grandmother of four. Diane, a native of Sacramento, was born on April 14, 1934, and was active in Rainbow Girls and Ila Neb. She graduated from McClatchy High School and Sacramento City College. Diane enjoyed a varied career life which included real estate at Camelot Realty in Sacramento and construction management at several firms in the Sacramento Area. Diane lived and traveled extensively throughout the Orient and Europe. We will miss her wry sense of humor, her quick wit and her adventurous spirit. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 10th, St. Peter's Church, Main Street, Danbury, CT. A California memorial will be held in Orinda in early December. ATKINSON, SHERRYL SMITH Went to be with the Lord on 11-7-01. She was 50 years old & went peacefully. GHILARDUCCI, HARRY E. In Gilroy, CA, Nov 6, 2001 at the age of 66. A native of Roseville CA. Preceded in death by brother Alfred and parents Giuseppe and Gina Ghilarducci. Survived by his loving wife Ruth Ghilarducci of Gilroy, daughter Teresa Ghilarducci of South Bend, IN and David Ghilarducci of Kalamazoo, MI. Also survived by step children Matthew Young of Santa Rosa, Paul Young of Walnut Creek, Debra Warne of Sacramento & 7 grandchildren. Harry graduated from Roseville high school in 1955 and UC Berkeley in 1958 where he played football and majored in Mechanical engineering. Harry was a Rocket engineer at Aerojet in Sacramento and Teledyne McCormick Selph in Hollister, CA. He loved model trains, camping and going for rides to the beach. HOWARD, ETHEL K. Age 88, a former long time resident of the Sacramento area, died Tuesday, October 16, 2001, in a care facility in Morro Bay, CA, of respiratory failure as a result of Alzheimer's Disease. Cremation took place at Benedict-Retty Mortuary in Morro Bay and interment will take place at East Lawn Cemetery
in Sacramento. Mrs. Howard was born September 2, 1913, in Kingman, KS, to Harrison "Harry" Kelley and Mary Josephine "Josie" Silvius Kelley. She was raised in northwest Arkansas, where her father built and operated two movie theaters and founded the Kelley Brothers Lumber Company. She moved to California with her three sons in January of 1941 and ultimately settled in the Sacramento area. She worked in a variety of positions with the State of California and the County of Sacramento, as well as with private companies during her thirty year career as a working mother and homemaker. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing the piano, sewing and playing Scrabble. After retirement she became an avid Bridge player and enjoyed playing at various Senior Centers around the area, including the Ethel Hart Senior Center. A beloved mother and grandmother, she is survived by her sons Fred W. Cook Jr., of San Luis Obispo, CA; Burton K. Cook of Hardy, AR; David L. Cook of Sacramento, CA; and Donna L. Pierce Sparlin, of Newquay, UK; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her brother Ashford Burnelle Kelley of Woodland, WA. Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, three brothers and four husbands: Fred W. Cook, of Arkansas; Glenn E. Compton, Arthur E. Pierce and Charles F. Howard, of Sacramento. KEYS, CAROLE JEAN Born March 15, 1939 in Sacramento, CA. Passed away peacefully at her home on November 1, 2001 with her family at her side. Loving wife of Ralph Keys for 36 years; also survived by her daughter Katherine Keys of Rancho Cordova; daughter Stacey McAtee and husband Erin of Folsom; step-sons Randall and Clayton Keys of Tennessee. She volunteered her time to many organizations including Kiwanis Family House and V.I.P.S (Volunteer in Partner with Sheriff's Department). She was a member of American River Kiwanis, the California Teacher's Association and the National Education Association. She attended University of Davis and received her B.A. and Teaching Credential from California State University, Sacramento. She was an elementary school teacher for 36 years and had a great love for her students. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her family and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew her. LARSEN, JAMES C. COL. USAF (Ret) Passed away on November 3, 2001. He was a resident of Fair Oaks, CA since 1965, where he retired after serving as a pilot in Texas, Karachi, Pakistan, and California. He also retired from civil service at McClellan AFB in 1979. He is survived by his two daughters, Christy Brant of Elk Grove, CA, and Karen Myrehn of Reno, Nevada; his two nieces, Sara Brant of Lincoln, NE, and Melanie Brant of Reston, VA; and his brother Larry Larsen of Manlius, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty Larsen, in 1995. LOHEIT, ROBERT E. 87 years old. Born October 15, 1914. Loving husband of Marjorie for 65 years. Father of Dennis, wife Karen and son Lawrence, both of Sacramento. Grandfather of Sheryl Van Maren, Husband James, Steven Loheit, wife Susan, all of Sacramento, Michelle Fry and Jason Loheit, both of Citrus Heights. Great grandfather of 7. Brother of Myrtle, husband Robert Duensing of Sacramento. Preceded in death by his younger brothers, Arthur F. Loheit and David R. Loheit. A native Northern Californian, born in San Francisco brought to Sacramento in 1919, resident of Sacramento for the past 82 years. A graduate of Sacramento High School, January class of 1933. Served as chair of class reunions in 1953, 1963, 1973 and 1993. He attended both Sacramento Junior College and the McGeorge College of Law. Actively involved in the consumer credit industry for more than 40 years. Past president of the following: 20-30 Club #1 Sacramento, Sacramento Better Business Bureau, Sacramento-Yolo Legal Aid Society, National Association of Chapter 13 Trustees and various social and dancing clubs. He also held statewide offices for many years in both the California Association of Personal Property Brokers and the California Association of Industrial Bankers. MCCONNELL, BARBARA E. Born Oct. 11, 1927, passed away on Nov. 6, 2001. Beloved wife of 54 yrs. to Frank L. McConnell and loving mother of Debra J. Olson & Jim F. McConnell. She had five grandchildren, Brooke & Caitlin Olson of Reno, NV and those of her son, Ryan, Torrey & Brett McConnell of Boise, ID all whom she loved very much. She was raised in Stockton, maiden name of McGregor and a graduate of Stockton High School class of 1945. Most of her married years she lived in Walnut Creek, she loved golf and was a member of Contra Costa Country Club for 17 years. She was kind, loving and had a great sense of humor. She will be sorely missed. She is now in the hands of God. McGINNIS, MARY L. Of Citrus Heights, November 7, 2001, a native of Dawson, Nebraska, age 100 years. Wife of the late Carlyle McGinnis. Mother of Mary Fisher (Deceased), Carlyle McGinnis, Jr., Gene McGinnis (Arlene), Floyd McGinnis (Debi) and Sherry Wilhelm (Ken). Grandmother of 13. Great Grandmother of 15. Great Great Grandmother of 3. Mary worked for the United Methodist Church in the nursery for 35 years, caring for hundreds of children throughout her career until retirement. Mary was also known for her talent of baking wonderful deserts. Friends are welcome for visitation Saturday from 11AM-3PM at PRICE FUNERAL CHAPEL (6335 Sunrise Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 725-2109). A funeral service celebrating Mary's life will be on Monday at 1PM at CITRUS HEIGHTS UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (7833 Highland Ave., Citrus Heights), viewing will begin at 12PM. Interment will be at Heim Cemetery, Dawson, Nebraska.
McLEOD, JOHN BURTON Age 52, died peacefully on Oct. 19, 2001 in San Francisco. Beloved son of Jill McLeod, and the late Bruce W. McLeod, cherished brother of sisters Cam Weldon and Heidi White and brother Blair McLeod, all of Sacramento, and sister Holly Holmquist of Germany. Loved uncle of nephews Nick Wilson and Erik White and niece Whitney White. Also survived by his extended San Francisco family Phill Barber and John Alecca. Compensation Manager/Human Resources Dept. at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Born Jan. 16, 1949, in Carmel, CA, John was raised in Sacramento, attended El Camino High School, and was involved with the newly formed Sacramento Chapter of Up With People. After graduation from UC Berkeley in 1971, John spent six years as the Commanding Officer of the coastal minesweeper, USS SHRIKE (MSC-201). Previously employed as Compensation Programs Manager in the Office of the President of the University of California and in the Personnel Department of the city of Seattle as the Director of Compensation and Benefits. An avid musician, John sang with the Seattle Men's Chorus and the San Francisco Men's Chorus for a combined total of 21 years and served on both Boards of Directors and as President of each. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at 11AM, at Swedenborgian Church at Lyon & Washington Streets in San Francisco.
