Mary McBride Saumure

Mary Saumure remembered for poise, resolve

Mary McBride Saumure battled breast cancer for four years and, family members say, she never complained.

Instead, she lived her life fully -- and gracefully.

She died Friday at her Carmichael home, with her husband of seven years, Patrick D. Saumure, at her side.

She was 33.

"She was a person of uncommon poise and calm," said her aunt, Marie Carter.

A fifth-generation Sacramentan, Ms. Saumure was an International Sales Service manager for Diamond of California Inc., where she worked with brokers abroad and coordinated the transportation and distribution of walnuts to western Europe.

She was tirelessly devoted to her job, even while enduring the ill effects of intermittent chemotherapy after she was diagnosed with cancer. In 1996, Diamond recognized her as Management Employee of the Year.

Her family says people admired her resolve and intelligence.

In 1990, she graduated from UC Davis with a degree in international relations. She was fluent in French and refined her language skills as an AFS student in France. She also studied German and Italian.

"She was remarkable and thoughtful. She tried to do everything she could," Carter said.

She tried sports, too. And succeeded: Ms. Saumure was a member of the UC Davis women's crew team and competed in the Western Pacific Rowing Championships. She also belonged to the Ophir-Milan Woman's Cycling Club, her personal hero being cancer survivor Lance Armstrong, the three-time winner of the Tour de France.

In 1996 she bicycled through Italy.

Ms. Saumure enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. And she enjoyed her garden, now a living tribute to her love of plants and flowers.

She was a precocious youngster, relatives said.

Reared by Realtor Margo McBride, she handled many of the household affairs and helped with her mother's real estate errands when she was in junior high school.

She was an honors graduate of El Camino High School and served as president of the Key (Kiwanis) Club for two years.

While battling cancer, relatives said, Ms. Saumure was concerned about how her illness would affect others.

"She was remarkable. She was just one of those rare people," Carter said.

Beside her husband and mother, Ms. Saumure is survived by her father, John McBride; brother, William Rupp; and other relatives.

Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at East Lawn Sierra Hills Chapel, at Interstate 80 and Greenback Lane.

Contributions may be directed to the Sacramento chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Sutter Cancer Center, 2801 L St., Sacramento 95816.
