MULICH, LEANNE L. Of Citrus Heights, born July 17, 1940, passed away October 28, 2001. Loving mother of Michael Mulich, Michelle Marie and Merko Mulich. Cherished grandmother of Christopher, Kyle, Megan and Abraham. Surviving family: daughter of Virginia Carpenter. Stepdaughter of Joe Carpenter Sr. Sister of Sheila Kelley, Ernest Klement, Virginia Ball and April Carpenter. A native of lowa, she moved to California in 1959 for the sunshine. Revered in Sacramento for her integrity and ethos in her 29 year career in the residential real estate field. A private picnic in her honor will be announced. ROBINSON, MICHAEL J. Born Feb. 1, 1949 in Sacramento, CA.
Passed away on Oct. 30, 2001 in Pocatello, Idaho.
Long time resident of Sacramento, Mike was a well known ceramic tile setter and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his children, his father, and brothers and sisters. Services will be private.
SCHAEFER, GERALD Gerald passed away in Sacramento, California, October 30, 2001, at the age of 68. Beloved father to Tina Riordan of Elk Grove, CA, and Scott Schaefer of Sacramento, CA. He is survived by 4 Grandchildren, Nicole Riordan, Julian Riordan, Ashley Riordan, and Megan Riordan. Loving brother of Richard Schaefer, Betty Burkholder, Mary Kammann, and Walter (Bud) Schaefer. A native of St. Paul, MN and a resident of Sacramento, CA for 63 years. Just to name a few, he belonged to the Armvets, VFW, and Senior Companions. He enjoyed educating himself with computers and crosswords. Also, he enjoyed helping and caring for others and he had a great outlook on life. He loved his family and he will be missed by those who knew him. SHINAULT, THOMAS WILKINS LT. COL. (RET) Born June 17, 1924 in Byhalia, Mississippi. Passed away October 30, 2001 in Fair Oaks, California. Retired after 30 years of service with the United States Air Force, as a pilot, intelligence officer, and an engineer. Also retired after 10 years as a Safety Engineer with CIGNA. He had a life-long love of trains, and served as a docent for 15 years at the California Railroad Museum and was a founding member of Operation Lifesaver. Was preceded in death by his infant son: Lance Thomas Shinault, and his brothers: Louis Harold Shinault and Walter Sidney Shinault. Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 57 years: Shirley Ann Shinault, sons: Brian Sneed Shinault and wife Cindy, and Eric Wilkins Shinault, daughters: Rebecca Luigs and husband Tim, and Marcia Shinault Frank and husband Roy, and grandchildren: Beth, Thomas, Trey, Sean, and Ryan. He is also survived by his niece: Cynthia Rosenthal, and a large extended family. LILLIAN MAY Lillian was born April 4, 1921, in rural Montana. Following the death of her father, Charles Bowrey in 1931, Lillian moved to California with her mother, Daisy, and sister, Virginia. She married Franklin Stillwell on September 6, 1942. Her dream of attending college was delayed first by the great depression, then by WWII, and finally by her two sons. Finally, in 1958 she entered Sacramento State College. She participated in the honors program and graduated in 1963 both in and with honors. She continued at Sac State, earning a Masters degree in 1965. Lillian worked as a school psychologist for Placer County and then Auburn Unified School District, eventually becoming director of special education programs. While with the Auburn schools, Lillian obtained a number of grants and conducted research projects on improving education. In 1979, the California Association of School Psychologists recognized Lillian as the outstanding school psychologist in Region 1, one of six regions in the state. She served as the president of the California Association of School Psychologists from 1980 to 1981. Following her retirement, Lillian continued to do volunteer work for different organizations. She passed away on October 31, 2001. Lillian is survived by her husband Franklin Stillwell, her son Robert Stillwell, and Grandchildren, Christine Bellavia, Sean Stillwell, Sara Stillwell, and Amelia Stillwell. STRIEMER, GALEN FRANK "DOC" Received into the arms of his Lord and Savior, October 31, 2001, in Woodland, CA at the age of 81. He was born March 25, 1920, in Fairmont, MN, to Vandala and Frank Striemer. In 1944, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a business degree and later became a CPA. Doc worked at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Alpha, MN, founded by his father, and at various construction companies as treasurer and financial officer. He was active in and served as an officer for professional accounting organizations. In 1986, he retired from the position of financial officer for the Associated General Contractors of California in Sacramento. Doc was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and as an Elder, served in many leadership positions. In his retirement he worked as volunteer director of the South Sacramento Ecumenical Parish. He was a tireless volunteer all his life, serving the Sacramento United Way, Legal Aid for the Elderly and Disabled, Senior Connections, and the Mental Health Association. Doc loved playing cards and was an active member of the Widowed Persons Association of Sacramento. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Wilda "Gussy"; and sons, Keith and Jeff. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his sister, Helen Meium; his children, Katy, Charlie, and Andy; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be November 7, 2001, at 11:00 A.M., at Faith Presbyterian Church, 625 Florin Road, Sacramento, CA. TOWNSEND, JUDY HARVEY Born on Feb. 6, 1921 in El Paso, TX. Passed on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001. Loving wife of James P. Townsend and beloved mother of Edward Harvey (Lupe) and Robert Townsend (Anita). Also survived by four grandchildren, Richard (Stewart), Eddie (Desiree), Lance (Theresa), and Marc (Geri) Harvey. Great-grandmother to eleven grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. WAUGH, Dr. SUSAN MCGOWAN On Thursday morning, November 1st, Dr. Susan McGowan-Waugh passed away in her home. Her loving husband, George, and her beloved Queensland heeler, Punkerboy were both at her side. She had spent the last several years in a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. November 1st was the anniversary of her marriage to George. She was a young 57 years of age. Susan was born and raised in San Diego. She received her B.A. in Economics at U.C. Berkeley in 1965, and her Ph.D. at U.C. Davis in 1977. She began her teaching career with California State University, Sacramento in 1974, as a Professor of Economics. In January 1997, Susan was appointed Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences & Interdisciplinary Studies. Susan had a great love for her students and colleagues. The joy she received from watching her students flower into their potential was the absolute core of her being. Her love for helping people exceeded the walls of the university and into her personal relationships and friendships with those in her daily life. She also took great pride in the beautiful gardens around her home and loved putting the flowers in the ground and watching them grow. Susan was a true treasure to all who were fortunate enough to have shared in her life. She will most certainly be remembered with a smile by all who knew her. CSUS will be holding a memorial in Susan's honor on Monday, November 19th at 3:00p.m. The memorial will he held in the University Union, in the Student Board Chambers.
WONG, POI QUAN In Sacramento on October 30, 2001, aged 68 years. A resident of Sacramento for 46 years and a native of China. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gewthet "Billy" Wong of Sacramento and her sons, Duke Wong of Sacramento, Gene Wong of San Ramon, CA, Young Wong of San Francisco, CA and Herman Wong also of Sacramento. COLEMAN, CECIL EUGENE Age 77. Passed away October 30, 2001 in Sacramento. CORNELIUS, NANCY ANN In Carmichael, October 30, 2001, age 60, after a valiant fight against Renal Cell Cancer. Born in Costa Rica on October 1, 1941 and came to the U.S. with her parents in 1942, where she was raised in San Carlos, CA. Her many interests were designing and making award-winning quilts and art-to- wear clothing; watercolor painting; farmer's market with friends; good food and wine; running and then later walking along the river on the bike trail; and spending time with her adored granddaughters. She is survived by her beloved husband of 21 years, Richard; loving mother, Evelyn Whittemore of San Carlos; her loving daughter Ann (Garcia) Galli and her husband Michael of Mountain View; her loving son Roy Garcia of Granada Hills; her loving son Bill Garcia and his wife Cheryl and two granddaughters Sarah and Charlotte Garcia of Fair Oaks; her loving brother Donald Whittemore and wife Linda and niece Darcy and nephew Donnie of Woodland Hills; and many, many other relatives and friends. Predeceased by her father Donald G. Whittemore of San Francisco. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 5057 Cottage Way, Carmichael, on Sunday, November 11, 2001 at 2pm. FARNHAM, GEORGE J. Former State Information Officer and Bee Editor. Memorial Services for George Joseph Farnham, a former Information Officer for DMV and for the Department of Food and Agriculture and Copy Editor for The Sacramento Bee will be at 10:00am Saturday, at W.F. Gormley and Sons, 2015 Capitol Ave. George Farnham, an Oakland native, died Tuesday in a north area convalescent hospital. He was 82. Mr. Farnham spent his early years at St.Vincent's Home for Boys in San Raphael and went on to graduate from St. Mary's College after serving in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. He was a reporter and sports editor for the Chico Enterprise-Record, an editor for the Roseville Press-Tribune and a part time copy editor for The Sacramento Bee. He served as Assistant Information Officer for the Division of Highways and Information Officer for the Department of Fish and Game, Food and Agriculture and Motor Vehicles. He also produced documentary films for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico. He retired in 1990. He is survived by his six children, Alf Farnham of Seattle, Nancy Williams of Vallejo and Susan Laudi, Michael, Joel and John Farnham, all of Sacramento, eleven grandchildren and his friend, Doris Vettel. He preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Eula, who passed away in 1990. Viewing has been scheduled from 3pm to 8pm on Friday, also in the Gormley funeral home. KAWAHATA, HARRY Born April 8, 1908 in Ophir. Passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31st in Sutter Roseville Hospital. Survived by wife Harriet, sons Harry Jr. (Gerrie) and Richard, granddaughters Julie and Cindy Kawahata. Also survived by sister-in-laws Teruko Kawahata and Katherine Kawahata and by many nieces and nephews. He attended Placer High School. Later worked as a fruit rancher until the internment in Tulelake, CA and Topaz, UT. Returned to fruit ranching until 1955. At that time he began working at McLaughlin Ford and worked for 28 years before retiring in the 1983. In retirement, he enjoyed socializing with his many friends in the community. The funeral will be on Monday, Nov. 5th at 12:00 PM at the Placer Buddhist Church, 3192 Boyington Road, Penryn, CA. Burial will be immediately after at the Newcastle Cemetery. MARTIN, HERBERT JOHN Passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 29, 2001 with his loving family by his bedside. Born March 14, 1909, in Blue Hill, Nebraska. Attended Nebraska Weslyan and Hastings Colleges, excelling in drama, art and football. Moved to California in 1937. He met and married his devoted wife of 62 years, Harriet, who survives him. He is also survived by two adored daughters and their husbands, Carol Schanz (Gary) and Marilyn Buettell (Jim), grandchildren, Gregory Martin, Tracie Schanz, Terry Schanz, Trent Schanz and great grandson, Andrew Schanz. Herbert is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Fine of Fresno, CA and his brother, Edwin Martin and beloved nieces and nephews. He served 3 years in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. He was a member of the Sacramento Fire Department for 29 years, often cooking for the crew. He was a professional dog handler and bred and showed Cocker Spaniels. Herbert was an accredited camellia judge, past president of the Camellia Society of Sacramento, the Camellia Forum, and a member of the American Camellia Society and Sacramento City Retired Employee Association. Herbert was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor who adored his family and liked fishing, hunting, music and ballroom dancing. Visitation will be on November 4, from Noon to 4PM and memorial services will be held Monday, November 5, at 10AM at Harry Naumans. Interment to follow at the Masonic Cemetery
on Riverside Blvd.
McELDOWNEY, DALE "MAC" Born April 30, 1916 in Marion, OH. A long time resident of Sacramento, CA; passed away October 29, 2001. Beloved husband of Jeri for 45 years, devoted dad to Sandy, Bill, and Debbie, grandfather to Tom, Traci, and Cameron, great-grandfather to Eric, and survived by other close family and friends. METZLER, ALBERT Born September 1st, 1913 in Los Angeles, California. Died peacefully on March 14th in Carmichael, California of complications from diabetes and heart disease. Beloved father to Tom Metzler of Fair Oaks. Father-in-law to Kathy Metzler and grandfather to Matt and Chris. Preceded in death by Marian Klosterman Metzler, his wife of 48 years, in 1989. Brother to Emma, John, Armida, Kennard, Bertha, Louis and Robert. Worked as a Production Supervisor for Brown International in West Covina, California until his retirement. Forty two year resident of Whittier, California, he moved to Carmichael in 1996 to be closer to his family. Member of Toastmaster's International from 1991-1999. World War II veteran - landed on Day 1 of Normandy invasion as member of 111th Sea Bee Battalion. His ashes were interred next to his Marian at Holy Cross Cemetery
in Culver City, California. He was a wonderful, kind man whose quiet strength, humor and humility will be greatly missed.
MOODY, PATRICIA LEE Passed away on October 29, 2001 in Woodland, CA. at the age of 70. A native of California, Patricia currently resided in Woodland for 9 years and was a previous resident of Reno, NV for 14 years. Patricia is preceded in death by her husband Melvin Moody and her parents, Donald & LaVerne Hill. She is survived by her sons Mitch Moody of Reno, NV & Scott Moody of Jacksonville, FL.; and 3 grandchildren. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1950 She was a volunteer for the Yolo County Fair; Yolo Friends of Art; and at the Yolo Library. No services will be held per her request.
