Magures, daughter Anita R. Magures, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. A resident of Sacramento since 1950, she was a lifetime member of "The Order of Eastern Star" and a past Mother Advisor of "Rainbow for Girls". She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Harry Kawahata
Harry Kawahata was beloved trove of advice
When Ford mechanic Harry Kawahata retired 18 years ago, co-workers also retired his blue work shirt.
The old mechanic's garment with "Harry" stitched on the front now hangs in a place of honor, from the rafters of the main shop at Maita Ford-Mercury in Auburn.
But Mr. Kawahata, who died Wednesday at 93, never fully retired. At least twice a week, he returned to the auto dealership to drink coffee and socialize.
"Every time he came in, this place geared up a notch or two," said Dan Whaley, parts manager at Maita. "He just commanded respect. This guy was definitely a legend."
Added Brian Albright, assistant parts manager: "Harry would take shop manuals home and read them like most of us would read the sports page. Some obscure electrical problem that would drive the rest of us nuts, that was his forte. He was like a walking encyclopedia."
Except for three years during World War II, when he and more than 110,000 others of Japanese ancestry were sent to internment camps, Mr. Kawahata lived in south Placer County.
Harry Masamitsu Kawahata was born in Ophir on April 8, 1908, one of six children of Suye and Chiyomatsu Kawahata. His father worked on a fruit ranch.
He dropped out of Placer Union High School after two years to do ranch work and help support his family, according to his son Harry Kawahata Jr.
On June 25, 1935, he married the former Harriet Tsukamoto, and they had two sons. During the war years, they were interned in federal camps at Tulelake and Topaz, near Delta, Utah.
The war over, they returned in December 1945 to Placer County, where Mr. Kawahata supported his family by working as a laborer on farms and ranches in Lincoln and Newcastle.
In 1955, he went to work in Auburn as a handyman for the Junker & Shull Ford dealership, which later became McLaughlan Ford, then Maita.
Within a few years, after taking correspondence courses, Mr. Kawahata was promoted to mechanic, his son said, noting, "He always enjoyed working with cars."
While rearing his family in Loomis, Mr. Kawahata became active in Placer Buddhist Church and the local chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. He served as chapter president in 1965-66.
In retirement, he socialized in the Loomis post office, the bank and the town's old-fashioned soda fountain and pharmacy.
"He would always come in and visit," said pharmacist Gordon Takemoto, who owns Main Drug. "He wouldn't sit at the counter, but he would greet everybody. We enjoyed him."
Mr. Kawahata and his pal George Hirakawa, an 82-year-old insurance agent, were morning regulars at Old West Donuts in Auburn and Jasmine Donut in Rocklin.
"Harry used to drive all over, no reason at all except he liked to visit people," Hirakawa said. "He was a happy-go-lucky guy, always helpful, especially if you had a car problem. He had lots of tools."
Longtime friend Carmen Lewelling, 80, remembered him this way: "He would always kid you, give you a little poke or a hug. He brought a smile to your face, made your day happier."
Until he was hospitalized with intestinal problems in March, he would make his daily rounds in his 1990 Mercury Sable.
When his health started to decline, friends and family members would drive him to Auburn so he could socialize with the mechanics and parts workers.
Last week, on his final visit, Mr. Kawahata did his repair shop rounds using a walker.
"He knew so much about so many things," recalled Whaley, the parts manager. "I learned more from Harry than I ever did from any history teacher. You take 93 years and change, there's a lot of wisdom to impart, and Harry was willing to share. This guy, he loved life. He appreciated every day he was here, and that came across."
In addition to his wife, Harriet, survivors include sons, Richard of Loomis and Harry Jr. of Sacramento; and two grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for noon Monday in Placer Buddhist Church, 3192 Boyington Road, Penryn.
ALBERTER, FRANK M. Frank M. Alberter died Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He was 70. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, he had lived most of his life in Citrus Heights, California with his loving wife Norma J. Alberter until she passed in 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his tour of duty, he began work as a Teamster where he drove anything on wheels. He retired from Granite Construction Co. in 1991 but never retired as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His kind and caring demeanor along with his giving nature will never be forgotten From all his family to him, a final Thank You. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M., Monday, November 5, at Lambert Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd., in Roseville. A service will begin at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 6, at the funeral home. CORNELIUS, NANCY ANN In Carmichael, October 30, 2001, age 60, after a valiant fight against Renal Cell Cancer. Born in Costa Rica on October 1, 1941 and came to the U.S. with her parents in 1942, where she was raised in San Carlos, CA. Her many interests were designing and making award-winning quilts and art-to- wear clothing; watercolor painting; farmer's market with friends; good food and wine; running and then later walking along the river on the bike trail; and spending time with her adored granddaughters. She is survived by her beloved husband of 21 years, Richard; loving mother, Evelyn Whittemore of San Carlos; her loving daughter Ann (Garcia) Galli and her husband Michael of Mountain View; her loving son Roy Garcia of Granada Hills; her loving son Bill Garcia and his wife Cheryl and two granddaughters Sarah and Charlotte Garcia of Fair Oaks; her loving brother Donald Whittemore and wife Linda and niece Darcy and nephew Donnie of Woodland Hills; and many, many other relatives and friends. GOLDSBERRY, DELMAR "BUD" CLINTON Of Medford, OR, passed away October 31, 2001, age 93. Born in Springville, Iowa on September 15, 1908 to Frank & Stella Goldsberry. Former resident of Roseville. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon Cox of Monterey; 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Irma Jesse Nolan, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Mr. Goldsberry had worked for the telephone company for 35 years, retiring in 1969. After his retirement he lived a short time at Lake Tahoe then moved to Sacramento and lived there from 1970 to 1992, and leaves numerous family members there. Mr. Goldsberry enjoyed fishing, RV'ing and baseball. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
GUESS, ARTHUR JAMES, Jr. Passed away in Sacramento, CA on October 26, 2001. Aged 68. A long time resident of Sacramento. Born on June 18, 1933. Art served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. He briefly served as a Pentagon guard during stateside service. Art pursued a career in the sport of boxing at an early age, fighting under the names "Jimmy Lee" and "Jimmy Guess". He was a six-time Golden Glove champion and an AAU champion. He made it to the 1952 Olympic trials and was a semi-finalist in boxing but was beat by the man who later took the gold medal. Art earned his coaching license, coached boxing in the army, and in Chattanooga, Tenn., and later opened his own boxing gym. He led many teams to championship tournaments, including the 1960 AAU tournament where the team won 10 of the 13 events. In 1966, Art settled his family in Rancho Cordova. Art was an active member of the community. From 1969 to 1975, Art coached Little League baseball, leading the teams to championship seasons. He also coached flag football with the Rancho Ramblers and Rancho Packer teams, seeing these teams go to the championships as well. Because of his love for chess, Art was a founding member of the Cordova Chess Club at Cordova High School. He volunteered his time at local elementary schools and was involved in the lives of many children. In 1975, he was named "Citizen of the Year" for Rancho Cordova. Art ran a successful business for 18 years and enjoyed interacting with people in the community. Besides his love for chess, he also enjoyed playing golf and playing with his grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Delores Guess. He is survived by his children: Michael B., Steven J., Mark E., Anthony T., and Sheri L. Joyce; and grandchildren: Austin, Anneliese, Stephanie, Eric, Kristen and Joshua. Three sisters also survive him. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service remembering Art on Tuesday, Nov. 6th at 6:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home in Folsom.

KRANICH, DONALD G. In Roseville on November 2, 2001 at the age of 80. Born July 3, 1921 in Milwaukee, WI. A resident of Sacramento for 21 years and a prior resident of Michigan. He is survived by son's John and Tom of California, Steve of Michigan, daughter Trudi Findlay of Michigan, Sisters Bea and Bernice of Iowa, and 8 grandchildren. MARTIN, HERBERT JOHN Passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 29, 2001 with his loving family by his bedside. Born March 14, 1909, in Blue Hill, Nebraska. Attended Nebraska Weslyan and Hastings Colleges, excelling in drama, art and football. Moved to California in 1937. He met and married his devoted wife of 62 years, Harriet, who survives him. He is also survived by two adored daughters and their husbands, Carol Schanz (Gary) and Marilyn Buettell (Jim), grandchildren, Gregory Martin, Tracie Schanz, Terry Schanz, Trent Schanz and great grandson, Andrew Schanz. Herbert is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Fine of Fresno, CA and his brother, Edwin Martin and beloved nieces and nephews. He served 3 years in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. He was a member of the Sacramento Fire Department for 29 years, often cooking for the crew. He was a professional dog handler and bred and showed Cocker Spaniels. Herbert was an accredited camellia judge, past president of the Camellia Society of Sacramento, the Camellia Forum, and a member of the American Camellia Society and Sacramento City Retired Employee Association. Herbert was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor who adored his family and liked fishing, hunting, music and ballroom dancing. Visitation will be on November 4, from Noon to 4PM and memorial services will be held Monday, November 5, at 10AM at Harry Naumans. Interment to follow at the Masonic Cemetery

McLEOD, JOHN BURTON Age 52, died peacefully on October 19, 2001 in San Francisco. Beloved son of Jill McLeod, cherished brother of sisters Cam Weldon and Heidi White and brother Blair McLeod, all of Sacramento, and sister Holly Holmquist of Germany. Loved uncle of nephews Nick Wilson and Erik White and niece Whitney White. Also survived by his extended San Francisco family Phill Barber and John Alecca. Compensation Manager/Human Resources Department at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Born January 16, 1949, in Carmel, CA, John was raised in Sacramento, attended El Camino High School, and was involved with the newly formed Sacramento Chapter of Up With People. After graduation from UC Berkeley in 1971, John spent six years as the Commanding Officer of the coastal minesweeper, USS SHRIKE (MSC-201). Previously employed as Compensation Programs Manager in the Office of the President of the University of California and in the Personnel Department of the city of Seattle as the Director of Compensation and Benefits. An avid musician, John sang with the Seattle Men's Chorus and the San Francisco Men's Chorus for a combined total of 21 years and served on both Boards of Directors and as President of each. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, November 10, 2001, at 11AM, at Swedenborgian Church at Lyon and Washington Streets in San Francisco.
METZLER, ALBERT Born September 1st, 1913 in Los Angeles, California. Died peacefully on March 14th in Carmichael, California of complications from diabetes and heart disease. Beloved father to Tom Metzler of Fair Oaks. Father-in-law to Kathy Metzler and grandfather to Matt and Chris. Preceded in death by Marian Klosterman Metzler, his wife of 48 years, in 1989. Brother to Emma, John, Armida, Kennard, Bertha, Louis and Robert. Worked as a Production Supervisor for Brown International in West Covina, California until his retirement. Forty two year resident of Whittier, California, he moved to Carmichael in 1996 to be closer to his family. Member of Toastmaster's International from 1991-1999. World War II veteran - landed on Day 1 of Normandy invasion as member of 111th Sea Bee Battalion. His ashes were interred next to his Marian at Holy Cross Cemetery
in Culver City, California. He was a wonderful, kind man whose quiet strength, humor and humility will be greatly missed.
