HEMMINGSEN, GERRY L. (BURKE) On Friday, November 2, our family lost our greatest treasure, our beautiful mother. Gerry Burke Hemmingsen was born September 14, 1923 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was the youngest of nine children. Mom has now joined our father, Robert, in Heaven. Mom and Dad dated for three years and married in the summer of '42. Shortly thereafter, our dad left for WW II. At the end of the war, they started their family in Iowa with the birth of their first daughter, Suzanne. Mom and Dad decided to move to California in 1952, when mom was expecting their second daughter, Rose Mary. They settled in Sacramento after her birth. Three years later, their third daughter, Lori was born. Mom had a wonderful love of family, friends, home and laughter. Though she never worked outside of the home, she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a supportive wife and companion to our dad, but also had a very independent Irish spirit. This spirit was one she shared with her sisters and brothers and most certainly sustained her during the 15 years following our dad's passing. She loved family get-togethers, clothes shopping, cooking, baking, trips to lake Tahoe, including a trip to her home land of Ireland with her sisters. Nothing gave our mother more fulfillment than to be surrounded by her family, telling their busy days, telling jokes and stories, and asking the kids about their day. She set the example of finding humor in just about any circumstance. She was able to do this because of her unquestionable and undoubting faith. Through the years of accommodating her heart condition, she never feared death. And though she missed our dad, or each brother or sister who passed before her, she only viewed this world as a temporary home. She taught us from the beginning that we were all meant to be together, once again, in Heaven. She leaves her loving children Suzanne, Rose Mary and Dan, Lori and Carroll, grandchildren Jennifer, Michael, Michelle, Leann and Melanie, and great-grandchildren Christopher, Sean, Simone, Andrew and Paul. Her loving presence will be so greatly missed in the days and years to come. Friends are welcome for visitation Wednesday November 7, 2001 at 12 Noon - 7pm to be followed by a Rosary Wednesday 7pm at the NICOLETTI, CULJIS & HERBERGER FUNERAL HOME 5401 Folsom Blvd. Friends are also invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Thursday November 8, 2001 at 10:00 am at St Mary's Church 58th & M Streets.
